As one of the main areas of tropical storm action in the northwestern Pacific Ocean,South China experiences several typhoons each year,and coastal erosion is a problem,making the area a natural testing ground for studying the dynamic geomorphological processes and storm response of promontory-straight *** study is based on three years of topographic data and remote sensing imagery of Gulei Beach and uses topographic profile morphology,single width erosion-accretion and mean change,combined with the Coastsat model to quantify the seasonal and interannual variability and storm response of the beach and to explain the evolution of shoreline change and beach dynamics geomorphology in the last *** Beach has been in a state of overall erosion and local accretion for a long time,with relatively obvious cyclical changes;seasonal changes are also obvious,which are mainly characterized by summer accretion and winter erosion,with accretion at the top of the bay and accretion and erosion on the north and south sides of the bay corner,respectively;the seasonal erosion-accretion volume of the beach profile ranges from-80 m3/m to 95.52 m3/m,and the interannual erosion-accretion volume ranges from-69.09 m3/m to 87.31 m3/*** response of beaches to typhoons with different paths varies greatly depending on the length,slope,orientation and scale of beach *** large and gently developing Futou beach is less responsive to storms,while the less developed headlands in the southern Gulei Peninsula are more susceptible to disturbance by external factors and respond more strongly to *** distance is more influential than storm *** the influence of human activities,obvious erosion hotspots develop during normal weather,but storm processes produce redistribution of beach material patterns,and erosion hotspots disappear after *** results of this study enrich the theory of beach dynamics geomorphology and provide technical support for dis

Typhoon vs. cold wave: a comparative assessment of geomorphic response and boulder displacement using RFID technology

Extreme storm events in coastal zones play significant roles in shaping the morphology of boulder ***,boulder displacement and the geomorphological evolution of boulder beaches driven by different extreme storm events,especially typhoon events,remain poorly ***,boulder displacement and the geomorphic response on a boulder beach in Fujian,southeastern China,were explored before,during and after a cold wave event(Dec.1–7,2020)and before and after Typhoon In-Fa(Jul.19–27,2021),a large tropical *** was achieved by tracking 42 tagged boulders distributed in the intertidal and supratidal zones using Radio Frequency Identification(RFID)and topographic surveys using real-time kinematic techniques,*** results showed obvious disparities in boulder displacement in different geomorphic zones due to cold wave and typhoon events that were mainly characterized by migration magnitude,range,direction,and mode of *** typhoon event led to rapid and substantial changes in the overall morphology of the boulder beach,while the cold wave event impacted the intertidal morphology of the boulder beach to only a small *** surrounding structure of boulders,beach slope and beach elevation had a combined dominant effect on boulder displacement under the same extreme *** factors(effective wave energy fluxes,incident wave direction,storm surge and water level)had dominant effects on boulder displacement during different extreme *** terms of a single event,the magnitude of the boulder displacement driven by the typhoon was much greater than that driven by the cold ***,considering the frequency and duration of cold waves in winter,the impact of multiple consecutive cold waves on the geomorphology of the boulder beach cannot be ignored in this study *** and repeated interactions between these two processes constitute the complete geomorphic evolution of the boulder *** study contributes to i

Assessing Landsat-8 atmospheric correction schemes in low to moderate turbidity waters from a global perspective

Atmospheric correction is one of the major challenges in ocean color remote sensing,thus threatening comprehensive evaluation of water quality within aquatic *** this study,five state-of-the-art atmospheric correction(AC)processors(***,C2RCC,iCOR,L2gen,and Polymer)were applied to Operational Land Imager(OLI)Landsat-8 scenes and evaluated against in situ measurements across various types of waters worldwide.A total of 262 matchups between in situ measured and satellite-derived remote sensing reflectance(R_(rs))at 20 sites were obtained between August 2013 and August *** of optical water types(OWTs)was carried out using in situ measurements with matched satellite ***-specific analysis demonstrated that L2gen produced the most accurate Rrs with R^(2)≥0.74 and root mean squared error(RMSE)≤0.0018 sr^(–1) for the four visible bands of OLI,followed by Polymer,C2RCC,iCOR,and *** terms of R_(rs) spectral similarity,C2RCC yielded the lowest spectral angle(SA)of 8.55°,followed by L2gen(SA=9.20°).The advantage and disadvantage of each AC scheme were *** to improve the accuracy for atmospheric correction were made,such as polarization observations and concurrent aerosol and ocean color measurements.

