Effects of plasticizer on removal of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes from agricultural soils via soil microbial fuel cells

Soil microbial fuel cells（MFCs）, a novel ecosystem technology, have recently been intensively studied for antibiotic-polluted soils. However, actual agricultural soils are always contaminated by mixed pollutants, especially plasticizers from extensively used agricultural plastic films. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate（DEHP）, a representative plasticizer in soil, on the removal of sulfadiazine（SDZ）, a frequently detected antibiotic in natural environments, and antibiotic resistance genes（ARGs） and microbial community in soil MFCs. Soil MFCs maintained a good antibiotic removal ability even under the influence of residual DEHP and achieved a higher removal performance at higher DEHP concentrations due to enhanced power generation. Specifically, a higher DEHP concentration had a favorable effect on antibiotic removal in soil MFCs, with the SDZ concentration decreased in both the upper and lower layers(from 4.867 ± 0.221 to 0.268 ± 0.021 and 0.293 ± 0.047 mg kg-1, respectively) of polluted soils. Moreover, a high DEHP concentration significantly promoted the abundance of bacteria associated with electricity generation compared with a lower DEHP concentration,resulting in the promotion of extracellular electron transfer and enhancing SDZ degradation. The increased ARG abundance may be caused by the enrichment of ARG potential hosts brought about by high DEHP concentration, likely due to the increased conjugative transfer frequencies of plasmid RP4 by decreasing cell membrane permeability and increasing reactive oxygen species content. The results revealed the ecological risk of residual DEHP in soil that promotes ARG transmission in soil MFCs, although it has the potential to reduce SDZ toxicity through horizontal gene transfer. We also highlight concerns regarding the management of antibiotics and plasticizers in soil. The negative effects of plasticizers on antibiotic removal should be carefully evaluated when using soil

Designing Membrane Electrode Assembly for Electrochemical CO_(2)Reduction:a Review

Currently, the electrochemical CO_(2) reduction reaction (CO_(2) RR) can realize the resource conversion of CO_(2) , which is a promising approach to carbon resource use. Important advancements have been made in exploring the CO_(2) RR performance and mechanism because of the rational design of electrolyzer systems, such as H-cells, flow cells, and catalysts. Considering the future development direction of this technology and large-scale application needs, membrane electrode assembly (MEA) systems can improve energy use efficiency and achieve large-scale CO_(2) conversion, which is considered the most promising technology for industrial applications. This review will concentrate on the research progress and present situation of the MEA component structure. This paper begins with the composition and construction of a gas diff usion electrode. Then, the application of ion-exchange membranes in MEA is introduced. Furthermore, the eff ects of pH and the anion and cation of the anolyte on MEA performance are explored. Additionally, we present the anode reaction type in MEA. Finally, the challenges in this field are summarized, and upcoming trends are projected. This review should offer researchers a clearer picture of MEA systems and provide important, timely, and valuable insights into rational electrolyzer design to facilitate further development of CO_(2) electrochemical reduction.

Distribution of methylsiloxanes in benthic mollusks from the Chinese Bohai Sea

Methylsiloxanes are a class of silicone compounds that have been widely used in various industrial processes and personal care products for several decades. This study investigated the spatial distribution of three cyclic methylsiloxanes(D4–D6) and twelve linear methylsiloxanes(L5–L16) in mollusks collected from seven cities along the Bohai Sea. D4–D6(df = 71%–81%) and L8–L16(df = 32%–40%) were frequently detectable in the mollusk samples, while L5–L7 were not found in any mollusk samples. Cyclic methylsiloxanes(D4–D6) were found in mollusks with the mean concentrations of 15.7 ± 12.3 ng/g ww for D4,24.6 ± 15.8 ng/g ww for D5 and 34.0 ± 23.0 ng/g ww for D6. Among the seven sampling cities, the cyclic methylsiloxanes were predominant in mollusks, with the total cyclic methylsiloxanes(sum of D4–D6, ∑ CMS) accounting for 74.2%–80.7% of the total methylsiloxanes. ∑ CMS along the coastline demonstrated a clear gradient, with the highest concentrations in mollusks at the sampling sites located in the western part of the Bohai Sea and the lowest concentrations in mollusks from cities located in the eastern part of the Bohai Sea. The biota-sediment accumulation factors for cyclic methylsiloxanes(D4–D6) and linear methylsiloxanes(L8–L16) were estimated as 0.42 ± 0.06–0.53 ± 0.06 and0.13 ± 0.03–0.19 ± 0.05, respectively.

