Validity and Reliability of an Information-Motivation-Skill-Behavior Questionnaire: A Gender-Sensitive HIV Survey

Background: Despite the essence of HIV-related surveys, their precision in measurement of intended constructs has been an area of controversy. Considering the increasing trend of sexual transmission of HIV among women, standard gender-sensitive tools can yield pivotal information for researchers and policy-makers in Iran. Aim: To evaluate the reliability and validity of a questionnaire (IMSB) based on the Information-Motivation-Behavior model of HIV-related behavior prediction. Methods: The IMSB survey constituted of five main domains: HIV-related knowledge, attitudes toward people living with HIV, motivation to practice safe-sex, skills to practice safe-sex, and HIV-related behaviors. Completed questionnaires (n = 189) from pilot phases of three projects were accessed. We assessed face and content validity through expert consultation and respondent feed-backs for the primary pool of items. Discriminant validity was measured utilizing non-parametric tests. Cronbach’s alpha was calculated for each domain to assess internal consistency, and paired t-tests were used to measure stability over time. Results: The primary pool of items was reduced in the process of validation. The discriminant validity was appraised to be favorable since the survey can differentiate between age groups, women with different levels of education and marital status. The survey was reliable in 4 domains;but a Cronbach’s alpha of 0.6 was reported for the fifth domain (HIV-related behaviors). Younger women had higher knowledge and motivation scores;single women were more motivated to practice safe-sex and divorced/widowed women had lower motivation and skills scores. Conclusion: This questionnaire can be used as a valid and reliable tool to measure the IMB constructs. The lower reliability of the “behavior” domain is probably rooted in societal norms and cultural definitions. Based on the panel data of China’s foreign aid in 2003-2014 from AidData,this paper empirically investigates the relationship between China’s foreign aid and economic growth in recipient *** the principal component analysis(PCA),the authors propose a variable,*** infrastructure index,to measure the effects of aid on the economic growth of recipient *** study shows that aid from China has significantly improved the level of economic growth in recipient countries,which provides a new evidence of China’s aid *** analysis of the ways by which aid in infrastructure induces economic growth,the authors conclude that the improvement of local infrastructure accounts for 55.30%of the aggregate economic growth effect of China’s aid to recipient countries.

Centrifugation: an important pre-analytic procedure that influences plasma microRNA quantification during blood processing

Circulating microRNAs are robustly present in plasma or serum and have become a research focus as biomarkers for tumor diagnosis and *** is a necessary procedure for obtaining highquality blood ***,we investigated one-step and two-step centrifugations,two centrifugal methods routinely used in microRNA study,to explore their effects on plasma microRNA *** microRNAs obtained from one-step and two-step centrifugations were quantified by microarray and TaqMan-based real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction(Q-PCR).Dynamic light scattering was performed to explore the difference underlying the two centrifugal *** results from the microarray containing 1,347 microRNAs showed that the signal detection rate was greatly decreased in the plasma sample prepared by two-step *** importantly,the microRNAs missing in this plasma sample could be recovered and detected in the precipitate generated from the second *** with the results from microarray,a marked decrease of three representative microRNAs in twostep centrifugal plasma was validated by *** to the size distribution of all nanoparticles in plasma,there were fewer nanoparticles with size>1,000 nm in two-step centrifugal *** experiments directly demonstrated that different centrifugation methods produced distinct quantities of plasma ***,exosomes or protein complexes containing microRNAs may be involved in large nanoparticle formation and may be precipitated after two-step *** results remind us that sample processing methods should be first considered in conducting research.

The Largest Chinese Cohort Study Indicates Homologous Recombination Pathway Gene Mutations as Another Major Genetic Risk Factor for Colorectal Cancer with Heterogeneous Clinical Phenotypes

While genetic factors were associated with over 30% of colorectal cancer (CRC) patients, mutations in CRC-susceptibility genes were identified in only 5% to 10% of these patients. Besides, previous studies on hereditary CRC were largely designed to analyze germline mutations in patients with single genetic high-risk factor, which limited understanding of the association between genotype and phenotypes. From January 2015 to December 2018, we retrospectively enrolled 2,181 patients from 8,270 consecutive CRC cases, covering 5 categories of genetic high-risk factors. Leukocyte genomic DNA was analyzed for germline mutations in cancer predisposition genes. The germline mutations under each category were detected and analyzed in association with CRC susceptibility, clinical phenotypes, and prognoses. A total of 462 pathogenic variants were detected in 19.3% of enrolled CRC patients. Mismatch repair gene mutation was identified in 9.1% of patients, most prevalent across all high-risk groups. Homologous recombination (HR) gene mutations were detected in 6.5% of cases, penetrated in early-onset and extra-colonic cancer risk groups. Mutations in HR genes, including BARD1, RAD50, and ATM, were found to increase CRC risk with odds ratios of 2.8-, 3.1-, and 3.1-fold, respectively. CRC patients with distinct germline mutations manifested heterogeneous phenotypes in clinicopathology and long-term prognoses. Thus, germline mutation screenings should be performed for CRC patients with any of those genetic risk factors. This study also reveals that HR gene mutations may be another major driver for increased CRC risk.

