Chemical profiling of Curcuma aeruginosa Roxb. rhizome using different techniques of solvent extraction

Objective:To investigate the possible phytochemical constituents of Curcuma aeruginosa Roxb.(C. aeruginosa) rhizome using two different techniques of direct solvent extraction. Methods: Two different techniques of direct solvent extractions, i.e. methyl tert-butyl ether(MTBE) extraction and two-phase methanol/chloroform(M/C) system, were used in this study. The analysis of the phytochemical constituents in MTBE and M/C extracts was performed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry. The mass spectra of the compounds was matched with the NIST 08 mass spectral library. Results: The present study revealed that the extraction using two-phase M/C have resulted in higher metabolite coverage compared to the extraction with MTBE. Direct solvent extraction using MTBE revealed the presence of 27 compounds; whereas, M/C allowed the extraction of 18 and 36 compounds in polar(methanol) and nonpolar(chloroform) fractions respectively. The major compounds detected in the MTBE extract that based on the peak area percentage were methenolone(16.64%), cycloisolongifolene, 8,9-dehydro-9-formyl-(15.93%), labd-13-en-15-oic acid,8,12-epoxy-12-hydroxy-γ-lactone(10.77%), propiolic acid, 3-(1-hydroxy)-2 isopropyl-1,5-methylcyclohexyl)(7.84%), 4-oxo-β-isodamascol(5.17%), velleral(3.11%) and Z-α-farnesene(2.00%). The most prevailing major compounds identified in the polar fraction of the M/C extraction were α-D glucopyranoside, 1,3,4,6 tetrakis-O-(TMS)(trimethylsilyl)-β-D-fructofuranosyl 2,3,4,6-tetrakis-O-(TMS)-(38.08%), d-glucose, 2,3,4,5,6-pentakis-O-(TMS)-, O-methyloxime(14.61%), D-fructose, 1,3,4,5,6-pentakis-O-(TMS)-, O-methyloxime(5.28%), isocitric acid(TMS)(3.06%), oxalic acid, bis(TMS) ester(2.96%), hexadecanoic acid, TMS ester(2.16%), citric acid, ethyl ester, tri-TMS(1.91%) and butanedioic acid, [(TMS) oxy]-, bis(TMS) ester(1.14%); whereas in the nonpolar extract, among the major compounds detected were cycloisolongifolene, 8, 9-dehydro-9-formyl(15.70%), propioli

The contribution of phytoliths to total biogenic silica(BSi) volumes in rivers worldwide,and the associated implications for the biogeochemical cycle,require in-depth *** on samples from rivers in Peninsular malaysia,this project investigated the source and characteristics of B Si found in Asian tropical rivers,as well as the process of reverse weathering taking place in these fluvial *** indicated that BSi samples collected in sediments consisted of phytolith,diatom and sponge ***,predominantly of the elongate form,comprised 92.8%-98.3% of BSi in the Pahang *** BSi in this river consisted mainly of pennatae diatoms,but represented a relatively small proportion of the total BSi ***,diatom BSi(predominantly of the Centricae form) was more prevalent in the Pontian and Endau Rivers with shares of 68.8% and 79.3% of the total BSi volumes,respectively,than Pahang *** contents of the BSi particulates ranged from 1.85% to 10.8% with an average of 4.79%.These values are higher than those recorded in other studies to date,and indicate that BSi plays a major role in controlling permanent carbon *** study suggests that phytoliths from terrestrial plants are the primary constituents of BSi in the rivers of Peninsular malaysia,and therefore represent a significant proportion of the coastal silica budget.

Objective:To establish a polymerase chain reaction(PCR) technique based on cytochrome b {cytb) gene of mitochondria DNA(mtDNA) for blood meal ***:The PCR technique was established based on published information and validated using blood sample of laboratory animals of which their whole gene sequences are available in *** was next performed to compile gene sequences of different species of wild *** primers used were complementary to the conserved region of the cytb gene of vertebrate's mtDNA.A total of 100 blood samples,both from laboratory animals and wild rodents were collected und *** obtained unknown sequences were compared with those in the GenBank database using BLAST program to identify the vertebrate animal ***:Gene sequences of 11 species of wild animals caught in 9 localities of Peninsular malaysia were compiled using the established PCR. The animals involved were Rattus(rattus) tanezumi,Rattus tiomanicus,Leopoldamys sabanus, Tupaia glis,Tupaia minor,Niviventor cremoriventor,Rhinosciurus laticaudatus,Calloseiurus caniseps,Sundamys muelleri,Rattus rajah,and Maxomys *** BLAST results confirmed the host with exact or nearly exact matches(>89%identity).Ten new gene sequences have been deposited in CenBank database since September ***:This study indicates that the PCR direct sequencing system using universal primer sets for vertebrate cytb gene is a promising technique for blood meal identification.

