Exclusion of tourist species from assemblages in ecological studies:a methodological approach using spiders

Background:the exclusion of tourist species from samples is important to avoid bias in community ***,in practice,this is a very difficult *** commonly used methods by researchers,when the habitat of the species is not known,have several shortcomings:first,they exclude not only pseudo-rare species but also genuinely rare species;second,the results obtained with those methods depend on the abundance of the sampling;and third,they follow very subjective *** aims of this study were:(i)to propose a methodology to detect and exclude habitat-tourist species from the database used to carry out analyses in community ecology studies,(ii)to evaluate how the presence of habitat-tourist species affects the richness estimates,and(iii)to assess the effect of including juvenile spiders in the detection of tourist species and the effect of removing them from the richness ***:When the adult+juvenile dataset was considered,twenty-one habitat-tourist species were detected:8 in forest foliage,11 in forest leaf litter,and 2 in *** habitat-tourist species were considered with this dataset,richness overestimation was significant in foliage and in leaf litter,and the final slopes of the richness estimation curves were significantly steeper in leaf *** only the adult dataset was considered,eight habitat-tourist species were detected:3 in forest foliage,4 in forest leaf litter,and just one in *** inclusion of habitat-tourist species in this dataset showed an overestimation of richness,but this was not ***:the proposed methodology contributes to solving the problem of tourist species,which was recognized as one of the great problems in biodiversity *** study showed that common estimators overestimate species richness when habitat-tourist species are included,leading to erroneous ***,this research showed that the inclusion of juveniles(***)could improve the analysis outputs be

Geomechanical model for a seismically active geothermal field:Insights from the tinguiririca volcanic-hydrothermal system

In this work,we develop a multidisciplinary approach to investigate a geothermal system located at the volcanic arc of a subduction-related orogen and highlight the interplay between active *** field and fluid *** using results of field investigations from the tinguiririca geothermal field in the High Andes of Chile(35°S),empirical analysis,and numerical models of static stress variations,we proposed a geomechanical model for evaluating the distribution of hydrothermal manifestations in a seismically-active *** present geomechanical model follows four major steps:(1)development of the 3 D structural model of fault pattern;(2)estimation of the in-situ stress field;(3)calculation of the resolved-shear-to-normal-stress ratio(slip tendency)on each fault with varying geomechanical parameters(coefficient of friction,pore pressure and cohesion)as inputs;and(4)estimation of Coulomb static stress changes as a consequence of failure in a nearby *** combination of all these analyses,we characterize in detail both the active deformation in the geothermal field and its relationship with hot fluid migration.

Mesozoic and Cenozoic microbiotas from eastern Antarctic Peninsula: adaptation to a changing palaeoenvironment

A compiled selected literature on some groups of microfossils of the Mesozoic and Cenozoic of the James Ross Basin,eastern Antarctic Peninsula,is presented here,in order to show how the microbiota has been modified over time,triggered by environmental *** analyzed microfossils consist of palynomorphs(mostly pollen grains,spores,and dinoflagellate cysts),foraminifers and *** cysts and pollen-spores have been recorded in Jurassic to Pleistocene sedimentary *** cysts proved to be good indicators for productivity and/or nutrient availability,surface water temperature and chemistry,the position of ancient shorelines and paleoceanographic *** and spores allowed reconstruction of floral community and thus characterization of the climate that prevailed on the ***,recovered from the Lower Cretaceous to the Pleistocene sedimentary rocks,provided information about the bathymetry,showing different marine settings(e.g.,coastal,inner neritic,outer neritic,upper bathyal)in different *** bryozoan record is restricted to the *** colonial growth-forms reflect several environmental conditions such as shallow waters with a low rate of sedimentation,hard substrate and moderate or strong current action for the analyzed *** study of the Antarctic ecosystems based on the fossil microbiota and their response to the climate and the continental configuration changes,allowed understanding of the composition and dynamics of the polar environments,which have an important role in the Earth climate.
