In this study, we have fabricated the functionalized nickel nanoparticles and investigated their effects on cellular uptake of quercetin in leukemia K562 cancer cells by using electrochemical assay. The results indicate that nickel nanoparticles could efficiently enhance the quercetin uptake and increase the intracellular accumulation in cancer cells, implying the great potential of functionalized nickel nanoparticles in target cancer therapy.

Effects of traditional Chinese medicine on intestinal mucosal permeability in early phase of severe acute pancreatitis

Background Traditional Chinese medicine has been used widely for many years in China to treat acute pancreatitis. We have investigated the effects of Dachengqi decoction on intestinal mucosal permeability and outcome in patients with severe acute pancreatitis （SAP）. Methods Forty patients with sustained SAP that required admission to the surgical intensive care unit were enrolled prospectively in the study. All of these patients were divided randomly into the Dachengqi decoction group （n=-20） and control group （n=-20） on admission. Intestinal permeability was assessed by measuring absorption of two metabolically inert markers, lactulose （L） and mannitol （M）, which were administered orally. Serum concentrations of endotoxin （lipopolysaccharide, LPS） and the ratio of lactulose to mannitol in urine （L/M） were detected in all patients. Results Compared with those in the control group, urinary L/M ratio decreased significantly in the Dachengqi decoction group on the 7th day after admission （P=0.001）. Also, serum concentrations of LPS were reduced on the 5th and 7th day after admission （P=-0.006, P=0.008, respectively）. Incidence of multiple organ dysfunction syndrome （MODS） and pancreatic infection was significantly lower in the Dachengqi decoction group compared with those in the control group （P=-0.038, P=-0.025, respectively）. Conclusion Dachengqi decoction may promote the recovery of intestinal mucosal permeability and decrease the incidence of MODS and pancreatic infection in patients with SAP.

AIM: To compare the outcomes between the Stretta procedure and laparoscopic toupet fundoplication(LTF) in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease(GERD)-related extra-esophageal ***: From January 2011 to February 2012, a total of 98 patients diagnosed with GERD-related extra-esophageal symptoms who met the inclusion criteria were enrolled in this study. All patients who either underwent the Stretta procedure or LTF treatment have now completed the 3-year follow-up. Primary outcome measures, including frequency and severity of extra-esophageal symptoms, proton pump inhibitor(PPI) use, satisfaction, and postoperative complications, were assessed. The results of the Stretta procedure and LTF therapy were analyzed and ***: There were 47 patients in the Stretta group and 51 patients in the LTF group. Ninety patients were available at the 3-year follow-up. The total of the frequency and severity scores for every symptom improved in both groups(P 0.05). However, the score for globus hysterics was different between the Stretta group and the LTF group(4.9 ± 2.24 vs 3.2 ± 2.63, P < 0.05). After the Stretta procedure and LTF treatment, 29 and 33 patients in each group achieved PPI therapy independence(61.7% vs 64.7%, P = 0.835). The patients in the LTF group were more satisfied with their quality of life than those in the Stretta procedure group(P < 0.05). Most complications resolved without intervention within two weeks; however, two patients in the LTF group still suffered from severe dysphagia 2 wk after the operation, and it improved after bougie dilation treatment in both ***: The Stretta procedure and LTF were both safe and effective for the control of GERD-related extra-esophageal symptoms and the reduction of PPI use.

The collected tungsten carbide/cobalt scrapped waste typically contains approximately 90% tungsten carbide and 10% cobalt.A nitric method is used to extract tungsten and cobalt from tungsten-containing *** waste is first dissolved in nitric acid,which then makes cobalt soluble and becomes cobalt nitrate *** waste also oxidizes tungsten carbide to insoluble tungstenic acid *** tungsten carbide scraps are obtained from leftover of LCD glass cutting,after applying the same process as above,the remaining glass also needs to be separated from the tungstenic *** analysis shows that 93.8% of cobalt and 97.72% of tungsten can be obtained separately by this wet chemical *** ICP analysis,no more tungsten ion remains after 2 h reaction in the cobalt recovery when 12 N of nitric acid is used for *** recovery materials obtained for tungsten are tungsten oxide and for cobalt a mixture of Co3O4 and CoO.

The geological behaviors of wet outflow deposition fly ash were investigated, including the feature of in-situ single and even bridge cone penetration test (CPT) curves, the change of the penetration parameters and vane strength with the increase of depth and the difference of the penetration resistance on and down the water level. Drilling, CPT and vane shear test were carried out in silty clay, fine sand, and fly ash of the ash-dam. The CPT curves of the fly ash do not show a critical depth. The cone resistance (qc) of the fly ash is smaller than that of silty clay or sand; the friction resistance is smaller than that of filling silty clay, similar to that of deposition silty clay or more than that of fine sand; the friction ratio is smaller than that of filling silty clay, or more than that of deposition silty clay or much more than that of fine sand. The specific penetration resistance (ps) is similar to that of filling silty clay, or more than that of deposition silty clay. There is a clear interface effect between the deposition fly ash and the clay. Interface effect of ps-h curve at the groundwater table is clear, and ps of the fly ash reduces significantly under the table. The vane strength of the fly ash increases as the depth increases. The deposition fly ash with wet outflow is similar to silt in the geological behavior.

We report in this study the effects of red-emitting CdTe QDs capped with cysteamine(Cys-CdTe) on the in vitro anticancer activity of the well-known flavenoid quercetin(Qu). Various techniques, including the methylthiazolyldiphenyl-tetrazolium bromide assay, the real-time cell electronic sensing system, the optical and fluorescence imaging, and electrochemical methods have been utilized to study the potential interactions of Cys-CdTe QDs with Qu. The observations demonstrate that the safe-dosage Cys-CdTe QDs can greatly improve the drug uptake and enhance the inhibition efficiency of Qu towards the proliferation of cancer cells such as HepG2 cells. This study implies that Cys-CdTe QDs may be used for cancer therapy and that they exert a synergic anticancer effect when bound to drug molecules.

Spontaneous rupture and bleeding from the carotid artery in acute promyelocytic leukemia （APL）patients leading to pseudoaneurysm （PSA） formation has not been reported. We first successfully treated an APL patient with leli internal carotid artery rupture during chemotherapy leading to PSA using ultrasound-guided thrombin iniection （UGTI）.
