Oxidative stress is implicated in male infertility and significantly higher reactive oxygen species are detected in 25% of infertile males. Although different agents of various alternative medicines, including traditional Chinese medicine, have been tried with varying success, evidence remains limited on whether and how much herbs or supplements might help increase the anti-oxidant ability of the sperm. This study examined the anti-oxidative effects of icariin, a flavonoid isolated from Herba Epimedii, on the human sperm. We prepared the FeSO4/H202-damaged human sperms, which were co-cultured with icariin in vitro, and then observed the changes of the sperm by employing Raman mi- cro-spectroscopy. The results showed that Raman mapping with a 514 nm excitation laser allowed clear differentiation of the nucleus, neck, and, in particular, the mitochondria-rich middle piece of a human sperm cell. The effect oficariin on different organelles of the sperm was quantified by localized spectral Raman signatures obtained within milli-seconds, and icariin could keep the ＂Raman fingerprint＂ of the human sperm the same as the control groups, suggesting that icariin could protect the human sperm from being damaged by FeSO4/H202. Icariin may serve as a tonifying and replenishing agent of herbal origin for enhancing reproductive fimctions.

Comparison of Clinical Efficacy of Three Surgical Methods in the Treatment of Pterygium

Purpose:To investigate and compare the efficacy of amniotic membrane transplantation,corneal limbus stem cell conjunctival transplantation and pedicle conjunctival flap transposition in the treatment of ***:.A total of 155 patients with pterygium were retrospectively analyted:.53 cases who received amniotic membrane transplantation,.41 who underwent corneal limbus stem cells conjunctival transplantation,and 61 patients who had pedicle conjunctival flap ***:Patients in the three groups had no significant differences in terms of age,times since surgery,or extent of pterygium extension onto the cornea (F:1.194,0.639,0.140 respectively;all P>0.05)..A total of 137 out of 155 patients (88.4%) completed 6 months of follow *** recurrence rates of pterygium for the three surgeries (amniotic membrane transplantation,.corneal limbus stem cells conjunctival transplantation and pedicle conjunctival flap transposition) were 14.6%,13.9% and 7.7%,*** significant difference was identified when comparing the recurrence rate between any two groups(X2:.0.008,1.211 and 0.890;P:0.593,0.218 and 0.276)..Five patients presented with postoperative complications,.including 3 cases of sub-conjunctival hemorrhage,1 case of amniotic membrane dissolution,and 1 case of conjunctival cyst,accounting for 3.64% of all ***:These three surgical methods are equally effective in preventing the recurrence of pterygium after excision.

Introduction:Blunt thoracic aortic injury(BTAI)is rare in elderly *** the population ages and life expectancy increases,the frequency of this injury will increase,while the treatment and outcomes remain ***:We retrospectively analyzed the collected data of patients>60 years old with BTAI to investigate the mechanism of trauma;time interval from injury to diagnosis;type and timing of surgical intervention;aortic arch pattern;choice of left subclavian artery reconstruction;endograft to treat BTAI;length of the endovascular procedure;endoleaks;complications including stroke,paraplegia,and renal failure;length of hospital stay(LOS)and intensive care unit stay(***);and 30-day ***:Five elderly trauma patients were found to have ***(80%)were males,the cohort mean age was68 years,the major mechanism of trauma was fall injury,and the associated injury was thoracic *** patients were transferred to our hospital,and emergency computed tomography angiography showed BTAI in each *** average time interval from injury to diagnosis was 2.7 *** patients suddenly showed signs of instability in their vital signs and underwent immediate endovascular repair,while 3 patients underwent delayed endovascular *** injury site was located in the aortic isthmus just distal to the origin of the left subclavian artery;the aortic arch pattern was II(80.0%)in 4 cases and III in 1 case(20.0%).The choice of left subclavian artery reconstruction included chimney,double chimney,prefenestration,and chimney combined with in situ *** to treat BTAI included the Ankura(Lifetech Scientific,Shenzhen,China)and the C-TAG(***&Associates,Flagstaff,AZ USA).The length of the endovascular procedure was 75.4 min;there were no endoleaks and no complications including stroke,paraplegia,or renal *** average LOS was25 days,and the average *** of 2 patients was 15 days,with no 30-day ***:Elderly patien

[Objectives]To observe the clinical effect of dark tea with pericarpium citri reticulateae combined with metformin for type 2 diabetes mellitus.[Methods]A total of 80 cases of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus were randomly divided into the control group and the observation group with 40 cases in each *** control group was given metform for treatment,and the observation group was given dark tea with pericarpium citri reticulateae combined with metformin for *** two groups were continuously treated for 12 *** indexes of patients were observed and recorded,such as the body mass index(BMI),abdominal circumference(AC),hemoglobin A1c(HbA1c),fasting blood glucose(FBG),postprandial 2 h blood glucose(P2hBG),uric acid(UA),total cholesterol(TC),and triglyceride(TG).The incidence of adverse reactions during the treatment period and the patient satisfaction for treatment in the two groups were counted.[Results]After treatment,the FBG,P2hBG and HbA1c in the two groups were decreased when compared with those before treatment(P0.05).The incidence of adverse reactions was 2.5%in the observation group and 5.0%in the control group,the difference was not statistically significant(P>0.05).The patient satisfaction was 97.5%in the observation group and 55.0%in the control group,the difference was significant(P<0.05).[Conclusions]The curative effect of dark tea with pericarpium citri reticulateae combined with metformin for type 2 diabetes mellitus is better than that of western medicine alone and has no o

