Touristic urbanization and greening of coastal dune fields:A long-term assessment of a temperate sandy barrier of Argentina

Dune barrier systems represent highly sought-after coastal landscapes for tourism and urban development around the world. However, a century ago, they were considered hazardous environments due to their great dynamic nature. As a result, stabilization practices were considered necessary. The systematic introduction of fast-growing exotic trees helped stabilize the sand, making it easier for tourism urbanization to take place, but also leading to erosion processes. This paper aims to assess long-term changes in vegetation cover over a large temperate barrier in Argentina. This complex region includes urban resorts, afforestation zones, and protected areas. A GIS-based geospatial analysis was conducted using a large satellite database(> 350 images), and the future evolution of the vegetation was modeled. The results revealed two primary spatiotemporal patterns associated with a gradual expansion of vegetation cover, accompanied by a concurrent reduction in sandy areas. In 1986, the dune area comprised 75% more surface than vegetation, whereas in 2021, it represented 60% less than vegetation. Furthermore, the 2050 scenario suggests a potential 40% reduction of dunes in certain areas. It is necessary to enhance management actions aimed at maintaining dune mobility and ensuring local and regional sediment balance. Long-term management strategies must focus on restoring native plant communities and controlling invasive species, and avoiding new dune fixation initiatives based on the introduction of exotic species.

Natural sediment at a dam and its inorganic materials as adsorbents of praseodymium(Pr(Ⅲ))

The sediment deposited behind a dam(DS) and its inorganic materials(IM-DS) were characterized and used for the removal of praseodymium(Pr) from aqueous solutions. Quartz, albite, and kaolinite were found in the sediment by X-ray diffraction. Kinetic data fit well to a pseudo second-order model, the equilibrium time for DS and IM-DS was 2 h and 3 min, respectively, and the adsorption capacity was higher for Pr/DS(qe= 4.91 mg/g) than for Pr/IM-DS(qe= 3.01 mg/g) in these conditions. Pr/DS and Pr/IM-DS data isotherms were in agreement with the Langmuir-Freundlich model and the maximum adsorption capacities were 4.95 and 4.01 mg/g, respectively. Both processes are exothermic(enthalpy change, ΔH0=-22.8 and-21.8 k J/mol for DS and IM-DS, respectively), the increase of the randomness is small, and the feasibility and spontaneity are low. Praseodymium was desorbed by ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium(EDTA-Na2), sodium chloride, nitric, citric, and humic acids solutions, and one hundred percent of praseodymium was desorbed by the EDTA-Na2solution. The Pr2(EDTA)3(praseodymium ethylenediaminetetraacetate) complex was completely desorbed from both materials(DS and IM-DS). Distribution coefficients(KD) depend upon praseodymium concentration,temperature, p H, and the kind of adsorbent. Chemical reactions of praseodymium with kaolinite and iron minerals could explain the adsorption.

Novel electrode structure in a DBD reactor applied to the degradation of phenol in aqueous solution

Phenol degradation experimental results are presented in a similar wastewater aqueous solution using a non-thermal plasma reactor in a coaxial dielectric barrier discharge. The novelty of the work is that one of the electrodes of the reactor has the shape of a hollow screw which shows an enhanced efficiency compared with a traditional smooth structure. The experimentation was carried out with gas mixtures of 90% Ar-10% O2, 80% At-20% 02 and 0% Ar-100% 02. After one hour of treatment the removal efficiency was 76%, 92%, and 97%, respectively, assessed with a gas chromatographic mass spectrometry technique. For both reactors used, the ozone concentration was measured. The screw electrode required less energy, for all gas mixtures, than the smooth electrode, to maintain the same ozone concentration. On the other hand, it was also observed that in both electrodes the electrical conductivity of the solution changed slightly from ,-0.0115 S m^-1 up to -0.0430 S m^-1 after one hour of treatment. The advantages of using the hollow screw electrode structure compared with the smooth electrode were：（1） lower typical power consumption, （2） the generation of a uniform plasma throughout the reactor benefiting the phenol degradation, （3） a relatively lower temperature of the aqueous solution during the process, and （4） the plasma generation length is larger.

