Introduction: Food security is one of the greatest challenges that most African countries face. It is a concept that considers not only food quantity but also food quality. The objective of this study was to describe dietary diversity and food security status at the individual level in Cameroonian populations. Methods: A total of 1180 men and women aged 20 and over and living in the West, North West, and Littoral regions of Cameroon were recruited. Data on dietary habits were collected through the frequency of consumption of various food groups. Dietary diversity was assessed using a 24-hour dietary recall. Food security status was determined by combining two indicators (food consumption score and individual food diversity score). Results: The mean dietary diversity score of the population was 3.53 ± 1.44, p Conclusion: The diet diversity of adults living in the West, North West, and Littoral regions of Cameroon is medium. Although half of the study population was food secure, there is a need to implement food security policies further to reduce food insecurity among the Cameroonian population.

Obesity， caused by excessive energy， leads to body weight gain and various diseases， including cognitive impairment. Current studies suggest that diet restriction such as optimal fasting and regular exercise are crucial for improving cognitive capacity. However， further exploration is needed to understand the specific mechanisms of high fat diet (HFD)-induced cognitive decline in obesity. In the present study， 4-month-old mice were subjected to HFD feeding for 18 weeks， followed by aerobic exercise and high-intensity intermittent exercise， regular diet feeding， and intermittent fasting for 8 weeks， and then used to evaluate cognitive capacity， inflammation， compromised insulin signaling pathway， oxidative stress， and apoptosis in hippocampal tissue， as well as AMPK/SIRT1 and TLR4 signal pathways. Obese mice revealed impaired cognitive capacity as compared with mice fed with regular diets. In contrast， aerobic exercise， high-intensity intermittent exercise， regular diet， and intermittent fasting could inhibit apoptosis caused by inflammation-mediated compromised insulin signaling pathway in hippocampal tissues through activating the AMPK/SIRT1 signal pathway and suppressing the TLR4 signal pathway， thereby rescuing the cognitive impairment of obese mice. Therefore， diet restriction and exercise interventions may play a positive role in reverting obesity-induced cognitive impairment.

Sweet potato leaf tips have high nutritional value,and exploring the differences in the metabolic profiles of leaf tips among different sweet potato varieties can provide information to improve their *** this study,a UPLC-Q-Exactive Orbitrap/MS-based untargeted metabolomics method was used to evaluate the metabolites in leaf tips of 32 sweet potato *** varieties with distinct overall metabolic profiles(A01,A02,and A03),two varieties with distinct profiles of phenolic acids(A20 and A18),and three varieties with distinct profiles of flavonoids(A05,A12,and A16)were *** addition,a total of 163 and 29 differentially expressed metabolites correlated with the color and leaf shape of sweet potato leaf tips,respectively,were identified through morphological *** comparison analysis of the phenotypic traits and a metabolite-phenotypic trait correlation analysis indicated that the color differences of sweet potato leaf tips were markedly associated with ***,the level of polyphenols was correlated with the leaf shape of sweet potato leaf tips,with lobed leaf types having higher levels of polyphenols than the entire leaf *** findings on the metabolic profiles and differentially expressed metabolites associated with the morphology of sweet potato leaf tips can provide useful information for breeding sweet potato varieties with higher nutritional value.

Diabetes and hypertension are the most prevalent cardiovascular risk factors. Recent studies showed an increase in the prevalence of food insecurity in our country. The aim of this study was to assess how food insecurity affects the dietary habits, socio-demographic characteristics and metabolic profile of individuals with diabetes or hypertension. This case-control study was conducted among diabetic and hypertensive participants (cases) and diabetic and hypertensive normal (controls) during the screening campaigns for nutrition-related chronic diseases. The sociodemographic, clinical and biochemical parameters of the participants were analyzed. Logistic regression analyses were performed to identify factors associated with diabetes and hypertension in the study population. Bivariate analyses showed that male gender (OR = 1.972;95% CI: 1.250 - 3.089), regular alcohol consumption (OR = 2.012;95% CI: 1.294 - 3.130), low fruit consumption (OR = 1.590;95% CI: 1.016 - 2.488), low dietary diversity (OR = 2.915;95% CI: 1.658 - 5.127) and abdominal obesity (OR = 1.893, CI 95% 1.203 - 2.978) were significantly associated with hypertension. In addition, low fruit consumption (OR = 1.829;95% CI 1.092 - 3.064), low legume consumption (OR = 3.515;95% CI 1.861 - 6.635), and hypertriglyceridaemia (OR = 2.241, 95% CI 1.139 - 4.408) were significantly associated with diabetes. The indirect association observed between food insecurity and diabetes and hypertension suggests the need for nutritional policies aimed at popularizing the production and consumption of fruits and legumes. Similarly, health services need to be aware and informed of the important role that food insecurity can play in the development of diabetes and hypertension.

There is a need to develop interventions to slow or reverse the degeneration of dopamine neurons in Parkinson’s disease after *** that preclinical and clinical studies suggest benefits of dietary n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids,such as docosahexaenoic acid,and exercise in Parkinson’s disease,we investigated whether both could synergistically interact to induce recovery of the dopaminergic ***,mice received a unilateral stereotactic injection of 6-hydroxydopamine into the striatum to establish an animal model of nigrostriatal *** weeks after lesion,animals were fed a docosahexaenoic acid-enriched or a control diet for the next 8 *** this period,the animals had access to a running wheel,which they could use or *** acid treatment,voluntary exercise,or the combination of both had no effect on(i)distance traveled in the open field test,(ii)the percentage of contraversive rotations in the apomorphine-induction test or(iii)the number of tyrosine-hydroxylase-positive cells in the substantia nigra pars ***,the docosahexaenoic acid diet increased the number of tyrosine-hydroxylase-positive terminals and induced a rise in dopamine concentrations in the lesioned *** to docosahexaenoic acid treatment or exercise alone,the combination of docosahexaenoic acid and exercise(i)improved forelimb balance in the stepping test,(ii)decreased the striatal DOPAC/dopamine ratio and(iii)led to increased dopamine transporter levels in the lesioned *** present results suggest that the combination of exercise and docosahexaenoic acid may act synergistically in the striatum of mice with a unilateral lesion of the dopaminergic system and provide support for clinical trials combining nutrition and physical exercise in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease.

