The Combination of Indigenous Knowledge and Geo-Informatics for Water Harvesting Siting in the jordanian badia

jordan is located in an arid to semi arid region where around 90% of its land receives an average annual precipitation of less than 100 mm while only 3% of the land receives an average annual precipitation of 300 mm or more. jordan is characterised as a “water scarce” country because the current per capita share of water is estimated to be of the order of 140 m3 per year which is well below the 1000 m3 threshold. Rainwater harvesting is the accumulating and storing, of rainwater. It has been used to provide drinking water, water for livestock, water for irrigation or to refill aquifers as a groundwater recharge. GIS has been widely used in selecting the best sites for water harvesting schemes. This research aims at selecting optimum sites for water harvesting schemes in the jordan arid lands (badia) using indigenous knowledge and geo-informatics. To achieve this aim, a community-based research and desktop investigating is applied. The community-based research focused on consulting with 200 stakeholders form local communities where they provided knowledge on opportunities and constrains form their experience on water management in the arid lands where they live and interact. Also they provided information on potential location for water collecting sites that has been used for ages to provide water to humans and livestock. On the other hand, desktop research is conducted on sitting criteria for water harvesting based on physical and socio-economic characteristics. The physical criteria include rainfall volumes, slope, distance to water courses (wadis), distance form geologic faults and soil texture, where socio-economic criteria include distance to groundwater wells, distance to urban area, distance to agriculture activities and distance to international brooders. This selecting criterion in combination with indigenous knowledge is used within GIS environment to identify optimum sites for water harvesting. Runoff Estimation for Suggested Water Harvesting Sites in the Northern jordanian badia

jordan is characterized by severe weather conditions, therefore great temporal and spatial variations in rainfall;runoff and evaporation amounts are expected. Water harvesting has been practiced in jordan throughout history for both irrigation and household purposes. A major research project was carried out in the jordanian badia on site selection criteria for rain water harvesting systems based on the integration between indigenous knowledge and the use of Geo-informatics. This work was followed by conducting a geophysical and soil investigation for five potential sites. In this study, GIS was used to investigate the potential of having enough runoff in the five selected sites to establish water harvesting dams based on rainfall, evaporation data and catchments’ areas for the selected sites. It was found that the estimated runoff that could be harvested on annual basis at these sites varies between 0.2 Million Cubic Meters (MCM) in Alaasra site to 0.82 MCM in Al-Manareh (Al-Ghuliasi) site. This indicates that these sites have the potential for small scale water harvesting that could be utilized by local livestock owners in the area to water their livestock.

We studied the effect of titanium dioxide(TiO_(2))nanoparticles(NPs)on dielectric behavior of Naþion-conducting salt-complexed polymer nanocomposite system formed from a binary polymer blend of poly(ethylene oxide)(PEO)and polyvinyl pyrrolidone(PVP),with the addition of both sodium metaperiodate(NaIO_(4))at concentration 10 wt.%and TiO_(2) NPs of size10 nm,at concentrations 1,2,3,4 and 5 wt.%.Free standing nanocomposite PEO/PVP/NaIO_(4)/TiO_(2) films(150m)were characterized at room-temperature by analyzing their complex electrical impedance and dielectric spectra in the range 1 Hz–1 *** the concentration of 3 wt.%of TiO_(2) NPs,both ion conductivity and dielectric permittivity of the PEO/PVP/NaIO_(4)/TiO_(2) ion-conducting dielectrics reach an enhancement by more than one order of magnitude as compared to nanoadditive-free case.

