Dibutyl phthalate disrupts[Ca^(2+)]_(i),reactive oxygen species,[pH]_(i),protein kinases and mitochondrial activity,impairing sperm function

To explore the mechanism of sperm dysfunction caused by dibutyl phthalate(DBP),the effects of DBP on intracellular[Ca^(2+)]and[pH],reactive oxygen species(ROS),lipid peroxidation(LPO),mitochondrial permeability transition pore(mPTP)opening,mitochondrial membrane potential(MMP),adenosine triphosphate(ATP)levels,phosphorylation of protein kinase A(PKA)substrate proteins and phosphotyrosine(p-Tyr)proteins,sperm motility,spontaneous acrosome reaction,and tail bending were examined in mouse *** 100μg/mL,DBP significantly increased tail bending and[Ca^(2+)]***,DBP showed biphasic effects on[pH]*** at 10–100μg/mL significantly decreased sperm ***,Ca^(2+)ionophore A23187 decreased[pH]_(i)sperm motility,suggesting that DBP-induced excessive[Ca^(2+)]_(i)decreased sperm *** significantly increased ROS and *** at 100μg/mL significantly decreased mPTP closing,MMP,and ATP levels in spermatozoa,as did H2O2,indicative of ROS-mediatedmitochondrial dysfunction caused by *** as well as H2O2 increased p-Tyr sperm proteins and phosphorylated PKA substrate sperm *** at 1–10μg/mL significantly increased the spontaneous acrosome reaction,suggesting that DBP can activate sperm ***,DBP showed a biphasic effect on intracellular signaling in *** concentrations relevant to seminal ortho-phthalate levels,DBP activates[pH]i,protein tyrosine kinases and PKA via physiological levels of ROS generation,potentiating sperm *** at high doses excessively raises[Ca^(2+)]_(i)and ROS and disrupts[pH]i,impairing the mitochondrial function,tail structural integrity,and sperm motility.

A new exceptionally preserved corystosperm wood from the Jurassic of East Asia

Corystosperms, an extinct group of “seed ferns” that lived from the late Permian to the Cretaceous or Eocene, are significant for seed plant phylogeny for their unique roles in partially resolving the long-standing question of angiosperm origins.A new fossil wood taxon, Fengweioxylon sinense gen. et sp. nov. is reported here based on exceptionally preserved wood material from the Jurassic in western Liaoning, China, whose peculiar wood structure enables it to be recognized as the first unequivocal fossil wood record of a corystosperm plant in Laurasia. The anatomical structures of this corystosperm wood show gymnospermous characters. The discovery of the new specimen will provide more anatomical evidence for understanding the systematic and affinity of this seed plants.

Identifying suitable areas for plenter forest management

Plenter forests, also known as uneven-aged or continuous cover forests enhance forest resilience and resistance against disturbances compared to even-aged forests. They are considered as an adaptation option to mitigate climate change effects. In this study, we present a conceptual approach to determine the potentially suitable area for plenter forest management within central European mixed species forests and apply our approach to the case study area in Styria, the south-eastern Province of Austria. The concept is based on ecological and technicaleconomic constraints and considers expected future climate conditions and its impact on plenter forest management. For each 1 ha forest pixel, we assess the ecological conditions for plenter forest management according to the autecological growth conditions of silver fir, and at least one additional shade tolerant tree species. The technical-economic constraints are defined by slope(≤30%) and distance to the next forest road(≤100 m) to ensure cost-efficient harvesting. The results show that under current climate conditions 28.1% or 305,349 ha of the forests in Styria are potentially suitable for plenter forest management. For the years 2071–2100 and under the climate change scenario RCP 4.5, the potential area decreases to 286,098 ha(26.3% of the total forest area)and for the scenario RCP 8.5 to 208,421 ha(19.1% of the total forest area). The main reason for these changes is the unfavourable growing conditions for silver fir in the lowlands, while in the higher elevations silver fir is likely to expand. Our results may serve forest managers to identify areas suitable for plenter forests and assist in the transformation of even-aged pure forests to uneven-aged forests to increase resistance, resilience, and biodiversity under climate change.