In this study, we conducted a clinical analysis of lymphocyte subtypes in 268 patients with Parkinson＇s disease （PD） to assess their clinical impact as a potential marker of advanced PD in Chinese patients. The participants comprised 268 sporadic PD patients and 268 healthy controls. The numbers of natural killer （NK） cells and CD3＋, CD3＋CD4＋, CD3＋CD8＋, and CD19＋ lympho- cytes from peripheral blood were determined by immunos- taining and flow cytometric analysis and the percentages of these CD＋ T cells were calculated. The ratio of regulatory T （Treg）/helper T 17 （Thl7） lymphocytes from 64 PD patients and 46 controls was determined by flow cytometric analysis. The results showed that the percentage of NK cells was higher in advanced PD patients than in controls （22.92% ± 10.08% versus 19.76% ±10.09%, P= 0.006）, while CD3＋ T cells are decreased （62.93% ±9.27% versus 65.75% ± 9.13%, P = 0.005）. The percentage of CD19＋ B cells in male patients was lower （P = 0.021） than in female patients, whereas NK cells were increased （P 〈 0.0001）. The scores on the Unified Parkinson＇s Disease Rating Scale （UPDRS） and the Non-Motor Symptoms Scale in late-onset PD patients were significantly higher than those in earlyonset patients （P = 0.024 and P = 0.007, respectively）. The percentage of CD19＋ B cells in patients with UPDRS scores 〉24 was lower than in those with scores 〈24 （10.17% ± 4.19% versus 12.22% ± 5.39%, P = 0.009）. In addition, the Treg/Th17 ratio in female patients was higher than that in female controls （13.88 ± 6.32 versus 9.94 ±4.06, P = 0.042）. These results suggest that the percentages of NK cells, CD3＋ T cells, and CD19＋ B cells along with the Treg/Th17 ratio in peripheral blood may be used to predict the risk of PD in Chinese individuals and provide fresh avenues for novel diagnostic biomarkers and therapeutic designs.

Accumulating evidence has indicated that long non-coding RNAs(lncRNAs)play critical roles in the development and progression of cancers,including esophageal squamous cell carcinoma(ESCC).However,the mechanisms of lncRNAs in ESCC are still incompletely understood and therapeutic attempts for in vivo targeting cancer-associated lncRNA remain a *** RNA-sequencing analysis,we identified that LLNLR-299G3.1 was a novel ESCC-associated ***-299G3.1 was up-regulated in ESCC tissues and cells and promoted ESCC cell proliferation and *** of LLNLR-299G3.1 with ASO(antisense oligonucleotide)resulted in opposite ***,LLNLR-299G3.1 bound to cancerassociated RNA binding proteins and regulated the expression of cancer-related genes,including OSM,TNFRSF4,HRH3,and ***-seq(chromatin isolation by RNA purification and sequencing)revealed that these genes contained enriched chromatin binding sites for *** experiments confirmed that the effects of LLNLR-299G3.1 on ESCC cell proliferation were dependent on interaction with HRH3 and ***,intravenous delivery of placental chondroitin sulfate A binding peptide-coated nanoparticles containing antisense oligonucleotide(pICSA-BP-ANPs)strongly inhibited ESCC tumor growth and significantly improved animal survival in ***,our results suggest that LLNLR-299G3.1 promotes ESCC malignancy through regulating gene-chromatin interactions and targeting ESCC by pICSA-BP-ANPs may be an effective strategy for the treatment of lncRNA-associated ESCC.

Construction of an easy-to-use predictive model for ultrasound-detected tophi to improve the detection of hidden tophi

Comparison of Two Kinds of Magnetic Nanoparticles In Vivo and In Vitro

This study compared a new type of polysaccharide-coated magnetic nanoparticles （in which the polysaccharide is derived from Angelica sinensis） with the dextran magnetic nanoparticles in terms of preparation, biocompatibility and tissue distribution in vivo and in vitro in order to examine the potential application of Angelica polysaccharide as a novel carrier in magnetic drug targeting （MDT）. Magnetic nanoparticles were prepared by chemical co-precipitation. Their physical and chemical properties were determined by using the transmission electron microscope （TEM）, laser particle size analyzer （DLS） and vibrating sample magnetometer （VSM）, and their purity and structure by using X-ray diffractometer （XRD） and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy （FTIR）. The atomic absorption spectrometric method was performed for quantification of the iron content in different tissues. Histological sections were stained by Prussian blue staining to observe the disposition of magnetic nanoparticles in the liver and kidney. The results showed that both kinds of magnetic nanoparticles possessed small particle size, good dispersion and good magnetic properties. XRD showed the main component of the two magnetic nanoparticles was Fe3O4 crystals, and FTIR proved Fe3O4 was successfully coated by each polysaccharide, respectively. In vivo, Fe3O4-dextran accumulated in the liver, spleen and lung and Fe3O4-Angelica polysaccharide only in the spleen and lung. It was concluded that Angelica polysaccharide may be applied as a novel carrier in the preparation of magnetic nanoparticles.