Purpose: The main goal of this article is to review the literature of general health and nasal anatomical-physiological profile of the elderly, prior to considering them as a candidate for primary cosmetic rhinoplasty (PCR). Rhinoplasty is the cosmetic nose’s surgical alteration. Materials and Methods: We extracted the information from internet search engines and the End Note software version X7. Criteria were applied to the most appropriate clinical messages related to the elderly. We focused on their general health status and their nasal anatomicalphysiological considerations prior to consider them for undergoing PCR. research links were mostly from the Pub Med and the Medline databases. Results: the literature review showed that as people age, their health status and anatomical-physiological components of their nose alter. Their nasal anatomical supports get weaker, and their nasal internal and external physiology undergoes modifications. Functions related to the nasal supports, normal physiology of smell, airway passage, humidification mechanism and their general appearances are affected by age. Conclusion: Cosmetic surgeons must be aware of the aforementioned changes of the patients’ past and present health. Considering performing a complete systemic evaluation and the nasal anatomical-physical examination to assess the degrees of alterations, are crucial pre-operatively.

Clinical correlations between chronic hepatitis C infection and decreasing bone mass density after treatment with interferon-alpha

Objective: To compare the bone mass density in chronic hepatitis patients before and after interferon-a ***: A total of 70 patients with chronic hepatitis C were treated with interferon-a and were evaluated. The treatment dosage was three million IU three times a week for one year. All the patients underwent bone mass density detection at lumbar spine and femoral neck before and after the interferon-a treatment. All the necessary information such as age,sex, and laboratory test, history of occurrence of fractures, lifestyle, and menopause status was collected by interviewers face-to-face from participants at the research visit. Smoking was categorized by whether participants were nonsmokers or smokers. Menopause was designated if there had been complete cessation of menses for more than 12 months. All statistical analyses were performed by SPSS version 14(SPSS, Inc., Chicago, IL, USA).Results: Among 70 patients, 52% were male, 48% were female and the mean age was(57.0 ± 9.6) years(range: 24–79). Twenty-nine percent of the patients had a history of smoking. The mean body mass index was(24.4 ± 3.6) kg/m^2(range: 18.4–35.3). Of the70 cases, 21 had high fibrosis-4. The prevalence of overall fracture history was 2.9%(two patients).Conclusions: Chronic hepatitis C virus infection did increase the risk of development of metabolic bone disease in this cohort. Indeed, greater reduction of bone mass density occurs in advanced liver fibrosis. The bone loss in earlier stages of chronic hepatitis C infection is likely to result from increased bone reduction rather than decreased bone formation. Overall, these observations suggest an important role for chronic hepatitis C virus infection in increased bone turnover in osteodystrophy pathogenesis.

Low and non-uniform illumination color image enhancement using weighted guided image filtering

In the state of the art,grayscale image enhancement algorithms are typically adopted for enhancement of RGB color images captured with low or non-uniform *** these methods are applied to each RGB channel independently,imbalanced inter-channel enhancements(color distortion)can often be observed in the resulting *** the other hand,images with non-uniform illumination enhanced by the retinex algorithm are prone to artifacts such as local blurring,halos,and *** address these problems,an improved RGB color image enhancement method is proposed for images captured under nonuniform illumination or in poor visibility,based on weighted guided image filtering(WGIF).Unlike the conventional retinex algorithm and its variants,WGIF uses a surround function instead of a Gaussian filter to estimate the illumination component;it avoids local blurring and halo artifacts due to its anisotropy and adaptive local *** limit color distortion,RGB images are first converted to HSI(hue,saturation,intensity)color space,where only the intensity channel is enhanced,before being converted back to RGB space by a linear color restoration *** results show that the proposed method is effective for both RGB color and grayscale images captured under low exposure and non-uniform illumination,with better visual quality and objective evaluation scores than from comparator *** is also efficient due to use of a linear color restoration algorithm.

Magnesium(Mg)alloys are gaining great consideration as body implant materials due to their high biodegradability and ***,they suffer from low corrosion resistance and antibacterial *** this research,semi-powder metallurgy followed by hot extrusion was utilized to produce the magnesium oxide@graphene nanosheets/magnesium(MgO@GNS/Mg)composite to improve mechanical,corrosion and cytocompatibility *** have revealed that the incorporation of MgO@GNS nanohybrids into Mg-based composite enhanced microhardness and compressive *** vitro,osteoblast cell culture tests show that using MgO@GNS nanohybrid fillers enhances osteoblast adhesion and apatite *** presence of MgO@GNS nanoparticles in the composites decreased the opening defects,micro-cracks and micro-pores of the composites thus preventing the penetration of the corrosive solution into the *** demonstrated that the MgO@GNS/Mg composite possesses excellent antibacterial properties because of the combination of the release of MgO and physical damage to bacterium membranes caused by the sharp edges of graphene nanosheets that can effectively damage the cell wall thereby facilitating penetration into the bacterial lipid ***,the MgO@GNS/Mg composite with high mechanical strength,antibacterial activity and corrosion resistance is considered to be a promising material for load-bearing implant applications.
