To improve methane production from sewage sludge(SS),co-digestion of SS and microalgae(MA)was studied and the application of thermo-alkaline pretreatment to MA was evaluated.The results showed that thermo-alkaline pretreatment at 90℃ for 120 min on MA was the optimum pretreatment condition.Furthermore,when the volatile solids(VS)ratio of SS and MA was 1:2,the methane yield reached maximum(368.94 mL/g VS).Fourier transform infrared(FT-IR)and thermogravimetric analysis confirmed the synergetic effects of thermoalkaline pretreated MA on its co-digestion with SS.The analyses of microbial community indicated that Methanobacterium and Methanosarcina were the dominant methanogens during the co-digestion process.However,the relative abundance of Methanosarcina in thermoalkaline pretreated groups was higher compared to unpretreated groups.The microbial community structure might be affected by thermo-alkaline pretreatment rather than by the MA dosage in the co-digestion.

Effects of chlortetracycline,Cu and their combination on the performance and microbial community dynamics in swine manure anaerobic digestion

Swine manure was typical for the combined pollution of heavy metals and antibiotics. The effects of widely used veterinary antibiotic chlortetracycline（CTC）, Cu and their combination on swine manure anaerobic digestion performance and microbial community have never been investigated. Thus, four 2 L anaerobic digestion reactors were established including reactor A（control）, B（CTC spiked by 0.5 g/kg dry weight, dw）, C（Cu spiked by 5 g/kg dw） and D（combination of CTC, 0.5 g/kg dw, and Cu, 5 g/kg dw）, and dynamics of bacterial and archaeal community structure was investigated using high throughput sequencing method. Results showed that addition of CTC and Cu separately could increase the total biogas production by21.6% and 15.8%, respectively, while combination of CTC and Cu severely inhibited anaerobic digestion（by 30.3%）. Furthermore, corresponding to different stages and reactors, four kinds of microbes including bacteria and archaea were described in detail, and the effects of CTC, Cu and their combination mainly occurred at hydrolysis and acidification phases. The addition of Cu alone changed the dynamics of archaeal community significantly. It was genus Methanomassiliicoccus that dominated at the active methane production for A, B and D, while it was genus Methanobrevibacter and Methanoculleus for C.

A simple negative ion mobility spectrometer （IMS） is designed and used to investi- gate the factors that influence the number and efficiency of electrons generated by the needle-ring pulsed corona discharge electron source. Simulation with Ansoft Maxwell 12 is carried out to analyze the electric field distribution within the IMS, and to offer the basis and foundation for analyzing the measurement results. The measurement results of the quantities of electrons show that when the drift electric field strength and the ring inner diameter rise, both the number of ef- fective electrons and the effective electron rate are increased. When the discharge voltage becomes stronger, the number of effective electrons goes up while the effective electron rate goes down. In light of the simulation results, mechanisms underlying the effects of drift electric field strength, ring inner diameter, and discharge voltage on the effective electron number and effective electron rate are discussed. These will make great sense for designing negative ion mode IMS using the needle-ring pulsed corona discharge as the electron source.

Spatiotemporal dynamics of cell abundance,colony size and intracellular toxin concentrations of pelagic and benthic Microcystis in Lake Caohai,China

Lake Caohai has experienced extensive Microcystis blooms in recent years,and to improve its water quality,the local government carried out a series of water control measures.To better understand the dynamics of both pelagic and benthic Microcystis and their characteristics in Lake Caohai,we conducted a 1-year investigation from December 2015to December 2016 to gain a seasonal outlook on the distribution and dynamics of cell abundance,colony size and intracellular microcystins(MCs)of Microcystis.The results indicated that the Microcystis bloom occupied primarily the northeastern region and then moved gradually from lakeshore to lake center.The perennial southwesterly winds and the water inflow from northeast to southwest in Lake Caohai determined the spatiotemporal distribution of pelagic Microcystis.Benthic Microcystis was mainly distributed in the northeastern region in summer,occupied the lake center in autumn and then occupied the southeastern region in winter,determined by the sedimentation of pelagic Microcystis and the death of benthic Microcystis.Small colonies(20-60μm)overwintered more easily in both water column and sediment.The concentrations of intracellular toxin of benthic Microcystis were observed to be significantly higher than those of pelagic Microcystis.This might be because Microcystis synthesized large amount of MCs to acclimate to an unfavorable benthic environment.This knowledge on the dynamics of Microcystis expands our understanding of mechanisms underpinning the formation of Microcystis blooms.

