Soil bentonite wall protects foundation from thrust faulting: analyses and experiment

When seismic thrust faults emerge on the ground surface, they are particularly damaging to buildings, bridges and lifelines that lie on the rupture path. To protect a structure founded on a rigid raft, a thick diaphragm-type soil bentonite wall （SBW） is installed in front of and near the foundation, at sufficient depth to intercept the propagating fault rupture. Extensive numerical analyses, verified against reduced-scale （1 g） split box physical model tests, reveal that such a wall, thanks to its high deformability and low shear resistance, ＂absorbs＂ the compressive thrust of the fault and forces the rupture to deviate upwards along its length. As a consequence, the foundation is left essentially intact. The effectiveness of SBW is demonstrated to depend on the exact location of the emerging fault and the magnitude of the fault offset. When the latter is large, the unprotected foundation experiences intolerable rigid-body rotation even if the foundation structural distress is not substantial.

Harvesting wind energy is promising for extending long-endurance flights,which can be greatly facilitated by a flight technique called dynamic *** presented study is concerned with generating model-based trajectories with smooth control histories for dynamic soaring maneuvers exploiting wind *** desired smoothness is achieved by introducing a trigonometric series parameterization for the controls,which are formulated with respect to the normalized ***,the periodicity of the trigonometric functions is leveraged to facilitate the connection of cycles and streamline the problem *** relying on a specified wind profile,a freefinal-time quadratic programming-based control strategy is developed for the online correction of the flight trajectory,which requires only the instant wind *** and online numerical studies show the trade-off to achieve the smoothness and demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method in a varying wind field.

The content-basedﬁltering technique has been used effectively in a variety of Recommender Systems(RS).The user explicitly or implicitly provides data in the Content-Based Recommender *** system collects this data and creates a proﬁle for all the users,and the recommendation is generated by the user proﬁ*** recommendation generated via content-basedﬁltering is provided by observing just a single user’s proﬁ*** primary objective of this RS is to recommend a list of movies based on the user’s preferences.A con-tent-based movie recommendation model is proposed in this research,which recommends movies based on the user’s proﬁle from the Facebook *** recommendation system is built with a hybrid model that combines the Mon-arch Butterﬂy Optimization(MBO)with the Deep Belief Network(DBN).For feature selection,the MBO is utilized,while DBN is used for classiﬁ*** datasets used in the experiment are collected from Facebook and *** dataset features are evaluated for performance evaluation to validate if data with various attributes can solve the matching ***ﬁle is com-pared with features that prove the features will support movie *** proposed model’s mean absolute error(MAE)and root-mean-square error(RMSE)values are 0.716 and 0.915,and its precision and recall are 97.35 and 96.60 percent,*** tests have demonstrated the advantages of the proposed method in terms of MAE,RMSE,Precision,and Recall compared to state-of-the-art algorithms such as Fuzzy C-means with Bat algorithm(FCM-BAT),Collaborativeﬁltering with k-NN and the normalized discounted cumulative gain method(CF-kNN+NDCG),User proﬁle correlation-based similarity(UPCSim),and Deep Autoencoder.

Based on the essential theory of Penning gases, the discharge characteristics of He-Ar Penning gases in insulating tubes were analyzed qualitatively. The relation between the effective length of an antenna column filled with He-Ar Penning gases and the applied radio frequency （RF） power was investigated both theoretically and experimentally. The distribution of the plasma density along the antenna column in different conditions was studied. The receiving characteristics of local frequency modulated （FM） electromagnetic waves by the plasma antenna filled with He-Ar Penning gases were compared with those by an aluminum antenna with the same dimensions. Results show that it is feasible to take plasma antennas filled with He-Ar Penning gases as receiving antennas.

Ionizing radiation effect and failure mechanism of Digital signal processor(DSP) is studied through test-board and automatic test equipment to find the relationship between system function failure and parameter degradation. Static bias is more sensitive than dynamic bias when DSP is tested on-line during radiation. Core current, high-Z leakage current and timing parameter are sensitive to ionizing radiation. No enhanced low-dose-rate sensitivity is found by comparing experiment results under high and low dose rate *** memory interface and Timer are deduced to be the sensitive module by step radiation and analysis basing full parameter test in Verigy 93000. The timing parameter degradation have a strong correlation to these module functions. And the degeneration mechanism is analysed on inverter through Hspice simulation which indicate the leakage circuit caused by radiation can lead a delay to the digital signal propagating. The parasitical capacitance among long connections make it worse to the data transmission around DSP, field programmable gate array and memory. Then an early function failure occurs in test board than Verigy 93000. This work provide support to systematic radiation hardness design and hardness assurance/lot acceptance testing in space applications.

Eeotourism aims to deliver the philosophy of sustainable development through environmental conservation as well as socio-economic development. Areas with rich biodiversity and scenic beauty, like the Indian Himalayan region, have been one of the major destination centers for nature lovers from historical time. In view of conserving the rich biodiversity and natural heritage of the Himalayan region 92 protected areas have been set aside, of these Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve （NDBR） is a well known world heritage site. Over a period of time establishing NDBR has invited conficts between the local people and reserve authorities on the management approaches and utilization criteria of the natural resources, especially banning the traditional bio-resource collection rights of local community, expeditions, trekking, and other anthropogenic activities in the core zones. The present study aims to understand and analyze the various people - park conflicts, and also to suggest ways to mitigate such conflicts in view of biodiversity conservation and improvement of economic status of local people by promoting eeotourism. With this view the study further discusses the various aspects of eeotourism, its pros and cons, and the avenues of developing appropriate strategies for promotion of ecotourism in buffer zone areas of NDBR.

Distribution of mercury in different environmental compartments in the aquatic ecosystem of the coastal zone of the Southern Baltic Sea

The aim of this study was to characterize mercury （Hg） contamination in the coastal waters of the Southern Baltic Sea, and to investigate transformations of Hg in the initial links of the marine food chain. Concentrations of Hg in water, particulate matter, plankton and macrophytes at various stations in the coastal zone （a bay with restricted water exchange, near an industrial city, river mouths, and the open sea） were measured in 2006–2008. Hg concentrations observed in the Southern Baltic varied greatly, showing the highest average values in all environmental compartments near the river mouths. In shallow, sheltered parts of the gulf, where water exchange is restricted, Hg concentrations in the water and in macrophytes were elevated relative to those in the coastal zone of the deeper part of the bay and in the open Baltic. Distance to the river mouth, terrestrial runoff, and quantity and quality of organic matter were more important than seasonal variations in controlling Hg and HgSPM concentrations in water samples. Mercury concentrations in the surface microlayer at the air/sea interface were over 10 times higher than those in the bulk surface water. Concentrations of Hg in macrophytes in the winter were significantly higher than those in the warm seasons （spring, summer, autumn）. This was probably the combined effect of higher availability of Hg in porewaters and leaf growth inhibition.