Short-Term Response of Soil Microbial Biomass to Different Chabazite Zeolite Amendments

Zeolitites (ZTs) are rocks containing more than 50% of zeolite minerals and are known to be a suitable material for agricultural purposes by improving soil physicochemical properties and nitrogen (N) use efficiency. However, little is known about their effects on soil microbial biomass. This study aimed to evaluate short-term effects of different chabazite-rich ZT (CHAZT) amendments on soil microbial biomass and activity. A silty-clay agricultural soil was amended in three different ways, including the addition of natural (5% and 15%) and NH_4^+-enriched (10%) CHAZT. Soil dissolved organic carbon (C), total dissolved N, NH_4^+, NO_3^-, NO_2^-, microbial biomass C and N, and ergosterol were measured periodically over 16 d in a laboratory incubation. To verify the microbial immobilization of the N derived from NH_4^+-enriched CHAZT, a high15N source was used for enriching the mineral to measure the microbial biomass δ15N signature. An increase in the ergosterol content was observed in the soil amended with 5% natural CHAZT. However, no similar result was observed in the soil amended with 15% natural CHAZT, suggesting that the fungal biomass was favored at a lower CHAZT application rate. In the soil amended with NH+ 4-enriched CHAZT, microbial biomass N was related to NO_3^-production over time and inversely related to NH_4^+, suggesting high nitrification process. Isotopic measurements on microbial biomass confirmed immediate assimilation of N derived from NH_4^+-enriched CHAZT. These results suggested that the NH_4^+-enriched CHAZT used in this study supplied an immediately available N pool to the microbial biomass.

＜正＞The main structural element goveming the morphology,hydrology and hydrogeology of jordan is the Dead Sea Rift fault *** trends nearly N-S and forms an active part of the African-Syrian Rift,which extends from east Africa through the Red Sea,Dead Sea to south Turkey. Sedimentary rocks cover almost the whole area of jordan and have been subdivided into two major aquifers complex:upper and lower aquifers separated by more or less an impermeable sequence of marl and marly limestone of the Upper Cretaceous *** upper aquifer complex consists of limestone,chert,and marly limestone of the Upper Cretaceous,while the lower aquifer complex consists mainly of sandstones of Lower Cretaceous and older ages. The geothermal activity in jordan is expressed entirely in the form of thermal *** geothermal phenomena such as fumarolic activity and boiling mud pools or altered ground are not *** location of nearly all thermal springs and anomalously thermal wells is dictated by their proximity to the Dead Sea Rift. Generally,they are distributed along a distance of about 200km on the eastern side of the Rift and discharge their water from the lower aquifer *** Zara- Zarqa Ma’in thermal springs are considered as the major geothermal manifestation in jordan due to its high temperatures and flow *** heat source of the thermal water in the lower aquifer is a result of the deep circulation of water within the Paleozoic sandstones receiving heat from a normal to slightly elevated geothermal gradient. Away from the Rift in Jiza region,many wells were drilled to the upper aquifer complex and discharge thermal water with temperatures up to 46℃.The dense faults net of the different trends in this area,strongly suggested that the two-aquifer systems are hydraulically *** allows the thermal water from the lower aquifer to flow up via faults （conduits） into the upper aquifer raising the groundwater temperature in the vicinity of these faults. Rear-edge populations of montane species are known to be vulnerable to environmental change,which could affect them by habitat reduction and *** requirements of two cold-adapted boreo-alpine owl species—Boreal Owl(Aegolius funereus)and Pygmy Owl(Glaucidium passerinum)—have been studied in refugial montane populations in the western Rhodopes,South *** on owl presence and forest stand attributes recorded in situ have been used to identify significant predictors for owl *** results revealed Boreal Owl’s preference for comparatively dense forests(high canopy closure values),big trees(diameter at breast height≥50 cm)and large amount of fallen dead wood in penultimate stage of *** Pygmy Owl the only significant explanatory variable was the total amount of fallen dead *** suggest preference of both owl species for forests with structural elements typical of old-growth forests(i.e.,veteran trees,deadwood),the Pygmy Owl being less prone to inhabit managed *** at the rear edge of their Palearctic breeding range in Europe both Boreal and Pygmy Owls are of high conservation value on the Balkan ***,additional efforts are needed for their conservation in the light of climate change and resulting alteration of forest structural *** findings can be used for adjusting forest management practices in order to ensure both,sustainable profit from timber and continuous species survival.
