Isolated liver metastasis detected 11 years after the curative resection of rectal cancer:A case report

BACKGROUND The duration of surveillance after curative resection of colorectal cancer(CRC)is generally 5 *** overall incidence of recurrence more than 5 years after surgery for CRC in Japan has been reported to be 0.6%.Moreover,it is rare for CRC to have metachronous liver metastasis more than 10 years after ***,we present a case of liver metastasis detected 11 years after the curative resection of rectal *** SUMMARY A 72-year-old man was referred to our hospital after a liver tumor was detected by abdominal ultrasonography at another *** had undergone surgery for rectal cancer 11 years ***-enhanced computed tomography(CT)showed a tumor with a diameter of approximately 8 cm in the posterior segment,which was weakly and gradually enhanced.18F-fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography/CT showed an abnormally high uptake on the tumorous lesion,which showed that the tumor appeared to spread convexly along the intrahepatic bile *** cholangiocarcinoma was therefore diagnosed,and he had an extended right posterior sectionectomy and regional lymph node *** examination showed that the tumor was a moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma and showed the same pathological characteristics as the rectal *** examination showed that the cancer cells of both the liver tumor and rectal cancer were positive for cytokeratin(CK)20 and weakly positive for CK *** findings were consistent with the liver metastasis from the rectal *** It is possible that a liver tumor is metastatic in a patient with a previous history of CRC,even if it was more than 10 years earlier.

Multi-view dynamic three-dimensional reconstruction has typically required the use of custom shutter-synchronized camera rigs in order to capture scenes containing rapid movements or complex topology changes. In this paper, we demonstrate that multiple unsynchronized low-cost RGB-D cameras can be used for the same purpose. To alleviate issues caused by unsynchronized shutters, we propose a novel depth frame interpolation technique that allows synchronized data capture from highly dynamic 3 D scenes. To manage the resulting huge number of input depth images, we also introduce an efficient moving least squares-based volumetric reconstruction method that generates triangle meshes of the scene. Our approach does not store the reconstruction volume in memory,making it memory-efficient and scalable to large *** implementation is completely GPU based and works in real time. The results shown herein, obtained with real data, demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method and its advantages compared to stateof-the-art approaches.

Gender differences of low-dose aspirin-associated gastroduodenal ulcer in japanese patients

AIM:To clarify the gender differences about the clini-cal features and risk factors of low-dose aspirin (LDA) (81-100 mg daily)-associated peptic ulcer in japanese ***: There were 453 patients under treatment with LDA (298 males, 155 females) who underwent esophagogastroduodenoscopy at the department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology of Hiratsuka City Hospital between January 2003 and December 2007. They had kept taking the LDA or started treatmentduring the study period and kept taking LDA during the whole period of observation. Of these, 119 patients (87 males, 32 females) were diagnosed as having LDA-associated peptic ulcer. We examined the clinical factors associated with LDA-associated peptic ulcer in both ***: A history of peptic ulcer was found to be the risk factor for LDA-associated peptic ulcer common to both sexes. In female patients, age greater than 70 years (prevalence ORs 8.441, 95% CI: 1.797-33.649, P = 0.0069) was found to be another significant risk fac-tor, and the time to diagnosis as having LDA-associat-ed peptic ulcer by endoscopy was significantly shorter than that in the male patients (P = 0.0050). CONCLUSION: We demonstrated gender differences about the clinical features and risk factors of LDA-asso-ciated peptic ulcer. Special attention should be paid to aged female patients taking LDA.

Role of surgical resection for non-colorectal non-neuroendocrine liver metastases

It is widely accepted that the indications for hepatectomy in colorectal cancer liver metastases and liver metastases of neuro-endocrine tumors result in relatively better prognoses, whereas, the indications and prognoses of hepatectomy for non-colorectal non-neuroendocrine liver metastases(NCNNLM) remain controversial owing to the limited number of cases and the heterogeneity of the primary diseases. There have been many publications on NCNNLM; however, its background heterogeneity makes it difficult to reach a specific conclusion. This heterogeneous disease group should be discussed in the order from its general to specific aspect. The present review paper describes the general prognosis and risk factors associated with NCNNLM while specifically focusing on the liver metastases of each primary disease. A multidisciplinary approach that takes into consideration appropriate timing for hepatectomy combined with chemotherapy may prolong survival and/or contribute to the improvement of the quality of life while giving respite from systemic chemotherapy.

Immune reactions and nerve repair in mice with sciatic nerve injury 14 days after intraperitoneal injection of Brazil

BALB/c mice were intraperitoneally injected with 10, 5 or 2.5 mg/kg Brazil for 14 days after sciatic nerve injury. Results demonstrate that the spleen T/B lymphocyte stimulation index and serum circulating immune complex concentration were significantly reduced, and the morphology of the soleus muscle was restored in mice with sciatic nerve injury. These effects of Brazil were dose-dependent. Our experimental findings indicate that Brazil can regulate immune responses after nerve injury and promote sciatic nerve repair.
