Influence of breakup on elastic and α-production channels in the ^6Li＋^116Sn reaction

The effects of breakup reactions on elastic and α-production channels for the ^6Li＋^116Sn system have been investigated at energies below and near the Coulomb barrier. The angular distributions of α-particle production differential cross sections have been obtained at several projectile energies between 22 and 40 MeV. The measured breakup α-particle differential cross sections and elastic scattering angular distributions have been compared with the predictions of continuum-discretized coupled channels（CDCC） calculations. The influence of breakup coupling has also been investigated by extracting dynamic polarization potentials（DPP） from the CDCC calculations. From the predictions of CDCC calculations the relative importance of the nuclear, Coulomb, and total breakup contributions have also been investigated. The nuclear breakup couplings are observed to play an important role in comparison to the Coulomb breakup for the direct breakup mechanisms associated in the reaction of ~6Li projectile with ^（116）Sn target nuclei. The influence of strong nuclear breakup coupling exhibits suppression in the Coulomb-nuclear interference peak. The direct breakup cross sections from the CDCC calculations under-predict the measured α-particle differential cross sections at all energies. This suggests that the measured α particles may also have contributions from other possible breakup reaction channels.

This work reports detergents production using biological surfactants, microbiologically synthesized, and compares its foaming power and emulsification capacity to those presented by a petroleum based surfactant. Both used microorganisms were capable to produce surfactants, been able to emulsify oil/water mixtures and cause decrease of surface tension of water. The biosurfactant produced from Yarrowia lipolytica has a critical micelle concentration lower than that obtained from Pseudomonas aeruginosa (10 and 30 mg·L-1, respectively), but the later showed better results in foaming power and emulsification experiments, similar to the synthetic detergent.

This case study reports the successful outcome of horizontal root fractures of two different patients, which took place in permanent incisors. Report 1 describes a case of a 29-year-old patient who suffered a mandibular trauma affecting mainly the lower central incisors, caused by a car accident. A panoramic radiograph was taken right after the accident and showed a horizontal root fracture in the middle third of tooth 42, which went untreated. Report 2 illustrates a case of a 17-year-old male patient who searched for orthodontic therapy and the periapical radiograph showed horizontal root fracture in tooth 11 caused by a previous trauma, which went untreated as well. There was healing through the reestablishment of pulp activity and dental coloration without professional intervention.

Healthcare Professionals’ Adherence to Contact Precautions at a Maternal and Child Teaching Hospital

Background: Healthcare-associated infections affect hundreds of millions of patients worldwide. Children have greater susceptibility to healthcare-associated infections due to the immaturity of their immune system. Contact precautions aim to promote safety, protection and prevention of contamination. Thus, the objective of this study was to verify adherence to contact precaution measures, as well as compliance to the use of personal protective equipment. Methods: This cross-sectional observational study was carried out from July to october 2019 using a checklist to evaluate health professionals’ adherence to hand hygiene procedures and the use of gloves and surgical gowns when assisting children on contact precautions. Results: A total of 941 observations were carried out in a total of 300.532 hours. Hand hygiene was performed before and after contact with the patient in 58.84% and 75.09% of the cases, respectively and a surgical gown was used in 86.40% of the cases. The use of gloves was the variable most adhered to by professionals (87.57%). Intensive care unit professionals were the care workers who most complied with the regulation regarding hand hygiene after contact with the patient (p = 0.009) and the use of the surgical gown (p orrect hand hygiene technique was the recommendation with least adherence. Non-compliance to the hand hygiene technique was statistically significant among intensive care unit professionals (p = 0.002). Conclusions: Adherence to hand hygiene before contact with the patient and compliance with the hand hygiene technique were neglected by most professionals. However, there was good adherence to the use of surgical gloves and gowns, as well as high compliance to the techniques of removing these items. .

