Designing terahertz sensors for highly sensitive detection of nanoscale thin films and a few biomolecules poses a substantial challenge but is crucial for unlocking their full potential in scientific research and advanced *** work presents a strategy for optimizing metamaterial sensors in detecting small quantities of dielectric *** amount of frequency shift depends on intrinsic properties(electric field distribution,Q-factor,and mode volume)of the bare cavity as well as the overlap volume of its high-electric-field zone(s)and the *** by the simplified dielectric perturbation theory,interdigitated electric split-ring resonators(ID-eSRRs)are devised to significantly enhance the detection sensitivity compared with eSRRs without interdigitated ***-eSRR’s fin-gers redistribute the electric field,creating strongly localized enhancements,which boost analyte *** periodic change of the inherent antiphase electric field reduces radiation loss,leading to a higher *** with ID-eSRR sensors operating at around 300 GHz demonstrate a remarkable 33.5 GHz frequency shift upon depositing a 150 nm SiO_(2)layer as an analyte simulant,with a figure of merit improvement of over 50 times compared with structures without interdigitated *** rational design offers a promising avenue for highly sensitive detection of thin films and trace biomolecules.

Anti-angiogenesis in hepatocellular carcinoma treatment: Current evidence and future perspectives

Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) is among the most common cancer diseases *** hypervascularisation is an essential step for HCC tumorigenesis and can be targeted by transarterial chemoembolization(TACE).This interventional method is the standard treatment for patients with intermediate stage HCC,but is also applied as "bridging" therapy for patients awaiting liver transplantation in many centers *** the devascularization effect induced by TACE is transient,consequently resulting in repeated cycles of TACE every 4-8 *** documented survival benefits,TACE can also induce the up-regulation of proangiogenic and growth factors,which might contribute to accelerated progression in patients with incomplete *** 2007,sorafenib,a multi-tyrosine kinase and angiogenesis inhibitor,was approved as the first systemic treatment for advanced stage *** active targeted compounds,either inhibitors of angiogenesis and/or growth factors,are currently being investigated in numerous clinical *** overcome revascularisation or tumor progression under TACE treatment it seems therefore attractive to combine TACE with systemic targeted agents,which might theoretically block the effects of proangiogenic and growth *** the last 12 mo,several retrospec-tive or prospective cohort studies combining TACE and sorafenib have been ***,robust results of the efficacy and tolerability of such combination strategies as proven by randomized,controlled trials are awaited in the next two years.

Tooth wear against ceramic crowns in posterior region: a systematic literature review

The objective of this systematic review was to assess tooth wear against ceramic crowns in posterior region in vitro and in vivo. An electronic PubMed search was conducted to identify studies on tooth wear against ceramic crowns in posterior region. The selected studies were analyzed in regard to type of crowns, natural antagonist, measuring protocol and outcome. From a yield of 1 000 titles, 43 articles were selected for full-text analysis; finally, no in vitro and only five in vivo studies met the inclusion criteria. As there is heterogeneity in design, used measuring method, ceramics and analysis-form, a meta-analysis was not possible. Results of these studies are very controversial which makes a scientifically valid comparison impossible. This review indicated that some all-ceramic crowns are as wear friendly as metal-ceramic crowns. Up to now, it has been impossible to associate tooth wear with any specific causal agent. The role of ceramic surface treatment that might be responsible for the changing in rate of tooth wear seems undetermined as yet through clinical trials. The literature reveals that studies on this topic are subject to a substantial amount of bias. Therefore, additional clinical studies, properly designed to diminish bias, are warranted.

Eosinophilic cholangitis is a potentially underdiagnosed etiology in indeterminate biliary stricture

To investigate presence and extent of eosinophilic cholangitis (EC) as well as IgG4-related disease in patients with indeterminate biliary stricture (IBS).METHODSAll patients with diagnosis of sclerosing cholangitis (SC) and histopathological samples such as biopsies or surgical specimens at university Hospital Frankfurt from 2005-2015 were included. Histopathological diagnoses as well as further clinical course were reviewed. Tissue samples of patients without definite diagnosis after complete diagnostic work-up were reviewed regarding presence of eosinophilic infiltration and IgG4 positive plasma cells. Eosinophilic infiltration was as well assessed in a control group of liver transplant donors and patients with primary sclerosing *** hundred and thirty-five patients with SC were included. In 10/135 (13.5%) patients, no potential cause of IBS could be identified after complete diagnostic work-up and further clinical course. After histopathological review, a post-hoc diagnosis of EC was established in three patients resulting in a prevalence of 2.2% (3/135) of all patients with SC as well as 30% (3/10) of patients, where no cause of IBS was identified. 2/3 patients with post-hoc diagnosis of EC underwent surgical resection with suspicion for malignancy. Diagnosis of IgG4-related cholangitis was observed in 7/135 patients (5.1%), whereas 3 cases were discovered in post-hoc analysis. 6/7 cases with IgG4-related cholangitis (85.7%) presented with eosinophilic infiltration in addition to IgG4 positive plasma cells. There was no patient with eosinophilic infiltration in the control group of liver transplant donors (n = 27) and patients with primary sclerosing cholangitis (n = 14).CONCLUSIONEC is an underdiagnosed benign etiology of SC and IBS, which has to be considered in differential diagnosis of IBS.