Characteristics of typhoon disturbed gaps in an old-growth tropical montane rainforest in Hainan Island, China

Disturbances that create gaps can shape the structure and function of forests. However, such disturbance regimes in Asian tropical montane rainforests remain largely unquantified. Least studied are typhoon disturbances that are attributable to climate change. We investigated gap characteristics in terms of size, age, and gap-maker to quantify the gap disturbance regimes in an intact old-growth tropical montane rainforest on Hainan Island, China. The intensity of typhoons has increased since 1949, and typhoon winds blow mostly (45.5%) from the northeast corner of Hainan Island, resulting in a higher frequency of gaps in the northeast. A total of 221 gap-makers (trees that fell to create canopy gaps) and 53 gaps were observed in a 3.16 ha old-growth rainforest. Most canopy gaps (85%) were tropical forests, while the average size of expanded gaps was similar to those in other tropical forests. The maximum age of gaps was 23.5 years indicating that gaps had more rapid turnover than other parts of tropical forests. The frequency distribution of gap-makers followed a lognormal distribution with a distinctive peak at three gap-makers, which was different from the inverse J-shaped curve typical of other tropical forests. Gaps were recorded mainly on slopes between 20A degrees and 35A degrees and wood density of gap-makers was between 0.6 and 0.7 g cm(-3). Our results suggest that small-scale disturbance was the dominant agent of gap formation in this old-growth rainforest that is subject to increasing typhoon disturbances.

Mechanisms for marine–Terrestrial Compound Heatwaves in Southern China and Adjacent Oceans

Extreme heat events over both lands and oceans have increased in frequency and intensity, and exerted profound impacts on human and natural systems. More impactful is their concurrence, leading to larger losses in health, food,economy, and ecosystem, but receiving far less attention. Understanding the mechanism for such marine–terrestrial compound heatwaves is a prerequisite to prediction and disaster prevention. Based on air particle trajectory analysis,we identified 87 compound heatwaves in China and adjacent oceans in summers of 1982–2021,with the connection between marine and terrestrial heatwaves particularly prominent between the oceans to Northeast Philippines and the lands in South/Southeast China. Through composite and case analysis, it is found that the connection is established by simultaneous governance of(i) the western Pacific subtropical high(WPSH),(ii) a dipole circulation pattern constituted by the WPSH and weak tropical cyclones(TCs), or(iii) strong and closer-to-coast TCs, each of which causes anomalously strong descending motion, increased incoming solar radiation, and strengthened adiabatic heating on lands. The marine heatwaves act to supply more moisture through enhanced evaporation, and/or intensify TCs that pass the region. The air particle tracking shows that these moister air masses are then advected by the WPSH and/or TCs to South/Southeast China, converting the adiabatic heating-caused dry heatwaves there into humid ones and thus adding to the heat stress. These diagnoses provide new insight into the mechanistic understanding and forecast precursors for terrestrial heatwaves, through the lens of compound events.

Phycobilisomes and chlorophyll-a(Chla)play important roles in the photosynthetic physiology of red macroalgae and serve as the primary light-harvesting antennae and reaction center for photosystem Ⅱ.Neopyropia is an economically important red macroalga widely cultivated in East Asian *** contents and ratios of 3 main phycobiliproteins and Chla are visible traits to evaluate its commercial *** traditional analytical methods used for measuring these components have several ***,a high-throughput,nondestructive,optical method based on hyperspectral imaging technology was developed for phenotyping the pigments phycoerythrin(PE),phycocyanin(PC),allophycocyanin(APC),and Chla in Neopyropia thalli in this *** average spectra from the region of interest were collected at wavelengths ranging from 400 to 1000 nm using a hyperspectral *** different preprocessing methods,2 machine learning methods,partial least squares regression(PLSR)and support vector machine regression(SVR),were performed to establish the best prediction models for PE,PC,APC,and Chla *** prediction results showed that the PLSR model performed the best for PE(R_(Test^(2))=0.96,MAPE=8.31%,RPD=5.21)and the SVR model performed the best for PC(R_(Test^(2))=0.94,MAPE=7.18%,RPD=4.16)and APC(R_(Test^(2))=0.84,MAPE=18.25%,RPD=2.53).Two models(PLSR and SVR)performed almost the same for Chla(PLSR:R_(Test^(2))=0.92,MAPE=12.77%,RPD=3.61;SVR:R_(Test^(2))=0.93,MAPE=13.51%,RPD=3.60).Further validation of the optimal models was performed using field-collected samples,and the result demonstrated satisfactory robustness and *** distribution of PE,PC,APC,and Chla contents within a thallus was visualized according to the optimal prediction *** results showed that hyperspectral imaging technology was effective for fast,accurate,and noninvasive phenotyping of the PE,PC,APC,and Chla contents of Neopyropia in *** could benefit the efficiency of macro

