Surface modification by non-thermal atmospheric plasma(NTAP)treatment can produce significantly higher carboxylic groups on the nanofibers(NF)surface,which potentially can increase biomineralization of NF via promoting glutamic acid(GLU)templated peptide conjugation.Herein,electrospun poly(lactide-co-glycolide)(PLGA)scaffolds were treated with NTAP and conjugated with GLU peptide followed by incubation in simulated body fluids for mineralization.The effect of NTAP treatment and GLU peptide conjugation on mineralization,surface wettability and roughness were investigated.The results showed that NTAP treatment significantly increased GLU peptide conjugation which consequently enhanced mineralization and mechanical properties of NTAP treated and peptide conjugated NF(GLU-pNF)compared to neat PLGA NF,NTAP treated NF(pNF)and GLU peptide conjugated NF(GLU-NF).The effect of surface modification on human bone marrow derived mesenchymal stem cells adhesion,proliferation and morphology was evaluated by cell proliferation assay and fluorescent microscopy.Results demonstrated that cellular adhesion and proliferation were significantly higher on GLU-pNF compared to NF,pNF and GLU-NF.In summary,NTAP treatment could be a promising modification technique to induce biomimetic peptide conjugation and biomineralization for bone tissue engineering applications.

Side effects of cisplatin,especially dose-dependent nephrotoxicity,are major factors limiting its use in cancer.Boldine((S)-2,9-dihydroxy-1,10-dimethoxy-aporphine)is a natural alkaloid known for its strong antioxidant activity present in leaves/bark of boldo tree(Peumus boldus Molina),a native tree in Chile.Here,we aimed to investigate the nephroprotective effect of boldine and its underlying mechanisms on cisplatin-induced rat renal injury.Thirty Wistar albino rats divided into 5 groups(Control,Cis,Bold.40,Cis+Bold.20,Cis+Bold.40 groups)were used.Rats received boldine(20 or 40 mg/kg/day),or vehicle(saline)intraperitoneal for 14 days and a single dose cisplatin(7 mg/kg,ip)was applied on the 10th day to induce nephrotoxicity.Rats and kidney tissue were weighed to determine kidney index.Blood urea nitrojen(BUN)and creatinine levels,the amount of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances(TBARS,an index of lipid peroxidation),superoxide dismutase(SOD),glutathione peroxidase(GPx)enzyme activities and tumor necrosis factor alpha(TNF-α)levels were measured and histopathologic examination was performed.Inducible nitric oxide synthase(iNOS)and caspase-3 expressions were detected immunohistochemically.Nephrotoxicity induced by cisplatin was apparent by elevated levels of BUN,creatinine,kidney index,TBARS and TNF-α,and decreased body weight,SOD and GPx enzyme levels.Pretreatment with boldine protected the renal function at both boldine doses by fixing the renal damage markers,oxidative stress,caspase-3 and iNOS expression.Histopathological findings supported biochemical findings.Taken together these findings indicate that boldine has promising protective effect against cisplatin nephrotoxicity by improving oxidative stress,inflammation,histopathological alterations and by alleviating caspase 3 expression.

Purpose:Digitoxin is a cardiac glycoside used in the treatment of heart failure.Inspired by its known antiinflammatory effect,this study aims to investigate the effect of digoxin in a sepsis model and to bring to light its effect and underlying mechanism in acute lung injury(ALI).Method:28 wistar albino rats were divided into 4 groups.Sepsis model is performed by the feces intraperitoneal-injection procedure(FIP).Results:TNF-a,CRP,IL-6,IL 1-Beta,lactic acid,and MDA values were significantly decreased in the FIP+digitoxin group compared to the FIP+Saline group.When the same groups were examined,histological improvements such as decrease in alveolar inflammation and decrease in septal thickening in the digitoxin group and thorax CT were found to be significantly higher in the Hounsfield unit digitoxin group compared to the Saline group.Conclusion:Digitoxin has shown biochemical improvement in sepsis with all known mechanisms of action,and healing effects in both computerized tomography and histology in the lung.

