Analysis of metal ions in exhaled breath using a handheld sampler coupled to inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry

Various metals are fundamental elements in the human body. Detection of metals in the human body plays an important role in understanding health and disease but poses a great challenge to analytical science in noninvasiveness, sensitivity, and detection speed. In this study, a non-invasive handheld sampler was developed to couple to inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry（ICP-MS） for sensitive detection of metal ions in exhaled breath. Fourteen endogenous exhaled breath metals were simultaneously detected. The limits of detection（LOD） of 14 metals were found to be 0.046–0.134 ng L-1. Linear dynamic responses were found to range from 1.0 to 500 ng L-1. Satisfactory measurement precision（RSD: 1.18%–11.93%） was also *** concentrations of metal ions ranging from ng mL-1to mg mL-1levels in breath and blood, it is interesting to find that there is a relatively stable ratio(Rblood/breath: 3.55 ± 0.23) by comparing the levels of 9 metal ions in blood and exhaled ***, sensitive detections of 14 breath metal ions from patients with liver cancer and lung cancer were also successfully conducted. A multivariate statistical approach is established for biomarker discovery of breath metals between healthy volunteers and cancer patients, elucidating that cancer progression plays multifaceted roles in affecting the metal ions in exhaled ***, our data demonstrated that the new method can be not only used for the quantitative detection of trace metal species with high accuracy and high throughput but also for new insights into compositions and changes of metals in exhaled breath.

Objective:To elucidate how spinal manipulative therapy(SMT)exerts its analgesic effects through regulating brain function in lumbar disc herniation(LDH)patients by utilizing resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging(rs-f MRI).Methods:From September 2021 to September 2023,we enrolled LDH patients(LDH group,n=31)and age-and sex-matched healthy controls(HCs,n=28).LDH group underwent rs-f MRI at 2 distinct time points(TPs):prior to the initiation of SMT(TP1)and subsequent to the completion of the SMT sessions(TP2).SMT was administered once every other day for 30 min per session,totally 14 treatment sessions over a span of 4 *** did not receive SMT treatment and underwent only one f MRI ***,participants in LDH group completed clinical questionnaires on pain using the Visual Analog Scale(VAS)and the Japanese Orthopedic Association(JOA)score,whereas HCs did not undergo clinical scale *** effects on the brain were jointly characterized using the amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations(ALFF)and regional homogeneity(Re Ho).Correlation analyses were conducted between specific brain regions and clinical ***:Following SMT treatment,pain symptoms in LDH patients were notably alleviated and accompanied by evident activation of effects in the *** comparison to TP1,TP2 exhibited the most significant increase in ALFF values for Temporal_Sup_R and the most notable decrease in ALFF values for Paracentral_Lobule_L(voxelwise P30;FDR correction).Additionally,the most substantial enhancement in Re Ho values was observed for the Cuneus_R,while the most prominent reduction was noted for the Olfactory_R(voxelwise P30;FDR correction).Moreover,a comparative analysis revealed that,in contrast to HCs,LDH patients at TP1 exhibited the most significant increase in ALFF values for Temporal_Pole_Sup_L and the most notable decrease in ALFF values for Frontal_Mid_L(voxelwise P30;FDR correction).Fur