Irritable bowel syndrome(IBS) is a chronic gastrointestinal disorder, common in clinic and in the community. It has a significant impact on both society and patients' quality of life. The epidemiology, clinical presentation, and management of IBS may vary in different geographical regions due to differences in diet, gastrointestinal infection, socio-cultural and psychosocial factors, religious and illness beliefs, symptom perception and reporting. Although previous reviews and consensus reports on IBS in Asia have been published, Asia is quite diverse socio-demographically. In this context, India, Bangladesh and malaysia share some similarities, including:(1) large proportion of the population living in rural areas;(2) rapid development and associated lifestyle changes in urban areas; and(3) dietary, cultural and religious practices. The present review explores the clinical and epidemiological data on IBS from these three major nations in South and South-East Asia. In-depth review of the literature revealed important differences between IBS in the East, as revealed by studies from these three countries, and the West; these include a predominantly rural profile, differences in bowel habit and symptom profile, raising concern with regards to diagnostic criteria and subtyping of IBS, higher dietary fiber consumption, frequent lactose malabsorption, parasitosis, and possible overlap between post-infectious IBS and tropical sprue. Moreover, the current perception on difference in prevalence of the disorder in these countries, as compared to the West, might be related to variation in survey methods.

Betel nut is the dry and mature seed of Areca catechu L.,which is originated in malaysia and cultivated in Yunnan,Hainan and Taiwan and other tropical areas of *** is also known as big belly,binmen,olive seed,green seed and so *** nut is a dual-use resource for medicine and food,which was first contained in LI Dang′s Pharmaceutical *** nut tastes bitter,pungent,warm in nature,and belongs to the stomach and large intestine *** contains a variety of chemical components such as alkaloids,phenolic compounds,polysaccharides,fatty acids,amino acids, flavonoids, minerals, terpenoids, and steroids. It has the advantages of promoting digestion, lowering blood pres sure, anti-depression, anti-oxidation, anti-inflammatory, and anti-parasites, antibacterial and other activities. The content of total phenols in fresh fruits of areca nut was 31.1%, mainly including catechin, isorhamnetin, chrysopanthoxanthin, luteolin, tannin and other polyphenols. The commonly used methods for determination of polyphenols in areca are vanil lin titration potassium permanganate titration and potassium ferricyanide spectrophotometry. The main activities and mechanisms of areca polyphenols include: ① Antidepressant effect: polyphenols bind to monoamine oxidase type A (MAO-A) receptors that inhibit the production of neurotransmitters, thereby increasing the content of amine transmitters in the brain and playing a therapeutic effect on depression. ② Antioxidant effect: polyphenols contain multiple adjacent hydroxyl groups, which are easily oxidized and can effectively remove superoxide anion free radical, hydroxyl free radi cal, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical, showing good antioxidant activity. ③ Bacteriostatic effect: polyphenols can spe cifically bind to the surface of bacteria, thus achieving bacteriostatic effect. Studies have found that betel nut polyphenols have varying degrees of inhibitory effects on a variety of bacteria. ④ Inducing apoptosis of lymphocytes:

AFoCo(Asian Forest Cooperation)Project in 2011 has funded a research and development project in malaysia for enriching a mono-species stand established in an ex-tin *** project covered only for a period of 12 months.A study plot of 1 ha size was established in TTAC(Tin Tailings Afforestation Centre).Twenty indigenous tropical rainforest tree species were planted and their five year-old survival count,diameter and H(top height)growths are reported in this *** of them are red list species of IUCN(International Union of Conservation of Nature).The survival of the 1 ha planting trial was 53%.Mortality of the tree species is mainly caused by wild *** tropical rainforest tree species in this planting trial had similar growth to those planted at good mineral *** paper also documented the tending treatments which were implemented during post-planting that have contributed to healthy growth of the mixed-species *** mixed-species stand is being properly tended till to-date and hence sustained growth of the stand is anticipated.
