Remote Sensing Monitoring of Surface Characteristics in the Badain Jaran, Tengger, and Ulan Buh Deserts of China

Deserts and sandy land in northern China are very susceptible to sandy desertification and are the main source of sand-dust storms of Asian dust. However, because of the complex factors involved, descriptions of the relationship between sandy desertification and surface characteristics in these regions are lacking. We monitored the surface characteristics and their changes in time using information about soil, vegetation, and landforms in the Badain Jaran Desert(BJD), Tengger Desert(TD), and Ulan Buh Desert(UBD) in the northern China. The monitoring was done using tasseled cap angle(TCA), disturbance index(DI), and topsoil grain size index(TGSI) from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer(MODIS) images combined with a decision tree classification. Results showed that the TD had higher topsoil fine sand content, and the ratio of non-vegetated to vegetated areas was similar with that in the UBD. Northeast-southwest coarse sand dunes with thin interdune(NECTI) dominated the BD, fine sand dunes(FSD) dominated the TD, and a combination of northeast-southwest coarse sand dunes with wide interdune(NECWI) and northwest-southeast coarse sand dunes with wide interdune(NWCWI) dominated the UBD. From 2000 to 2015, in the BJD the area of the NECTI, non-sand dune(Non) and potential sand sources(PSS) increased, whereas the area of the NECWI, FSD and NWCWI decreased, indicating a improve process in the BJD. In the TD, the area covered by Non increased, whereas the area covered by PSS, NECWI, NECTI, FSD, and NWCWI decreased from 2000 to 2015. The area covered by the various surface characteristic types fluctuated annually in the UBD from 2000 to 2015. Changes in surface characteristics reflect the combined effects of natural conditions and human activity. The findings of our study will assist scientists and policy makers in proposing different management techniques to combat sandy desertification for the different surface characteristics of these regions.

Estimation of daily PM2.5 concentration and its relationship with meteorological conditions in Beijing

When investigating the impact of air pollution on health, particulate matter less than 2.5μm in aerodynamic diameter （PM2.5） is considered more harrnful than particulates of other sizes. Therefore, studies of PM2.5 have attracted more attention. Beijing, the capital of China, is notorious for its serious air pollution problem, an issue which has been of great concern to the residents, government, and related institutes for decades. However, in China, significantly less time has been devoted to observing PM2.5 than for PM10. Especially before 2013, the density of the PM2.5 ground observation network was relatively low, and the distribution of observation stations was uneven. One solution is to estimate PM2.5 concentrations from the existing data on PM10. In the present study, by analyzing the relationship between the concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10, and the meteorological conditions for each season in Beijing from 2008 to 2014, a U-shaped relationship was found between the daily maximum wind speed and the daily PM concentration, including both PM2.5 and PM10. That is, the relationship between wind speed and PM concentration is not a simple positive or negative correlation in these wind directions; their relationship has a complex effect, with higher PM at low and high wind than for moderate winds. Additionally, in contrast to previous studies, we found that the PM2.5/PM10 ratio is proportional to the mean relative humidity （MRH）. According to this relationship, for each season we established a multiple nonlinear regression （MNLR） model to estimate the PM2.5 concentrations of the missing periods.

Evaluation of Forest Damaged Area and Severity Caused by Ice-snow Frozen Disasters over Southern China with Remote Sensing

