Why is the beautyberry so colourful? Evolution,biogeography,and diversification of fruit colours in Callicarpa(Lamiaceae)

Fruit colour is essential to seed dispersal,speciation,and biological diversity in global *** relationship between fruit-colour variation and species diversification has long been of interest in evolutionary biology,but remains poorly understood at the genus ***,we used Callicarpa,a typical representative of pantropical angiosperm,to analyse whether fruit colours are correlated with biogeographic distribution,dispersal events,and diversification *** estimated a time-calibrated phylogeny for Callicarpa and reconstructed ancestral fruit *** phylogenetic methods,we estimated the major dispersal events across the phylogenetic tree and the most likely fruit colours related to each dispersal event,and tested whether the dispersal frequencies and distances of the four fruit colours between major biogeographical areas were *** then tested whether fruit colours are correlated with latitude,elevation,and diversification *** reconstructions showed that Callicarpa originated in the East Asia and Southeast Asia during the Eocene(-35.53 Ma) and diverse species diverged mainly in the Miocene and lasted into the ***-scale dispersal events were significantly associated with violet-fruited ***,different fruit colours were markedly correlated with different latitudes and elevations(e.g.,violet fruits were correlated with higher latitudes and elevations;red fruits and black fruits with lower latitudes;white fruits with higher elevations).Notably,violet fruits were statistically associated with highest diversification rates,driving fruit colour variation among different regions *** results contribute to further understanding why fruit colour is so variable at the genus level of angiosperms in different areas around the world.

Three-dimensional characteristics of mesoscale eddies simulated by a regional model in the northwestern Pacific Ocean during 2000–2008

Mesoscale eddies play vital roles in ocean *** previous studies focused on eddy surface features and individual three-dimensional(3D)eddy cases in the northwestern Pacific Ocean,the analysis of unique eddy3D regional characteristics is still lacking.A 3D eddy detection scheme is applied to 9 years(2000-2008)of eddyresolving Regional Ocean Modeling System(ROMS)output to obtain a 3D eddy dataset from the surface to a depth of 1000 m in the northwestern Pacific Ocean(15°-35°N,120°-145°E).The 3D characteristics of mesoscale eddies are analyzed in two regions,namely,Box1(subtropical Countercurrent,15°-25°N,120°-145°E)and Box2(Southern Kuroshio Extension,25°-35°N,120°-145°E).In Box1,the current is characterized by strong vertical shear and weak horizontal *** Box2,the current is characterized by the strong Kuroshio,topographic effect,and the westward propagation of Rossby *** results indicate the importance of baroclinic instability in Box1,whereas in Box2,both the barotropic and baroclinic instability are ***,the mesoscale eddies’properties in Box1 and Box2 are *** eddies in Box1 have larger number and radius but a shorter *** contrast,Box2 has fewer eddies,which have smaller radius but longer ***,more eddies are detected at the subsurface than at the surface in both regions;the depth of 650 m is the turning point in *** this depth,the number of cyclonic eddies(CEs)is larger than that of anticyclonic eddies(AEs).In Box2,the number of CEs is dominant *** kinetic energy(EKE)and mean normalized relative vorticity in Box2are significantly higher than those in *** increasing depth,the attenuation trend of EKE and relative vorticity of Box1 become greater than those of ***,the upper ocean(about 300 m in depth)contains 68.6%of the eddies(instantaneous eddy).Only 16.6%of the eddies extend to 1000 *** addition,about87%of the eddies are bowl-shaped eddies in the two reg

Convergent relationships between flower economics and hydraulic traits across aquatic and terrestrial herbaceous plants

Maintaining open flowers is critical for successful pollination and depends on long-term water and carbon *** the relationship between how flower hydraulic traits are coordinated in different habitats is poorly ***,we hypothesize that the coordination and trade-offs between floral hydraulics and economics traits are independent of environmental *** test this hypothesis,we investigated a total of 27 flower economics and hydraulic traits in six aquatic and six terrestrial herbaceous species grown in a tropical botanical *** found that although there were a few significant differences,most flower hydraulics and economics traits did not differ significantly between aquatic and terrestrial herbaceous *** flower mass per area and floral longevity were significantly positively correlated with the time required for drying full-hydrated flowers to 70%relative water *** dry matter content was strongly and positively related to drought tolerance of the flowers as indicated by flower water potential at the turgor loss *** addition,there was a trade-off between hydraulic efficiency and the construction cost of a flower across *** results show that flowers of aquatic and terrestrial plants follow the same economics spectrum *** results suggest a convergent flower economics design across terrestrial and aquatic plants,providing new insights into the mechanisms by which floral organs adapt to aquatic and terrestrial habitats.

