Mapping the urban natural ventilation potential by hydrological simulation

Urban wind environments are closely related to air pollution and outdoor human *** urban natural ventilation potential(NVP)is an important factor in urban planning and ***,for ventilation studies on urban scales,neither macroscale numerical simulations(i.e.,WRF,MM5,etc.)nor microscale computational fluid dynamics(CFD)simulations can conduct efficient *** on the similarity between water flows and airflows,an efficient approach is proposed in this paper to map the urban *** integrating the urban terrain model,urban form model,and prevailing wind pressure model,an airflow digital elevation model(AF-DEM),which represents the resistance to airflow and can be used for a hydrological simulation,is generated and applied to evaluate the urban airflow patterns under different terrain,urban form and ambient wind *** objective was to develop a simulation platform that can efficiently predict the distribution of natural ventilation corridor and *** stream network calculated through the simulation is regarded as potential ventilation corridors within the city,and an index calculated from the coverage rate of wind corridors(CRW)is proposed for evaluating the relative *** Nanjing as a case study,8 AF-DEMs based on different wind directions and wind speed conditions are generated,and their corresponding ventilation corridor maps are *** results are in good agreement with the empirical evidence,indicating that the hydrological model,though a rudimentary approximation of the actual airflows,was effective in revealing the natural ventilation corridor and characterize the relative ***,the implementation of this novel method is simple and convenient,and it has great application potential and value in urban design and management.

Effects of urban square entry layouts on spatial ventilation under different surrounding building conditions

Effective urban square ventilation is important for the living comfort and health of *** research aims to establish some principles of street entry layouts for urban square ventilation *** computational fluid dynamics(CFD)simulation techniques,two types of street entry squares(two-intersection and four-intersection)were investigated under the effect of surrounding *** indices—the spatial mean velocity(),air change rate(ACH)and mean flow rates()through the street entry and square roof—were calculated to quantify the square ventilation *** simulation results indicate that the surrounding buildings could influence the square space *** the surrounding building conditions change to a building coverage ratio of 0.25,theentering through the street entry can be reduced by 35%,and thewithin the square decreases by more than 45%.The optimal street entry layout design depends greatly on the wind *** the wind direction is perpendicular to the square street entry,the corner oblique-entry layout square shows a better ventilation performance than the other *** the wind direction is oblique to the square street entry,thedeclines greatly(up to 68%),and the lateral-entry layout design shows the best ventilation performance.

In the China merchants property 2013 green architectural design competition,feature of this awardwinning program is the design method based on the principles of passive priority and comprehensive utilization of full life cycle. The passive priority can be achieved by building form derived from the simulation and analysis of wind environment,improvement of the building envelope insulation and the dehumidification of fresh air,the use of solar energy. The full life cycle utilization can be accomplished by the combination of exhibition and residents' leisure activities, and the integration with local cultural tradition, thereby improving energy efficiency and the utilization of the building.

In this paper, we reconsider the defining but often overlooked ‘hinge' function of megalopolises by analyzing how megalopolises have articulated national and international urban systems in the context of a globalizing knowledge economy. Taking the case of China's Yangtze River Delta(YRD) region, we particularly focus on knowledge circulation within and beyond the YRD region by analyzing the pattern and process of knowledge collaboration at different geographical scales during the 2004–2014 period. Results show that the structure of scientific knowledge collaboration as reflected by co-publications has been strongest at the national scale whereas that of technological knowledge collaboration as measured by co-patents has been strongest at the global scale. Despite this difference, the structure of both scientific and technological knowledge collaboration has been functionally polycentric at the megalopolitan scale but become less so at the national and global scales. The ‘globally connected but locally disconnected' pattern of Shanghai's external knowledge collaboration suggests that the gateway role of the YRD megalopolis in promoting knowledge collaboration at different geographical scales will take time before it is fully realized.

