Endotoxin-induced alterations of adipose tissue function:a pathway to bovine metabolic stress

During the periparturient period, dairy cows exhibit negative energy balance due to limited appetite and increased energy requirements for lactogenesis. The delicate equilibrium between energy availability and expenditure puts cows in a state of metabolic stress characterized by excessive lipolysis in white adipose tissues(AT), increased production of reactive oxygen species, and immune cell dysfunction. Metabolic stress, especially in AT, increases the risk for metabolic and inflammatory diseases. Around parturition, cows are also susceptible to endotoxemia. Bacterial-derived toxins cause endotoxemia by promoting inflammatory processes and immune cell infiltration in different organs and systems while impacting metabolic function by altering lipolysis, mitochondrial activity, and insulin sensitivity. In dairy cows, endotoxins enter the bloodstream after overcoming the defense mechanisms of the epithelial barriers, particularly during common periparturient conditions such as mastitis, metritis, and pneumonia, or after abrupt changes in the gut microbiome. In the bovine AT, endotoxins induce a pro-inflammatory response and stimulate lipolysis in AT, leading to the release of free fatty acids into the bloodstream. When excessive and protracted, endotoxin-induced lipolysis can impair adipocyte's insulin signaling pathways and lipid synthesis. Endotoxin exposure can also induce oxidative stress in AT through the production of reactive oxygen species by inflammatory cells and other cellular components. This review provides insights into endotoxins' impact on AT function, highlighting the gaps in our knowledge of the mechanisms underlying AT dysfunction, its connection with periparturient cows' disease risk, and the need to develop effective interventions to prevent and treat endotoxemia-related inflammatory conditions in dairy cattle.

Mechanisms to explain soil liquefaction triggering, development, and persistence during an earthquake

Mechanisms have been proposed to explain the triggering, development, and persistence of soil liquefaction. The mechanism explaining the horizontal failure plane (triggering) and its depth below the phreatic surface is governed by the flux properties and effective stress at that plane. At the failure plane, the pore water pressure was higher than the effective stress, and the volume change was the highest. The pore water pressure is a function of the soil profile features (particularly the phreatic zone width) and bedrock motion (horizontal acceleration). The volume change at the failure plane is a function of the intrinsic permeability of the soil and bedrock displacement. The failure plane was predicted to occur during the oscillation with the highest amplitude, disregarding further bedrock motion, which was consistent with low seismic energy densities. Two mechanisms were proposed to explain the persistence of soil liquefaction. The first is the existence of low-permeability layers in the depth range in which the failure planes are predicted to occur. The other allows for the persistence and development of soil liquefaction; it is consistent with homogeneous soils and requires water inflow from bedrock water springs. The latter explains many of the features of soil liquefaction observed during earthquakes, namely, surficial effects, “instant” liquefaction, and the occurrence of short- and long-term changes in the level of the phreatic surfaces. This model (hypothesis), the relationship between the flux characteristics and loss of soil shear strength, provides self-consistent constraints on the depth below the phreatic surfaces where the failure planes are observed (expected to occur). It requires further experimental and observational evidence. Similar reasoning can be used to explain other saturated soil phenomena. © 2023 The Authors

Photocatalytic oxidation of methane to methanol over zinc titanate supported silver catalysts

The direct activation of methane under mild condition to achieve highly selective of oxygenates is a challenging *** this study,a well dispersed silver supported ZnTiO_(3) catalyst was prepared to achieve selective preparation of methanol from methane and water under mild condition.X-ray diffraction,transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy characterizations demonstrate that silver species are uniformly dispersed on ZnTiO_(3) surface in the form of metallic silver *** photoelectric characterizations reveal that the addition of silver species enhances light absorption and promotes charge separation of the *** the reaction conditions of 50℃and 3 MPa,the methanol is obtained as the only liquid product over the designed Ag/ZnTiO_(3) catalyst under light *** this photocatalytic process,the holes generated by ZnTiO_(3) activate water to produce intermediate·OH,which further reacts with methane to synthesize *** silver species as co-catalysts extend the light absorption range of ZnTiO_(3) as well as promote charge separation.

