Research progress on the soil vapor extraction

Soil vapor extraction (SVE), the most common, efficient and economical means of remediation, is an in-situ remediation technique for removing volatile pollutants from unsaturated soil. The paper brie fly introduced the technological rationale and characteristics, summarized the theories and application research for SVE at home and abroad, and made the expectations and suggestions for the research on SVE. The international scholars have systematically researched the influence factors, remediation mechanism and numerical simulation of SVE. At present, SVE has been mostly integrated with other techniques to form enhanced SVE techniques, such as thermally enhanced SVE and AS-SVE (Air sparging- SVE), to be used for the field remediation widely. Compared with foreign countries, researches of Chinese scholars mainly focus on the laboratory research, especially on the influence factors, but rarely study the SVE model and the mass transfer mechanism of pollutant in SVE process. The SVE pilot studies are rare in China, and the field application has not been reported. In view of this situation, Chinese scholars in the future research can focus on the following aspects: (1) strengthening the research and systematized summary of SVE technical parameters and related knowledge;(2) strengthening the research on the mechanism and model of gas-phase mass transfer of pollutants in soil during SVE process;(3) strengthening the research on the enhanced SVE techniques and its application to actual site remediation.

Structure of the Crust Beneath the South Western Cameroon, from Gravity Data Analysis

The study area is located in the south western Cameroon and includes part of the Cameroon Volcanic Line (CVL). Volcanic activity has been recorded in this area, precisely on the Mount Cameroon which recently erupted in 2002. In addition, deadly carbonic gas was emitted by crater lakes (Monoun and Nyos) in 1984 and 1986 respectively. Potential field model EGM2008 has been used to investigate the structure of the crust. A regional/residual separation is performed using upward continuation and polynomial separation methods. The results from this operation show a similarity between the regional anomalies resulting from both methods. The regional anomaly maps present an increasing gradient trending ENE-WSW above and below latitude 5?N. Moreover, six nearly parallel profiles were drawn on the CVL in addition to two other profiles at the northern edge of Congo craton. These profiles were used to estimate the depths of the Moho discontinuity and some shallow sources by the means of the Bouguer and the residual anomalies respectively. The results show that the Moho discontinuity depths vary from 19 - 25 km (under Mount Cameroon) to 28 - 34 km (in Kumbo), while the southern neighbouring zone presents a Moho discontinuity depth ranging between 23 - 31 km (in Ngambe) and 22 - 32 km (in Eseka). These findings agree with the previous seismic and gravity researches lead in the area. EGM2008 is therefore a reliable tool to investigate the subsurface structures.

The covered karst, weathering crust and karst (double-level) planation surface

The thick-bedded and continuous karst crust only formed in the old stage of geomorphic development. The corresponding landscape is the karst planation surface. The karst planation surface consists of the loose weathering crust and the base weathering front below the crust. Its profile structure is similar to 'double surface of leveling' model built by Budel. In the limestone area, the base weathering front is the covered karst. From the Tibet Plateau to Yun-Gui (yunnan- Guizhou) plateau and Xiang-Gui (Hunan-Guangxi) hills, the covered karst is concomitant with the red weathering crust; all of them are the component of the double-level surfaces of karst planation. But, they belong to the different disintegration stages of planation surface. The different subtypes of the covered karst and the red weathering crust indicate the existence of karst planation surface. Thus, they can be made as a reference system when the rising degree and the rising rate of the Tibet Plateau are discussed.

Geographical patterns based on faunal types of breeding birds and mammals in China

We collected available chorological data of birds and mammals in China and assigned faunal *** 19 sub-regions of the zoogeographical regions of China were used as operative geographical *** of the geo-graphical units using the species number of each faunal type were then *** on the matrices we clustered the geographical units using a hierarchical cluster analysis The results of the faunal divisions according to the cluster analysis were illustrated in a geographic information system(GIS).When 19 geographical units were clustered into two clusters,the boundary of the two clusters corresponded to that of the Palearctic and Indomalayan(Oriental)realms in the recent division of Chinese *** the geographical units were clustered into eight clusters,the sub-region Southern yunnan Hilly became an idiographic *** a result,Southern yunnan hilly should be regarded as a region rather than a sub-region at the same level as Southwest region,Central China region and South China *** differences in the distribution patterns of birds and mammals among the units in the Indomalayan(Oriental)realm were more complicated than those in Palearctic *** differences of the cluster analysis results based on the faunal types were found between the bird and mammal *** differences might result from the different ecological and geographical distribution patterns of these two animal categories.

