Moisture budget analysis showed that the dynamic component anomalies of both the zonal and vertical moisture advection induced by the SCA pattern play the dominant roles in extreme precipitation variability over the ESTP. These anomalies are solely linked to variations in zonal wind and vertical velocity. The anomalies of the SCA pattern propagate downstream through Rossby waves, leading to the formation of cyclonic circulations over northern East Asia and the Iranian Plateau. The westerlies on the southern side of these cyclonic circulations play a crucial role in influencing the development of significant anomalous westerlies over the ESTP. The anomalous westerlies bring climatologically moist air from the Tibetan Plateau(TP) to the ESTP, resulting in positive zonal moisture advection anomalies over the area. Furthermore, these anomalous westerlies transport climatologically warm air from the TP to the ESTP, leading to significant warm advection anomalies and vertical upward motion anomalies over the ESTP. The upward motion carries lower-tropospheric moisture upward, resulting in positive vertical moisture advection anomalies over the ESTP. The combination of these positive zonal and vertical moisture advection anomalies eventually leads to excessive SEP.

A robust statistical prediction model for late-summer heavy precipitation days in North China

Recently,heavy precipitation(HP)events have occurred frequently in North China(NC),causing devastating economic losses and human ***,the short-term climate prediction of HP is quite *** year-to-year increment(DY)method and sliding correlations,we developed a robust seasonal prediction model for late-summer HP days(HPDs)in NC during 1982–2022,utilizing three independent predictors—February sea surface temperature(SST)in the Indian Ocean(SST_IO),February snow depth over North Asia(SDE_NA),and May melted snow depth in NC(MSDE_NC).The SST_IO anomalies affect NC's precipitation through the Pacific-Japan *** SDE_NA anomalies are associated with East Asian anomalous anticyclone by southeastern propagation of Rossby wave at *** MSDE_NC anomalies are followed by vertical motion and moisture anomalies in situ and thereby cause precipitation *** prediction model can well simulate the variations of the HPDs,with a correlation coefficient(CC)of 0.81(0.65)between the observed and predicted HPDs_DY(HPDs_anomaly).The percentage with the same sign for 15 extreme HPDs_anomaly years(PSSE)is 100%.Moreover,in the cross-validation test during 1982–2022,the PSSE for HPDs_anomaly is as high as 100%,along with a low rootmean-square error of *** independent hindcasts during 2013–2022,the CC between the observed and predicted HPDs_DY(HPDs_anomaly)is 0.93(0.83),together with high Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency(0.82)and agreement index(0.89).Specifically,the predictions are broadly consistent with the observations for 2015,2016,2017,2021,and 2022,reflecting excellent performance of this prediction model of HPDs in NC.

Effects of Lignite Humic Acid and Lignite Humic Acid-based Combined Amendment on Soil Quality in Saline-sodic Farmlands in the West Liaohe Plain, China

Water scarcity and soil salinization pose significant challenges to agriculture in the West Liaohe Plain, eastern Inner Mongolia, China. Shallow-buried drip irrigation can improve soil water use efficiency to alleviate water shortage in agriculture and the application of lignite humic acid reduces the adverse effects of soil salinization. However, further research is needed to investigate the effects of different application rates of lignite humic acid and humic acid-based combined amendment on soil physicochemical properties, nutrient contents, and crop yield in saline-sodic farmlands under shallow-buried drip irrigation. A two-year field experiment was conducted with control without any amendment(CK), three treatments amended with 3 t/ha(H1), 6 t/ha(H2), and 12 t/ha(H3) lignite humic acid,and three application rates with 15 t/ha(T1), 22.5 t/ha(T2), and 30 t/ha(T3) lignite humic acid-based combined amendment in 2021 and2022. The results showed that H3 reduced soil bulk density, p H, electrical conductivity, and total alkalinity, while increasing the contents of soil organic matter, total nitrogen, and available potassium in the two-year experiment. Moreover, the maize yield in H3 increased by an average of 35.5%. T2 decreased soil bulk density, p H, total alkalinity, and increased maize yield by 16.2%, compared to the first year. These results suggest that T2 consistently improved both soil quality and crop yield. Correlation analyses showed that lignite humic acid and its complexes promote maize growth and increase yield by increasing soil organic matter and total nitrogen while reducing soil salinity and total alkalinity. Based on the comprehensive analysis of the field data and the results of the comprehensive evaluation of soil quality, it was determined that the appropriate improvement measures for saline-sodic farmlands under shallow-buried drip irrigation are the application of 12 t/ha of lignite humic acid and 22.5 t/ha of lignite humic acid-based combined

