Variations and future projections of glacial discharge of Urumqi River Headwaters,eastern Tien Shan(1980s-2017)

To address data scarcity on long-term glacial discharge and inadequacies in simulating and predicting hydrological processes in the Tien Shan,this study analysed the observed discharge at multiple timescales over 1980se2017 and projected changes within a representative glacierized high-mountain region:eastern Tien Shan,Central *** processes were simulated to predict changes under four future scenarios(SSP1,SSP2,SSP3,and SSP5)using a classical hydrological model coupled with a glacier dynamics *** rates at annual,monthly(June,July,August)and daily timescales were obtained from two hydrological gauges:Urumqi Glacier No.1 hydrological station(UGH)and Zongkong station(ZK).Overall,annual and summer discharge increased significantly(p<0.05)at both stations over the study *** intra-annual variations mainly resulted from differences in their recharge *** simulations show that a tipping point in annual discharge at UGH may occur between 2018 and 2024 under the four SSPs *** discharge is predicted to cease earlier at ZK than at *** relates to glacier type and size,suggesting basins with heavily developed small glaciers will reach peak discharge sooner,resulting in an earlier freshwater supply *** findings serve as a reference for research into glacial runoff in Central Asia and provide a decision-making basis for planning local water-resource projects.

El Niño and the AMO Sparked the Astonishingly Large Margin of Warming in the Global Mean Surface Temperature in 2023

In 2023,the majority of the Earth witnessed its warmest boreal summer and autumn since *** 2023 will indeed turn out to be the warmest year on record and what caused the astonishingly large margin of warming has become one of the hottest topics in the scientific community and is closely connected to the future development of human *** analyzed the monthly varying global mean surface temperature(GMST)in 2023 and found that the globe,the land,and the oceans in 2023 all exhibit extraordinary warming,which is distinct from any previous year in recorded *** on the GMST statistical ensemble prediction model developed at the institute of Atmospheric Physics,the GMST in 2023 is predicted to be 1.41℃±0.07℃,which will certainly surpass that in 2016 as the warmest year since 1850,and is approaching the 1.5℃ global warming *** to 2022,the GMST in 2023 will increase by 0.24℃,with 88%of the increment contributed by the annual variability as mostly affected by El Niñ***,the multidecadal variability related to the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation(AMO)in 2023 also provided an important warming background for sparking the GMST *** a result,the GMST in 2023 is projected to be 1.15℃±0.07℃,with only a 0.02℃ increment,if the effects of natural variability—including El Niño and the AMO—are eliminated and only the global warming trend is considered.

Wildfires over permafrost put perennially frozen carbon at ***,wildfire emissions from biomass burning over the diverse range of permafrost regions and their share in global wildfire emissions have not been *** results showed a dramatic increase in wildfire carbon emissions from permafrost regions over the period 1997–*** share of permafrost in global wildfire CO_(2) emissions increased from 2.42%in 1997 to 20.86%in *** wildfire emissions from continuous permafrost region is the single largest contributor to increased emissions in northern permafrost ***-induced emissions from 2019 to 2021 alone accounted for approximately 40%of the 25-year total CO_(2) emissions from continuous permafrost *** rise in wildfire emissions from continuous permafrost regions is explained by desiccation within a 5–10 cm soil depth,where wildfires combust belowground *** findings highlight the acceleration of fire-induced carbon emissions from continuous permafrost regions,which disturb the organic carbon stock and accelerate the positive feedback between permafrost degradation and climate warming,thus stimulating permafrost towards a climatic tipping point.

Heatwaves(HWs)present a major hazard to our society and more extreme heatwaves are expected with future climatic ***,it is important to improve our understanding of the underlying processes that drive HWs,in order to boost our socioeconomic-ecological *** this study,we quantified the influences of key driving factors(large-scale atmospheric circulation,soil moisture,and sea surface temperature)and their synergies on recent heatwaves in East *** conducted a factor separation analysis for three recent HW events by constraining the key factors in the regional Weather Research and Forecasting model with their climatologies or pseudo-observations in different *** study showed distinct spatial variations in the HW-controlling factors in East *** synergistic interaction of large-scale circulation and soil moisture was the most important factors in the 2013 Chinese *** the 2018 HWs in Korea and Japan,the same stagnant large-scale atmospheric circulation played a dominant role in driving the HW *** land-atmosphere coupling via soil moisture,its interaction with circulation,and SST exhibited stronger influences during the Korean HW than the Japanese *** analysis also revealed temporal variations in the factors driving Korean and Chinese HWs due to typhoon passage and other multiple processes over heterogeneous surfaces(i.e.,topographically induced Foehn winds,large-scale warm advection from the warm ocean,spatial differences in soil moisture).Our findings suggest that future heatwave-related studies should consider interactive contributions of key factors,their interplay with surface heterogeneities of complex terrain.