Adsorption of cobalt by using inorganic components of sediment samples from water bodies

The adsorption of cobalt ions was evaluated using sediment samples from water bodies to investigate the adsorption properties of sediment and the behavior of these natural materials in the presence of nuclear and industrial waste. The two sediments(S1 and S2) were treated to eliminate humic and fulvic acids and then they were characterized by several techniques. The minerals found in both the sediments(X-ray diffraction) were quartz and albite; plus, goethite and muscovite in S1, and kaolinite and montmorillonite in S2. Point of zero charge(PZC) of S1 and S2 was 6.00 and 5.22, respectively. The specific area of S1(63.3 m2/g) is higher than S2(1.5 m2/g). Adsorption kinetics data for S1 and S2 were best fitted to the pseudo second-order model. The removal efficiency of S1 for cobalt was 96% with an adsorption capacity(qe) of 0.93 mg/g, and for S2 was 45% with a qeof 0.40 mg/g. The experimental data of the adsorption isotherms were adjusted to Langmuir and Freundlich models for S1 and S2, respectively. The thermodynamic parameters(enthalpy, entropy, and Gibb’s free energy) indicated that the adsorption processes were endothermic, spontaneous, and chemisorption mechanism. The results show that the adsorption capacities of the sediments depend on their composition. These water sediments have important adsorption properties for cobalt, and they can be used in the treatment of nuclear and industrial aqueous wastes.

Transcriptomic responses to drought stress in the Patagonian southern beech Nothofagus alpina

Background deciphering the genetic architecture of drought tolerance could allow the candidate genes identification responding to water stress. In the Andean Patagonian forest, the genus Nothofagus represents an ecologically relevant species to be included in different genomic studies. These studies are scarce in South American ecosystems however represent an important source of genomic data in order to interpret future climate-change environment scenarios of these emblematic forests. Here, we achieved the assemblage of the transcriptome of N. alpina while searching for key genes of activated or suppressed metabolic pathways in response to drought *** de novo transcriptome assembly resulted in 104,030 transcripts. Following confirmation of drought conditions, based on reduction of leaf water potential and stomatal conductance, a differential gene expression analysis resulted in 2720 significantly expressed genes(1601 up-regulated and 1119 down-regulated). Enrichment analysis(over-representation analysis and gene set enrichment analysis) resulted in more than one hundred stress-responsive term ontologies(i.e. biological processes) and pathways. Terms such as response to abscisic acid and pathways such as plant hormone signal transduction or starch and sucrose metabolism were over-represented. Protein–protein interaction assessment resulted in networks with significantly expressed top common hub gene clusters(e.g. planttype cell wall biogenesis among down-regulated or ABA-signalling among up-regulated). These networks evidenced important regulators at gene expression such as transcriptional *** Responses of N. alpina seedlings to drought stress were evidenced by the activation of several genes linked to GO biological processes and KEGG pathways, which were mainly based on over-expression of specific protein kinases, phosphatases, synthases and transcription factors. A new configuration of a resonant full-bridge flying capacitor multicell inverter has been designed and constructed with the aim of achieving an extended output voltage frequency range with low harmonic distortion and reduced semiconductor commutation losses. This configuration was tested as a power supply for two different coaxial dielectric barrier discharge reactors, one of them employed for electric characterization and the other one for inorganic compound elimination in an aqueous solution. Two different gas mixtures, 90% Ar-10% 02 and 80% Ar-20% 02, were individually supplied during the experiments; the results showed a high- efficiency removal of meta-cresol （m-cresol） to the order of 98%, which was obtained by adding more oxygen to the plasma gas mixture.

Trimetazidine:Is it a promising drug for use in steatotic grafts?

