Quantitative analysis of the impact of droughts and floods on internal wars in China over the last 500 years

Although many large-N quantitative studies have evidenced the adverse effects of climatic extremes on social stability in China during the historical period, most of them rely on temperature and precipitation as major explanatory variables, while the influence of floods and droughts on social crises is rarely measured. Furthermore, a comparison of the climate-society nexus among different geographic regions and at different temporal scales is missing in those studies. To address this knowledge gap,this study examines quantitatively the influence of floods and droughts on internal wars in three agro-ecological(rice, wheat,and pastoral) regions in China in AD1470–1911. Poisson regression and wavelet transform coherence analyses are applied to allow for the non-linear and non-stationary nature of the climate-war nexus. Results show that floods and droughts are significant in driving internal wars in historical China, but are characterized by strong regional variation. In the rice region, floods trigger internal wars at the inter-annual and multi-decadal time scales. In the wheat region, both floods and droughts cause internal wars at the inter-annual and multi-decadal time scales. In the pastoral region, internal wars are associated with floods only at the multi-decadal time scale. In addition, the multi-decadal coherence between hydro-climatic extremes and internal wars in all three of the agro-ecological regions is only significant in periods in which population density is increasing or the upper limit of regional carrying capacity is being reached. The above results imply that the climate-war nexus is mediated by regional geographic factors such as physical environmental setting and population pressure. Hence, we encourage researchers who study the historical human-climate relationship to boil down data according to geographic regions in the course of statistical analysis and to examine each region individually in follow-up studies.

Sci-tech innovation is an important measure for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area to achieve high-quality economic ***,there is a coupling coordination relationship between sci-tech innovation and high-quality economic development,and coordinating the relationship between the two is beneficial to building the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area into an international innovation and technology hub and promoting high-quality economic *** present,the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area has seen a year-on-year increase in both the level of sci-tech innovation and the level of high-quality economic development,with a sound development *** coupling coordination degree between sci-tech innovation and high-quality economic development has steadily improved from a slightly uncoordinated stage to a primarily coordinated stage,but the overall degree of coordination is still not high,with some gaps from realizing the excellently coordinated *** the perspective of spatial distribution,the internal development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area is unbalanced,with obvious differences in development level and coupling coordination degree among *** convergence analysis shows that the differences in the coupling coordination degree among the cities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area have stabilized after narrowing during the study ***,the difference among the cities with higher coupling coordination degrees tends to widen in recent ***,necessary measures should be taken to promote the coordination between sci-tech innovation and high-quality economic development in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Introduction: The social inequality in smoking in the Western countries has been increasing. It has been suggested that the most important strategy to reduce health inequalities related to socio economic status (SEP) is to promote smoking cessation in persons with low SEP. One could fear that a smoking cessation intervention might benefit smokers with high SEP more, and thereby increase the social inequality in smoking. We wanted to investigate whether the effect differed across SEP. Methods: The study was an individual multi-factorial lifestyle intervention study with a control group, inter99 (1999-2006), Copenhagen, Denmark. We included 1991 daily-smokers with self-reported information on education in the intervention group, and 1135 in the control group. Smokers in the intervention group were repeatedly offered individual life-style-counselling and group-based smoking cessation. We used generalised linear mixed models under the assumption of missing at random, including interaction term between intervention effect and SEP. Results: The gap in self-reported abstinence rates increased over time between persons with high and low education. Probability of abstinence was significantly higher in the intervention group than in the control group, at all follow-up-visits but the effect of the intervention changed over time. The differences in quit-rates across educational groups were not significantly different in the intervention than in the control group at any time. Conclusion: In this randomised population-based intervention study we found that smokers across all educational levels benefited from the anti-smoking intervention, and that the intervention did not increase the social inequality in smoking, as one could have feared.