The accurate assessment of forest damage is important basis for the forest post-disaster recovery process and ecosystem management. This study evaluates the spatial distribution of damaged forest and its damaged severity caused by ice-snow disaster that occurred in southern China during January 10 to February 2 in 2008. The moderate-resolution imaging spectroradiometer(MODIS)13 Q1 products are used, which include two vegetation indices data of NDVI(Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) and EVI(Enhanced Vegetation Index). Furtherly, after Quality Screening(QS) and Savizky-Golay(S-G) filtering of MODIS 13 Q1 data, four evaluation indices are obtained, which are NDVI with QS(QSNDVI), EVI with QS(QSEVI), NDVI with S-G filtering(SGNDVI) and EVI with S-G filtering(SGEVI). The study provides a new way of firstly determining the threshold for each image pixel for damaged forest evaluation, by computing the pre-disaster reference value and change threshold with vegetation index from remote sensing data. Results show obvious improvement with the new way for forest damage evaluation, evaluation result of forest damage is much close to the field survey data with standard error of only 0.95 and 1/3 less than the result that evaluated from other threshold method. Comparatively, the QSNDVI shows better performance than other three indices on evaluating forest damages. The evaluated result with QSNDVI shows that the severe, moderate, mild damaged rates of Southern China forests are 47.33%, 34.15%, 18.52%, respectively. By analyzing the influence of topographic and meteorological factors on forest-vegetation damage, we found that the precipitation on freezing days has greater impact on forest-vegetation damage, which is regarded as the most important factor. This study could be a scientific and reliable reference for evaluating the forest damages from ice-snow frozen disasters.

Variable Coupling Strength of Silicene on Ag(lll)

We perform a scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy study on the electronic structures of √3×√3- silicene on Ag（111）. It is found that the coupling strength of √3×√3-silicene with the Ag-（111） substrate is variable in different regions, giving rise to notable effects in experiments. This evidence of decoupling or variable interaction of silicene with the substrate is helpful to in-depth understanding of the structure and clectronic properties of silieene.

Topological Phase in Non-centrosymmetric Material NaSnBi

We predict that a non-eentrosymmetric material NaSnBi locates in a three-dimensional non-trivial topological phase under ambient pressure based on first-principle calculations. By deriving the effective model around the Г point, we find that the topological phase transition is driven by a Rashba spin-orbital coupling through an odd number of pairs of band touch due to a small anisotropic gap caused by quintie dispersion terms. In contrast to conventional topological insulators, the spin texture of the surface Dirac cone is right-handed and the surface states are strikingly different for different surface terminations.

Changes in Regional Heavy Rainfall Events in China during 1961–2012

A new technique for identifying regional climate events, the Objective Identification Technique for Regional Extreme Events（OITREE）, was applied to investigate the characteristics of regional heavy rainfall events in China during the period1961–2012. In total, 373 regional heavy rainfall events（RHREs） were identified during the past 52 years. The East Asian summer monsoon（EASM） had an important influence on the annual variations of China＇s RHRE activities, with a significant relationship between the intensity of the RHREs and the intensity of the Mei-yu. Although the increase in the frequency of those RHREs was not significant, China experienced more severe and extreme regional rainfall events in the 1990 s. The middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River and the northern part of South China were the regions in the country most susceptible to extreme precipitation events. Some stations showed significant increasing trends in the southern part of the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River and the northern part of South China, while parts of North China, regions between Guangxi and Guangdong, and northern Sichuan showed decreasing trends in the accumulated intensity of *** spatial distribution of the linear trends of events＇ accumulated intensity displayed a similar so-called ＂southern flooding and northern drought＂ pattern over eastern China in recent decades.

Effect of Terraces at the Interface on the Structural and Physical Properties of La_(0.8)Sr_(0.2)MnO_3 Thin Films

Employing atomic force microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and the second harmonic generation tech- nique, we carefully explore the structural properties of 6-unit-cell-thick La0.8Sr0.2 MnO3 films grown on SrTiO3 with atomically fiat TiO2-terminated terraces on the surface. The results clearly demonstrate that the terraces on the surface of TiO2-terminated SrTiO3 can improve the layer-by-layer epitaxial growth of the manganite films, which results in uniform film coverage at the beginning of growth and thus reduces the substrate-induced disorder at or near the interface. Comparing the magnetic and transport properties of La0.8Sr0.2NlnO3 films with the thicknesses varying from 6 unit cells to 80 unit cells grown respectively on as-received SrTi03 and TiO2- terminated SrTiO3, it is found that these atomically flat terraces on the surface of TiO2-terminated SrTiO3 can greatly enhance the Curie temperature and conductivities of the ultrathin La0.8Sr0.2MnO3 films with thickness less than 50 unit cells, while no obvious difference is detected in the magnetic and transport properties of the 80 unit-cell thick films.
