Immediate effects of Tuina techniques on working-related musculoskeletal disorder of professional orchestra musicians

BACKGROUND：Musicians are a prone group to suffer from working-related musculoskeletal disorder（WRMD）.Conventional solutions to control musculoskeletal pain include pharmacological treatment and rehabilitation programs but their effi ciency is sometimes disappointing.OBJECTIVE：The aim of this research is to study the immediate effects of Tuina techniques on WRMD of professional orchestra musicians from the north of Portugal.DESIGN,SETTING,PARTICIPANTS AND INTERVENTIONS：We performed a prospective,controlled,single-blinded,randomized study.Professional orchestra musicians with a diagnosis of WRMD were randomly distributed into the experimental group（n=39）and the control group（n=30）.During an individual interview,Chinese diagnosis took place and treatment points were chosen.Real acupoints were treated by Tuina techniques into the experimental group and non-specifi c skin points were treated into the control group.Pain was measured by verbal numerical scale before and immediately after intervention.RESULTS：After one treatment session,pain was reduced in 91.8%of the cases for the experimental group and 7.9%for the control group.CONCLUSION：Although results showed that Tuina techniques are effectively reducing WRMD in professional orchestra musicians of the north of Portugal,further investigations with stronger measurements,double-blinding designs and bigger simple sizes are needed.

Cancer drug resistance is one of the main barriers to overcome to ensure durable treatment responses.While many pivotal advances have been made in first combination therapies,then targeted therapies,and now broadening out to immunomodulatory drugs or metabolic targeting compounds,drug resistance is still ultimately universally fatal.In this brief review,we will discuss different strategies that have been used to fight drug resistance from synthetic lethality to tumor microenvironment modulation,focusing on the DNA damage response and tumor metabolism both within tumor cells and their surrounding microenvironment.In this way,with a better understanding of both targetable mutations in combination with the metabolism,smarter drugs may be designed to combat cancer drug resistance.

Generic Method for Merging Satellite and Historical Ground Station Data to Design Rainfall Intensity Duration Frequency (IDF) Curves in Recordless Sub-Saharian Countries

The availability of long-term rainfall records is essential to conduct a serious frequency analysis in order to estimate the effective precipitation depth. The development of the process of elaboration of IDF (Intensity-Duration-Frequency) curves for a given location requires very precise data, at least with daily frequency, obtained through the use of rainfall records. The present study presents a method used to merge historical precipitation data with the latest data collected by satellite in order to perform graphs with IDF curves in places where rainfall records are scarce. The homogeneity of the data used is analyzed in order to guarantee its statistical utility and the frequency analysis was performed with the statistical distributions of Extreme Values Type I (Gumbel), Gamma, Pearson Type III and finally with Log-Pearson Type III, in order to verify which one of them applies better to the sites chosen for this analysis: the cities of Benguela and Lobito in the south of Angola. Daily rainfall data from the TRMM mission and historical daily data were used to derive the relationships between the maximum daily precipitation and the sub-daily precipitation values. From the observed daily data, techniques of disaggregation of the collected data were used, in order to generate a synthetic precipitation sequence with the extreme values in periods of time inferior to the daily one, with statistical properties similar to the registered data. Then IDF equations are established, with which the occasional storm depth is calculated for various return periods and various durations and, after them, the IDF curves are drawn for these two geographic stations.

Thermo-Mechanical Properties Study of Stabilized Soil Bricks to Sugar Cane Molasses and Cassava Starch Binders

