Variability in mentum deformities of Tanytarsus larvae(Diptera,Chironomidae)in a metal rich basin in Northern Mexico

Mentum deformities in chironomids have been commonly used as indicators of metal contamination in freshwater ecosystems.Incidence of these deformities suggests sublethal effects and can provide early signals of environmental deterioration.While anthropogenic metal pollution is known to lead to an increase in deformities in chironomids,natural background deformity incidence information is key to their effective use as biomonitoring tools.Here we explore the incidence of deformities from 5000 Tanytarsus(Diptera,Chironomidae)menta in relation to water physicochemical,and sediment metal(Al,As,Cu,Fe,Mn,Pb,Zn)concentration data from numerous sites in the naturally metal-rich Sonora River(NW Mexico)obtained over a two-year period.Higher metal concentrations were found in the upper basin.Higher salinity,total suspended solids and conductivity were found in the lower basin.Only As and Cu were occasionally found above published threshold effect levels(TEL).The proportion of deformities(%D)was low(2.1%)and a generalized linear model only explained 25.36%of%D variability among samples;this model included several physicochemical parameters.The only metal significantly related to deformities was Cu.despite significant spatial and temporal variability in all metal concentrations and other physicochemical parameters in the basin,we were unable to explain a strong relationship between metal concentration and deformity incidence.Our results,based on consistent%D quantification from 5000 samples from a single taxon,suggest that natural variation in metal concentrations,even when statistically significant,is not associated with notable variations in the incidence of deformities.

The use of unmanned aerial vehicles(UAV)for forest monitoring has grown significantly in recent years,providing information with high spatial resolution and temporal versatility.UAV with multispectral sensors allow the use of indexes such as the normalized difference vegetation index(NDVI),which determines the vigor,physiological stress and photo synthetic activity of vegetation.This study aimed to analyze the spectral responses and variations of NDVI in tree crowns,as well as their correlation with climatic factors over the course of one year.The study area encompassed a 1.6-ha site in Durango,Mexico,where Pinus cembroides,Pinus engelmannii,and Quercus grisea coexist.Multispectral images were acquired with UAV and information on meteorological variables was obtained from NASA/POWER database.An ANOVA explored possible differences in NDVI among the three species.Pearson correlation was performed to identify the linear relationship between NDVI and meteorological variables.Significant differences in NDVI values were found at the genus level(Pinus and Quercus),possibly related to the physiological features of the species and their phenology.Quercus grisea had the lowest NDVI values throughout the year which may be attributed to its sensitivity to relative humidity and temperatures.Although the use of UAV with a multispectral sensor for NDVI monitoring allowed genera differentiation,in more complex forest analyses hyperspectral and LiDAR sensors should be integrated,as well other vegetation indexes be considered.

The study of the recent colonization of a symbiont and its interaction with host communities in new locations is an opportunity to understand how they interact.The use of isotopic ratios in trophic ecology can provide measurements of a species'isotopic niche,as well as knowledge about how the isotopic niches between symbiont and host species overlap.Stable isotope measurements were used to assess the sources of carbon assimilated by the host species(the bivalves Mytilus galloprovincialis and Scrobicularia plana)and their associated symbiont pea crab Afropinnotheres monodi,which occurs within these bivalves'mantle cavities.The mixing model estimates suggest that all of them assimilate carbon from similar sources,particularly from pseudofaeces and particulate organic matter in this symbiotic system based on filter feeding.The symbiotic species occupy comparable trophic levels and its association seems to be commensal or parasitic depending on the duration of such association.The pea crab A.monodi reflects a sex-specific diet,where males are more generalist than the soft females because the latter's habitat is restricted to the host bivalve.The high isotopic overlap between soft females and M.galloprovincialis may reflect a good commensal relationship with the host.

Background:Land‑use change frequently affects faunistic populations and communities.To achieve successful conservation strategies,we need suitable information about species distribution and the causes of extinction risk.Many amphibian species depend on riparian vegetation to complete their life cycles.About 41%of amphibian species are globally threatened,and accurate estimations of population size,species richness and the identification of critical habitats are urgently needed worldwide.To evaluate the magnitude of changes in species richness and demography,estimations that include detection probability are necessary.In this study,we employed multi‑species occupancy models to estimate detection probability and the effect of land cover type(i.e.,cropland,artificial pasture,secondary and mature forest)in a 500‑m radius on the occupancy probability and richness of diurnal amphibians in 60 riparian zones in the state of Michoacán in central Mexico.Furthermore,we evaluated the potential of the endemic salamander Ambystoma ordinarium as a flagship species for the conservation of other native amphibian species.Results:We registered a total of 20 amphibian species in the diurnal assemblage,of which 10 species are considered at risk of extinction.We found that cropland was the most important land‑use type for explaining amphibian distribu‑tion in riparian zones,with negative effects on most amphibian species.We found no differences in species richness between zones with and without A.ordinarium.In riparian zones occupied by A.ordinarium,however,we found a higher number of species at risk of extinction.Conclusions:Our findings showed negative effects of croplands on the distribution of most amphibian species.The riparian zones are important for the maintenance of native diurnal amphibian communities and A.ordinarium can act as a flagship species for the conservation of threatened amphibian species.