Impact of net-zero emissions on atmospheric CO2 concentration in China: Ideal simulations based on the GEOS-Chem model

Elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide（CO2） concentrations have caused global climate change such as global warming and more frequent climate extremes. Countries worldwide have proposed carbon neutrality strategies to curb the rising CO2concentrations. To investigate the impact of China's carbon neutrality goal on atmospheric CO2concentrations, we conducted a series of ideal simulations from 2015 to 2019 using a global 3D chemistry transport model, Goddard Earth Observing System Chemistry（GEOS-Chem）. Compared with the column-averaged dry-air mole fraction of atmospheric CO2（XCO2） from Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2（OCO-2） and surface CO2measurements in Obs Pack, we find that GEOS-Chem effectively reproduces the spatiotemporal variability of CO2. The model exhibits a root mean square error（RMSE） of 1.51 ppm（R2=0.89） for OCO-2 XCO2in China and 2.65 ppm（R2=0.75） for surface CO2concentrations at the WLG station. Further, compared to 2.83 ppm yr-1in the control experiment, we suggest that net-zero CO2emissions in China decelerate the increasing trends of XCO2to 1.81 ppm yr-1,making a decrease of approximately 35.89%. Meanwhile, the seasonal cycle amplitude（SCA） of XCO2is moderately reduced from 7.39±0.81 to 6.75±0.70 ppm, representing a relative reduction of 9.91%. Spatially, net-zero CO2emissions induce a more significant decrease in XCO2trends over northern and southern China, while their impact on SCA is more evident in northern and northeastern China. Moreover, ideal experiments demonstrate that zero fossil CO2emissions lead to a greater attenuation of the linear trends of XCO2by 40.81%, while the absence of terrestrial CO2sinks largely diminishes the SCA by 16.61%. Additionally,trends and SCA in surface CO2concentrations exhibit almost identical decreasing responses to net-zero CO2emissions but display greater sensitivities compared to XCO2. The process of agricultural intensification has led to significant reductions in biodiversity *** studies examined the role of semi-natural habitats within agroecosystems in supporting bird communities,but few have considered the effects of landscape agricultural intensity on avian conservation potential of seminatural ***,we disentangle the relative effects of semi-natural habitats within different landscape agricultural intensities on bird community composition in central and eastern jilin province,*** established 322 sampling sites distributed across low,middle,and high landscape agricultural intensities,with 103,118,and 101 sites *** sampling site was visited two times in May and June 2023 to test the dissimilarities in bird composition between different landscape agricultural *** found that middleintensity agriculture supported the highest bird diversity in most cases,but low-intensity plays an important role in maintaining insectivorous *** used generalized linear models and model selection to assess the relative impacts of semi-natural habitats on bird community along agricultural intensity *** results showed that the effects of agriculture on bird communities were predominantly influenced by the amount of semi-natural habitats,with effects that differ in accordance with the level of landscape agricultural *** should be given to preserve or/and plant these semi-natural habitats in middle-intensity agriculture due to the stronger effect sizes on bird ***,we suggested preserving and promoting woodlands and shrubs in high-intensity agriculture,and simultaneously increasing crop diversity to protect bird diversity in agriculture landscapes in the context of increasing crop intensification globally.

A Machine Learning-Based Observational Constraint Correction Method for Seasonal Precipitation Prediction

Seasonal precipitation has always been a key focus of climate *** a dynamic-statistical combined method,the existing observational constraint correction establishes a regression relationship between the numerical model outputs and historical observations,which can partly predict seasonal ***,solving a nonlinear problem through linear regression is significantly *** study implements a nonlinear optimization of an existing observational constrained correction model using a Light Gradient Boosting Machine(LightGBM)machine learning algorithm based on output from the Beijing National Climate Center Climate System Model(BCC-CSM)and station observations to improve the prediction of summer precipitation in *** model was trained using a rolling approach,and LightGBM outperformed Linear Regression(LR),Extreme Gradient Boosting(XGBoost),and Categorical Boosting(CatBoost).Using parameter tuning to optimize the machine learning model and predict future summer precipitation using eight different predictors in BCC-CSM,the mean Anomaly Correlation Coefficient(ACC)score in the 2019–22 summer precipitation predictions was 0.17,and the mean Prediction Score(PS)reached *** PS score was improved by 7.87%and 6.63%compared with the BCC-CSM and the linear observational constraint approach,*** observational constraint correction prediction strategy with LightGBM significantly and stably improved the prediction of summer precipitation in China compared to the previous linear observational constraint solution,providing a reference for flood control and drought relief during the flood season(summer)in China.
