Reticulate evolution through the interchanging of genetic components across organisms can impact significantly on the fitness and adaptation of *** wheat(Triticum aestivum ***)is one of the most important crops in the *** speci ation,frequent hybridization,extensive introgression,and occasional horizontal gene transfer(HGT)have been shaping a typical paradigm of reticulate evolution in bread wheat and its wild relatives,which is likely to have a sub-stantial influence on phenotypic traits and environmental adaptability of bread *** this review,we outlined the evolutionary history of bread wheat and its wild relatives with a highlight on the interspecific hybridization events,demonstrating the reticulate relationship between species/sub-species in the genera Triticum and ***,we discussed the genetic mechanisms and evolutionary significance underlying the introgression of bread wheat and its wild *** in-depth understanding of the evolutionary process of Triticum species should be beneficial to future genetic study and breeding of bread wheat.

Despite serving as a major inorganic nitrogen source for plants,ammonium causes toxicity at elevated con-centrations,inhibiting root elongation early *** previous studies have shown that ammonium-inhibited root development relates to ammonium uptake and formation of reactive oxygen species(ROS)in roots,it remains unclear about the mechanisms underlying the repression of root growth and how plants cope with this inhibitory effect of *** this study,we demonstrate that ammonium-induced apo-plastic acidification co-localizes with Fe precipitation and hydrogen peroxide(H_(2)O_(2))accumulation along the stele of the elongation and differentiation zone in root tips,indicating Fe-dependent ROS *** screening ammonium sensitivity in T-DNA insertion lines of ammonium-responsive genes,we identified PDX1.1,which is upregulated by ammonium in the root stele and whose product catalyzes de novo biosyn-thesis of vitamin *** growth of pdx1.1 mutants is hypersensitive to ammonium,while chemical complementation or overexpression of PDX1.1 restores root *** salvage strategy requires non-phosphorylated forms of vitamin B6 that are able to quench ROS and rescue root growth from ammo-nium ***,these results suggest that PDX1.1-mediated synthesis of non-phosphorylated B6 vitamers acts as a primary strategy to protect roots from ammonium-dependent ROS formation.

Resistant starch(RS),a healthy dietary fiber,is a particular type of starch that has attracted much research attention in recent *** has important roles in reducing glycemic index,postprandial blood glucose levels,and serum cholesterol levels,thereby improving and preventing many diseases,such as diabetes,obesity,and cardiovascular *** formation of RS is influenced by intrinsic properties of starch(e.g.,starch granule structure,starch crystal structure,and amylose-to-amylopectin ratio)and non-starch components(e.g.,proteins,lipids,and sugars),aswell as storage and processing *** studies have revealed that several starch-synthesis-related genes(SSRGs)are crucial for the formation of RS during seed *** transcription factors and mRNA splicing factors have been shown to affect the expression or splicing of SSRGs that regulate RS content,suggesting their potential roles in RS *** review focuses mainly on recent research progress on the genetic regulation of RS content and discusses the emerging genetic and molecular mechanisms of RS formation in rice.

The interaction between plants and pathogens represents a dynamic competition between a robust immune system and efficient infectious strategies. plant innate immunity is composed of complex and highly regulated molecular networks, which can be triggered by the perception of either conserved or race-specific pathogenic molecular signatures. Small RNAs are emerging as versatile regulators of plant development, growth and response to biotic and abiotic stresses. They act in different tiers of plant immunity, including the pathogen-associated molecular pattern-triggered and the effector-triggered immunity. On the other hand, pathogens have evolved effector molecules to suppress or hijack the host small RNA pathways. This leads to an arms race between plants and pathogens at the level of small RNA-mediated defense. Here, we review recent advances in small RNA-mediated defense responses and discuss the challenging questions in this area.

Characterization of Arabidopsis calreticulin mutants in response to calcium and salinity stresses

As an important calcium-binding protein,calreticulin plays an important role in regulating calcium homeostasis in endoplasmic retic- ulum (ER) of ***,we identified three loss-of-function mutants of calreticulin genes in Arabidopsis to demonstrate the function of calreticulin in response to calcium and salinity *** are three genes encoding calreticulin in Arabidopsis,and they are named AtCRT1,2,and 3,*** found that both single mutant of crt3 and double mutant of crtl crt2 were more sensitive to low calcium environment than wild-type ***,crt3 mutant showed more sensitivity to salt treatment at germination stage, but tolerance to salt stress at later stage compared with wild-type ***,there was no obvious growth difference in the mutant crtl and crt2 compared with wild-type Arabidopsis under calcium and salt *** results suggest that calreticulin functions in plant responses to calcium and salt stresses.

In both unicellular and multicellular organisms, transmembrane （TM） proteins are sorted to and retained at specific membrane domains by endomembrane trafficking mechanisms that recognize sorting signals in the these proteins. The trafficking and distribution of plasma membrane （PM）-localized TM proteins （PM proteins）, especially of those PM proteins that show an asymmetric distribution over the PM, has received much attention, as their proper PM localization is crucial for elementary signaling and transport processes, and defects in their localization often lead to severe disease symptoms or developmental defects. The subcellular localization of PM proteins is dynamically regulated by post-translational modifications, such as phosphorylation and ubiquitination. These modificaitons mostly occur on sorting signals that are located in the larger cytosolic domains of the cargo proteins. Here we review the effects of phosphorylation of PM proteins on their trafficking, and present the key examples from the animal field that have been subject to studies for already several decades, such as that of aquaporin 2 and the epidermal growth factor receptor. Our knowledge on cargo trafficking in plants is largely based on studies of the family of PIN FORMED （PIN） carriers that mediate the efflux of the plant hormone auxin. We will review what is known on the subcellular distribution and trafficking of PIN proteins, with a focus on how this is modulated by phosphorylation, and identify and discuss analogies and differences in trafficking with the well-studied animal examples.

The reproductive success of flowering plants,which directly affects crop yield,is sensitive to environmental changes.A thorough understanding of how crop reproductive development adapts to climate changes is vital for ensuring global food *** addition to being a high-value vegetable crop,tomato is also a model plant used for research on plant reproductive *** crops are cultivated under highly diverse climatic conditions *** crosses of hybrid varieties have resulted in increased yields and abiotic stress resistance;however,tomato reproduction,especially male reproductive development,is sensitive to temperature fluctuations,which can lead to aborted male gametophytes,with detrimental effects on fruit *** herein review the cytological features as well as genetic and molecular pathways influencing tomato male reproductive organ development and responses to abiotic *** also compare the shared features among the associated regulatory mechanisms of tomato and other ***,this review highlights the opportunities and challenges related to characterizing and exploiting genic male sterility in tomato hybrid breeding programs.

Long noncoding RNAs （IncRNAs） participate in the regulation of multiple biological processes via diverse manners, one of which is functioning as endogenous target mimics （eTMs） to modulate microRNAs （miRNAs） by competing for their targets. Previously, we have predicted one IncRNA （osa-eTM160） as an endogenous repressor of osa-miR160 and validated the target mimicry ability of osa-eTM160 for ath-miR160 in Arabidopsis thaliana, yet the functions of osa-eTM160 in rice remain obscure. Here, we demonstrated that osa-eTM160 attenuated the repression of osa-miR160 on osa-ARF18 mRNAs during early anther developmental stages through the target mimicry manner, therefore to regulate rice seed setting and seed size. These findings revealed the roles of osa-eTM160 in rice, and indicated that lncRNAs with eTM functions may serve as temporal regulators to modulate the effects of miRNAs at specific developmental stages.