Application of silver nanoparticles in electrically conductive adhesives with silver micro flakes

This study has been conducted to evaluate the application of silver nanoparticles(NPs)in Electrically Conductive Adhesives(ECAs),filled with hybrid silver flakes and NPs,and silver flakes as a control sample,at a filler loading of 78 wt.%,83 wt.%and 88 wt.%and cured at 150℃and 180℃,*** results show that the electrical and thermal conductivities of ECAs were improved with the increasing of filler loading and curing *** silver NPs in silver flakes negatively affected the electrical and thermal conductivities of ECAs at a low filler mass fraction of 78 wt.%,because the segregation of NPs enlarged the average distance of silver flakes;while it positively influenced the electrical and thermal conductivities of ECAs at a loading ratio of 88 wt.%,probably due to NPs filling in the gaps between silver flakes or even sintering together with each other or with silver flakes,especially when curing at high temperature of 180℃.

EXAFS Studies on Local Atomic Structure in the Amorphous Mg_(65)Cu_(25)Gd_(10) Alloy

Local atomic structures of an amorphous Mg65Cu25Gd10 alloy and the structural changes by thermal annealing have been studied by extended X-ray absorption fine structure （EXAFS）. The correlation between structural changes and mechanical properties for the Mg65Cu25Gd10 alloy has also been discussed. Results showed that Cu atoms around Gd in Mg65Cu25Gd10 lost rapidly during annealing , resulting in the segregation of Cu atoms. The coordination number NGd-Mg of Mg65Cu25Gd10 annealed at 373 K first diminished and then augmented with the increase of annealing time. The formation of polyhedral short-range order unit with coordination number of nearly 12 around Gd atoms is in favor of the improvement of mechanical properties. The chemical short-range order, not topological short-range order in the amorphous Mg65Cu25Gd10 alloy had obvious changes during annealing.

Study on the Hungarian algorithm for the maximum likelihood data association problem

A specialized Hungarian algorithm was developed here for the maximum likelihood data association problem with two implementation versions due to presence of false alarms and missed detections. The maximum likelihood data association problem is formulated as a bipartite weighted matching problem. Its duality and the optimality conditions are given. The Hungarian algorithm with its computational steps, data structure and computational complexity is presented. The two implementation versions, Hungarian forest （HF） algorithm and Hungarian tree （HT） algorithm, and their combination with the naYve auction initialization are discussed. The computational results show that HT algorithm is slightly faster than HF algorithm and they are both superior to the classic Munkres algorithm.

Urban areas are of paramount significance to both the individuals and communities at local and regional ***,the rapid growth of urban areas exerts effects on climate,biodiversity,hydrology,and natural ecosystems ***,regular and up-to-date information related to urban extent is necessary to monitor the impacts of urban areas at local,regional,and potentially global *** study presents a new urban map of Eurasia at 500 m resolution using multi-source geospatial data,including Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer(MODIS)data of 2013,population density of 2012,the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program’s Operational Linescan System(DMSP-OLS)nighttime lights of 2012,and constructed Impervious Surface Area(ISA)data of *** Eurasian urban map was created using the threshold method for these data,combined with references of fine resolution Landsat and Google Earth *** resultant map was compared with nine global urban maps and was validated using random sampling *** of the accuracy assessment showed high overall accuracy of the new urban map of 94%.This urban map is one product of the 20 land cover classes of the next version of Global Land Cover by National Mapping Organizations.