Acute kidney injury(AKI)and electrolyte disorders are important complications of hospitalized coronavirus disease 2019(CoVID-19)patients.AKI is thought to occur due to multiple pathophysiological mechanisms,such as multiple organ dysfunction(mainly cardiac and respiratory),direct viral entry in the renal tubules,and cytokine release syndrome.AKI is present in approximately one in every ten hospitalized CoVID-19 patients.The incidence rates of AKI increase in patients who are admitted to the intensive care unit(ICU),with levels higher than 50%.Additionally,renal replacement therapy(RRT)is used in 7%of all AKI cases,but in nearly 20%of patients admitted to an ICU.CoVID-19 patients with AKI are considered moderate-to-severe cases and are managed with multiple interdisciplinary conducts.AKI acts as a risk factor for mortality in severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection,especially when RRT is needed.Electrolyte disorders are also common manifestations in hospitalized CoVID-19 patients,mainly hyponatremia,hypokalemia,and hypocalcemia.Hyponatremia occurs due to a combination of syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone and gastrointestinal fluid loss from vomiting and diarrhea.When it comes to hypokalemia,its mechanism is not fully understood but may derive from hyperaldosteronism due to renin angiotensin aldosterone system overstimulation and gastrointestinal fluid loss as well.The clinical features of hypokalemia in CoVID-19 are similar to those in other conditions.Hypocalcemia is the most common electrolyte disorder in CoVID-19 and seems to occur because of vitamin D deficiency and parathyroid imbalance.It is also highly associated with longer hospital and ICU stay.

Fruits from fig tree (Ficus carica L.) are economically important worldwide, and rank among the top 20 fruits exported by Brazil. However, due to particular features in its floral structure, classical plant breeding procedures that involve hybridization are not possible. Thus, genetic improvement of figs by using mutagens is an important line of research. In this study, five fig selections based on their interesting agronomic features were used. Genetic modifications associated with mutations were not detected by molecular markers. Therefore, it was suggested that certain phenotypes could have resulted from epigenetic modifications. The best characterized epigenetic modification is DNA methylation, which can switch genes on or off by acting as a signal. After epigenetic polymorphisms were identified by methylation sensitive amplified polymorphism (MSAP) molecular markers, we quantified the level of DNA methylation in fig selections irradiated with gamma rays and compared it to levels in the commercial cultivar “Roxo-de-Valinhos.” This was achieved by analyzing the global methylation using an Imprint Methylated DNA Quantification kit. The results showed that there were significant differences in global methylation following different treatments, indicating that irradiation was an abiotic factor that could alter the epigenome of plants. Since the material used as a control was also found to be methylated, demethylation of the polymorphic genomic material might account for the phenotypic variations observed among different treatment groups. These results suggest that irradiation is an external factor that is capable of altering epigenetic patterns.

objective:To study the behavioral effects of semi purified fraction prepared from the stem bark of Erythrina velutina on mice.Methods:Three chloroformic fractions(CA) at 50 or 100 mg/kg(CA1,CA2 and CA3) were tested in two behavioral tests;plus maze and open field.Results:In the plus maze test,it was observed a decrease in the number of entries in the closed arms(NECA) CA2 at both doses as compared to the control group.In the open field test,CA2 and CA3 fractions decreased the number of squares crossed and the time of permanence on the bar,increased the number of falls at both doses in the rota rod test.The CA2 fraction decreased the NECA,but this data did not characterize an anxiolytic effect.It was the consequence from decrease of locomotor activity(LA) observed in the open field test,that the decrease of LA and rearing,the number of falls and the decrease in time of permanence on the bar in rota rod test were observed after treatment with CA2 and CA3 at both doses,suggesting sedative effect.Conclusion:The present work demonstrated that CA2 and CA3 fractions have impairing effect on LA and motor coordination.

We recognize the chemical composition of the acetonic extract of Rhizophora mangle barks(AERM)using mass spectrometry analysis[liquid chromatography(LC)–ESI–IT-MS/MS and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight-MS(MALDI-ToF)].Analgesic activity was evaluated by formalin and tail-flick experimental assays.Anti-inflammatory activity was performed by paw edema test induced by carrageenan and 48/80 compounds.The first series of experiments involved[LC]–FIA–IT-MS/MS with 11 separated catechins derivatives until degree of polymerization 3(DP3).The spectra obtained by MALDI-ToF analysis of the AERM presented two homologous series:one based on polymers of m/z 288 da increments(up to DP12)and another series based on polymers of m/z[288?162]da increments(up to DP11).In addition to these series of flavan-3-ol,each DP had a subset of masses with a variation of-16 da(homologous series of afzelechins-m/z 873–3465 da)and +16 da(homologous series of gallocatechins-m/z 905–3497 da).A similar pattern with homologous series of gallocatechins and afzelechins could also be observed for a fifth and a sixth monohexoside series:glucogallocatechins(m/z 779–3371)and glucoafzelechins(m/z 747–3339).The intraperitoneal administration of different doses of AERM(50,150 and 300 lg mL^(-1))have a morphine-like effect and intense anti-inflammatory activity.
