Preparation and Immunogenicity of Serogroup B Meningococcal OS-OMPC Conjugates

The objective of the present study is to purify oligosaccharides (OSs) from serogroup B meningococci (3407 or 542852) with common lipooligosaccharide (LOS) immunotypes prevalent in China and to successtully conjugate them to their outer membrane protein complexes (OMPCs).Conjugates possessing broad cross-reactivity with different serogroup B meningococci were *** LOSs from the above two strains were purified on a Sephghex G75 column and hydrolyzed with acetic acid, and then the pare OSs were obtained by using a Sephadex G50 chromatographic column. The pure OSs were conjugated to corresponding OMPCs by carbodiimide mediated condensation. Mice were immunized with the OS-OMPC conjugates to produce antibodies. Immunognicities of the conjugates were tested by EUSA, bactericidal test and Western-blotting. The titers of antibodies against OS and LOS elicited by the two OS-OMPC conjugates increased respectively by 2. 5and 2 to 10 times as compared with those of antibodies against unconjugated OS and LOS. The sera elicited by the conjugates possessed a stronger bactericidal activity to the stndus (3407, 542852,29021) with the same LOS immunotype than to the strain with different LOS immunotype (86155).The results determined by ELISA indicated that the sera against the conjugaes showed strong response to the strains with the same or different LOS immunotypes. It was confirmed by westem-blotting analysis that the sera elicited by the two conjugates reacted with 42, 39 and 26 kDa proteins from the OMPC. Among the reactive bands, the 42kDa proteins were class 1 OMPs. The two serogroup B meningococcal OMPCs were strong immunogens and good carriers coupling with OSs as well. The immunogencity of the conjugaed OS was increased and the OS-OMPC conjugates of the serogroup B meogingococci showed a broad antigenic response to the strains tested.

Cohort Study of HIV Infection among Drug Users in Ruili,Longchuan and Luxi of Yunnan Province,China

In March 1992, KAP investigation and HIV blood test were carried out for 860 drug users and 82 spouses in Ruili, Luxi, Longchuan of Yunnan Province, China.The results showed that there were 285 injecting drug users (IDUs) (33.1%) among 860 drug users. Among 282 blood samples of IDUs, the HIV infection rate was 49.0%, highest in Ruili (81.8%, 63/77), then Longchuan (44.6%, 74/166), lowest in Luxi county (5.1 %, 2/39). Twelve new HIV ( +) were found from 75 persons, who had been tested as HIV (-) in recent two years. Sixty-two blood samples were collected among 82 spouses of IDUs with HI V ( + ), and 6 were HIV ( + ) (9.8%), with an increase of 6.7% compared with results of the investigation two years ago (3.1%, 2/64).

The Fourth China National Congress on Medical Virology was held from October 26 to 31, 1993 in Xiamen, Fujian Province. A total of 217 virology workers participated in the congress, which received 312 papers, 82 of which were selected for oral presentations. The plenary session was held on October 27, 1993. Four invited lectures were delivered first, followed by five presentations. The workshops were divided into 3 groups on October 28 and the morning of October *** first group included hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome virus and arboviruses. The second group included enteric viruses, rabies virus and other viruses. The third group incluffed hepatitis viruses and herpes viruses.

Pancreatic cancer mortality in China(1991-2000)

AIM: To describe the mortality rate of pancreatic cancer and its distribution in China during the period of ***: Based on the data of demography and death collected through China′s Disease Surveillance Point System (DSPS) over the period of 1991-2000, the distribution of death rate of pancreatic cancer was described in terms of age group, gender, calendar year, rural/urban residence and administrative ***: A total of 1 619 death cases attributed to pancreatic cancer (975 men and 644 women) were reported by DSPS during 1991-2000. The reported, adjusted and agestandardized mortality rates increased from 1.46, 1.75, and 2.18 per 100 000 populations in 1991 to 2.38, 3.06, and 3.26per 100 000 populations in 2000. The majority (69.62 %) of the deaths of pancreatic cancer were seen in the age group of 60 years and older. The mortality rate was higher in men than in women, but the male to female death rate ratios decreased during the 10 years. Our data also showed that the death rate of pancreatic cancer in urban areas was about 2-4 fold higher than that in rural areas, and in Northeast and East China, the death rates were higher than those in the other 5 administrative ***: The death rate due to pancreatic cancer was rising during the period of 1991-2000 and the peak mortality of pancreatic cancer might arrive in China.

An outbreak of type I Legionnaires' disease (LD) was confirmed etiologically and serologically. The morbidity was 38.2%. No significant correlation was found between incidence and sex, or age, or history of smoking. The case distribution showed a significant degree of housing (p<0.01). The possibility of infection through water and air contamination was eliminated. This paper shows evidence of person-to-person transmission. The infection may affect many body systems and lacks specific symptoms in our 39 LD cases.