Cobalt-based multicomponent nanoparticles supported on N-doped graphene as advanced cathodic catalyst for zinc-air batteries

To improve the efficiency of cathodic oxygen reduction reaction(ORR)in zinc-air batteries(ZABs),an adsorption-complexation-calcination method was proposed to generate cobalt-based multicomponent nanoparticles comprising Co,Co_(3)O_(4)and CoN,as well as numerous N heteroatoms,on graphene nanosheets(Co/Co_(3)O_(4)/CoN/NG).The Co/Co_(3)O_(4)/CoN nanoparticles with the size of less than 50 nm are homogeneously dispersed on N-doped graphene(NG)substrate,which greatly improve the catalytic behaviors for *** results show that the half-wave potential is as high as 0.80 V *** and the limiting current density is 4.60 mA·cm^(−2),which are close to those of commercially available platinum/carbon(Pt/C)*** as cathodic catalyst for ZABs,the battery shows large specific capacity and open circuit voltage of 843.0 mAh∙g^(−1) and 1.41 V,*** excellent performance is attributed to the efficient two-dimensional structure with high accessible surface area and the numerous multiple active sites provided by highly scattered Co/Co_(3)O_(4)/CoN particles and doped nitrogen on the carbon matrix.

Drinking water treatment using a submerged internal-circulation membrane coagulation reactor coupled with permanganate oxidation

A submerged internal circulating membrane coagulation reactor （MCR） was used to treat surface water to produce drinking water. Polyaluminum chloride （PAC1） was used as coagulant, and a hydrophilic polyvinylidene fluoride （PVDF） submerged hollow fiber microfiltration membrane was employed. The influences of trans-membrane pressure （TMP）, zeta potential （ZP） of the suspended particles in raw water, and KMnO4 dosing on water flux and the removal of turbidity and organic matter were systematically investigated. Continuous bench-scale experiments showed that the permeate quality of the MCR satisfied the requirement for a centralized water supply, according to the Standards for Drinking Water Quality of China （GB B749-2006）, as evaluated by turbidity （〈1 NTU） and total organic carbon （TOC）（〈5 mE/L） measurements. Besides water flux, the removal of turbidity, TOC and dissolved organic carbon （DOC） in the raw water also increased with increasing TMP in the range of 0.01-0.05 MPa. High ZP induced by PAC1, such as 5-9 mY, led to an increase in the number of fine and total particles in the MCR, and consequently caused serious membrane fouling and high permeate turbidity. However, the removal of TOC and DOC increased with increasing ZP. A slightly positive ZP, such as 1-2 mV, corresponding to charge neutralization coagulation, was favorable for membrane fouling control. Moreover, dosing with KMnO4 could further improve the removal of turbidity and DOC, thereby mitigating membrane fouling. The results are helpful for the application of the MCR in producing drinking water and also beneficial to the research and application of other coagulation and membrane separation hybrid processes.

Variation of temporal and spatial patterns of NO_2 in Beijing using OMI and mobile DOAS

Control policies such as "odd-and-even license plate rule" were implemented by the Chinese government to restrict traffic and suspend factory production in Beijing and neighboring cities during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit. We use ozone monitoring instrument(OMI), mobile differential optical absorption spectroscopy(DOAS), and multi-axis differential optical absorption spectroscopy(MAX-DOAS) to measure the variation of the spatial and temporal patterns of NO2 column densities from October 24, 2014 to November 22, 2014. It is found that the NO2 column densities during the episode of control policies are significantly lower than those during other periods, and the emission flux of NO2 calculated by mobile DOAS is also lower than the results from other periods. Some daily low NO2 column densities occur with the northwest wind direction. We then compare the relationship between OMI and mobile DOAS NO2 column density observations, and the results of mobile DOAS are approximately 2.7 times larger than the OMI values. The largest discrepancy occurs in the northern part of Beijing city. In other parts, the two instruments have a better correlation coefficient(R2) of 0.61. The low NO2 column densities that occur during the episode of control policies are affected by the control policies as well as meteorological conditions.
