Refractive-diffractive visual system for micro-display of LCOS

One head-mounted display visual system for computer entertainment and three-dimensional display of virtual-reality was achieved, which consists of a hybrid re-fractive-diffractive eyepiece and a relay reflector. It can be used in micro-display of liquid crystal on silicon (LCOS) diagonal of 18 mm. The whole system has better performance, with 60° field of view, 10 mm exit pupil, 23 mm eye relief, and reduces weight and size.

The evolution of solid-liquid interface during BBO single crystal growth was stud- ied by the differential interference microscopy. And the step morphology on (0001) surface of the as-grown crystal was observed by the atomic force microscopy as well. It was found that the transition from a flat solid-liquid interface to a skeletal shape will occur in case of rapid growth. However, AFM images of surface steps revealed morphology differences correlated with crystallographic directions. The steps advancing along direction form the step flow, whereas those steps propagating along direction shape into step segments. Measurements of step heights by AFM indicated that it is the high anisotropy of the dimension of growth unit and step bunching due to the enlargement of concentration difference along the surface that results in the anisotropy of step morphologies.

We demonstrate a linearly-polarized, ytterbium-doped fiber laser that uses an uncoated, undoped ceramic YAG plate as the output coupler, and the corresponding polarization extinction ratio of laser beam increases with incident pump power and then saturates at larger pump power. For comparison, the output coupler of the fiber laser is replaced by 10% reflectivity plane mirror, while the feature of the polarization of laser output is kept unchanged. The results show that the origin of the pump-dependent and self-started polarization is associated with the intensity-dependent nonlinear birefringence in the gain fiber.

We have compared the adsorption behaviors between single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) powders and thin films with amino acids such as phenylalanine and glycine by using the X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy. On SWCNT powders very weak adsorption occurs as confirmed also by studies at high solution concentrations. The comparison of the adsorption behaviors with previous reports for thin films of SWCNTs shows that, due to their compact structure, thin films favor the adsorption of amino acids and represent themselves good candidate for a reliable evaluation of the interaction among amino acids and SWCNTs.

In order to describe the effect of latent hardening on the macro-plastic behavior of foc-crystal, a new expression for hardening coefficient is proposed in which there are 12 material constants, each having clear physical meaning. And a method of material constant calibration is suggested and used to determine the material constants of copper and aluminum crystal. The simulated load-elongation curves along various crystallographic orientations are comparable with the experimental ones.

Observations play a leading role in any branches of astronomy, including solar physics. In order to solve fundamental problems, such as solar dynamo [1], coronal heating [2] and the triggering of major solar eruptions [3], solar observations with spatial resolution better than 0.1 arcsec are required. Such a goal cannot be achieved without the help of adaptive optics （AO）, which eliminates the wavefront distortion caused by atmosphere turbulence [4,5]. However, solar observations are performed over an extended field of view （FoV）. Flare trigger mechanisms operate rapidly and on the smallest spatial scales and their location within the FoV is difficult to predict.

In order to avoid stimulated Brillouin scattering and smooth the final focal spot that reaches the D-T capsule,spectral broadening is ***,the modulation of spectral structure might result in frequency-to-amplitude modulation（FM-to-AM） *** spatial filter pinhole is used to cut off the high-frequency transmission laser,and to ensure the desired *** parameter of pinhole would lead a negative *** the spatial filter pinhole,we analyze the characteristic of intensity modulation using several pinholes of improper *** then compare these results with the intensity modulation obtained from an *** diagnosis and design of an appropriate pinhole parameter would be highly beneficial to the field of high-power lasers.

Giant enhancement of magnetocaloric effect in metallic glass matrix composite

The magnetocaloric effect (MCE) has made great success in very low temperature refrigeration, which is highly desirable for application to the extended higher tem-perature range. Here we report the giant enhancement of MCE in the metallic glass composite. The large magnetic refrigerant capacity (RC) up to 103 J·kg-1 is more than double the RC of the well-known crystalline magnetic refrigerant compound Gd5Si2Ge1.9Fe0.1 (357 J·kg-1) and MnFeP0.45As0.55 (390 J·kg-1)(containing either ex-orbitant-cost Ge or poisonous As). The full width at half maximum of the magnetic entropy change (ΔSm) peak almost spreads over the whole low-temperature range (from 303 to 30 K), which is five times wider than that of the Gd5Si2Ge1.9Fe0.1 and pure Gd. The maximum ΔSm approaches a nearly constant value in a wide tem-perature span over 100 K, and however, such a broad table-like region near room temperature has seldom been found in alloys and compounds. In combination with the intrinsic amorphous nature, the metallic glass composite may be potential for the ideal Ericsson-cycle magnetic refrigeration over a broad temperature range near room temperature.