A good skylight environment in urban residential areas is an important component of a healthy city,and has always been highly *** the rapid development of new-type urbanization,the density of buildings continues to increase,and megacities have entered the stage of stock *** effective method for evaluating the skylight environment of large-scale urban residential areas is urgently ***,there is still a lack of empirical research methods and cases of large-scale residential skylight *** this regard,this article takes the megacity Beijing as the research object,and proposes an efficient analysis method of residential skylight environment that integrates multiple real-world data at city *** terms of data,it collects and integrates 3D data of urban-scale building space and residential boundary data;in terms of algorithm,Sky View Factor(SVF)is used as the evaluation index of residential skylight environment,and an efficient analysis method of urban-scale skylight environment based on cloud parallel simulation is *** analysis,it is found that:(1)the average SVF value of Beijing residential area is 61%,which means that its skylight quality is in general level;(2)the skylight environment of Beijing residential area is distributed in a circle,and there are 4 types of skylight environment quality residential areas;(3)The skylight environment of Beijing residential area is relatively weakly related to the distance from the residential area to the city center and the average height of the residential buildings,and is closely related to the plot volume ratio,the residential building density and the shading from surrounding *** highlight of this study lies in the empirical research on the skylight environment of mega-city residential areas that incorporates multiple real data for the first time,which can promote the study of skylight environment on a city scale and provide a reference for the updating of Beijin

Indoor distribution and personal exposure of cooking-generated PM2.5 in rural residences of China:A multizone model study

The fine particulate matter(PM2.5)emitted during cooking is a significant contributor to household air pollution in rural China,resulting in millions of premature deaths *** cooking is an internal pollution source,the indoor concentration of cooking-generated PM2.5 can vary among different rooms in multizone rural *** study provides a comprehensive understanding of indoor PM2.5 from cooking in rural residences by utilizing on-site investigations to gather information on cooking behavior and dwelling layout in three Chinese villages,and subsequently simulating indoor spatiotemporal concentrations of cooking-generated PM2.5 using a multizone *** findings indicate that the type of zone significantly influences the zonal concentration of PM2.5,with the highest concentrations found in kitchens(i.e.,13.9 to 188.0μg/m3)and lowest in non-adjacent zones to the kitchen(i.e.,0.01 to 7.5μg/m3)among all the modeled *** importantly,the study also assesses the resulting personal exposures for occupants with different time-spent patterns,revealing that the main cook at home and preferring to stay in the adjacent rooms to the kitchen are at the highest risk for personal *** highest personal exposure levels of cooking-generated PM2.5 are 28.5±30.1μg/m3,which is 34 times that of occupants who stay away from the *** study provides a deeper scientific insight into the indoor spatial distribution and personal exposure to cooking-generated PM2.5 in rural residences,which is crucial for developing effective interventions to mitigate the detrimental health impacts of household air pollution in rural areas.

As the leading urban agglomeration in China,the Yangtze River Delta(YRD)is experiencing a factor-driven to innovationdriven ***,the dynamics of regional innovation growth are not yet fully *** paper combines the complex network methodology with spatial econometrics to disentangle the contributions of innovation endowments,innovation network flows,and innovation network positions to regional innovation growth,as well as their spatial spillover *** primary findings suggest that regional innovation growth results from the networked agglomeration economies,which is shaped by the interactions between agglomeration factors and network ***,agglomeration factors play a fundamental role in regional innovation *** contrast,network factors,such as the network flows and network positions,may contribute to new path creation by promoting access to external innovation ***,the institutional factors show multiplexity in fostering regional innovation *** findings indicate that the YRD region should shift the innovation growth pattern from competitive involution to mutually beneficial cooperation to reduce regional *** this regard,the institutional capacity of organizing network flows and fostering reciprocal inter-city partnerships has become increasingly critical for promoting sustainable innovation and regional development.

City Networks of Online Commodity Services in China:Empirical Analysis of Tmall Clothing and Electronic Retailers

City networks have been a critical topic in the fields of urban geography and regional economics. Numerous studies have explored city networks, focusing mainly on infrastructure and industrial networks. Unlike traditional urban network of which the major measuring indexes are population sizes and entity industries, online commodity service networks could reflect well the influencing of emerging economies, especially the Internet economy, on city networks. This study analyzes and reveals structural features of China's city networks through online commodity services, providing the internet economic approach on city networks. Results indicate that the core cities of online commodity service networks are mainly concentrated in eastern coastal areas. In addition, spatial polarization and layer structure of network connections are obvious, descending from the centers in eastern China to peripheral cities in central and western China. Online commodity services of different cities show apparent differences and uncertainties in terms of specialization rates of international connection, which presents a tendency toward diversification. Online commodity service networks are not only associated with goods production, supply, and consumption in physical space but also reflect virtual information, capital, and technology flows, thus providing a new empirical approach for understanding city networks in information and internet economic age.