AIM： Chronic organ-donor shortage has led to the acceptance of steatotic livers for transplantation, despite the higher risk of graft dysfunction or nonfunction associated with the ischemic preservation period of these organs. The present study evaluates the effects of trimetazidine （TMZ） on an isolated perfused liver model. METHODS： Steatotic and non-steatotic livers were preserved for 24 h in the University of Wisconsin （UW） solution with or without TMZ. Hepatic injury and function （transaminases, bile production and sulfobromophthalein （BSP） clearance） and factors potentially involved in the susceptibility of steatotic livers to ischemia-reperfusion （I/R） injury, including oxidative stress, mitochondrial damage, microcirculatory diseases, and ATP depletion were evaluated. RESULTS： Steatotic livers preserved in UW solution showed higher transaminase levels, lower bile production and BSP clearance compared with non-steatotic livers. Alterations in perfusion flow rate and vascular resistance, mitochondrial damage, and reduced ATP content were more evident in steatotic livers. TMZ addition to UW solution reduced hepatic injury and ameliorated hepatic functionality in both types of the liver and protected against the mechanisms potentially responsible for the poor tolerance of steatotic livers to I/R. CONCLUSION： TMZ may constitute a useful approach in fatty liver surgery, limiting the inherent risk of steatotic liver failure following transplantation.

Cadmium sorption by sodium and thiourea-modified zeolite-rich tuffs

In the present investigation, two zeolite-rich tuffs from Guaymas and El Cajon（State of Sonora）, which were conditioned with a sodium chloride solution and subsequently modified with a thiourea solution, were chosen to evaluate the removal of Cd from aqueous systems. The zeolitic materials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The surface area was also determined. The experiments were performed in a batch system, and the influences of p H, contact time between phases, and the concentration of Cd in the solution on the adsorption by sodium or thiourea-modified zeolite-rich tuff were investigated. It was found that the efficiency of Cd ion removal from aqueous solutions is influenced by the p H of the aqueous systems. The Cd adsorption kinetic data were well fitted to a pseudo-second-order model in all cases. The Langmuir and Langmuir–Freundlich isotherms adequately described the Cd sorption behavior by the zeolite from El Cajon pretreated with Na Cl and the zeolite from Guaymas modified with thiourea, respectively.

The global fuel management problem in BWRs(Boiling Water Reactors) can be understood as a very complex optimization problem,where the variables represent design decisions and the quality assessment of each solution is done through a complex and computational expensive *** last aspect is the major impediment to perform an extensive exploration of the design space,mainly due to the time lost evaluating non promising *** this work,we show how we can train a Multi-Layer Perceptron(MLP) to predict the reactor behavior for a given *** trained MLP is able to evaluate the configurations immediately,thus allowing performing an exhaustive evaluation of the possible configurations derived from a stock of fuel lattices,fuel reload patterns and control rods *** our particular problem,the number of configurations is approximately 7.7×10^(10);the evaluation with the core simulator would need above 200 years,while only 100hours were required with our approach to discern between bad and good *** later were then evaluated by the simulator and we confirm the MLP *** good core configurations reached the energy requirements,satisfied the safety parameter constrains and they could reduce uranium enrichment costs.

149Pm, 166Ho, 161Tb and 177Lu conjugated to chemical agents (monoclonal antibodies, polypeptide, etc.) have the appropriate decay characteristics for imaging and therapeutic studies and consequently the potential to be useful in radiotherapy and diagnosis. These carrier-free radioisotopes can be produced by neutron irradiation of a lanthanide target followed by β-?decay, and a posterior radiochemical separation of the daughter radionuclide from macro-amounts of the parent target. In order to produce carrier free 149Pm, 161Tb, 166Ho and 177Lu for radiotherapy, with a radionuclide purity of more than 99.9%, a device production was developed based on separation of Nd/Pm, Gb/Tb, Dy/Ho and Yb/Lu by extraction chromatography.