Paroxetine is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor(SSRI)used in the treatment of depression and anxiety disorders.In some epidemiological studies,slightly increased risks of major malformations and cardiac malformations have been reported following paroxetine exposure in the first trimester of pregnancy.However,such findings have been inconsistent.There is only one report of any overdose of an SSRI during pregnancy,and that involved escitalopram.The aim of this case report was to describe the impact of a paroxetine overdose in the first trimester of pregnancy on the health of the foetus.A 21-year-old mother of one child who was pregnant with a second child was prescribed 20 mg/day paroxetine hydrochloride for the treatment of anxiety/depression.The patient ingested 15 or 1620-mg tablets of paroxetine hydrochloride(300-320 mg)during the 5th week of pregnancy as a suicide attempt.Within 15 min of ingestion,she was admitted to hospital and treated for intoxication.No evidence of maternal SSRI intoxication was observed after treatment.The patient consulted our teratology information service for further risk assessment regarding possible major congenital malformations following the paroxetine overdose.We were unable to find previous reports of paroxetine overdose during pregnancy in the literature.The timely administration of the overdose treatment and the lack of maternal intoxication symptoms were considered positive for the foetal well-being,and the patient was referred for perinatology and psychiatry follow-ups.A healthy,3500-g male infant was born at 38 weeks’gestation,and his development at the age of 2 years was normal.This is the first reported case of paroxetine overdose during pregnancy.Comprehensive studies are needed to evaluate pregnancy outcomes after SSRI overdose.

Objective:Patients with gynecological cancer commonly use complementary and alternative medicine(CAM)methods to cope with the disease.However,despite the existence of treatment strategies,the effect of fear and anxiety caused by coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic on attitudes about CAM use is unclear.This study was carried out to investigate the effect of fear and anxiety experienced by patients with gynecological cancer during the COVID-19 pandemic on their attitudes towards the use of CAM.Methods:This is a cross-sectional and descriptive study that included 177 women with gynecological cancer;participants were recruited from a social networking site for cancer patients in Turkey between June and December 2021.Data were collected using an online survey that included the Personal Information Form,the Fear of COVID-19 Scale,the Coronavirus Anxiety Scale,and the Attitude Towards Holistic Complementary and Alternative Medicine Scale.Descriptive statistics,t-test,Pearson’s correlation test,and simple linear and multiple regression analyses were performed to analyze the data.Results:During the pandemic,55.4%of the participants reported using CAM methods,but only 22.6%were using CAM before the pandemic.The participants who used CAM during the pandemic also scored higher on the fear of COVID-19 and coronavirus anxiety scales(20.69±5.37 and 13.09±6.29,respectively)compared to the participants who did not use CAM(9.29±2.72 and 6.35±2.06,respectively).Fear of COVID-19 accounted for 52%of the CAM attitude score,while coronavirus anxiety accounted for 15%of the CAM attitude score.Fear of COVID-19 and coronavirus anxiety together accounted for 53%of CAM attitude.Conclusion:Gynecological cancer patients with high levels of COVID-19-related anxiety and fear during the pandemic used CAM more.Given that the psychological effects of the pandemic will continue in the coming years,CAM use should be evaluated as a coping strategy,especially due to the COVID-19-related anxiety and fear experienced by patients with gynecologica

通过室内实验和理论分析,研究了不同温度、压力条件下添加碳酸钙前后海泡石水基钻井液对不同渗透性地层的封堵性能,论证将碳酸钙作为堵漏剂添加到海泡石钻井液中的可行性。在实验温度为27~204℃、实验压力为2 070 kPa和6 895 kPa条件下进行流变性和滤失性测试,结果表明,除了在149℃时,其他各温度下海泡石钻井液流变性质较好、悬固能力较强,高温高压滤失量较低。孔隙堵塞器(PPA)实验中用孔径10~90μm的渗透性陶瓷盘模拟地层,实验结果表明,不含碳酸钙的海泡石钻井液不能封堵孔隙,而含碳酸钙的海泡石钻井液可在较短时间内封堵孔隙,且在高温下也能保持碳酸钙颗粒悬浮,使用温度可高达193℃。扫描电镜分析及理想充填理论分析结果验证了PPA实验结果。