Relationship between MODIS-NDVI data and wheat yield: A case study in Northern Buenos Aires province, Argentina

In countries like Argentina,whose economy depends heavily on crop production,the estimation of harvests is an elementary requirement.Besides providing objectivity,the use of remote sensing allows estimating yield in advance.Since the time of maximum leaf area in wheat corresponds with the critical period of the crop,a good relationship is expected between the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index(NDVI)and yield.The present study was carried out in the North of Buenos Aires province,Argentina.Based on the type of soil,the study area can be divided into two homogeneous subzones:a subzone with lower clay content in the southwestand a subzone with higher clay content in the northeast.Nine growing seasons(2003–2011)were studied.In the first five years,an empirical model was calibrated and validated with field-observed wheat yields and MOD13q1 product-NDVI data,whereas in the other four years,the calibrated model was applied by means of yield maps and by comparing with official yields.The MOD13q1 image corresponding to Julian day 289 showed the best fit between NDVI and yield to estimate wheat yield early.Through yield maps,better weather conditions showedhigher yields and higher soil productivity presented a greater proportion of the area occupied by higher yields.At department level,an R2 value of 0.75 was found after relating the estimation of the calibrated empirical model with official yields.The method used allows predicting wheat yield 30 days before harvest.Through yield maps,the NDVI perceived the temporal and spatial variability in the study area.

In recent years,there has been an increasing interest in finding sustainable strategies for the efficient removal of contaminants from soils.The objective of this review is to examine the biochemical principles of specific genetic modifications in plants,their applications in the field for specific contaminants as phytotechnologies,and their international regulation.In addition,the review presents some biological aspects of rhizosphere-related phenomena,the interactions of organic and inorganic pollutants with plants,and the performance of the phytotechnologies across the continents.During the last few decades,at least eight genera of genetically modified plants(GMPs)have been tested and used for soil remediation with outstanding results.Arabidopsis,Nicotiana,and Oryza are the plant genera most widely studied.Specific plant genes such as metal transporters,chelators,metallothioneins,phytochelatins,and oxygenases have been transferred to plants to improve the elimination of contaminants in soil.We discuss some important aspects of gene manipulation and its application for removal of diverse contaminants.A key challenge faced by phytotechnologies is the final disposal of the generated biomass,from a safety aspect.We argue that the commercial success of phytotechnologies depends on the generation of valuable biomass on contaminated land and its use for bioenergy generation.The use of such technologies would promote a broader understanding of the importance of plants,especially GMPs,in the environment and their contribution to environmental sustainability.

despite international efforts to limit worker exposure to coal dust,it continues to impact the health of thousands of miners across Europe.Airborne coal dust has been studied to improve risk models and its control to protect workers.Particle size distribution analyses shows that using spraying systems to suppress airborne dusts can reduce particulate matter concentrations and that coals with higher ash yields produce finer dust.There are marked chemical differences between parent coals and relatively coarse deposited dusts(up to _(500)μm,DD_(500)).Enrichments in Ca,K,Ba,Se,Pb,Cr,Mo,Ni and especially As,Sn,Cu,Zn and Sb in the finest respirable dust fractions could originate from:(i)mechanical machinery wear;(ii)variations in coal mineralogy;(iii)coal fly ash used in shotcrete,and carbonates used to reduce the risk of explosions.Unusual enrichments in Ca in mine dusts are attributed to the use of such concrete,and elevated K to raised levels of phyllosilicate mineral matter.Sulphur concentrations are higher in the parent coal than in the DD_(500),probably due to relatively lower levels of organic matter.Mass concentrations of all elements observed in this study remained below occupational exposure limits.

The basin of the former Lake Texcoco is located in the heart of one of the most populous metropolitan areas in the world:Mexico City （MAMC）.However,although the lake is a drying vessel of more than 90%,of their geophysical characteristics has not been completely urbanized,making it the ultimate outdoor space for the overcrowded population of the north-east;but at the same time,it is a considerable source of contamination for periphery-urban area by the large dust storms that are generated.And the amount of toxic substances that flow through their channels of wastewater.To reverse the harmful effects on human health and prevent pollution reaching the aquifer,the National Water Commission （NWC） has established the Lake Texcoco Ecological Park （LTEP）.The purpose of this study was to have a bio-geochemical diagnosis of the LTEP like background information to develop its comprehensive management plan.So,to know the sources of contamination,identify and quantify contaminants in rivers,sediment and soil were analyzed 27 factors LTEP physicochemical under NOM-001-SEMARNAT-1996,there were 11 vertical electrical soundings,33 CT Electrical Resistivity.Three sources of pollution produced by human activities （industrial,urban and agricultural） and two sources of mixed origin （natural-anthropogenic） hypersaline water,salinization of soils and sediment were detected.Several parameters measured far exceed the maximum permissible limits established in NOM-001.We found an effect of soil washing in the crevices of saline soils,being more pronounced at south of the polygon PELT.

Antisana is a stratovolcano with an associated glacier located in the Ecuadorian Andes.Dr Aguirre made meteorological readings every day,at every hour from sunrise to sunset,from december1845 to december 1846,at Antisana using a meteorological station at 4060 mamsl(meters above mean sea level).Unfortunately,only the monthly average data have been preserved.These meteorological data are here studied and compared with the closest modern stations for monthly values of temperature,rainfall,and pressure.According to these comparisons,the year 1846 was rainy and cold in comparison with the current climate.Moreover,these observations have been useful to help resolve a debate about a possible El Ni?o event in 1846 with the high precipitation in Antisana and Quito in 1846 discarding the occurrence of an El Ni?o event.The probable occurrence of a La Ni?a event is discussed.These data are the earliest known systematic instrumental meteorological observations taken at above 4000 mamsl.