Chemical weathering in Manas River Basin:Driven by sulfuric acid or carbonic acid?

Geochemistry of shales of middle Permian Barren Measures Formation,West Bokaro Basin,India:Implications on provenance,paleodepositional and paleoclimatic conditions

Geochemical analyses of fine-grained clastic sedimentary rocks,such as shales,are significant since they portray the nature of the control factors from source to sink in a sedimentary basin,and help characterizing the heterogeneity in potential source and/or reservoir *** rock geochemistry（including major element oxides,trace elements and rare earth elements） of 20 shale samples from the Permian Barren Measures Formation,West Bokaro Basin,Peninsular India,is presented to decipher the provenance,paleoweathering,paleotectonic,paleodepositional and paleoredox conditions of the basin within the Lower Gondwana paleogeographic framework.X-ray diffraction（XRD） peaks and scanning electron microscopy（SEM）reveal an abundance of quartz,muscovite and clay minerals,viz.,illite,kaolinite,etc.,with less abundant feldspar and *** concentrations of major element oxides,trace elements and rare earth elements（REEs） of the shale samples are compared with predefined standards such as PAAS and *** CIA（chemical index of alteration） and the A-CN-K values,based on the ratios of the major element oxides,signify intense chemical *** ratios of Sr/Cu versus Rb/Sr and K2O/Al2O3versus Ga/Rb,and high ∑REE values indicate a temperate *** of the major element oxides（e.g.,K2O/Na2O versus SiO2） suggest a passive tectonic *** Eu/Eu*and（Gd/Yb）_n values depict predominantly post-Archean granitic and gneissic source *** ratios of trace elements,viz.,Th/Sc,Th/Co,Th/Cr,La/Sc and Eu/Eu*,and the distribution pattern of the REEs（higher LREE in comparison to HREE） attest to a felsic-intermediate source from a nearby *** redox-sensitive trace elements,such as V and Ni,indicate a dysoxic condition that prevailed during *** ratios of Fe2O3versus MgO and Log（MgO/Al2O3） versus Log（K2O/Al2O3）,and the ternary plots of Fe2O3-MgO-SiO2/Al2O3suggest a non-marine to deltaic transitional *** evidence of marine influences during

Dieback of spruce plantations: Deadwood stands and management heterogeneity enhance beetle diversity and habitat connectivity

Forest ecosystems are important for biodiversity conservation and human societies, but are under pressure due to climate change and human interventions. This applies to natural forests as well as tree plantations. The latter are globally widespread and therefore gaining increasing importance for biodiversity conservation. However, even after dieback due to increasing disturbance frequencies, such plantations are primarily managed for economic returns, leading to growing conflicts among stakeholders. In particular, the impact of forest management on biodiversity is being discussed. This study investigates the effects of five management approaches in a landscape severely affected by spruce(Picea abies L.) dieback on beetle diversity, conservation, and community *** considered direct effects of management and indirect effects of environmental parameters separately in ground-dwelling and flight-active beetles. Beetle diversity was strongly affected by forest management, with nonintervention deadwood stands being most beneficial for beetles. In addition, we show indirect effects of environmental factors. In general, parameters related to salvage logging(e.g. open canopies, tree stumps) influenced beetle diversity and conservation negatively, while positive effects were found for soil nutrient availability and plant species richness. Community composition differed strongly among management categories and indicated a lack of landscape connectivity for open habitat species, as we found only low proportions of such species even on salvage-logged sites. We propose a mixture of management approaches after bark beetle outbreaks, including a substantial proportion of non-intervention deadwood stands, to increase landscape heterogeneity and connectivity. This may increase overall biodiversity while addressing the concerns of both forestry and species conservation.