Copper(Cu)exists in a variety of forms in different aquatic environments,and affects their bioavailability.In this study we provide a systematic review on toxicity of Cu which focuses on identifying evidence in the mechanisms of Cu toxicity,and apply an adverse outcome pathway(AOP)analysis to identify multiple potential mechanisms and their interactions of Cu toxicity to fish.This analysis process included the mechanisms of behavior toxicant,oxidative toxicant,ion regulation disruption toxicity,as well as endocrine disruption toxicity.It was found that at low levels of Cu exposure,swimming,avoid predators,locating prey and other sensory functions will be impaired,and the organism will suffer from metabolic alkalosis and respiratory acidosis following the inhibition of the carbonic anhydrase active.The main pathway of acute toxicity of Cu to fish is the inhibition of the Na^(+)/K^(+)-ATPase enzyme,and lead to reduced intracellular sodium absorption,as well as Cu-induced increased cell permeability,in turn resulting in increased sodium ion loss,leading to cardiovascular collapse and respiratory insufficiency.The endocrine disruption toxicity of Cu to fish caused growth inhibition and reproductive reduction.In addition,there are several key pathways of Cu toxicity that are affected by hardness(e.g.,Ca^(2+))and intracellular DOC concentrations,including inhibiting Cu-induction,improving branchial gas exchange,altering membrane transport functions,decreasing Na+loss,and increasing Na+uptake.The results of the AOP analysis will provide a robust framework for future directed research on the mechanisms of Cu toxicity.

Granular activated carbon(GAC)filtration can be employed to synchronously quench residual H_(2)O_(2)from the upstream UV/H_(2)O_(2)process and further degrade dissolved organicmatter(DOM).In this study,rapid small-scale column tests(RSSCTs)were performed to clarify the mechanisms underlying the interactions between H_(2)O_(2)and DOM during the GAC-based H_(2)O_(2)quenching process.It was observed that GAC can catalytically decompose H_(2)O_(2),with a long-lasting high efficiency(>80%for approximately 50,000 empty-bed volumes).DOM inhibited GAC-based H_(2)O_(2)quenching via a pore-blocking effect,especially at high concentrations(10 mg/L),with the adsorbed DOM molecules being oxidized by the continuously generated·OH;this further deteriorated the H_(2)O_(2)quenching efficiency.In batch experiments,H_(2)O_(2)could enhance DOM adsorption by GAC;however,in RSSCTs,it deteriorated DOM removal.This observation could be attributed to the different·OH exposure in these two systems.It was also observed that aging with H_(2)O_(2)and DOM altered the morphology,specific surface area,pore volume,and the surface functional groups of GAC,owing to the oxidation effect of H_(2)O_(2)and·OH on the GAC surface as well as the effect of DOM.Addi-tionally,the changes in the content of persistent free radicals in the GAC samples were insignificant following different aging processes.This work contributes to enhancing understanding regarding the UV/H_(2)O_(2)-GAC filtration scheme,and promoting the application in drinking water treatment.