This study investigates the effects of Fe on the oxygen-evolution reaction(OER)in the presence of *** distinct areas of OER were identified:the first associated with Fe sites at low overpotential(~330 mV),and the second with Au sites at high overpotential(~870 mV).Various factors such as surface Fe concentration,electrochemical method,scan rate,potential range,concentration,method of adding K_(2)Fe O_(4),nature of Fe,and temperature were varied to observe diverse behaviors during OER for Fe O_(x)H_(y)/*** amounts of Fe ions had a significant impact on OER,reaching a saturation point where the activity did not increase *** electronic interaction between Fe and Au ions was indicated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS)and electron paramagnetic resonance(EPR)*** situ visible spectroscopy confirmed the formation of Fe O_(4)^(2-)during *** situ Mossbauer and surfaceenhanced Raman spectroscopy(SERS)analyses suggest the involvement of Fe-based species as intermediates during the rate-determining step of OER.A lattice OER mechanism based on Fe O_(x)H_(y)was proposed for operation at low *** functional theory(DFT)calculations revealed that Fe oxide,Fe-oxide clusters,and Fe doping on the Au foil exhibited different activities and stabilities during *** study provides insights into the interplay between Fe and Au in OER,advancing the understanding of OER mechanisms and offering implications for the design of efficient electrocatalytic systems.

Fingerprinting sulfur speciation in aprotic electrolytes is a key to understand fundamental chemistry and design well-performing lithium–sulfur(Li–S)*** polysulfide(LiPS)dissolution and deposition in ether-based electrolytes during redox reactions have been probed and established by spectroscopy and ***,detailed LiPS structure and solvation properties influenced by conventional and newly developed electrolytes remain elusive,which exert fundamental challenges and practical difficulties in decoupling battery performance from electrolyte *** perspective aims to provide timely information to uncover underlying mechanisms that rein in sulfur speciation by considering the charge density of LiPSs and the coordination strength of solvents/*** discussion starts with unlocking the baseline electrolyte formulation to investigate its role in LiPS formation and *** that,the term coordination strength is used instead of donor number and dielectric constant to describe interactions between solvents and LiPSs and to reveal LiPS structure *** work is expected to encourage the discovery of new electrolyte working mechanisms to develop energy-dense and power-intensive Li–S batteries.

Geochemical and petrological studies of high sulfur coal and overburden from Makum coalfield (Northeast India) towards understanding and mitigation of acid mine drainage

Opencast coal mining produces trash of soil and rock containing various minerals,that are usually dumped nearby the abandoned sites which causes severe environmental concern including the production of acid mine drainage(AMD)through oxidation pyrite *** current study entailed assessing the potential production of AMD from an opencast coal mining region in Northeast part of *** order to have a comprehensive overview of the AMD problem in Makum coalfield,the physico-chemical,geochemical,and petrological characteristics of the coal and overburden(OB)samples collected from the Makum coalfield(Northeast India)were thoroughly *** maceral compositions reveal that coal features all three groups of macerals(liptinite,vitrinite,and inertinite),with a high concentration of liptinite indicating the coal of perhydrous,thereby rendering it more ***(FeS_(2))oxidation kinetics were studied by conducting the aqueous leaching experiments of coal and(OB)samples to interpret the chemical weathering under controlled laboratory conditions of various temperature and time periods,and to replicate the actual mine site *** coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy(ICP-OES)was operated to detect the disposal of some precarious elements from coal and OB samples to the leachates during our controlled leaching *** Rare earth element(REE)enrichment in the samples shows the anthropogenic incorporation of the REE in the coal and *** experiments reveal the change in conductivity,acid producing tendency,total dissolved solid(TDS),total Iron(Fe)and dissolved Sulfate(SO_(4)^(2−))ions on progress of the leaching ***,the discharge of FeS_(2) via atmospheric oxidation in laboratory condition undergoes a significant growth with the rise of temperature of the reaction systems in the environment and follows pseudo first order kinetics.A bio-remediative strategies is also reported in this paper to mitigate AMD water by
