Objective:To investigate the larvicidai activity of essential oil and methanol extract of the Nepeta menthoides（***） against main malaria vector,Anopheles stephensi（An. stephensi）.Methods:The essential oil of planl was obtained by Clevenger type apparatus and the methanol extract was supplied with Percolation method,larvicidai activity was tested by WHO *** five fourth-instar larvae of *** were used in the larvicidai assay and four replicates were tested for each *** different concentrations of the oil and extract were tested for calculation of LC50 and LC50 ***:The LC50 and LC90 values were determined by probit ***50 was 69.5 and 234.3 ppm and LC50 was 175.5 and 419.9 ppm for the extract and essential oil ***:According to the results of this study methanolic extract of plant exhibited more larvicidai activity than essential *** could be useful for investigation of new natural larvicidai compounds.

AIM： To examine the frequency of antibiotic resistance in iranian Helicobacter pylori （ H pylon） strains isolated from two major hospitals in Tehran.METHODS： Examination of antibiotic resistance was performed on 120 strains by modified disc diffusion test and PCR-RFLP methods. In addition, in order to identify the possible causes of the therapeutic failure in Iran, we also determined the resistance of these strains to the most commonly used antibiotics （metronidazole, amoxicillin, and tetracycline） by modified disc diffusion test. RESULTS： According to modified disc diffusion test, 1.6% of the studied strains were resistant to amoxicillin, 16.7% to clarithromycin, 57.5% to metronidazole, and there was no resistance to tetracycline. Of the clarithromycin resistant strains, 73.68% had the A2143G mutation in the 23SrRlVA gene, 21.05% A2142C, and 5.26% A2142G. None of the sensitive strains were positive for any of the three point mutations. Of the metronidazole resistant strains, deletion in rdxA gene was studied and detected in only 6 （5%） of the antibiogram-based resistant strains. None of the metronidazole sensitive strains possessed rdxA gene deletion. CONCLUSION： These data show that despite the fact that clarithromycin has not yet been introduced to the iranian drug market as a generic drug, nearly 20% rate of resistance alerts toward the frequency of macrolide resistance strains, which may be due to the widespread prescription of erythromycin in Iran. rdxA gene inactivation, if present in iranian Hpyloristrains, may be due to other genetic defects rather than gene deletion.

Objective:To determine the prevalence of HIV infection among homeless men and women and the related risk behaviors in Tehran,***:In 2007-2008,Tehran municipality stacked up 10657 homeless men and women for assessment of HIV and began collaboration with iranian research center for HIV/AIDS(IRCHA)departments to conduct HIV infection prevalence surveys in homeless *** results were analyzed for associations with demographic information,family support,status of drug abuse and relation with family and ***:Overall HIV prevalence was 1.7%(95%confidence interval 1.4-1.9).Factors independently associated with HIV infection included history of using drugs[AOR 8.15(4.86-13.67)].older age[AOR1.80(1.08-2.99)for 40-55 yr],occupation[AOR 1.64(1.19-2.24)for unemployed],and no relation with family[AOR 1.82(l.30-2.54)|.Conclusions:This study supports the idea that injection drug use is contributing to the increased spread of HIV among iranian *** reduction programs should be expanded,particularly among homeless injection drug users.

Effect of Ascorbic Acid and Silicium on Photosynthesis, Antioxidant Enzyme Activity, and Fatty Acid Contents in Canola Exposure to Salt Stress

The effects of exogenous ascorbic acid and silicium on leaf fresh weigh, seed yield, photosynthesis, changes of the activities of major antioxidant enzymes, nitrate reductase activity, proline accumulation, chlorophyll content, and fatty acid composition were investigated in salt-stressed canola. A hydroponic pot experiment was conducted based on randomized complete block design, factorial arrangement was used with 16 combinations of salinity stress （0, 100, 200, and 300 mmol L-1 NaC1）, ascorbic acid （0 and 30 mmol L-1）, and silicium （2 and 4 mmol L-1 from potassium silicate） with three replicates. The results showed that salinity significantly decreased leaf area and leaf fresh weight, seed yield, photosynthesis, nitrate reductase activity, chlorophyll content, and seed protein percentage. Conversely, respiration, antioxidant enzymes activity, proline accumulation, and linolenic acid percentage increased due to salt stress. Ascorbic acid application improved photosynthesis and seed yield and mitigated antioxidant enzyme activity. In addition, nitrate reductase activity and chlorophyll a and b were positively affected by ascorbic acid. Regarding silicium application, that was found that leaf area, leaf fresh weight, seed yield and photosynthesis, ascorbate peroxidase activity, nitrate reductase activity, and chlorophyll content increased, while respiration decreased. Furthermore, silicium had not significant effect on antioxidant enzyme activity. In general, ascorbic acid and silicium were involved in the defensive mechanisms against salinity stress and it can be suggested that, ascorbic acid and silicium application had positive effect on canola growth under conditions of salt stress.

Cough, as a defensive reflux mechanism, removes foreign objects and secretions from bronchi and bron- chioles of airways. Zataria multiflora is a popular plant for treatment of cough in iranian traditional med- icine. The aim of this review was to evaluate the potency of Z. multiflora as an alternative treatment in management of acute cough and its possible mechanisms of action. Here the authors compiled informa- tion about Z. multiflora in the treatment of cough from all accessible resources and books. The results of this investigation showed that there were five clinical studies that evaluated the efficacy of Z. multiflora essential oil or extract alone （n = 1 ）, in combination with Althaea officinalis （n = 2） or Foeniculum vulgate essential oil （n = 1 ）, in the form of syrup （n = 3）, oral drop （n = 1 ） and soft capsule （n = 1 ）, for the treatment of acute cough in comparison with placebo or synthetic drugs （bromhexine, dextromethorphan and clobutinol）. All clinical studies confirmed the efficacy ofZ multiflora in the amelioration of acute cough in pediatric （n = 1） and adult patients （n = 4） without any adverse effects. Different mechanisms, such as anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antimicrobial, relaxant and immune-enhancement, may be responsible for the efficacy of Z. multiflora in cough relief. Other clinical trials can be performed with Z. multiflora in com- bination with ivy leaf extract or primrose root extract on patients with cough.

We present an analysis of the diffuse soft X-ray emission from the nuclear region of M51 combining both XMM-Newton RGS and Chandra data. Most of the RGS spectrum of M51 can be fitted with a thermal model with a temperature of 0.5 keV except for the O vii triplet, which is forbidden-line dominated. The Fe L-shell lines peak around the southern cloud, where the O viii and N vn Lya lines also peak. In contrast, the peak of the O vii forbidden line is about 10＂ offset from that of the other lines, indicating that it is from a spatially distinct component. The spatial distribution of the O vii triplet mapped by the Chandra data shows that most of the O vii triplet flux is located at faint regions near edges, instead of the southern cloud where other lines peak. This distribution of the O vii triplet is inconsistent with the photoionization model. Other mechanisms that could produce the anomalous O vii triplet, including a recombining plasma and charge exchange X-ray emission, are discussed.