DYNAMICAL PREDICTION OF WEST CHINA AUTUMN RAINFALL BY THE NCEP CLIMATE FORECAST SYSTEM

This study investigates the variation and prediction of the west China autumn rainfall(WCAR) and their associated atmospheric circulation features, focusing on the transitional stages of onset and demise of the *** from the 45-day hindcast by the National Centers for Environmental Prediction(NCEP) Climate Forecast System version 2(CFSv2) and several observational data sets are used. The onset of WCAR generally occurs at pentad 46 and decays at pentad 56, with heavy rainfall over the northwestern China and moderate rainfall over the south. Before that,southerly wind changes into southeasterly wind, accompanied by a westward expansion and intensification of the western Pacific subtropical high(WPSH), favoring rainfall over west China. On the other hand, during the decay of WCAR, a continental cold high develops and the WPSH weakens and shifts eastward, accompanied by a demise of southwest monsoon flow, leading to decay of rainfall over west China. The CFSv2 generally well captures the variation of WCAR owing to the high skill in capturing the associated atmospheric circulation, despite an overestimation of rainfall. This overestimation occurs at all time leads due to the overestimated low-level southerly wind. The CFSv2 can pinpoint the dates of onset and demise of WCAR at the leads up to 5 days and 40 days, respectively. The lower prediction skill for WCAR onset is due to the unrealistically predicted northerly wind anomaly over the lower branch of the Yangtze River and the underestimated movement of WPSH after lead time of 5 days.

Polyamines and antioxidant defense system are associated with cold tolerance in centipedegrass

Physiological responses to low temperature were analyzed in a chilling-tolerant centipedegrass(Eremochloa ophiuroides) accession, Shao Guan(SG), in comparison to the commercial cultivar, Common. Lower levels of ion leakage and higher chlorophyll(Chl)concentration were observed in SG than in Common during chilling stress. The maximum photochemical efficiency, the actual photosystem Ⅱ(PSII) efficiency,photochemical quenching efficiency, and net photosynthetic rate were decreased during chilling stress in both genotypes, with higher levels of these parameters shown by SG than Common. In addition, higher activities of superoxide dismutase(SOD), catalase(CAT), ascorbateperoxidase(APX) and glutathione reductase(GR), and higher concentrations of ascorbic acid(AsA) and glutathione(GSH) were observed in SG than in ***, higher concentrations of putrescine(Put),spermidine(Spd), and spermine(Spm) were observed in SG than in Common. Correlation analysis indicated that SOD, CAT, APX and GR activities, and As A and GSH concentrations showed high correlation to Put, while APX,GR, and As A concentrations were correlated to *** Put or Spd increased antioxidant enzyme activities and chilling tolerance. The results suggested that polyamine-regulated antioxidants are important for chilling tolerance in centipedegrass and protect plants against chilling induced oxidative damage.

Environment drives the co-occurrence of bacteria and microeukaryotes in a typical subtropical bay

The co-occurrence of bacteria and microeukaryote species is a ubiquitous ecological phenomenon,but there is limited cross-domain research in aquatic *** conducted a network statistical analysis and visualization of microbial cross-domain co-occurrence patterns based on DNA sampling of a typical subtropical bay during four seasons,using high-throughput sequencing of both 18S rRNA and 16S rRNA ***,we found obvious relationships between network stability and network complexity *** example,increased cooperation and modularity were found to weaken the stability of cross-domain ***,we found that bacterial operational taxonomic units(OTUs)were the most important contributors to network complexity and stability as they occupied more nodes,constituted more keystone OTUs,built more connections,more importantly,ignoring bacteria led to greater variation in network ***,Alphaproteobacteria,Bacteroidetes,and Actinobacteria were the most ecologically important ***,we found that the environmental drivers most associated with cross-domain networks varied across seasons(in detail,the network in January was primarily constrained by temperature and salinity,the network in April was primarily constrained by depth and temperature,the network in July was mainly affected by depth,temperature,and salinity,depth was the most important factor affecting the network in October)and that environmental influence was stronger on bacteria than on microeukaryotes.

Litchi chinensis Sonn is widely cultivated in subtropical regions and has an important economic value.A high-density genetic map is a valuable tool for mapping quantitative trait loci(QTL)and marker-assisted breeding *** this study,a single nucleotide polymorphism(SNP)-based high-density linkage map was constructed by a genotyping-by-sequencing(GBS)protocol using an F1 population of 178 progenies between two commercial litchi cultivars,‘Ziniangxi’(dwarf)and‘Feizixiao’(vigorous).The genetic map consisted of 3027 SNP markers with a total length of 1711.97 cM in 15 linkage groups(LGs)and an average marker distance of 0.57 *** on this high-density linkage map and three years of phenotyping,a total of 37 QTLs were detected for eight dwarf-related traits,including length of new branch(LNB),diameter of new branch(DNB),length of common petiole(LCP),diameter of common petiole(DCP),length of internode(LI),length of single leaf(LSL),width of single leaf(WSL),and plant height(PH).These QTLs could explain 8.0 to 14.7%(mean=9.7%)of the phenotypic *** them,several QTL clusters were observed,particularly on LG04 and LG11,which might show enrichment for genes regulating the dwarf-related traits in *** were 126 candidate genes identified within the QTL regions,55 of which are differentially expressed genes by RNA-seq analysis between‘Ziniangxi’and‘Feizixiao’.These DEGs were found to participate in the regulation of cell development,material transportation,signal transduction,and plant morphogenesis,so they might play important roles in regulating plant dwarf-related *** high-density genetic map and QTLs identification related to dwarf traits can provide a valuable genetic resource and a basis for marker-assisted selection and genomic studies of litchi.