Reconstructing forest and grassland cover changes in China over the past millennium

Historical forest and grassland cover changes not only are critical indicators for quantifying ecological and environmental change processes but also serve as fundamental data for long-term climate change simulations and terrestrial ecosystem carbon emission ***,because of limitations in historical data,quantitative estimations and spatially gridded reconstructions of these changes remain challenging,necessitating further methodological *** study focused on China's present-day land area over the past millennium,objectively capturing the characteristics and drivers of forest and grassland cover *** this basis,using the forest transition theory and the space-for-time substitution method,we depicted the historical deforestation process as an inverted“S”curve and developed a model to reconstruct historical forest area changes based on the functional relationship between the forest area and population size ***,a gridded forest allocation model was established on the basis of deforestation *** the grassland cover,we implemented regionspecific methods,such as the cropland area deduction method and the habitat constraint method,to quantitatively reconstruct historical ***,we obtained provincial forest and grassland area changes over the past millennium and mapped 10-km-resolution gridded data of forest and grassland *** results indicated the following.(1)The methods developed using population data as a proxy objectively reproduced the spatiotemporal evolution of forest and grassland cover in China over the past *** feasible methods offer a novel pathway for the quantitative reconstruction of historical forest and grassland cover changes.(2)The data indicated that China's forest area generally decreased over the past millennium,characterized by a“decrease-then-increase”*** forest area experienced three distinct phases:a slow decline(AD 1000–1650),a rapid decline(AD 16

Heavy metal(loid)(HM)pollution in agricultural soils has become an environmental concern in antimony(Sb)mining ***,priority pollution sources identification and deep understanding of environmental risks of HMs face great challenges due to multiple and complex pollution sources ***,an integrated approach was conducted to distinguish pollution sources and assess human health risk(HHR)and ecological risk(ER)in a typical Sb mining watershed in Southern *** approach combines absolute principal component score-multiple linear regression(APCS-MLR)and positivematrix factorization(PMF)models with ER and HHR *** pollution sources were distinguished for both models,and APCS-MLR model was more accurate and *** HM concentration source was natural source(39.1%),followed by industrial and agricultural activities(23.0%),unknown sources(21.5%)and Sb mining and smelting activities(16.4%).Although natural source contributed the most to HM concentrations,it did not pose a significant *** and agricultural activities predominantly contributed to ER,and attention should be paid to Cd and *** mining and smelting activities were primary anthropogenic sources of HHR,particularly Sb and As *** ER and HHR assessments,Sb mining and smelting,and industrial and agricultural activities are critical sources,causing serious ecological and health *** study showed the advantages of multiple receptor model application in obtaining reliable source identification and providing better source-oriented risk *** pollution management,such as regulating mining and smelting and implementing soil remediation in polluted agricultural soils,is strongly recommended for protecting ecosystems and humans.

Long-duration aqueous Zn-ion batteries achieved by dual-salt highly-concentrated electrolyte with low water activity

Aqueous Zn-ion batteries have attracted much attention due to their unique high safety and low-cost ***,their practical applications are at a slow pace due to their short cycle life,which fundamentally results from the instability of the positive/negative electrode interface in the traditional dilute aqueous electrolytes with high water *** highly concentrated electrolyte（HCE）has been considered as an effective *** previous studies of single salt-based HCE（SSHCE）,herein,a new dual-salt HCE（15 m ZnCl2+10 m NH4NH2SO3DS-HCE） was proposed for the first ***-HCE was proven to simultaneously possess higher conductivity than traditional dilute electrolytes and ultralow water activity of SS-HCE by the regulation of dual high-concentration salts on the solvation structure,which renders the Zn‖Zn symmetric cell the record-long cycling life of 2200 h compared with those with SS-HCE（30 m ZnCl2,300 h） and other reported ***,the Zn‖NH4V4O10full cell with DS-HCE demonstrated impressed rate capability within a wide-range current densities from 0.1 to 10 A ***,at the high current density of 5 A g-1,the full cell shows almost100% capacity retention after 4000 cycles,which indicates the promising future of the DS-HCE system for long-duration aqueous Zn-ion batteries.
