Temporal and spatial variations in hydrogeochemistry of cave percolation water and their implications for four caves in Guizhou, China

Soil water and cave drip water from four cave systems in Guizhou, Southwest China, were monitored and sampled monthly from April 2003 to May 2004 to understand spatio-temporal variations in hydro-geochemistry of cave percolation water. The results indicated that among the 5 drip water sites from the Liangfeng Cave (LFC), there were no significant differences among the hydro-geochemical parameters. In the Xiniu Cave (XNC), the drip rates were variable and responded quickly to precipitation events in the 3# (No. 3) drip site with variable water head; both bulk and variation in drip rates were smaller in the 2# with constant water head. However, in the Qixing Cave (QXC) and Jiangjun Cave (JJC), drip rates, concentrations of major ions and saturation index for calcite (SI C ) were smaller, and Mg/Ca ratios in group I (1#, 2#, 6#, 7# and 8# in the QXC; 2# and 3# in the JJC) were larger than those in group II (3#, 4#, 5# and 9# in the QXC; 1# and 4# in the JJC). These differences might be the result of different hydrogeological processes above the caves, which are divided into five categories based on hydro-geochemistry data. The formation of some proxies in speleothem, such as Mg/Ca, is likely to be affected by those processes.

Understanding the ongoing speleogenic processes that produce sinkholes and control the vital drinking water supplies of Florida and much else of the world is necessary research. This article （and the associated poster presentation） discusses theoretical processes that may act in addition to mass dissolution kinetics in producing voids, conduits and caves in autogenic karst landforms. Possible theoretical factors that affect these speleogenic processes are： microscopic mixing corrosion （low constant flow, low constant flow against current, temperature-induced mixing corrosion, and pressure-induced mixing corrosion in karst matrix）, random dissolution models, simulation of gravity-induced microscopic breakdown, and storm surge effects. Finally, a theoretical model is discussed that unifies these various microscopic processes into a macro-scale process, called internal pressure sculpting. Computer models were designed to illustrate these theoretical processes： Non-calibrated computer models simulating each process discussed in this paper are presented for illustration, as well as the preliminary results of calibrated models depicting random dissolution, mechanical breakdown, and storm surge effects. The theoretical processes discussed and simulated may have major effects on cave morphology. Computer simulations appear to accurately portray the shape and form of some cave features with dissolutional morphologies. Theoretical discussion concludes with a general discussion of possible improvements to the presented models as well as the ability to generalize theoretical processes to hypogenic, halogenic, and autogenic speleogenesis.

Effects of mineral-organic fertilizer on the biomass of green Chinese cabbage and potential carbon sequestration ability in karst areas of Southwest China

The karst mountain areas of Southwest China contain barren farmland soils and suffer from nutritional and water deficiencies that affect crop productivity. Hence,it is imperative to apply suitable fertilizers to restore soil fertility and maintain crop yield. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of mineral-organic fertilizer(MOF)made of potassic rock and organic waste on the growth of crops. For this purpose, green Chinese cabbage grown using three different fertilization methods including MOF,inorganic fertilizer(IF), and a control was evaluated. We determined soil water content, agronomic characteristics,and biomass of green Chinese cabbage in different treatments. Furthermore, surface runoff from the pot experiments and soil leachate from pot experiments were collected to determine water temperature, pH, and cation and anion concentrations. The results demonstrate thatMOF can improve the soil water-holding capacity of soil,and the basic agronomic characteristics of the cabbage treated with MOF were superior to those with IF. Using MOF can promote the increase in cabbage ***, the concentration of inorganic carbon(largely in the form of HCO_3^-) in surface runoff water treated by MOF was higher than the other treatments, establishing carbon sequestration potential. This work provides a novel and environmentally friendly fertilization pattern in karst areas, which will improve crop yield and also increase the carbon sequestration potential of crops.

A highly efficient fluorescence material dinuclear zinc polymer [Zn2（mhbd）2（dca）2]n （1, Hmhbd is 3-methoxy-2-hydroxybenzaldehyde, dca is N（CN）2？） has been synthesized under room temperature and structurally characterized by elemental analysis, IR, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The structure belongs to the triclinic system, space group P with a = 8.475（1）, b = 9.595（1）, c = 15.001（1） A, α = 86.84（1）, β = 81.10（1）, γ = 68.78（1）°, Mr = 565.15, V = 1123.5（1）？3, Dc = 1.671 g？cm–3, F（000） = 568, μ = 2.185 mm–1, R = 0.0451, and wR = 0.1297. 1 is a dinuclear zinc complex which further constructs a 1D chain through double μ1,5-dca bridge. Luminescent property and Hirshfeld surface analysis of 1 have been studied. The result indicates that the fluorescence intensity of complex 1 is forty-one times the fluorescence intensity of Hmhbd ligand.

