Petrogenetic model of the Permian Tarim Large Igneous Province

Over the last two decades great strides have been made in characterizing the spatial distribution, time sequence,geochemical characteristics, mantle sources, and magma evolution processes for various igneous rocks in the Early Permian Tarim Large Igneous Province(TLIP). This work has laid a solid foundation for revealing the evolutionary processes and genetic models of large igneous provinces(LIPs). This study systematically demonstrates the two-stage melting model for the TLIP based on our previous research work and predecessor achievements, and highlights the two types of magmatic rocks within the *** two-stage melting model suggests that the formation of the TLIP is mantle plume related. The early hot mantle plume caused the low-degree partial melting of the lithosphere mantle, while in the later stage, the plume partially melted due to adiabatic uplift and decompression. Therefore, this model carries signatures of both the "Parana" and "Deccan" models in terms of mantle plume activity. During the early stage, the mantle plume provided the heat required for partial melting of sub-continental lithosphere mantle(SCLM), similar to the "Parana Model", while later the plume acted as the main avenue for melting, as in the "Deccan Model". Basalts that erupted in the first stage have higher 87Sr/86 Sr, lower 143Nd/144 Nd ratios, and are enriched in large ion lithophile elements and high field strength elements, indicating a possible origin from the enriched continental lithosphere mantle,similar to the Parana type geochemical features. The basic-ultrabasic intrusive rocks in the second stage exhibit lower 87Sr/86 Sr,higher 143Nd/144 Nd ratios relative to the basalts, consistent with the involvement of a more depleted asthenospheric material,such as a mantle plume, similar to the Deccan type geochemical features. The first stage basalts can be further subdivided into two categories, i.e., Group 1 and Group 2 basalts. Group 2 basalts have lower 87Sr/86 Sr and higher 1

Variation of singularity of earthquake-size distribution with respect to tectonic regime

Frequency-size relation of earthquakes in a region can be approximated by the Gutenberg-Richter law(GR). This power-law model involves two parameters: a-value measuring seismic activity or earthquake productivity, and b-value describing the relation between frequencies of small and large *** spatial and temporal variations of these two parameters, especially the b-value, have been substantially investigated. For example, it has been shown that b-value depends inversely on differential stress. The b-value has also been utilized as earthquake precursor in large earthquake ***, the physical meaning and properties of b-value including its value range still remain as an open fundamental question. We explore the property of b-value from frequency-size GR model in a new form which relates average energy release and probability of large earthquakes. Based on this new form of GR relation the b-value can be related to the singularity index(1-2/3 b) of fractal energy-probability power-law model. This model as applied to the global database of earthquakes with size M ≥ 5 from 1964 to 2015 indicates a systematic increase of singularity from earthquakes occurring on mid-ocean ridges, to those in subduction zones and in collision zones.

Revealing and predicting the long-term biomechanical response of orthokeratology by developing a patient-specific computational model

Orthokeratology(OK) is widely used for effective myopia correction and control. However, the incomplete understanding of its biomechanical mechanisms makes OK lens fitting rely heavily on clinician judgment, complicating accurate predictions of treatment outcomes. In this paper, we performed clinical experiments and numerical analysis to study corneal deformation modes and long-term changes in central corneal thickness. Clinical experiments were conducted on 194 Chinese myopic patients under OK treatment for 3 months. Based on the experimental data, a patient-specific computational biomechanical model for OK was established and validated. Specifically, the anisotropic mechanical properties of the cornea were incorporated into the model to describe the significant difference between its shear modulus(29.5 kPa) and tensile modulus(768.4 kPa). Additionally, a viscohyperelastic material model with a prolonged corneal relaxation time of 5.6 h was developed to capture the long-term deformation response. The results show that corneal thickness reduction in OK is primarily due to out-of-plane shear deformation,influenced by the cornea's low shear resistance. Modeling the extended corneal relaxation time is crucial for predicting long-term biomechanical responses. The computational model effectively captures long-term changes in central corneal thickness, potentially improving OK lens fitting accuracy.

Response of the distributary channel of the Huanghe River estuary to water and sediment discharge regulation in 2007

The water and sediment discharge regulation （WSDR） project, which has been performed since 2002 before flood season every year, is of great significance to the river management in China. Until 2007, six experiments have been fulfilled to evaluate the effect of the project on the natural environment. To fill the gap of investigations, a study on flood and suspended sediment transportation and channel changing along the distributary channel of the Huanghe （Yellow） River was conducted during the WSDR project period in 2007. The lower channel was scoured rapidly and the channel became unobstructed gradually several days after the flood peak water was discharged from the Xiaolangdi Reservoir. Within four days after the flood peak at 3 000 m3/s entered the distributary, the channel in the river mouth area was eroded quickly. Both the mean values of area and depth of the main channel were tripled, and the maximum flood carrying capacity increased to 5 500 m3/s or more. Then, the river channel was silted anew in a very short time after completion of the WSDR. Favored by the WSDR project, the fiver status in April 2008 became better than that of the year before. The adjustment ranges of main channel parameters were about 30%, 10%, and 10% at sections C2, Q4, and Q7, respectively. The process of rapid erosion-deposition was more active 15 km away in the channel from the fiver mouth due to the marine influence. It is reasonable for discharging sediment at concentration peak from Xiaolangdi Reservoir at the end of the flood peak. As a result, the sediment peak reached the river mouth about two days later than that of the water current. In addition, the WSDR project has improved the development of the estuarine wetland. Wetland vegetation planted along the river banks restrained the water flow as a strainer and improved the main channel stability. Sustained growth of the largest uninhabited alluvial island in the Changjiang Estuary under the drastic reduction of river discharged sediment

