The ubiquitin-proteasome system(UPS)is an important post-translational regulatory mechanism that controls many cellular functions in ***,we show that stable expression of P3 protein encoded by Rice grassy stunt virus(RGSV),a negative-strand RNA virus in the Bunyavirales,causes developmental abnormities similar to the disease symptoms caused by RGSV,such as dwarfing and excess tillering,in transgenic rice *** found that both transgenic expression of P3 and RGSV infection induce ubiquitination and UPS-dependent degradation of rice NUCLEAR RNA POLYMERASE D1a(OsNRPD1a),one of two orthologs of the largest subunit of plant-specific RNA polymerase IV(Pol IV),which is required for RNA-directed DNA methylation(RdDM).Furthermore,we identified a P3-inducible U-box type E3 ubiquitin ligase,designated as P3-inducible protein 1(P3IP1),which interacts with OsNRPD1a and mediates its ubiquitination and UPS-dependent degradation in vitro and in ***,both knockdown of OsNRPD1 and overexpression of P3IP1 in rice plants induced developmental phenotypes similar to RGSV disease *** together,our findings reveal a novel virulence mechanism whereby plant pathogens target host RNA Pol IV for UPS-dependent degradation to induce disease *** study also identified an E3 ubiquitin ligase,which targets the RdDM compotent NRPD1 for UPS-mediated degradation in rice.

Gene Networks in plant Ozone Stress Response and Tolerance

For many plant species ozone stress has become much more severe in the last decade. The accumulating evidence for the significant effects of ozone pollutant on crop and forest yield situate ozone as one of the most important environmental stress factors that limits plant productivity worldwide. Today, transcriptomic approaches seem to give the best coverage of genome level responses. Therefore, microarray serves as an invaluable tool for global gene expression analyses, unravelling new information about gene pathways, in-species and cross-species gene expression comparison, and for the characterization of unknown relationships between genes. In this review we summarize the recent progress in the transcriptomics of ozone to demonstrate the benefits that can be harvested from the application of integrative and systematic analytical approaches to study ozone stress response. We focused our consideration on microarray analyses identifying gene networks responsible for response and tolerance to elevated ozone concentration. From these analyses it is now possible to notice how plant ozone defense responses depend on the interplay between many complex signaling pathways and metabolite signals.

PtrHB7, a class III HD-Zip Gene, Plays a Critical Role in Regulation of Vascular Cambium Differentiation in Populus

A key question in the secondary growth of trees is how differentiation of the vascular cambium cells is directed to concurrently form two different tissues： xylem or phloem, class III homeodomain-leucine zipper （HD-Zip III） genes are known to play critical roles in the initiation, patterning, and differentiation of the vascular system in the process of primary and secondary growth. However, the mechanism of how these genes control secondary vascular dif- ferentiation is unknown. Here, we show that a Populus class III HD-Zip gene, PtrHB7, was preferentially expressed in cambial zone. PtrHB7-suppressed plants displayed significant changes in vascular tissues with a reduction in xylem but increase in phloem. Transcriptional analysis revealed that genes regulating xylem differentiation were down-regulated, whereas genes regulating phloem differentiation were up-regulated. Correspondingly, PtrHB7 overexpression enhanced differentiation of cambial cells toward xylem cells but inhibited phloem differentiation. PtrHB7 regulation on cambial cell differentiation was associated with its transcript abundance. Together, the results demonstrated that PtrHB7 plays a critical role in controlling a balanced differentiation between secondary xylem and phloem tissues in the process of Populus secondary growth in a dosage-dependent manner.

Gibberellins （GAs） are essential phytohormones regulating many aspects of plant growth and development. Manipulation of GA status either by genetic alteration or by exogenous application of GA or GA biosynthesis inhibitors are common strategies used to optimize plant growth and crop yields. Rice （Oryza sativa） is a major source of calories and mineral nutrients, feeding more than half of the human population. With the challenges of feeding an increasing population and decreasing availability of arable land, improving productivity and yields of rice crop has always been an ultimate goal for breeders.

Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated transformation of rice with the spider insecticidal gene conferring resistance to leaffolder and striped stem borer

Immature embryos of rice varieties 'Xiushui11' and 'Chunjiang 11' precultured for 4d were infected and transformed by Agrobacterium tumefaciens strain EHA101/pExT7 (containing the spider insecticidal gene). The resistant cant were transferred onto the differentiation medium and plants were regenerated. The transformation frequency reached 56%-72% measured as numbers of Geneticin (G418)-resistant calli produced and 36%-60% measured as numbers of transgenic plants regenerated, respectively. PCR and Southern blot analysis of transgenic plants confirmed that the T-DNA had been integrated into the rice genome. Insect bioassays using T1 transgenic plants indicated that the mortality of the leaffolder (Cnaphalocrasis medinalis) after 7d of leaf feeding reached 38%-61% and the corrected mortality of the striped stem borer (Chilo suppressalis) after 7d of leaf feeding reached 16%-75%. The insect bioassay results demonstrated that the transgenic plants expressing the spider insecticidal protein conferred enhanced resistance to these pests.

The paper presents the results of a study of salt tolerance in some different eco-geographical samples of the cotton germplasm collection of the Institute of Genetics and Experimental Biology of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan. According to the results obtained, the studied samples were divided into several groups depending on their salt tolerance. Salt tolerant and unstable samples were found in all studied ecological and geographical groups, but differed in the frequency of distribution.

Cytokinin plays a critical role in plant growth and development by regulating cell divisions and cell differentiation. Recent studies suggest that cytokinin signaling is presumably mediated by a two-component system analogous to those found in bacteria and fungi, which transduces an external signal via a phosphorelay from the plasma membrane-anchored receptors to downstream effectors and regulators. Moreover, cytokinin signaling is highly interactive with other pathways, and many components of the pathway appear to be functionally redundant. Proper address of these questions will be crucial for our further understanding on this important network.