The current study deals Swith thermo-mechanical properties of stabilized soil small bricks with the help of organic binders of sugar cane molasses and cassava starch. Different formulations of soil concrete have been suggested after the geotechnical characterization of samples of soil was taken. From these, it arises that the studied soil is the most plastically clay (of type A3) according to GTR classification. Samples made of small bricks and measured out at 4%, 6% and 8% of binders (molasses, starch or molasses + starch) have been warmed up to different temperatures (100°C, 150°C, 200°C and 250°C) for the rising of the thermic behavior under different conditions and submitted to crushing testings for the estimation of characteristic resistances to the compression. According to the mechanical behavior, we note an improvement of resistances for small bricks measured 4%, 6% and 8%, of molasses respectively of 32.44%, 32.06% and 23.43% against the value of reference for small bricks without molasses. In the same way, the binder (molasses + starch) also reveals an improvement of resistance to the compression of 13.27%, 26.17% and 26.17%. On the contrary, the stabilization with the starch binder did not bring a significative improvement. According to the thermic influence, the heating at 100°C of stabilized small bricks at 4%, 6% and 8% of molasses, reveals a significative improvement of resistances. Moreover, the stabilization with the starch reveals on the contrary a good behavior for heatings at 150°C and 250°C. In short, for the binder (molasses + starch), it is the heating at 200°C that shows some improvements of remarkable resistances. Different analyses of realized statistics also show the effectivity of obtained results. For all realized formulations, the measuring out at 6% of binders (molasses, or molasses + starch) seems as optimal in front of the best thermo-mechanical revealed properties.

This paper brings the comparison of performances of CO_(2)conversion by plasma and plasma-assisted catalysis based on the data collected from literature in this field,organised in an open access online database.This tool is open to all users to carry out their own analyses,but also to contributors who wish to add their data to the database in order to improve the relevance of the comparisons made,and ultimately to improve the efficiency of CO_(2)conversion by plasma-catalysis.The creation of this database and database user interface is motivated by the fact that plasma-catalysis is a fast-growing field for all CO_(2)conversion processes,be it methanation,dry reforming of methane,methanolisation,or others.As a result of this rapid increase,there is a need for a set of standard procedures to rigorously compare performances of different systems.However,this is currently not possible because the fundamental mechanisms of plasma-catalysis are still too poorly understood to define these standard procedures.Fortunately however,the accumulated data within the CO_(2)plasma-catalysis community has become large enough to warrant so-called“big data”studies more familiar in the fields of medicine and the social sciences.To enable comparisons between multiple data sets and make future research more effective,this work proposes the first database on CO_(2)conversion performances by plasma-catalysis open to the whole community.This database has been initiated in the framework of a H_(2)0_(2)0 European project and is called the“PIONEER Data Base”.The database gathers a large amount of CO_(2)conversion performance data such as conversion rate,energy efficiency,and selectivity for numerous plasma sources coupled with or without a catalyst.Each data set is associated with metadata describing the gas mixture,the plasma source,the nature of the catalyst,and the form of coupling with the plasma.Beyond the database itself,a data extraction tool with direct visualisation features or advanced filtering functionalities has been developed a

Effects of Extracurricular Physical Activity on the Physical Fitness Levels of Youngsters in school Environments

Extracurricular physical activity(EPA)complements the recommendations of daily physical activity and directly influences children’s physical fitness.The main objective of this study was to understand the effect of EPA practice on students’physical fitness.It is a sample of 51 students of the fifth year schooling(62.7%girls and 37.3%boys)with an average of 10.2 years of age.It is an observational study,with two groups,one of non-participation in EPA=17 and the other of participation in EPA=34.Data collection was performed at a public school in the Lisbon area through the Fitnessgram Test Battery and a validated questionnaire for research purposes in order to understand the sociodemographic variables and practice of EPA.The cardiorespiratory variables,BMI and muscular strength were evaluated through specific tests of each physical capacity.The data were collected at the beginning and end of the school year.Between the two moments there were significant differences in all variables,assuming a non-significant value for the right inferior flexibility p=0.149.There was improvement in all variables except the BMI,which showed an increase at the end of the year,with a mean magnitude,ES=0.49.

Terminalia mantaly H. Perrier is one of the plants of the Combretaceae family that is widely used in traditional African medicine for its antibacterial, antifungal, and especially in the treatment of malaria. In this study, we evaluated the effect of the hydroalcoholic extract of Terminalia mantaly (HAETM) on the tissue and kidney biochemical markers of rats. Forty (40) rats were randomly divided into 4 groups, assigning 10 animals within each group (5 males and 5 females per group). Animals in group 1 received distilled water and were used as the control group;on the other hand, groups 2, 3, 4 received by gavage a volume of the extract corresponding to 1 ml/100g body weight at 150 mg/kg, 300 mg/kg, 600 mg/kg, respectively. The hydroalcoholic extract was administered at the same time daily for 28 days, and blood was collected once a week to evaluate renal biochemical parameters;the kidney tissues were used to perform the histopathological study. The creatinine rate increased significantly (p Terminalia mantaly should be globally well tolerated by the body when used in doses ranging from 150 to 600 mg/kg of the body weight in animals (for this study, rats). However, further in-depth studies would be needed to get a more thorough and complete picture of the safety profile of the extract.