The evolution of the Changjiang Delta is obviously affected by current rapidly rising sea level and drastically declining river discharge,and it is also vital for the sustainable development of Shanghai and the Changjiang River Economic Belt,which represent China’s economic development leader and major national strategic area,*** this paper,the growth pattern of Jiuduansha Island,the largest uninhabited alluvial island in the Changjiang Estuary,is studied in terms of the change in elevation,position and area over the past 50 years through using satellite-derived instantaneous shoreline positions and high/low tide exposure areas based on 497 satellite images from 1974 to 2020;and the influencing factors and future development patterns are further discussed by comparison with other alluvial islands or sandbars in the *** results show that Jiuduansha Island has maintained a rapid or even accelerated area growth rate,although the sediment discharge of the Changjiang River has sharply decreased in recent *** sustained growth is mainly attributed to the existence of the estuarine turbidity maximum zone,coarsening fluvial sediment,onshore sediment replenishment by tide,cone-like geomorphology of Jiuduansha Island,and siltation promotion effect of *** growth rate of the low tide exposure area of Jiuduansha Island increased from 1.9 km^(2)a^(−1) in 1974–1990 to 3.0 km^(2)a^(−1) in 1990–2020,and the growth rate of the high tide exposure area reached as high as 3.7 km^(2)a^(−1) in 1994–*** implementation of the Deep-Water Channel Project has significantly affected the evolution of Jiuduansha Island,including shifting the heads of Shangsha and Zhongxiasha from severe retreat to rapid accretion,and promoting tidal flat progradation seaward of the Jiangyanansha and Zhongxiasha,but restricting the growth of the low tide exposure area of Jiuduansha Island.

Growth structures and growth strata of the Qianjiadian Basin in the western Yanshan fold and thrust belt, North China

The northwestward subduction of the Izanagi Plate beneath the eastern Eurasian Plate during the Late Mesozoic caused a series of compressional deformation events in the Yanshan fold and thrust belt(YFTB), but the tectonic deformation timing, tectonic properties and relationship between tectonic uplift and sediment accumulation in the intermontane basins continue to be debated. For this reason, the sedimentology, sediment provenance, and basin structure of the Qianjiadian Basin(QJB) in the northern Beijing region during the Late Jurassic and Early Cretaceous were studied in detail. The results suggest that a fault-propagation fold-type(FPFT) growth structure and growth strata developed on the western edge of the QJB and that the top part of Member 2 and Member 3 of the Tuchengzi Formation are growth strata controlled by the limb rotation mechanism. In two small thrust faults in the QJB, the Mesoproterozoic Xiamaling Formation is thrust over the Tuchengzi Formation, and these faults may have controlled the development of the fault-bend fold-type growth strata. An analysis of the "source-to-sink" process suggests that the hanging wall succession of the Shangyi-Pingquan fault(SPF) was the main source area of the Late Jurassic to early Early Cretaceous strata in the QJB. A zircon206 Pb/238 U age of 140.8±2.4 Ma for the volcanic rocks at the bottom of the FPFT growth strata represents the timing of the initiation of FPFT growth structure development. The discovery of the FPFT growth structure and growth strata in the QJB indicate that the QJB was an intermontane flexural basin controlled by fold and thrust structures during the early Early Cretaceous. Near the E-W-trending SPF, the NE-SW-trending Qianjiadian thrust fault(QJTF) and two small intrabasinal thrust faults may constitute a unified right-lateral strike-slip system that formed in response to the northwestward flat subduction of the Izanagi Plate beneath the East Asian continent during the Jurassic-Early Cretaceou

Climatic and Tectonic Evolution in the North Qaidam since the Cenozoic: Evidence from Sedimentology and Mineralogy

Clay mineralogy and bulk mineral composition of Tertiary sediments in Qaidam were investigated using X-ray diffraction （XRD） and scanning electron microscopy in order to better understand regional climate change resulting from uplift of the Northeast Tibetan Plateau. Climate change in Qaidam since -53.5 Ma could be divided into four stages： a warm and seasonally arid climate between -53.5 and 40 Ma, a cold and arid climate from -40 to 26 Ma, a warm and humid climate between -26 and 13.5 Ma, and a much colder and arid climate from -13.5 to 2.5 Ma, respectively. The illite crystallinity and sedimentary facies suggested that uplift events took place around ＆gt;52–50, -40–38, -26–15, -10–8, and ＆lt;5 Ma inthe Qaidam region, respectively. The climate in Qaidam Basin could have been controlled by global climate prior to 13.5 Ma. As the Tibetan Plateau reached a significant elevation by -13.5 Ma, and the climate cycles of the East Asian monsoon might add additional influence.

Carbon and oxygen isotopes suggesting deep-water basin deposition associated with hydrothermal events(Shangsi Section, Northwest Sichuan Basin-South China)

Carbon and oxygen isotope records for Shangsi Section in Northwest Sichuan Basin, South China can help investigating depositional environments and processes, including the burial rate and possible contribution of hydrothermal events. Samples from the lower Chihsian Formation show δ13CPDB and δ18OPDB values close to those of typical marine limestone. However, the overlying Permian middle-upper Chihsian, Wujiaping, and Maokou Formation samples reveal negative δ18OSMOW values and strong positive δ13CPDB values. These indicate high biological productivity and rapid burial of organic carbon. Samples from the Dalong Formation present both negative δ13CPDB and negative δ18OPDB values, which are quite different from the underlying Permian strata. These abnormal carbon and oxygen isotope characteristics in the Dalong Formation may suggest that hydrothermal processes contributed to deposition.
