An improved type of elliptical jacket polarization maintaining fiber was developed by using a modified chemical vapor deposition method with special treatment. Different from conventional elliptical jacket, the shape of the stress jacket was transmuted. The cross-section of fiber consists of 5 layers: substrate, outer cladding, stress jacket, inner cladding and core. The cross sectional component distribution was investigated by electron probe microscopy and energy dispersive spectrum. The finite element method was used to calculate the stress birefringence. Based on the analyses of the microstructure, the technological process is improved. The temperature cycling test of the fiber wound into gyroscope coils was performed. The results show that the fiber possesses superior performance at high and low temperatures compared with other fibers. The high homogeneity is achieved by well-controlled modified chemical vapor deposition process. A homogeneous length of 8 km fiber is obtained. With advantages in homogeneity and length, the fiber has great potential in applications such as fiber gyroscopes, fiber hydrophone and other optical fiber sensors.

Considering the evolution of rotation sensing and timing applications realized in micro-electro-mechanical systems(MEMS),flexural mode resonant shapes are outperformed by bulk acoustic wave(BAW)counterparts by achieving higher frequencies with both electrostatic and piezoelectric *** the 1-30 MHz range,which hosts BAW gyroscopes and timing references,piezoelectric and electrostatic MEMS have similar transduction ***,when designed intelligently,electrostatic transduction allows self-alignment between electrodes and the resonator for various BAW modes,misalignment is inevitable regarding piezoelectric transduction of BAW modes that require electrode *** this paper transverse piezoelectric actuation of[011]oriented single crystal lead magnesium niobate-lead titanate(PMN-PT)thin film disks are shown to excite the tangential mode and family of elliptical compound resonant modes,utilizing a self-aligned and unpatterned electrode that spans the entire disk *** resonant mode coupling is achieved by employing a unique property of[011]PMN-PT,where the in-plane piezoelectric coefficients have opposite *** 1-port disk transducers,RF reflection measurements are performed that demonstrate the compound mode family shapes in the 1-30 MHz *** verification of mode transduction is achieved using in-plane displacement measurements with Polytec’s laser Doppler vibrometer(LDV).While the tangential mode achieves a 40°/s dithering rate at 335 kHz resonant frequency,the n=2 wine-glass mode achieves 11.46 nm tip displacement at 8.42 MHz resonant frequency on a radius of 60μm disk resonator in air.A single electrode resonator that can excite both tangential and wine-glass modes with such metrics lays the foundation for a BAW MEMS gyroscope with a built-in primary calibration stage.

In this article, multiple receiver effects in a non-line-of-sight （NLOS） ultraviolet （UV） communication system is studied. The idea of using multiple receivers for diversity reception is known as a practical, effective and widely applied technique in wireless communications. The current approach is to use multiple antennas at the receiver in order to improve the quality of the received signal. A method of modeling and simulation is proposed to depict the principle and feasibility of the multiple receiver adopted in UV communication. The study provides an insight to the channel characteristics and achievable capabilities of ultraviolet communication systems with multiple receivers. It provides guidelines for practical system design with discussions on trade off between the receiver gain and the additional cost.

Uncooled In As Sb photoconductors were fabricated. The photoconductors were based on In As0.05Sb0.95 and In As0.09Sb0.91 thick epilayers grown on In As substrates by melt epitaxy(ME). Ge immersion lenses were set on the photoconductors. The cutoff wavelength of In As0.09Sb0.91 detectors is obviously extended to 11.5 μm, and that of In As0.05Sb0.95 detectors is 8.3 μm. At room temperature, the peak detectivity of Dλp* at wavelength of 6.8 μm and modulation frequency of 1 200 Hz is 1.08×109 cm·Hz1/2·W-1 for In As0.09Sb0.91 photoconductors, the detectivity D* at wavelength of 9 μm is 7.56×108 cm·Hz1/2·W-1, and that at 11 μm is 3.92×108 cm·Hz1/2·W-1. The detectivity of In As0.09Sb0.91 detectors at the wavelengths longer than 9 μm is about one order of magnitude higher than that of In As0.05Sb0.95 detectors, which rises from the increase of arsenic(As) composition in In As0.09Sb0.91 materials.

With the absence of on-situ temperature monitoring of optical fiber composite overhead ground wire(OPGW) for the process of sleet-thawing, early temperature warning and safety control of direct current(DC) in sleet-thawing process is difficult. Here we propose a Brillouin optical time-domain reflectometry(BOTDR) with broadband receiving for fast measurement and with distributed Raman amplification for long distance measurement of about 100 km. A field experiment for on-situ temperature monitoring of sleet-thawing of OPGW is also reported, which shows uneven change of temperature along the OPGW. The difference between the maximum and the minimum temperature change can be greater than 40 °C.

Active metasurfaces have recently attracted more attention since they can make the light manipulation be versatile and real-time. Metasurfaces-based holography possesses the advantages of high spatial resolution and enormous information capacity for applications in optical displays and encryption. In this work, a tunable polarization multiplexing holographic metasurface controlled by an external magnetic field is proposed. The elaborately designed nanoantennas are arranged on the magneto-optical intermediate layer, which is placed on the metallic reflecting layer. Since the non-diagonal elements of the dielectric tensor of the magneto-optical material become non-zero values once the external magnetic field is applied,the differential absorption for the left and right circularly polarized light can be generated. Meanwhile, the amplitude and phase can be flexibly modulated by changing the sizes of the nanoantennas. Based on this, the dynamic multichannel holographic display of metasurface in the linear and circular polarization channels is realized via magnetic control, and it can provide enhanced security for optical information storage. This work paves the way for the realization of magnetically controllable phase modulation, which is promising in dynamic wavefront control and optical information encryption.