Effects of Fe3+ and Ca2+ on sorption of phenanthrene by Humin in karst soil,Southwest China

Humin(HM) is the main organic matter component to af fect the migration and transformation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs) in soil. The study on infl uence of the morphology change of inorganic ions on the adsorption of PAHs in soil and its organic matter is still rare at microscopic scale. In this paper, yellow soil humin(YS-HM) and lime soil humin(LS-HM) were chosen as samples, then Fe^(3+) and Ca^(2+) were added into samples to facilitate the precipitation by changing the existing conditions of ions, and the mechanism by which inorganic precipitation changed adsorption capacity of karst soil was analyzed from the microscopic scale. The results showed that the adsorption capacity of HM reduced with the inorganic precipitation increasing. The precipitation of Ca^(2+)and Fe^(3+) both reduced the adsorption capacity of YS-HM and LS-HM by 61.71% and 71.83% on average, respectively. The results of scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive spectrometry(SEM-EDS) and pore analysis showed that the HM porosity decreased after formation of Ca^(2+) and Fe^(3+) precipitation. According to the value of Freundlich parameter n, it may be because the precipitation or colloid of Ca^(2+) and Fe^(3+) fi lled micropores and covers high-energy adsorption sites of the HM. This research provides theoretical support for studying the PAHs migration and bioavailability of Calcium-rich in karst soil.

Geothermal reservoir are the vehicle of geothermal resources and their occurrence as well as the storage mass. Precise description and evaluation of geothermal reservoir serves to be the cornerstone of geothermal resource exploration and exploitation. Based on the principles and basic train of geothermal reservoir evaluation, in this work, the content of geothermal reservoir evaluation was determined and the value range of geothermal reservoir evaluation parameters was discussed in combination with the actual production data of two types of geothermal reservoir in North China: The Neogene Guantao Formation sandstone pore-type geothermal reservoir, and the CambrianOrdovician and Middle Proterozoic Jixian carbonate karst-fissure-type geothermal reservoir. An evaluation method for the sandstone pore-type and the carbonate karstfissure-type geothermal reservoir is finally established based on the analysis of the production data, i.e. the values of geothermal reservoir temperature, geothermal fluid production, reinjection, physical properties and other parameters are assigned, and the geometric average value of the assigned values for the above-mentioned parameters is taken as the overall evaluation index of geothermal reservoir. From large to small, this index categorizes geothermal reservoir into three grades:Ⅰ, Ⅱ and Ⅲ, which corresponds to advantageous, moderate advantageous and disadvantageous geothermal reservoir respectively. The geothermal reservoir of the same grade are further classified in light of the index value, thus realizing the comprehensive evaluation of geothermal reservoir.

Characteristics and Genetic Analysis of the Deep-buried Weathered-crust karst Hydrocarbon Reservoirs of the Lower Paleozoic group in the Tarim Basin

The genetic analysis of the deep-buried reservoirs of the Lower Paleozoiccarbonate rocks in the Tarim basin is a difficult task involving many factors. Firstly, the objectof study is carbonate rocks, which have undergone a long term of modification. Secondly, the rocksare deeply buried with depths of 3800-7000 m in the Tarim basin. The primary reservoir propertiesformed in the deposition have been strongly modified during the deep burial process. Concurrently,the different burial depths in different areas result in diversities of burial temperature,pressure, underground water, hydrochemistry and various physicochemical changes, which further leadto differences in the diagenetic type, diagenetic property, diagenetic degree and their impacts onthe reservoir properties. The Lower Paleozoic Cambrian and Ordovician carbonate reservoirs in theTarim basin can be grouped into four types, i.e., paleo-weathered-crust reservoirs, reef reservoirs,buried karst reservoirs and dolomite reservoirs. This paper presents a detailed discussion on thevertical and horizontal distribution characteristics, morphological division, reservoir propertiesand the efficiency in accumulating hydrocarbons of the paleo-weathered-crust type. Furthermore, itsgenesis is also analyzed. We proposed that the composition of the carbonate rocks, the tectonicmovement with associated fractures and fissures, the paleomorphology and paleoclimate, the sea levelfluctuation, and the protection of the pores and fissures by the deep burial diagenesis and burialdissolution are the main factors controlling the formation of the paleo-weathered-crust *** also consider that the petroleum exploration of the Lower Paleozoic carbonate rocks should befocused on the pale-weathered-crust reservoirs.

Evolution Characteristics and Influence Factors of Deep Groundwater Depression Cone in North China Plain,China——A Case Studyin Cangzhou Region

The North China Plain（NCP） is one of the global hotspots of groundwater depletion, groundwater is almost the only source of water for agricultural, industrial and drinking water in this region. After long-term＇s over-exploitation of deep groundwater, there appeared several deep groundwater depression cones, such as Cangzhou cone, Dezhou cone, Hengshui cone, Tianjin cone, etc., in which the Cangzhou cone is one of the typical cones for its special geography and hydrogeology conditions. In this study, the authors intended to analyze the evolution characteristics and influence factors of deep groundwater depression cone in Cangzhou region, especially the No. III aquifer depression cone, which is the main exploitation zone in this region. Analysis of the evolution of the groundwater depression cone of the No. III aquifer group in Cangzhou region showed that this process can be divided into four stages, namely, development, stable development, rapid expansion, and gradual recovery. The shape and evolution characteristics of the depression cone at different stages are described by analyzing the evolution of the-30,-40, and-50 contours of the groundwater table, for example the closed area of water table contour of-50 m has been enlarged from 95 km2 in 1985 to 6 528.5 km2 in 2005. The dominant factors that affect the evolution characteristics at different stages are proposed. The results showed that relatively long dry periods with less precipitation, special geological and hydrogeological conditions, and sharply increased water consumption for industrial and agricultural development are the main factors that cause the formation of deep groundwater depression cones. Meanwhile, an environmental response against groundwater exploitation is presented, and rational solutions are suggested to avert water crisis.
