A velocity interferometer system for any reflector (VISAR) is used to measure the sound velocity of LY12 Al shock-compressed to peak pressures of 20, 32, 55 and 71GPa. Unloading wave velocities from these pressures are obtained from the observed particle velocity profiles at the LY12 Al/LiF window interface; and the longitudinal, bulk and shear sound velocities at the initial Hugoniot state are well determined. The histories of stress, strain, density or volume, and particle velocity along the release paths are calculated by the impedance-matching method based on the unloading sound velocity data. It is revealed that the release behaviour of shocked LY12 Al departures obviously from the elastic perfectly-plastic response.

Based on the available data of specific heat Cv at constant volume and the Grüneisen parameter γ of both lattice and electron contributions, we present a consistent method for simultaneously calculating the effective or synthesized Grüneisen parameter along Hugoniot, γeH, covering solid, mixed, and liquid states, and the melting temperature Tm for ε-iron. The rationality validation for this method is confirmed as compared with the experimental data, including the measured Tm and Hugoniot bulk sound velocities Cb. The calculated γeH and Tm for ε-iron at the Earth's inner-core boundary (330GPa) are 1.58 and 5930K, respectively, which are close to the values of 1.53 and 6050K given by Anderson [J. Phys. Chem. Solids 64 (2003) 2125]. This method for determination of γeH could be, in principle, also applicable to any thermodynamic state calculations, e.g., along isothermal and isentropic paths, other than the Hugoniot locus.

We have measured the equation of state for liquid nitrogen compressed dynamically to a pressure of 10-60GPa by employing a two-stage light-gas gun. The data show a continuous phase transition above the shock pressure of 33GPa, as indicated previously by shock wave experiments. A theoretical model has been derived to examine the experimental data by inducing a molecular dissociative fraction. According to theoretical and experimental data the phase transition was thought to be a molecular dissociative phase transition.

A new method is proposed to calculate the Grüneisen parameter directly from the experimental Hugoniot data, without any assumption on the lattice vibrational mode of the material being studied. Compared with the results calculated by the methods proposed previously, the values of the Grüneisen parameter calculated have three distinguishable features that support the rationality of the method. A new phenomenon that the lattice vibrational mode changes with the thermodynamic state of the solid has been first observed from the calculated results, which implies that the material parameter g, characterizing the lattice vibrational mode, is material dependent rather than a material constant.

The electrical conductivity of shock-compressed iron was measured up to 208GPa by using an improved design in experiment assembly in which the iron sample was encapsulated in a single-crystal sapphire cell. High-pressure shock compressions were generated by the plate impact technique with the two-stage light-gas gun. The measured conductivity of iron varies from 1.45×104Ω-1cm-1 at 101GPa and 2010K to 7.65×103Ω-1cm-1 at 208GPa and 5220K. After examining these data together with those reported, we found that the Bloch-Grüneisen expression is still valid at high pressures and temperatures, even up to 208GPa and 5220K, at least for ε-iron, which is significant in the field of condensed matter physics and deep interior earth science.

In this paper, we have numerically solved the multi-fluid problems using an operator-split two-step high-resolution Godunov PPM (parabolic piecewise method) for the flow in complex geometries. By using the front capturing method,the PPM integrator captures the interface in the solution process. The basic multi-fluid integrator is coupled to a Cartesian grid algorithm where a VOF (volume of fluid) representation of the fluid interface is also used. As an application of this method, we test the 2D interfacial advection example and simulate an experimental hypervelocity launcher model from Sandia National Laboratories. The computational design of the hypervelocity launcher is also given in the paper.

The relation between particle velocity Up, up to 4km/s, and shock wave velocity Us in copper has been simulated with ab initio molecular dynamics. The simulated relationship without considering the correction of zero-point and finite temperature effects is Us = 4.23+1.53Up. After considering the correction the relation becomes Us = 4.08+1.53Up, which is consistent with the experimental result.

The fluid variational free energy model is applied to calculate the equation of state (EOS) of the fluid (Ne/3,2He/3) mixtures at 296K. The pair potential is used to describe the He–Ne interaction. The calculated EOSs at 296K are compared with the experiments for solid Ne(He)2. The validity of the potential and the calculated model is verified by comparison. The present model is extended to calculate the equation of state of the fluid He–Ne mixtures with different He:Ne compositions in the pressure 0–160GPa and temperature up to 10000K.
