Analysis of Chinese Manufacturing Export Duration

This paper studies the duration of Chinese manufacturing exports and its determinants, using disaggregated 6-digit level Harmonized System product trade data from 1995 to 2007. Cox proportional hazard, Weibull and exponential models are used to examine the effects of various factors on export duration. It is revealed that export duration tends to be rather short-lived. It is also found that GDP and GDP per capita of the export destination have positive effects on export duration, while trade relationships with distant and landlocked countries are generally of shorter duration. In addition, export duration is longer for differentiated and parts and components products, as well as products with large initial trade values. WTO membership is also important for longer export duration. Our empirical analysis suggests that developed markets, such as the USA and the EU, are important to China, and should still be the major sources for Chinese export growth in the long run. Moreover, technical innovation of firms and free trade agreement negotiations will be helpful for sustainable export growth.

New industrialization in China, different from its past economic development pattern or patterns in developed nations, is the country’s theoretical innovation based on the positive and negative experiences of industrialization at home and worldwide. New industrialization has various novel characteristics, including new sources of efficiency, new factors of production, new organizational forms, and new constraints. In addition, it has certain particularities arising from modernization with Chinese characteristics. This article summarizes the characteristics of new industrialization from the perspectives of people-centered approach, quality-first concept, independent innovation, green low-carbon economics, digital-real integration, and open circulation. There are four systems for promoting new industrialization: A self-sustained scientific and technological system, a high-end advanced manufacturing system, a green low-carbon circular system, and a division of labor system with domestic and international circulation. The Chinese new industrialization proposes the pathway and policy measures considering the new global situation and the requirements of new goals of strengthening organization and leadership, reducing factor cost, accelerating independent technological innovation, smoothing domestic and international circulation, and optimizing competition environment.

internationalizing technical standards is crucial for global standardization ***,the reasons and influencing factors due to which some states pursue a leading role in certain international standards but not in others have not been thoroughly *** study uses an integrated theoretical framework and case analysis to explore the internationalization of Chinese standards in broadcast marketing,railway,electrified railway,and university-business *** findings suggest that the maturity of the standardization field and the complexity of technical standards are the primary factors influencing choices,with the decision to lead being largely dependent on the ***,when technical standards are highly complex,a country can choose to take the lead,while a high maturity of the standardization field or less advanced technical standards make following *** conclusions provide valuable insights for economists,policymakers,and non-governmental standards-setting groups in emerging countries,encouraging their participation in various international standardization domains.

The optimization of government subsidies to enhance the efficiency of coal companies’green transformation constitutes a critical component in the pursuit of global *** investigate the influence mechanism of government subsidies on the green transformation using data from the listed coal companies in China from 2007 to *** to our findings and hypothesis testing,previous government subsidies did not have a significant direct impact on coal companies’green ***,government subsidies can help coal companies transition to greener practices by promoting innovative green ***,we confirmed an indirect route:that government subsidies enable the adoption of low-carbon initiatives,which in turn could facilitate the transition of coal companies towards green *** addition,we discovered that the coal company’s digitization will improve this indirect ***,we propose increasing the effectiveness of government subsidies in facilitating coal companies’transition to green practices by focusing on technological advancements and enhancing company digitalization.

The present study assesses how governance affects information and communication technology(IcT)at the global level contingent on macroeconomic policy factors such as trade,foreign direct investment(FDI),manufacturing value added,and agricultural value *** study focuses on 183 countries from 2003 to 2021,and the empirical evidence is based on the generalized method of moments(GMM).The following main findings are *** the full sample,governance unconditionally promotes ICT development,while trade openness(industrial added value)moderates governance to promote(dampen)ICT *** sub-Saharan Africa,only trade openness effectively moderates governance to induce an overall positive effect on ICT,while in the Middle East and North Africa(MENA)region,all policy variables moderate governance for an overall positive incidence on ICT sector *** findings for the MENA region are confirmed in the Europe and Central Asia(ECA)region,with the exception of the moderating role of industrial added value,which engenders an overall negative *** the East and South Asia and the Pacific(ESAP)countries,one overall positive incidence is apparent in the role of trade openness,while net negative effects are established from the moderating roles of industrial added value and agricultural added *** the American sub-sample,a positive(negative)net effect is apparent from the role of industrial added value(trade)in moderating the incidence of gover-nance on ICT sector ***,policy implications are discussed.

