A corpus-based discourse study of Chinese medicine in UK national newspapers

With the increasing focus on personal health in society, the media pays more and more attention to health issues. The media has the power to set agendas to create both public awareness and concern. The discourses they construct influence the shape of public opinion. This study merges corpus analysis and discourse studies to explore the discursive constructions around Chinese medicine in British newspapers. We found that the agenda surrounding traditional Chinese medicine set in British national newspapers is an important factor in imparting knowledge on Chinese medicine, influencing the understanding of issues the readers are concerned with, and shaping the public opinion on Chinese medicine.

A simple experiment for laser diffraction of capillary waves on liquid film surface (LFS) is realized. Steady and visible diffraction patterns are obtained. The dispersion relation of capillary waves on LFS is verified by laser diffraction. In particular, both the relation between the wave number and the film thickness at a fixed angular frequency and the relation between the angular frequency and the wave number at a fixed film thickness are investigated. The theoretical and experimental results are in good agreement.

Selective maintenance problem for series–parallel system under economic dependence

In view of the high complexity of the objective world, an economic dependence between subsystems(paired and unpaired) is proposed, and then the maintenance cost and time under different economic dependences are formulated in a simple and consistent manner. Selective maintenance problem under economic dependence(EDSMP) is presented based on a series–parallel system in this paper. A case study shows that the system reliability is promoted to a certain extent, which can validate the validity of the EDSMP model. The influence of the ratio of set-up cost on system performance is mainly discussed under different economic dependences. Several existing improvements of classical exhaust algorithm are further modified to solve a large sized EDSMP rapidly. Experimental results illustrate that these improvements can reduce CPU time *** the contribution of each improvement is defined here, and then their contributions are compared thoroughly.

This paper investigates the boundary value problem for elastic beam equation of the formu″″（t） q（t）f（t, u（t）,u′（t）,u″（t）,u′″（t））, 0〈t〈1,with the boundary conditionsu=（0）=u′（1）=u″（0）=u′″（1）=0.The boundary conditions describe the deformation of an elastic beam simply supported at left and clamped at right by sliding clamps. By using Leray-Schauder nonlinear alternate, Leray-Schauder fixed point theorem and a fixed point theorem due to Avery and Peterson, we establish some results on the existence and multiplicity of positive solutions to the boundary value problem. Our results extend and improve some recent work in the literature.

Since the 1980s, Cultural Studies have analyzed television in the context of the present. They have asked how soap operas and TV series contribute to the circulation of meanings and pleasures in everyday contexts. John Fiskes coined the concept television culturein his very successful book with the same title Taking The Sopranos as an example, this article shows that quality TV is an outstanding contribution to television culture. The show is more complex, more layered and more intertextual than the shows of the 1980s that Fiske interpreted. The Sopranos is a postmodern cultural phenomenon that appeals to different groups of viewers. It is no longer only about the addicted fans, but also about critical viewers who want to better understand themselves and their lives, and also about connoisseurs and art enthusiasts to whom serial reception becomes a distinctive feature. This article comes to the conclusion that popular culture in the sense of Cultural Studies is still of important political significance in the twenty-first century.

Efficient Video Cutout by Paint Selection

Video cutout refers to extracting moving objects from videos, which is an important step in many video editing tasks. Recent Mgorithms have limitations in terms of efficiency interaction style and robustness. This paper presents a novel method for progressive video cutout with less user interaction and fast feedback. By exploring local and compact features, an optimization is constructed based on a graph model which establishes spatial and temporal relationship of neighboring patches in video frames. This optimization enables an efficient solution for progressive video cutout using graph cuts. Furthermore, a sampling-based method for temporally coherent matting is proposed to further refine video cutout results. Experiments demonstrate that our video cutout by paint selection is more intuitive and efficient for users than previous stroke-based methods, and thus could be put into practical use.

Data recovery from flash memory in the mobile device can effectively reduce the loss caused by data corruption. Type recognition of data fragment is an essential prerequisite to the low-level data recovery. Previous works in this field classify data fragment based on its file type. Still, the classification efficiency is low, especially when the data fragment is a part of a composite *** propose a fine-grained approach to classifying data fragment from the low-level flash memory to improve the classification accuracy and efficiency. The proposed method redefines flash-memory-page data recognition problem based on the encoding format of the data segment, and applies a hybrid machine learning algorithm to detect the data type of the flash page. The hybrid algorithm can significantly decompose the given data space and reduce the cost of training. The experimental results show that our method achieves better classification accuracy and higher time performance than the existing methods.

Impact of non-ideal UE hardware on cell-free massive MIMO network with centralized operation

This paper investigates the impact of non-ideal user equipment(UE) hardware on a cell-free(CF) massive MIMO(mMIMO) network with centralized operation under spatially correlated channels. The minimum mean-squared error(MMSE) estimator can be derived with the help of the generic non-ideal UE hardware model. It is demonstrated that even if the effective signal-to-noise ratio approaches infinity, pilot contamination and imperfect hardware can cause a non-zero estimation error floor. After that, a lower bound is determined for the ergodic uplink capacity of the centralized CF mMIMO network under non-ideal UE hardware. Moreover, the optimal receive combining vector is obtained to maximize the uplink spectral efficiency(SE). The maximum ratio(MR) and regularized zero-forcing(RZF) combining schemes are offered as alternatives in light of the computational complexity of the MMSE receiver. Comparing the RZF to the MMSE scheme under different levels of hardware impairments, our findings indicate that the RZF receiver suffers a negligible loss in total SE. For MR combining, a novel closed-form uplink achievable SE expression is obtained based on the MMSE estimator and the use-and-then-forget bounding technique. This expression gives vital insights into the achievable uplink performance with UE hardware impairments. Besides, for various hardware impairment factors, the impact of pilot sequence length on average sum SE is disclosed for different receive combining schemes. To increase the overall SE of the max-min fairness scheme, a heuristic fractional power control scheme with UE hardware impairments is developed, which can essentially avoid sacrificing the SE of other UEs while maximizing the SE of the unluckiest UE in the whole network. Finally,our theoretical performance analysis and power control algorithm are validated by simulation results, and fundamental design guidelines are provided for selecting hardware satisfying the practical UE requirements.

When a population structure is modelled as a square lattice,the cooperation may be improved for an evolutionary prisoner dilemma game or be inhibited for an evolutionary snowdrift *** this work,we investigate cooperation in a population on a square lattice where the interaction among players contains both prisoner dilemma game and snowdrift *** heterogeneity in interaction is introduced to the population in two different ways:the heterogenous character of interaction assigned to every player(HCP) or the heterogenous character of interaction assigned to every link between any two players(HCL).The resonant enhancement of cooperation in the case of HCP is observed while the resonant inhibition of cooperation in the case of HCL is *** explanations on the enhancement or inhibition of cooperation are presented for these two cases.