Palaua(Malveae,Malvaceae)comprises 15 species endemic to the hyperarid coastal desert of Chile and *** far,chromosome counts have been known for two diploid species(2n=2x=10)*** we report new chromosome numbers for 12 species of Palaua and four of its sister group *** including 4,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole dihydrochloride(DAPI)/chromomycin(CMA3)fluorescent banding are presented for selected species representative of each of the main clades of *** important finding is the discovery of polyploids in one exclusively tetraploid species(***)and four species with mixed diploid and tetraploid cytotypes(***,***,***,and ***).The diploid and tetraploid karyotypes are all unimodal,symmetrical and show one or two pairs of satellite chromosomes with their associated CMA+/DAPI- band depending on the *** some of the tetraploids an autopolyploid origin is suggested.

Transepithelial transport of putrescine across monolayers of the human intestinal epithelial cell line, Caco-2

AIM: To study the transepithelial transport characteristics of the polyamine putrescine in human intestinal Caco-2 cell monolayers to elucidate the mechanisms of the putrescine intestinal absorption. METHODS: The transepithelial transport and the cellular accumulation of putrescine was measured using Caco-2 cell monolayers grown on permeable filters. RESULTS: Transepithelial transport of putrescine in physiological concentrations (> 0.5 mM) from the apical to basolateral side was linear. Intracellular accumulation of putrescine was higher in confluent than in fully differentiated Caco-2 cells, but still negligible (less than 0.5%) of the overall transport across the monolayers in apical to basolateral *** enhanced putrescine accumulation in Caco-2 cells by four fold, as well as putrescine conversion to spermidine and spermine by enhancing the activity of S adenosylmethionine decarboxylase. However, EGF did not have any significant influence on putrescine flux across the Caco-2 cell monolayers. Excretion of putrescine from Caco-2 cells into the basolateral medium did not exceed 50 picomoles, while putrescine passive flux from the apical to the basolateral chamber, contributed hundreds of micromoles polyamines to the basolateral chamber. CONCLUSION :Transepithelial transport of putrescine across Caco2 cell monolayers occurs in passive diffusion, and is not influenced when epithelial cells are stimulated to proliferate by a potent mitogen such as EGF.

The Role of Organic Matter During Metal Enrichment in Permian Kupferschiefer of the Rudna Mine,Southwest Poland

The bulk composition of organic matter and saturated and aromatic hydrocarbons extracted from 16 samples collected from two Kupferschiefer profiles in the Rudna mine, Southwest Poland has been analyzed to study the role of organic matter during base metal enrichment in the Kupferschiefer shale. The results indicated that the extract yields and saturated hydrocarbon yields decreased with increasing base metal contents. GC and GC/MS analyses indicated that n-alkanes and alkylated aromatic compounds were depleted and may have served as hydrogen donators for thermochemical sulfate reduction. The enrichment of base metals is closely connected with the destruction of hydrocarbons.

Surface roughness of zirconia for full-contour crowns after clinically simulated grinding and polishing

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of controlled intraoral grinding and polishing on the roughness of full-contour zirconia compared to classical veneered zirconia. Thirty bar-shaped zirconia specimens were fabricated and divided into two groups（n515）. Fifteen specimens（group 1） were glazed and 15 specimens（group 2） were veneered with feldspathic ceramic and then glazed. Prior to grinding,maximum roughness depth（Rmax） values were measured using a profilometer, 5 times per specimen. Simulated clinical grinding and polishing were performed on the specimens under water coolant for 15 s and 2 N pressure. For grinding, NTI diamonds burs with grain sizes of 20 mm, 10 mm, and 7.5 mm were used sequentially. The ground surfaces were polished using NTI kits with coarse, medium and fine polishers. After each step, Rmaxvalues were determined. Differences between groups were examined using one-way analysis of variance（ANOVA）. The roughness of group 1 was significantly lower than that of group 2. The roughness increased significantly after coarse grinding in both groups. The results after glazing were similar to those obtained after fine grinding for non-veneered zirconia. However, fine-ground veneered zirconia had significantly higher roughness than venerred, glazed zirconia. No significant difference was found between fine-polished and glazed zirconia, but after the fine polishing of veneered zirconia, the roughness was significantly higher than after *** can be concluded that for full-contour zirconia, fewer defects and lower roughness values resulted after grinding and polishing compared to veneered zirconia. After polishing zirconia, lower roughness values were achieved compared to glazing; more interesting was that the grinding of glazed zirconia using the NTI three-step system could deliver smooth surfaces comparable to untreated glazed zirconia surfaces.