Observing and timing a group of millisecond pulsars with high rotational stability enables the direct detection of gravitational waves(GWs).The GW signals can be identified from the spatial correlations encoded in the times-of-arrival of widely spaced *** Chinese Pulsar Timing Array(CPTA)is a collaboration aiming at the direct GW detection with observations carried out using Chinese radio *** short article serves as a“table of contents”for a forthcoming series of papers related to the CPTA Data Release 1(CPTA DR1)which uses observations from the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio ***,after summarizing the time span and accuracy of CPTA DR1,we report the key results of our statistical inference finding a correlated signal with amplitude logA_(c)=-14.4_(-2.8)^(+1.0)for spectral index in the range ofα∈[-1.8,1.5]assuming a GW background(GWB)induced quadrupolar *** search for the Hellings–Downs(HD)correlation curve is also presented,where some evidence for the HD correlation has been found that a 4.6σstatistical significance is achieved using the discrete frequency method around the frequency of 14 n *** expect that the future international Pulsar Timing Array data analysis and the next CPTA data release will be more sensitive to the n Hz GWB,which could verify the current results.

The COVID-19 Pandemic: A Double Threat to Chinese Americans’ Mental Health

Objective:To explore the double psychosocial threats of the COVID-19 pandemic,targeted behavior toward Chinese Americans,and the correlates to their mental ***:A quantitative,cross-sectional,and descriptive design was utilized by using a purposive convenience sample of 301 Chinese Americans over the age of 18 residing in the United *** data collection was conducted through the social media platform WeChat from April 8–21,*** statistical analysis was used for the participants’demographic charac-teristics,Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support(MSPSS),Double Threat Situations,COVID-19 Racial Discrimination,and General Anxiety Disorder-7(GAD-7).Stepwise logistic regression was conducted to verify predictors for anxiety levels by ***:In this sample(N=301),127(42.19%)were male and 174(57.81%)were *** average age was 41.67(SD=5.89).Among MSPSS subscales,social support from family(MSPSS-Fam,79.73%,n=240)and social support from significant others(MSPSS-SO,73.75%,n=222)were high.231(76.74%)reported threats due to their Chinese ethnic background during the COVID-19 *** for the high anxiety level by GAD-7 were COVID-19 racial discrimination from the local community(OR=0.47,95%CI=0.39–0.71,p<0.001),media/online(OR=0.36,95%CI=0.26–0.53,p<0.001),the perceived threat from the COVID-19 virus(OR=0.33,95%CI=0.23–0.51,p<0.001)and Perceived racism threat from Chinese back-ground related to COVID-19(OR=0.31,95%CI=0.21–0.49,p<0.001).Conclusions:COVID-19 double-threats(The virus and racial discrimination)situations are significantly related to the high level of anxiety among Chinese *** sense of belonging and social perceptions of Chinese immigrants is closely related to public health problems in Western societies and needs to be addressed at all *** call for the attention of health-care workers to specific racism double-threatened situations and high mental health risks,as well as direc

AIM: To identify the most-cited articles in ophthalmic epidemiology over the last ***: We performed a cited reference search on articles that were included in the ISI Web of Science database using the terms "Epidemi*" AND "ophthalm*" AND "population*" during year 2006 to 2016. TOP 100 most cited articles(T100) in ophthalmic epidemiology were short listed and analysed using ***: These top 100 articles in ophthalmic epidemiology were cited between 61 to 333 times. Of these T100 articles, 36% originated from United States, and 34% were published in the Ophthalmology journal. The three major topics identified were age-related macular degeneration(AMD, n=23), glaucoma(n=16) and visual impairment(n=12). The top-cited article was a study on outdoor activities and its association with the prevalence of myopia in school-aged children, published in 2008. CONCLUSION: This bibliometric analysis provides useful insights into the current development in ophthalmicepidemiology in the past decade and can help recognizing the quality of the researches, discoveries, and trends steering ophthalmic epidemiology.

Effect of the Real Irregular Terrain on the Lightning-radiated Electromagnetic Field Propagation

The propagation of the lightning-radiated electromagnetic field along the real irregular terrain around Yangzhou Direction Finder(DF)site(119°42′E,32°39′N)and Nanjing DF site(118°46′E,32°03′N)of Jiangsu Province in China is *** results show that the rough irregular terrain results in the rapid magnitude attenuation and the increase of the rise-time of the field *** example,for the Yangzhou DF site as the circumference of a radius of 45 km,the root-mean-squared height(RMSH)of the real irregular terrain varies from 7 to 33 m;the extra field attenuation relative to the ideal ground surface ranges from 1%to 11%,and the extra rise-time increment varies from 0.1 to 0.6μ***,the extracted current peak of lightning return stroke may be underestimated from the remotely measured electromagnetic field,and the error varies along with different azimuths.
