Assessment of the exploitable biomass of thread herring(Opisthonema spp.)in northwestern Mexico

In recent years,the small pelagic fishery on the Pacific northwest coast of Mexico has significantly increased fishing pressure on thread herring Opisthonema *** fishery is regulated using a precautionary approach(acceptable biological catch(ABC)and minimum catch size).However,due to fishing dynamics,fish aggregation habits and increased fishing mortality,periodic biomass assessments are necessary to estimate ABC and assess the resource *** Catch-MSy approach was used to analyze historical series of thread herring catches off the western Baja California Sur(BCS,1981–2018)and the Gulf of California(GC,1972–2018)to estimate exploitable biomass and target reference points in order to obtain catch *** to the results,in GC,the maximum biomass reached in 1972(at the beginning of fishery)and minimum biomass reached in 2015;the estimated exploitable biomass for 2019 was 42.2×10^(4) t;and the maximum sustainable yield(MSy)was 15.4×10^(4) *** the western BCS coast,the maximum biomass was reached in 1981(at the beginning of fishery)and minimum biomass was reached in 2017;the estimated exploitable biomass for 2019 was 3.2×10^(4) t;and the MSy was 1.2×10^(4) *** stocks showed a decrease in biomass over the past years and were currently near to point of full *** results suggest that the use of the Catch-MSy method is suitable to obtain annual biomass estimates,in order to establish an ABC,to know the current state of the resource,and to avoid overcoming the potential recovery of the stocks.

Latitudinal pattern of the thermal sensitivity of running speed in the endemic lizard Liolaemus multimaculatus

Physiological performance in lizards may be affected by climate across latitudinal or altitudinal *** the coastal dune barriers in central-eastern Argentina,the annual maximum environmental temperature decreases up to 2℃ from low to high latitudes,while the mean relative humidity of the air decreases from 50%to 25%.Liolaemus multimaculatus,a lizard in the family Liolaemidae,is restricted to these coastal *** investigated the locomotor performance of the species at 6 different sites distributed throughout its range in these dune *** inquired whether locomotor performance metrics were sensitive to the thermal regime attributable to *** thermal performance breadth increased from 7%to 82%with latitude,due to a decrease in its critical thermal minimum of up to 5℃ at higher *** from high latitude sites showed a thermal optimum,that is,the body temperature at which maximum speed is achieved,up to 4℃lower than that of lizards from the low *** relatively low temperatures,the maximum running speed of high-latitude individuals was faster than that of low-latitude *** parameters of locomotor performance were labile,decreasing as a function of *** results show populations of *** adjust thermal physiology to cope with local climatic *** suggests that thermal sensitivity responds to the magnitude of latitudinal fluctuations in environmental temperature.

Scale dependency of Liolaemus lizards＇ home range in response to different environmental variables

Animal habitat-use patterns cannot be isolated from scale issues. Consequently, multi-scale studies provide a complete characterization of ecological patterns that can further explain the observed variation. Liolaemus constitutes the world＇s second most speciose lizard genus. In this study, we assessed the relationships between home range size and environmental variables at 3 different spatial scales. The study at a local and regional scale was focused on the habitat specialist Liolaemus multimaculatus. The lizard＇s home range was calculated using the minimum convex polygon method in populations from grassland sites of the coastal sand dunes of the Argentinean Pampas under 2 different conditions, with or without forestations of Acacia Iongifolia. On the other hand, at a geographical scale we considered the evolutionary implications of 20 species of Liolaemus. Home range size, phylogeny, ecological, environmental, and climatic data were ob- tained from the literature and remote sensing. L. multimaculatus home range varied from 12.66 to 570.00 m. Regionally, this species had smaller home ranges in forested habitats （X： 94.02 m2） com- pared with the non-forested sites （X： 219.78m2）. Habitat structure, vegetation types, and food availability would explain the space use at finer scales. When the 20 species of Liolaernus were considered, high mean air temperature and broad thermal amplitudes showed an inverse relationship with home range size. Neither net primary productivity nor phylogeny was good predictors for home range variation at geographical scale. This study highlights the scale dependence of the explicative capability of a set of environmental and intrinsic variables on home range patterns.

The characterization of digestive enzymes presents in fish and their potential biotechnological uses is a well-developed and studied ***,there has not been a systematic review that analyzes the state of knowledge of these enzymes at a global ***,a systematic literature search on three platforms was carried out to review and analyze existing knowledge about digestive enzymes of marine fishes from fisheries and aquaculture and their potential application in industrial *** the PRISMA method for selecting journal manuscripts,we found 112 scientific articles published between 1984 and 2020 studying different digestive enzymes from 87 fish *** studies were carried out in Tunisia and Mexico and only 6 articles were published in South American *** most studied digestive enzymes were alkaline proteases,mainly trypsin,and the proposed uses for these enzymes were mainly as additives in commercial *** is a vacancy in the characterization of other digestive enzymes as pepsins,lipases and amylases and the study of species that are distributed in the Southwest Atlantic *** is necessary to expand the knowledge about other digestive enzymes and to carry out new studies in regions with an important fishery development.

Hydraulic Jump in the Gulf of California

Acoustic Doppler current profiles and water density profiles were measured over the 280 m deep continental slope of the Gulf of California to elucidate the bathymetric effect on zooplankton distribution. These measurements were combined with water velocity and density simulations from the Regional Ocean Model System with and without the influence of Coriolis acceleration. The data revealed an acceleration of the near-bottom flow as it moved toward increasing depths. This acceleration was produced by the adjustment of the isopycnals to bathymetry (hydraulic jump). Zooplankton patches moved downward at the continental slope and then upward, thus exhibiting wave patterns. Model outputs without the effect of Coriolis acceleration also suggested that vertical zooplankton concentration followed a wave pattern. However, when Coriolis acceleration was added to the momentum equation, the horizontal zooplankton distribution was enhanced, which reduced the vertical zooplankton concentration observed over irregular bathymetries. Coriolis acceleration was responsible for horizontal dispersal of up to 20% of the total zooplankton concentration located over the wave trough.