Prevalence and Risk Factors of Cardiovascular Diseases in the Congo-Brazzaville Pygmies

Objective: To evaluate the prevalence and determinants of overall cardiovascular risk among the pygmies of Congo Brazzaville. Methods: Cross-analysis of anthropometric data, clinical and laboratory 273 indigenous subjects including 54 patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD) and 183 without CVD, aged 29 to 69 years. The cardiovascular risk stratification table WHO/ISH 2003 was used to assess overall cardiovascular risk level. Multiple logistic regression was used to assess the independent determinants of cardiovascular risk using the global left ventricular hypertrophy as a marker. Results: Fifty-four subjects had cardiovascular disease (CVD), including 31 women (36.7%). They were aged 51.9 ± 12.4 years (p < 0.05) and showed a high blood pressure in short-long (100 ± 77 vs 32 ± 48 months;p < 0.001). It was also found a pulse pressure, PPO (58 ± 8 vs 51 ± 4 mmHg). In multivariate analysis, HDL-C levels, fasting glucose, age greater than 50 years and the higher parity or equalizes to 5 among women have emerged as key determinants of CVD risk. Conclusion: Whatever the stage, arterial hypertension in this study is associated at the risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) high at the Pygmies of Congo, emphasizing the need for a more aggressive follow-up strategy.

Rapid increase in numbers and change of land-use in two expanding Columbidae species(Columba palumbus and Streptopelia decaocto)in Algeria

Background: Investigating population ecology of urban bird species,particularly the invasive and expending spe?cies,is the key for the success of urban management and planning strategies.Methods: Populations of two Columbidae species,the Woodpigeon(Columba palumbus) and the Eurasian Collared Dove(Streptopelia decaocto),were monitored from 1992 to 2010 in the Algiers Sahel,the Mitidja Plain and surround?ing areas(Northern Algeria).Monitoring of species densities was performed by the mapping?plot method.The foraging flight routes of Woodpigeon and the distribution of Eurasian Collared Dove were assessed by systematic observations.Results: The number of counted birds was statistically constant at first years of the survey,and then increased sig?nificantly,beginning from low numbers,their densities accelerated sharply between 2001 and 2006,then reached to an equilibrium state.The significant increase in Woodpigeon's population could be explained by the reduced hunt?ing pressure and by species adaptation to new food resources provided by nearby agriculture.Indeed,monitoring of flight directions of the species revealed the use of agricultural landscapes and habitats,which is a good indicator explaining adaptation and trophic niche of the species.The occurrence of the Eurasian Collared Dove in Algiers began in 2000.Its density experienced a rapid increase with similar trend pattern as that of Woodpigeon.Its distributional range is confined mainly in suburban environments of the Mitidja Plain.Conclusion: The modifications of habitats,urbanization increase and the lessening of hunting in the Mitidja Plain facilitated the rapid expansion of the Eurasian Collared Dove and Woodpigeon as well contributed to the increase in their numbers over time.

In N’Djamena city,majority of population living there is connected to drinking water supply network.However,given untimely water cuts,some schools have chosen to carry out private drilling.Our objective is therefore to assess the quality of water intended for human consumption in these schools,to do this we have carried out a physico-chemical and bacteriological control on a number of water points.Seventeen(17)water points were collected during July 2015 and the physico-chemical parameters analyzed are as follows:pH,EC(Electrical Conductivity),TH(Total Hardness),turbidity,Ca^(2+),Mg^(2+),K^(+),Na^(+),Cl^(-),NO_(3)^(-),HCO_(3)^(-)and SO_(4)^(2-).In addition to this,we looked for possible undesirable germs,indicators of pollution.The results of physico-chemical analyses carried out show that water from most boreholes has good quality with the exception of drilling F7,which has a high conductivity,and drilling F_(3)whose turbidity is also high.Bacteriological analysis shows that all water points contain total germs,the other germs of faecal origin are mainly present in the F9 borehole.