Emerging evidence supports that sleep disorders are the main risk factor for sporadic Alzheimer’s disease (AD)， and iron dysregulation may be the link between them. Our previous studies have confirmed that ketogenic diet (KD) can prevent chronic sleep deprivation-induced AD. However， it is uncertain whether exogenous ketones supplements (EKS)， as an alternative intervention， have the same effects as KD. Thus， we investigated the prophylactic efficiency of EKS on chronic sleep deprivation-induced AD and reveal the underlying mechanism focus on iron metabolism. We observed that the prophylactic efficacy of EKS against chronic sleep deprivation-induced AD was comparable to that of KD. Meanwhile， our results suggest that both EKS and KD inhibited iron metabolism disorder through regulation of iron metabolism-related proteins. Moreover， we found that both EKS and KD reduced hippocampal mitochondrial dysfunction and iron-mediated lipid peroxides. Furthermore， EX527 (Sirt1 inhibitor)， mostly abrogated these above protections of EKS， suggesting that the prophylactic effect of EKS on AD is partly dependent on Sirt1. Our findings provide novel evidence that EKS can be developed as functional foods to prevent or delay the development of AD， particularly in individuals with sleep disorders.

Selenium(Se)-enriched Brassica napus *** a valuable organic Se *** this study,the fermentation broth enriched with organic Se(FFS)was prepared using Lactobacillus plantarum to ferment the substrate of Se-enriched Brassica napus *** increases were observed after fermentation in total sugars,reducing sugars,soluble proteins,total phenolic content(TPC),and total flavonoid content(TFC).The organic Se was retained at a concentration of 54.75 mg/g in the freeze-dried *** component analysis and cluster analysis showed good separation between the FFS and unfermented(FS)*** 2-ethyloxetane had the highest content among all volatiles,while sinapine had the highest content among all phenolic *** fermentation process showed remarkable improvement in the abundance and concentration of volatile compounds and phenolic contents,making FFS exhibit strong antioxidant activity and inhibitory capacity againstα-glucosidase *** bioaccessibility of phenolic compounds was significantly greater in FFS compared to *** analysis revealed that the majority of phenolic compounds contained in FFS did not exhibit mutagenicity toxicity,hepatotoxicity,skin sensitization,or blood-brain barrier penetration,indicating a favorable level of ***,our study provides a new insight into the further utilization of Se-enriched Brassica napus *** foods.

Soy whey(SW)is generated as process waste while preparing soy protein isolates(SPI),and causing severe environmental ***,its value-added utilization is of prime importance for transforming and upgrading traditional *** study aims to utilize SW as a substrate for the growth of probiotics and produce a SW based *** a series of trials,the effect of the dietary supplementation with this fermented SW(FSW)was analyzed on ICR mice's body weight,metabolites,and intestinal microbiota in 4 *** results showed that,when SW was concentrated 15 times,the count of viable Lactobacillus casei reached 3.4×10^(9) CFU/mL by liquid fermentation method,which was the highest viable cell count among all test *** this FSW,the protein,amino acid,total dietary fibre,soluble dietary fibre,and oligosaccharide were 2.10%,1.63%,0.52%,0.51% and 0.79%,*** to two control group,the total yields of the short chain fatty acids(SCFAs)were significantly improved(75%-125% at average),while the SCFAs structure was also significantly changed(especially acetic acid and butyrate)in the faeces of mice fed ***,FSW dietary addition was associated with the diversity and richness of the intestinal ***,with mice's body weight loss,Firmicutes/Bacteroides ratio reduced accordingly(<1.21),and the abundance of Akkermansia muciniphila was significantly increased(the maximum amount was about 0.013%).In summary,our results indicated that the dietary supplementation of FSW affected mice's intestinal microbiota and metabolism and improved their health profile.

Complementary Food Situation in Sierra Leone: nutritional Problems and Possible Strategies—A Review

Low nutrient density and bulkiness of complementary foods, early introduction of solid foods, and unhygienic practices during weaning stage of a child predispose infants to malnutrition, growth retardation, infection and high mortality. In most West African countries, especially in Sierra Leone, the use of a variety of home-made complementary foods prepared from locally grown foodstuffs during the weaning process is popular, with products traditionally known as pap (mesh rice water) fofo from cassava, ogi, gari, akamu and couscous. Sierra Leone is one of the countries in West Africa that has been reported to have a challenging situation with regards to complementary foods, and little effort has so far been done to improve the situation. Despite these challenges, very little work has been directed towards the development of complementary foods using local foodstuffs as practiced in some other African countries. This situation has serious impact on the lives of infants in Sierra Leone, thus increasing the rate of mortality in the country. Complementary food situation in Sierra Leone was reviewed in terms of the past and present practices as well as the types of complementary foods used in Sierra Leone. Thus, the objective of this review was to discuss the complementary food situation in Sierra Leone: nutritional problems and possible strategies. Formulation of high nutritive value home-made complementary foods in the country was recommended using traditional food processing techniques such as fermentation and germination, since these methods are simple, and could easily be employed at household and community levels without the use of sophisticated machinery. Nonetheless, it was recently reported that a product from the orange-flesh sweet potato could address the issue of complementary food in the country as it is easy to prepare, and the products are easily available in the rural area and even urban settings.