Two years of Oceanographic and Meteorological Data from the UNAM Buoy Anchored at Socorro Island in the Mexican Pacific

The paper analyzes oceanographic and meteorological data registered by an oceanographic buoy in the Mexican Pacific. In 2005 the Marine Science and Limnology Institute of the National Autonomous University of Mexico moored an oceanographic buoy off the coast of Socorro Island in the Mexican Pacific that transmitted data hourly from July 11, 2005 to November 15, 2007. The buoy recorded oceanographic (current speed and direction, conductivity, temperature, salinity, density, turbidity, pH, fluorescence, sea level, waves, and tides) and meteorological (wind speed and direction, temperature, relative humidity, and pressure) data. Linear spectral analysis and wavelet analysis revealed annual, seasonal, and biweekly frequencies, as well as frequencies associated with the main tidal components, and those corresponding with inertial oscillations and Madden-Julian oscillations.

Isotopic niche provides an insight into the ecology of a symbiont during its geographic expansion

The study of the recent colonization of a symbiont and its interaction with host communities in new locations is an opportunity to understand how they *** use of isotopic ratios in trophic ecology can provide measurements of a species'isotopic niche,as well as knowledge about how the isotopic niches between symbiont and host species *** isotope measurements were used to assess the sources of carbon assimilated by the host species(the bivalves Mytilus galloprovincialis and Scrobicularia plana)and their associated symbiont pea crab Afropinnotheres monodi,which occurs within these bivalves'mantle *** mixing model estimates suggest that all of them assimilate carbon from similar sources,particularly from pseudofaeces and particulate organic matter in this symbiotic system based on filter *** symbiotic species occupy comparable trophic levels and its association seems to be commensal or parasitic depending on the duration of such *** pea crab *** reflects a sex-specific diet,where males are more generalist than the soft females because the latter's habitat is restricted to the host *** high isotopic overlap between soft females and *** may reflect a good commensal relationship with the host.

Marine mammals undergo cycles of tissue ischemia and reperfusion during the dive *** injury can result in oxidative tissue damage and the activation of a pro-inflammatory immune *** risk of oxidative damage is reduced by *** hypothesis is that the reported higher antioxidant defenses within marine mammal tissues provide additional protection in situations that produce oxidative stress,like inflammation,in comparison to terrestrial mammal *** were isolated from the whole blood of Pacific bottlenose dolphins(Tursiops truncatus gilli)and humans(Homo sapiens)and were exposed to lipopolysaccharides(LPS,10μg/mL)in vitro to simulate a pro-inflammatory *** stress indicators,including superoxide radical(O_(2)^(•−))production,activities of superoxide dismutase(SOD),catalase(CAT),glutathione peroxidase(GPx),glutathione reductase(GR),and glutathione S-transferase(GST),as well as oxidative protein damage,were quantified by *** 48 h under experimental conditions,bottlenose dolphin leukocytes produced 1.9 times more O_(2)^(•−)but displayed 2.0 times lower protein carbonyl concentrations compared to human *** 48 h under experimental conditions,bottlenose dolphin leukocytes displayed 7.9,2.0,11.1,and 3.3 times more activities of CAT,GPx,GR,and GST,respectively,compared to human *** results suggest that,under cell culture conditions,the antioxidant defenses in bottlenose dolphin leukocytes provide additional protection against pro-inflammatory challenges in comparison to human leukocytes,likely as an adaptive advantage.

The survey of new benthic substrata is expected to yield new records of diatom taxa. A particular type of substratum is the skin of the Stone scorpionfish Scorpaena mystes Jordan & Starks, 1895 that, because of its benthic form of life, represents a potential colonizing surface for various organisms, including epizoic and opportunistic diatom taxa (epibiotic community). Thus, a floristic survey of diatoms was carried out by sampling the epibiotic community from S. mystes specimens collected in the east coast of Baja California Sur (Gulf of California). Thirty diatoms are new records for Mexican littorals. Twelve of these taxa had not been hitherto recorded for American coasts. Micrographs, and morphometric and distribution data on these taxa are provided.

A Geometric Morphometrics Study of Stigma-Anther Polymorphism in the Tropical Distylous <i>Palicourea padifolia</i>(Rubiaceae)

Distyly is a floral polymorphism with long-styled flowers and short-styled flowers. Traditionally, floral traits in distylous species have been studied as a variable composed of several linear measurements. We proposed the use of a geometric morphometric approach to studying flower shape and entire flower design variation (including stigma-anther polymorphism) between morphs in Palicourea padifolia. The geometric morphometric approach allowed us to preserve the integrity of the floral form and to project the floral features on the same scale. Moreover, the visualization of a grid deformation allows us to describe shape differences between morphs as well as to estimate the variance-covariance matrix among floral traits. In this study, we demonstrated that flower shape and entire flower design differed between morphs. Intra- and inter-morph variations in the flower size were observed. The flower size has an effect on the anther position between morphs and among individuals. An association between flower shape and flower size was observed in both morphs. A pattern of floral features co-variation between the morphs was demonstrated in the species. In P. padifolia both morphs seemed to be internally coherent with respect to the developmental processes that produce flower shape variation. Changes in floral traits associated with flower size seemed to be more complex than those in the simple uniform expansion of the floral trait positions analogous between morphs. The observed pattern of co-variation of floral features between morphs suggested that flower base shape would be an additionally ancillary trait linked to the stigma-anther polymorphism in the species.