Pyropia yezoensis is an important macroalga because of its extensive global distribution and economic *** is an important trait in the thalli of ***,it is also an effective marker to identify the hybridization in genetic *** this study,a high-density genetic linkage map was constructed based on high-throughput single nucleotide polymorphism(SNP)markers,and used for analyzing the quantitative trait loci(QTLs)of red color trait in the thalli of *** conchospore undergoes meiosis to develop into an ordered tetrad,and each cell has a haploid phenotype and can grow into a single *** on this theory,F1 haploid population was used as the mapping *** map included 531 SNP markers,394.57 cM long on average distance of 0.74 *** analysis of the genetic linkage map and the physical map indicated that the coverage between the two maps was 79.42%.Furthermore,QTL mapping identified six QTLs for the chromosomal regions associated with the red color trait of the *** value of phenotypic variance explained(PVE)by an individual QTL ranged from 4.71%-63.11%.And QTL qRed-1-1,with a PVE of 63.11%,was considered the major ***,these data may provide a platform for gene and QTL fine mapping,and marker-assisted breeding in *** in the future.

Taxonomy, Morphology and Phylogeny of a New Oligotrich Ciliate-Omegastrombidium hongkongense n. sp.(Protozoa: Ciliophora) from Clear Water Bay, Hong Kong

One new marine oligotrich ciliate, Omegastrombidium hongkongense n. sp., was isolated from a bloom of Noctiluca scuntillans near Port Shelter, Hong Kong. The morphology and infraciliature of this new species were studied on both living and protargol-stained specimens. Its phylogenetic position was discussed based on the sequence of the small subunit r RNA gene. O. hongkongense is different from its congeners with special characters. The cells are usually heart-shaped, and the cell size usually is(20–35) ×(20–30) μm in vivo. Its deep buccal cavity extends obliquely to about 1/2 of cell length. It shows prominent apical protrusion. The adoral zone of membranelles is divided into 17–19 collar membranelles and four buccal membranelles. It has one ball-like macronucleus. The girdle kinety forms a closed loop which obliquely surrounds the body. The ventral kinety and thigmotactic membranelles are not observed. The SSU r RNA sequence of O. hongkongense was close to those of Strombidium paracalkinsi and Varistrombidium kelum with approximately 99% similarity. In the phylogenetic trees, O. hongkongense can be grouped with O. elegans and V. kielum species with very low support(16% ML).

Phylogenetic diversity and bioactivity of culturable deepsea-derived fungi from Okinawa Trough

Deep-sea sediments are now recognized as a home for rich and largely microbial ***,it has been believed in an increasing number of studies that bacteria could be abundant in deepsea sediments of many types;however,fungi in deep-sea sediments remain relatively *** phylogenetic diversity and bioactivity of culturable deep-sea-derived fungi from Okinawa Trough sediments were investigated in traditional method combined with fungal identification of molecular biology in this study.A total of 76 isolates belonged to 15 fungal taxa were recovered in a harsh condition of low nutrient and low temperature,indicating that the fungal communities in deep-sea sediments from Okinawa Trough were relatively abundant and ***,Cladosporium,and Penicillium were the dominant fungal genera,while Mycosphaerella,Purpureocillium,and Schizophyllum were relatively rare in the deep-sea sediments from Okinawa *** the six genera recovered,Mycosphaerella was firstly recovered from deep-sea sediments in this ***,about 75%of the extracts from the 15 fungal representative isolates displayed distinct bioactivity against at least one indicator bacterium or marine macrofouler,emphasizing the potentials of these deep-sea-derived fungi from Okinawa Trough as producers of bioactive ***,isolates Cladosporium oxysporum SCSIO z001 and Penicillium citrinum SCSIO z049 displayed a wide spectrum of bioactivities,isolates Cladosporium cladosporioides SCSIO z015,Cladosporium sphaerospermum SCSIO z030,and Penicillium verruculosum SCSIO z007 exhibited a strong anti-bacterial-growth activity,and isolate Penicillium chrysogenum SCSIO z062 displayed a strong anti-larval-settlement *** results suggest that these isolates deserved further study as potential sources of novel bioactive metabolites.
