An innovative cartographic concept——The geodynamic Map of the Mediterranean

Rationale of the map The collision between eurasia and Africa-Arabia started in Paleogene times and is still active today. The recent geodynamics of the Arabo-Mediterranean domain are dominated by the progressive closure of remnant oceanic basins squeezed between the eurasian margin and the Nubia （Africa） and Arabia plates. Various stages of consumption have been reached from Gibraltar to Oman, ranging from incipient inversion （e.g. the North African margin）, to subduction （Mesozoic basins of the eastern Mediterranean） and collision （e.g. the Zagros or Caucasus belts）. Convergence is accompanied by deformation of both eurasian and African margins, mostly as diffuse compression, but also as extension in short-lived basins and motion of blocks escaping towards the remnant oceanic spaces. The resulting kinematic pattern is quite complex. Western Mediterranean domain is merely accommodating the slow convergence of Nubia, whereas the still high convergence of Arabia in the eastern domain has pushed Anatolia sideways, which is now laterally escaping to the west-southwest.

Love wave tomography in Italy from seismic ambient noise

We estimate Love wave empirical Green＇s functions from cross-correlations of ambient seismic noise to study the crust and uppermost mantle structure in Italy. Transverse-component ambient noise data from October 2005 through March 2007 recorded at 114 seismic stations from the istituto Nazionale di geofisica e vulcanologia （INGV） national broadband network, the Mediterranean Very Broadband Seismographic Network （MedNet） and the Austrian Central Institute for Meteorology and geodynamics （ZAMG） yield more than 2 000 Love wave group velocity measurements using the multiple-filter analysis technique. In the short period band （5-20 s）, the cross-correlations show clearly one-sided asymmetric feature due to non-tmiform noise distribution and high local activities, and in the long period band （〉20 s） this feature becomes weak owing to more diffusive noise distribution. Based on these measurements, Love wave group velocity dispersion maps in the 8-34 s period band are constructed, then the SH wave velocity structures from the Love wave dispersions are inverted. The final results obtained from Love wave data are overall in good agreement with those from Rayleigh waves. Both Love and Rayleigh wave inversions all reveal that the Po plain basin is resolved with low velocity at shallow depth, and the Tyrrhenian sea is characterized with higher velocity below 8 km due to its thin oceanic crust.

The China Seismo-electromagnetic Satellite(CSeS),China’s first satellite to measure geophysical fields with scientific goals in both space and solid earth physics,was launched successfully in February *** carries high-precision magnetometers to measure the geomagnetic *** this study,the CSeS magnetic data were used to extract the signal of the lithospheric magnetic field caused by magnetized rocks in the crust and uppermost ***,an along-track analysis of the CSeS magnetic data was undertaken near the Bangui magnetic anomaly in central Africa and the Tarim magnetic anomaly in China,demonstrating that the CSeS magnetic data are indeed sensitive to the lithospheric magnetic anomaly *** a lithospheric magnetic anomaly map over China and surrounding regions was *** map is consistent with the lithospheric part of the CHAOS-7 *** particular,it clearly reveals four major magnetic anomalies containing long-wavelength signals at the altitude of lowearth-orbiting *** magnetic highs are located over the Tarim,Sichuan and Songliao basin,the origins of which could be related to large-scale tectonic-magmatic activities during geological history.A prominent magnetic low is otherwise found in the southern Himalayan-Tibetan plateau,possibly caused by the shallow Curie depth in this *** further improve the precision of the lithospheric magnetic field model,more detailed data processing and multi-source data merging are needed.