Increased melatonin levels in aqueous humor of patients with proliferative retinopathy in type 2 diabetes mellitus

AIM： To report the association between melatonin levels in aqueous humor and serum, and diabetic retinopathy（DR） grade in type 2 diabetic patients.·METHODS： Aqueous humor and plasma samples from26 patients with DR（in nonproliferative and proliferative stages） and 14 control subjects were collected during cataract surgery after 6 p.m. Melatonin concentrations were determined using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay（ELISA）.·RESULTS： Melatonin levels were significantly higher in the aqueous humor of patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy（PDR） [18.57 ±2.67 pg/m L（range 15.20-23.06）vs 13.63±2.71 pg/m L（range 10.20-20.20）, P =0.0001], but not in those with nonproliferative retinopathy（NPDR）[13.79±2.56 pg/m L（range 9.80-20.10） vs 13.63±2.71 pg/m L（range 10.20-20.20）, P =0.961] compared to controls. There was decrement in the plasma melatonin level of patients with PDR, but no significant differences between the plasma melatonin levels of the study groups [ 5. 37 ±1.74 pg/m L（range 2.85-8.65） vs 6.11±1.90 pg/m L（range3.13-9.41）, P =0.293], or between control and DR groups[NPDR 6.11 ±1.90 pg/m L（range 3.13-9.41） vs control6.15±1.91 pg/m L（range 2.18-9.86）; PDR（5.37±1.74 pg/m L（range 2.85-8.65） vs control 6.15 ±1.91 pg/m L（range2.18-9.86）, P =0.808, P =0.264].·CONCLUSION： Elevated melatonin levels in aqueous humor in PDR may indicate the level to be associated with DR severity.

With the latest developments in the wireless communication systems, the alternative design methodologies are required for the broadband design of microwave components. In this paper, a compact broad band pass filter(BPF) design is introduced through the microwave design technique based on the active inductor(AIN) with the numerical computation and experimental measurement studies. The proposed AIN based BPF has operating frequency band extending from 0.8 GHz to 2.7GHz in compact size with high selectivity in comparison to conventional LC based BPF. The experimental measurement results agree well with the numerical computation results. The proposed AIN based BPF design has technical capability to be conveniently tuned to operate at different frequency bands.

A determination of the quality of life of children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes and their parents

Objective: Type 1 diabetes is a chronic illness which can have a negative effect on the health care and development of children and can put their lives in danger. This descriptive study aimed to determine the quality of life and the factors affecting it of children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes using the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL).Methods: The study was conducted in the Child Endocrinology Unit of a university Hospital in Bursa, Turkey. Totally 64 children eight-12 years and 85 adolescents aged 13-18 with type 1 diabetes and their parents were recruited. HbA1c measurements were obtained from the records of the endocrinology clinicare, which were made once every three months, and the average of the last three measurements was taken in the study. The PedsQL was used to measure quality of life of the children and adolescents. The data was analyzed using SPSS version 20.0 and P<0.05 was considered significant. The demographic data of the children and parents were analyzed using means and percentiles. Pearson's correlation analysis was used to assess the relationship between two averages. Results: Of the sub-groups on the scale, affective and school function scores were somewhat low, and social function scores were high. The quality of life scores of the children and adolescents were found to correlate with those of their parents. A negative correlation was found between HbA1c levels and adolescent quality of life, a positive correlation was found between the child's age and the quality of life of the child and parents, and a negative correlation was found between the number of children in the family and the quality of life of the child and parents. Conclusions: An evaluation of the quality of life after a diagnosis of diabetes can be used to assess the problems which may be faced by children and adolescents and to combat these problems.
