Inverse correlation between reactive oxygen species in unwashed semen and sperm motion parameters as measured by a computer-assisted semen analyzer

This study investigated the correlation between sperm motion parameters obtained by a computer-assisted semen analyzer and levels of reactive oxygen species in unwashed semen. In total, 847 patients, except for azoospermic patients were investigated. At the time of each patient＇s first consultation, semen parameters were measured using SMASTM or CellSoft 3000TM, and production of reactive oxygen species was measured using a computer-driven LKB Wallac Luminometer 1251 Analyzer. The patients were divided into two groups： reactive oxygen species - positive and negative. The semen parameters within each group were measured using one of the two computer-assisted semen analyzer systems and then compared. Correlations between reactive oxygen species levels and sperm motion parameters in semen from the reactive oxygen species - positive group were also investigated. Reactive oxygen species were detected in semen samples of 282 cases （33.3%）. Sperm concentration （P 〈 0.01; P 〈 0.01）, motility （P 〈 0.01; P 〈 0.05）, and progressive motility （P 〈 0.01; P 〈 0.01） were markedly lower in the reactive oxygen species - positive group than in the reactive oxygen species - negative group. Among the sperm motion parameters in the reactive oxygen species - positive group, sperm concentration （P 〈 0.01; P 〈 0.01）, motility （P 〈 0.05; P 〈 0.01）, mALH （P 〈 0.05; P 〈 0.01）, and progressive motility （P 〈 0.05; P 〈 0.01） also showed inverse correlations with the logarithmic transformed reactive oxygen species levels. Therefore, this study demonstrated that excessive reactive oxygen species in semen damage sperm concentration, motility, and other sperm motion parameters.

Preliminary Study to Identify Criterion for Quench Crack Prevention by Computer Simulation

A criterion for preventing quench cracks has not been established although much research has been conducted in this field. A few predictions of cracking have been recently reported using simulated results of heat treatment processes. However, these results were insufficient to predict crack generation clearly because the mechanism relates not only to stress distributions in the parts but also to material characteristics. Systematic studies by the combination of experiment and simulation are therefore required to reliably identify a criterion for crack prevention by computer simulation. As a preliminary work before starting the full-scale research, a review of quench cracking research was conducted and existing test methods were classified. Several test results for cylindrical specimens were simulated for considering a cause of the crack generation. Lastly a tentative plan was made for the future research.

Determination of Lignans in Schisandra sphenanthera and Schisandra chinensis Using Ionic Liquid-based Ultrasonic-assisted Extraction and High-performance Liquid Chromatography

A green, rapid and precise sample pretreatment technique, IL-based UAE（ionic liquid-based ultrasonic- assisted extraction）, was coupled with high-performance liquid chromatographic separation to identify the main effective components in Schisandra sphenanthera（S, sphenanthera） and Schisandra chinensis（S, ehinensis） including schisantherin A, schisandrin A, and deoxyschizandrin. Four different types of ionic liquids have been investigated, finally [C6MIM][BF4] was used as the extraction solvent. A powder form of S. sphenanthera and S. chinensis was mixed with the [C6MIM][BF4] to produce a suspension. This suspension was ultrasonically extracted in a water bath at room temperature. Several of the process parameters were optimized, including the type of ionic liquid used and its volume, the sample amount, the size of the sample particle, the extraction time, etc. HPLC calibration curves were estab-lished for all the analytes and proved to be linear（r〉0.9999）. The lowest detection level for schisandrin A was 0.12μg/mL, for schisantherin A was 0.08 μg/mL, and for deoxyschizandfin was 0.10μg/mL. The recoveries of the target compounds were from 74.19% to 109.33%. The standard deviations for detection were generally no more than 6.31%. In contrast to conventional extraction methods, the IL-based UAE did not involve volatile organic volatile solvents, and the analysis time, required sample and solvent vohtrnes were also lower than those of the conventional techniques.

Female mice exhibit both sexual and social partner preferences for vocalizing males

Acoustic signals are widely used as courtship signals in the animal *** has long been known that male mice emit ultrasonic vocalizations(USVs)in the presence of female mice or in response to female *** observation led to the hypothesis that male USVs play a role in courtship *** previous studies showed that female mice have a social partner preference for vocalizing males,it is not known if they exhibit a sexual partner preference when given a *** address this issue,we examined the copulatory behaviors of female mice with either devocalized males(with or without the playback of the USVs)or sham-operated males in 2 different behavioral paradigms:the no-choice paradigm in the home cage of a male mouse(without choice of mating partners)or the mate-choice paradigm in a 3-chambered apparatus(with choice of mating partners).In the no-choice paradigm,female mice exhibited comparable sexual receptivity with sham-operated and devocalized *** addition,we found that female mice showed more approach behavior to-wards devocalized males when male USVs were played *** the mate-choice paradigm,female mice visited more frequently and stayed longer with sham-operated than devocalized ***,we showed that female mice received more intromissions from sham-operated males than devocalized *** summary,our results suggested that,although female mice can copulate equally with both devocalized and vocalizing males when given no choice of mating partner,female mice exhibit both sexual and social partner preferences for vocalizing males in the mate-choice paradigm.