Enhancement of Fenton oxidation for removing organic matter from hypersaline solution by accelerating ferric system with hydroxylamine hydrochloride and benzoquinone

Fenton oxidation is generally inhibited in the presence of a high concentration of chloride ions.This study investigated the feasibility of using benzoquinone（BQ） and hydroxylamine hydrochloride（HA） as Fenton enhancers for the removal of glycerin from saline water under ambient temperature by accelerating the ferric system.It was found that organics removal was not obviously affected by chloride ions of low concentration（less than 0.1 mol/L）,while the mineralization rate was strongly inhibited in the presence of a large amount of chloride ions.In addition,ferric hydrolysis-precipitation was significantly alleviated in the presence of HA and BQ,and HA was more effective in reducing ferric ions into ferrous ions than HA,while the H_2O_2 decomposition rate was higher in the BQ-Fenton system.Electron spin resonance analysis revealed that OH production was reduced in high salinity conditions,while it was enhanced after the addition of HA and BQ（especially HA）.This study provided a possible solution to control and alleviate the inhibitory effect of chloride ions on the Fenton process for organics removal.

Cobalt doping amount determines dominant reactive species in peroxymonosulfate activation via porous carbon catalysts co-doped by cobalt and nitrogen

Switching the reaction routes in peroxymonosulfate(PMS)-based advanced oxidation processes have attracted much attention but remain challenging.Herein,a series of Co-N/C catalysts with different compositions and structures were prepared by using bimetallic zeolitic imidazolate frameworks based on ZIF-8 and ZIF-67(x Zn/Co-ZIFs).Results show that Co doping amount could mediate the transformation of the activation pathway of PMS over CoN/C.When Co doping amount was less than 10%,the constructed x Co-N/C/PMS system(x≤10%)was singlet oxygen-dominated reaction;however further increasing Co doping amount would lead to the generation and coexistence of sulfate radicals and high-valent cobalt,besides singlet oxygen.Furthermore,the nitrogen-coordinated Co(Co-NX)sites could serve as main catalytically active sites to generate singlet oxygen.While excess Co doping amount caused the formation of Co nanoparticles from which leached Co ions were responsible for the generation of sulfate radicals and high-valent cobalt.Compared to undoped N/C,Co doping could significantly enhance the catalytic performance.The 0.5%Co-N/C could achieve the optimum degradation(0.488 min^(-1))and mineralization abilities(78.4%)of sulfamethoxazole among the investigated Co-N/C catalysts,which was superior to most of previously reported catalysts.In addition,the application prospects of the two systems in different environmental scenarios(pH,inorganic anions and natural organic matter)were assessed and showed different degradation behaviors.This study provides a strategy to regulate the reactive species in PMS-based advanced oxidation process.

Elevated levels of atmospheric CO_(2)(eCO_(2))promote rice growth and increase methane(CH_(4))emissions from rice paddies,because increased input of plant photosynthate to soil stimulates methanogenic archae.However,temporal trends in the effects of eCO_(2)on rice growth and CH_(4)emissions are still unclear.To investigate changes in the effects of eCO_(2)over time,we conducted a two-season pot experiment in a walk-in growth chamber.Positive effects of eCO_(2)on rice leaf photosynthetic rate,biomass,and grain yield were similar between growing seasons.However,the effects of eCO_(2)on CH_(4) emissions decreased over time.Elevated CO_(2)increased CH_(4)emissions by 48%-101%in the first growing season,but only by 28%-30%in the second growing season.We also identified the microbial process underlying the acclimation of CH4 emissions to atmospheric CO_(2)enrichment:eCO_(2)stimulated the abundance of methanotrophs more strongly in soils that had been previously exposed to eCO_(2)than in soils that had not been.These results emphasize the need for long-term eCO_(2)experiments for accurate predictions of terrestrial feedbacks.

DEAR EDITOR,Three new genera and 46 new species of phrurolithid spiders(Araneae,Phrurolithidae)are described from jiangxi Province,southern China.These results support our hypothesis that a large percentage of China’s species remain unknown(Li,2020).Some 250 years after Swedish biologist Carl Linnaeus devised a formal system for classifying the diversity of nature.
