Soil organic carbon(SOC) content and its stable carbon isotopic composition(within the upper 1 m) were measured to determine the e?ect of land-use changes from dry evergreen forest to maize fields in eastern *** land cover maps,derived from aerial photography and satellite images for years 1989,1996,and 2002 were used in association with field surveys and farmer interviews to derive land-use history and to assist in study site *** from forest to maize cultivation for the duration of 12 years reduced SOC stocks at the rate of 6.97 Mg C ha-1 *** was most pronounced in the top 10 cm soil layer,which was 47% after 12 years of *** carbon isotope data revealed that the main fraction lost was forest-derived *** low input rates of maize-derived C were not sufficient to maintain SOC at the level prior to forest *** 12 years of continuous maize cultivation,the maize-derived C fraction made up about 20% of total SOC(5 Mg ha-1 of the total 25.31 Mg ha-1).

Stripe rust, caused by Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici, is a devastating wheat disease worldwide. The Chinese wheat cultivar Chuanmai 32 has shown stable resistance to stripe rust for 10 yr in Sichuan Province, a hotspot for stripe rust epidemics. The objective of the present study was to map quantitative trait loci （QTL） for adult-plant resistance （APR） to stripe rust in a population of 140 recombinant inbred lines （RILs） derived from Chuanmai 32/Chuanyu 12. Field trials were conducted in Chengdu and Yaan, Sichuan, from 2005 to 2008, providing stripe rust reaction data for 6 environments. 797 simple sequence repeat （SSR） markers were screened for association with stripe rust reaction, initially through bulked segregant analysis （BSA）. Based on the mean disease values averaged across environments, the broad-sense heritability of maximum disease severity （MDS） was 0.75. Two QTLs for stripe rust resistance were detected by composite interval mapping （CIM）. They were designated ***-3BL and ***-3BS and explained from 6.6 to 20.1%, respectively, of the phenotypic variance across environments. ***-3BL came from Chuanmai 32; ***-3BS with lower effect was from the susceptible parent Chuanyu 12. Both QTLs appear to be new.

Linking atmospheric pollution to cryospheric change in the Third Pole region: current progress and future prospects

Based on Fuerstein’s Mediated Learning Experience and other related theories, this study is conducted among teachers（Chinese teachers and foreign teachers） and students in college English classroom to exam their perceptions of the mediation theory. The comparative analysis was made between Chinese teachers’ ’ and foreign teachers’ views of the importance of the mediation theory and usages of the mediation tools. And then students’ comments on teachers’ ’ practice were also analysized. Analysis results indicate that bother Chinese teachers and foreign teachers acknowledge the importance of the mediation theory in college English class, but there is an obvious difference among their views and practices. And in practice both foreign teachers and Chinese teachers behave differently with their consciousness. Teachers’ self-evaluations are also different from students’ evaluations.

The Tibetan Plateau and its surroundings are known as the Third Pole(TP). This region is noted for its high rates of glacier melt and the associated hydrological shifts that affect water supplies in asia. Atmospheric pollutants contribute to climatic and cryospheric changes through their effects on solar radiation and the albedos of snow and ice surfaces; moreover, the behavior and fates within the cryosphere and environmental impacts of environmental pollutants are topics of increasing concern. In this review, we introduce a coordinated monitoring and research framework and network to link atmospheric pollution and cryospheric changes(APCC) within the TP region. We then provide an up-to-date summary of progress and achievements related to the APCC research framework, including aspects of atmospheric pollution's composition and concentration, spatial and temporal variations, trans-boundary transport pathways and mechanisms, and effects on the warming of atmosphere and changing in Indian monsoon, as well as melting of glacier and snow cover. We highlight that exogenous air pollutants can enter into the TP's environments and cause great impacts on regional climatic and environmental changes. At last, we propose future research priorities and map out an extended program at the global scale. The ongoing monitoring activities and research facilitate comprehensive studies of atmosphere–cryosphere interactions, represent one of China's key research expeditions to the TP and the polar regions and contribute to the global perspective of earth system science.

Effects of Environmental Noise on School Performance among Hearing-Impaired Students

Background and Purpose: Our study examined the effect of ambient noise on hearing and school performance in children with hearing loss, and the relationship between hearing loss and cognition. Method: A pilot study involving 728 people (aged 11 to 16 years) was conducted in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo. All participants completed the ENAFEP test, the SIFTER short scale, pure tone audiometry, and a three-digit test. Teachers and investigators completed a 6-day listening training course. Results: Correlation and structural equation modeling indicated that ambient noise and five cognitive domains were associated with hearing in noise, but only unmeasured cognition was associated with hearing loss and poor academic performance. Cognitive compensation significantly reduces communication problems and improves concentration and academic performance. Noise and deafness had significant and moderate effects on academic performance (r = -0.13). Conclusion: The sample size and relatively high participation rate meant the study was representative. However, the results showed an association between ambient noise, hearing loss and cognition, and reduced school performance. Large-scale randomized interventions for hearing loss and long-term noise exposure studies are needed to measure cognitive outcomes after short- and multi-year noise exposure.