Cancer statistics in Chinese older people,2022:current burden,time trends,and comparisons with the US,japan,and the Republic of Korea

Largely due to population ageing,the cancer burden from older people has been rising,which imposed considerable pressure on current Chinese healthcare *** provide comprehensive information about cancer burden of Chinese older people based on the most recent data from National Central Cancer Registry of *** logarithmic linear regression was used to project the current cancer burden in 2022,and Joinpoint regression was used for temporal trend analysis from 2000 to *** also estimated cancer statistics of older people in the US,japan and the Republic of Korea for *** is estimated that 2.79 million cases and 1.94 million deaths occur for Chinese older people,representing 55.8%and 68.2%of cases and deaths in all population in *** overall cancer incidence rate gradually increased among older women,while the mortality rates declined for both ***,approximately 10.0%of all cases and 17.7%of all deaths are from people aged over 80 years,and cancer incidence and mortality in this age group showed upward trends for *** cancer and digestive cancers are the leading cancer types for Chinese older *** with other countries,China has lower incidence rates but higher mortality rates for older *** rapidly growing burden of prostate cancer,breast cancer,colorectal cancer,and declines in esophageal cancer,stomach cancer,and liver cancer among older people indicate the cancer pattern in China is being in a transition stage to that in developed *** findings imply that it should be the national health priority to meet the growing demands for cancer diagnosis,treatment and care services from the older people as the rapid population ageing in next few decades.

Sustainable Campus Initiative at Keio University after the Great East japan Earthquake Disaster

After the shock of the Great East japan Earthquake on 11 March 2011, the issue of local sustainability is presently center stage in the japanese political process, and educational and research values are imperative for long-term cost savings, risk management, and clean, efficient energy generation. This study illustrates the Sustainable Campus Initiative approach at Keio University that students have been undertaking to make the campus more sustainable and resilient during post-disaster restoration. To unveil innovative recovery concepts, processes, and social challenges, several outcomes that maximize energy efficiency and conservation opportunities are discussed. The results indicate that the Sustainable Campus Initiative contributed to energy relief in the summer of 2011. It made campus life more creative during a period when the 15 percent mandatory power-saving order by the government to big clients of Tokyo and Tohoku Electric was established. Pilot experiments provide a useful example of how the communications media have an extraordinary ability to increase public understanding of social issues. Since the March 11 disaster, power shortages have redirected renewed attention to fossil fuels. As large energy consumers, universities have an increased responsibility to demonstrate their commitment to sustainable design and encourage innovative development concepts in their regions in the future.

Experimental study on the free surface deformation in the oxide melt

Experiments on the thermocapillary convection of high temperature Bi12SiO20 melts have been carried out in the in situ observation system. The steady flow pattern comprises of the main trunk and branches, which is deemed as the surface deformation. The oscillatory thermocapillary convection is characterized by the oscillatory main trunk and traveling branches. The transition of the melt from steady spatial to oscillatory behavior under the temperature differences 120, 60 and 10 K has been considered. The free surface deformation is observed to transform with the change of the applied temperature difference, which manifests that the thermocapillary convection is sensitive to the temperature difference. Moreover, taking the temperature distribution into account, it is noted that the deformation is formed in the colder area of the melt. The oscillatory frequency of the main trunk, which is also sensitive to the applied temperature difference, increases with the rise of temperature.

Gemcitabine is a cytidine analogue frequently used in the treatment of various ***,the development of chemoresistance limits its *** resistance is regulated by various factors,including aberrant genetic and epigenetic controls,metabolism of gemcitabine,the microenvironment,epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition,and acquisition of cancer stem cell *** many situations,results using cell lines offer valuable lessons leading to the first steps of important *** this review,we mainly discuss the factors involved in gemcitabine metabolism in association with chemoresistance,including nucleoside transporters,deoxycytidine kinase,cytidine deaminase,and ATP-binding cassette transporters,and outline new perspectives for enhancing the efficacy of gemcitabine to overcome acquired chemoresistance.