Understanding the high-tech industrial agglomeration from a spatial-spillover perspective is essential for cities to gain economic and technological competitive *** with rapid urbanization and the development of fast transportation networks,socioeconomic interactions between cities have been ever-increasing,traditional spatial metrics are not enough to describe actual inter-city ***-skilled labor flow between cities strongly influences the high-tech industrial agglomeration,yet receives less *** exploiting unique large-scale datasets and tools from complex network and data mining,the authors construct an inter-city high-skilled labor flow network,which was integrated into spatial econometric *** regression results indicate that spatial-spillover effects exist in the development of high-tech industries in the Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration ***,the spatial-spillover effects are stronger among cities with a higher volume of high-skilled labor flows than among cities with just stronger geographic ***,the authors investigate the channels for the spillover effects and discover that inadequate local government expenses on science and technology likely hamper the high-tech industrial agglomeration,so does the inadequate local educational *** increasing foreign direct investments in one city likely encourages the high-tech industrial agglomeration in other cities because of the policy inertia toward traditional industries.

By using the variation coefficient,Gini coefficient and Theil coefficient,this paper makes preliminary exploration of temporalspatial change features and driving mechanism for regional differences of domestic tourism in China from 1995 to *** to the results,we drew the following conclusions:(1)The regional difference of domestic tourism in China tends to be narrowing generally,and is less than that of inbound tourism,playing an important role in narrowing the overall gap of regional tourism in China.(2)The regional internal difference features:inter-provincial difference in the eastern region and difference among the eastern,central and western regions are comparatively obvious and demonstrate a significantly shrinking tendency,the change tendency is consistent with the change tendency of overall difference and exercises a decisive role in overall difference,whereas the inter-provincial difference in the central and western regions is small and relatively stable,having less influence on the overall difference.(3)The temporal-spatial change in regional difference is featured by:low-level provinces occupy a majority and are concentrated in the central and western regions,showing a tendency of narrowing difference;high-level provinces are concentrated in the eastern region,showing a tendency of spreading to the central and western regions;spatial pattern of regional difference demonstrates 4 types,i.e."proliferation type","polarization type","quiescence type"and"collapse type."(4)The driving force for regional difference of domestic tourism in China comes down to 3 aspects:regional socio-economic attribute,regional transport accessibility level and regional development policy.

Based on statistical mechanics for classical fluids,general expressions for hydrodynamic stress in inhomogeneous colloidal suspension are derived on a molecular *** result is exactly an extension of the Iving-Kirkwood stress for atom fluids to colloidal suspensions where dynamic correlation *** is found that besides the inter-particle distance,the obtained hydrodynamic stress depends closely on the velocity of the colloidal particles in the suspension,which is responsible for the appearance of the solvent-mediated hydrodynamic *** to Brady’s stresslets for the bulk stress,our results are applicable to inhomogeneous suspension,where the inhomogeneity and anisotropy of the dynamic correlation should be taken into *** the near-field regime where the packing fraction of colloidal particles is high,our results can reduce to those of ***,our results are applicable to the suspensions with low,moderate,or even high packing fraction of colloidal particles.

This study analyzed the tissue indices,proximate composition,fatty acid and amino acid composition of edible tissues of male *** under three feeding modes(formulated diets(FD),natural diets(ND),and traditional diets(TD)).The results showed that different feeding modes had no impacts on the overall gonadal development,as no significant difference was found in gonadsomatic index among three *** edible yield,three modes all had similar levels of the meat yield,hepatosomatic index,and total edible *** different feeding modes did not affect the individual edible yield and gonadal development,significant differences were detected in the nutritional composition of males from three *** proximate composition,significant differences were found in the total lipids of gonads and the carbohydrate of hepatopancreas and *** fatty acids,crabs from ND had a higher proportion of monounsaturated fatty *** gonads and hepatopancreas,FD had a higher proportion of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty *** amino acids,FD had higher amino acid contents,while ND had the *** tryptophan,the essential amino acids scores of the meat were all greater than *** there was no significant difference on meat quality and meat yields between three feeding modes,this study suggests that the formulated diet could replace the natural diet and traditional diet towards sustainable crab farming in future.