Using a value-added accounting framework,we conducted empirical research to analyze product value-added in accordance with the principle of value-sourcing and value-absorption areas,so as to decode"the trade-comovement puzzle."As our study shows,value-added trade can provide a significant positive stimulus for the economic comovement,but it is marked by asymmetry between hub and spoke countries with the former having a pivotal *** analysis of cohesive subgroups indicates that cohesive subgroups and value-added trade are *** bilateral countries belong to the same subgroup,the intensity of their value-added trade exerts an increasing influence on the economic *** has adopted a non-equilibrium opening up strategy and has actively boosted value-added linkages with hub countries;its utilization of the correlative effect of economic growth will enable it to achieve convergence with the growth of high-income *** the same time,China is taking advantage of being the core node in the Belt and Road trade network and is continuing to boost the construction of the Belt and Road Initiative,providing channels for countries along the Belt and Road to integrate into the global value-added system of division of labor and building a global economic environment that features win-win collaboration and co-development.

Labor Quality and Inward FDI:A Firm-level Empirical Study in China

This paper investigates the relationship between labor quality and inward foreign direct investment （FDI） distribution in China using a large sample of Chinese cross-sectionaL firm-level data, with comprehensive information about labor quality. The paper finds that labor quality measured by education level plays an important role in deciding the distribution of inward FDL but labor quality measured by working certifieates loses its significance using non-parametric matching techniques and the instrumental variables and generalized method of moments technique. The author also finds that labor quality has a more significant impact on other foreign investments than Hong Kong-invested, Maeau-invested and Taiwan- invested firms. The impacts of labor quality on inward FDI are found to be strongly uneven across industries andprovinces. Therefore, China shouldpay more attention to the education of employees in all foreign-invested firms, and invest more in education to improve labor quality, which will help China to attract more FDI, especially technology-intensive FDI

After the formation of the World trade Organization(WTO)in 1995,most countries gradually reduced their import tariffs to a fairly low ***,the reduced tariffs could not he simply read as a reduction in trade ***,many suspect that countries tend to use more non-tariff measures(NTMs),substituting them for tariff barriers,to protect their domestic *** paper uses newly compiled and detailed Chinese NTM data,together with highly disaggregated firm import data and manufacturing firm operational data,to investigate the impact of China s import-related NTMs on firm *** main empirical results show that,as in the case of tariff barriers,China s trade policy NTMs mainly inhibit firms'intermediate *** contrast,China s public policy NTMs significantly improve the intensive and extensive margins of firm s intermediate imports and raise the prices and quality of imported *** greater the extent to which a firm engages in processing trade,the larger is the promoting effect of public policy NTMs on the firm s import margins far intermediate inputs,and the greater is the restricting ejfect on the prices and the quality of the firm's imported inputs.

Greater participation in global value chains(GVCs)has highlighted the impact of exchange rate shocks on international *** paper examines how such participation influences firms'responses to exchange rate movements,focusing on the relationship between firms'pricing and value-added in *** study,using detailed Chinese firm-level data,demonstrates that firms with a high degree of GVC participation reacted to currency appreciation by lowering their export prices more substantially and reducing their export volumes *** is mainly attributable to the"cost-hedging effect"within the marginal cost channel and the"pricing inhibition effect"within the markup *** categorizing export firms by trade models and product types,this study further demonstrates that processing trade firms at the low end of the value chain and those with low product differentiation were more inclined to absorb exchange rate *** study adds to the existing theoretical framework and provides strong evidence for China in deepening GVC integration and supporting the development of high-quality export firms.