Evaluation of the energy budget of thermokarst lake in permafrost regions of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

Thermokarst lake formation accelerates permafrost degradation due to climate warming,thereby releasing significant amounts of carbon into the atmosphere,complicating hydrological cycles,and causing environmental ***,the energy transfer mechanism from the surface to the sediment of thermokarst lakes remains largely unexplored,thereby limiting our understanding of the magnitude and duration of biogeochemical processes and hydrological ***,herein,a typical thermokarst lake situated in the center of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau(QTP)was selected for observation and energy budget *** results showed that the net radiation of the thermokarst lake surface was 95.1,156.9,and 32.3 W m^(-2) for the annual,ice-free,and ice-covered periods,respectively,and was approximately 76%of the net radiation consumed by latent heat *** in heat storage in the thermokarst lake initially increased from January to April,then decreased from April to December,with a maximum change of 48.1 W m^(-2) in *** annual average heat fuxes from lake water to sediments were 1.4 W m^(-2);higher heat fluxes occurred during the ice-free season at a range of 4.9-12.0 W m^(-2).The imbalance between heat absorption and release in the millennium scale caused the underlying permafrost of the thermokarst lake to completely *** present,the ground temperature beneath the lake bottom at a depth of 15 m has reached 2.0℃.The temperatures and vapor-pressure conditions of air and lake surfaces control the energy budget of the thermokarst *** findings indicate that changes in the hydrologic regime shifts and biogeochemical processes are more frequent under climate warming and permafrost degradation.

Process-driven susceptibility assessment of glacial lake outburst debris flow in the Himalayas under climate change

Global warming is causing glaciers to retreat and glacial lakes to expand in the Himalayas,which amplifies the risk of glacial lake outburst debris flows(GLODFs)and poses a significant threat to downstream lives and ***,the complex interplay between GLODF occurrences and associated indicators,coupled with the lack of a comprehensive susceptibility indicator system that considers the entire GLODF process,presents a substantial challenge in assessing GLODF susceptibility in the *** study proposes a process-driven GLODF susceptibility assessment indicator system responding to climate change that considers the complete process of GLODF formation,incorporating relevant parameters about upstream,themselves,and downstream of glacial ***,to mitigate subjective factors associated with traditional evaluation methods,we developed three novel hybrid machine-learning models by integrating classic machine-learning algorithms with the whale optimization algorithm(WOA)to delineate the distribution of GLODF susceptibility in the *** the hybrid models effectively predicted the GLODFs occurrence,with the WOA-SVC model demonstrating the highest prediction *** 34%of the catchments exhibit high and very high susceptibility levels,primarily concentrated along the north and south sides of the Himalayan ridge,particularly in the eastern and central *** capturing the physical formation process of hazards,such as topographic potential(highest relative importance value of 40%),can precisely identify GLODF.A total of 128 catchments pose potential transboundary threats,with 24 classified as having a very high susceptibility level and 25 as having a high susceptibility ***,the border region between China and Nepal is a prominent hotspot for transboundary threats of *** findings can provide valuable clues for disaster prevention,mitigation,and cross-border coordination in the Himalayas.

Characterisation of the granular dynamics at the interface between a pipe and a granular flow in a rotating drum

A new mobile bed heat exchanger is presented in this work which is composed of a flowing granular material in a rotating drum and a cylindrical pipe with potential interest in different energy applications as cooling,heating or heat recovery *** optimal design of the device requires a characterisation of the phenomena involved at the interface between the granular flow and the *** process is modelled by the discrete element method and a global classification of the flow patterns around the pipe is presented with respect to the three main control parameters of the problem:the Froude number,the diameter ratio and the relative filling height of the *** second part is devoted to the characterisation of the structure of the flow at the interface(velocity field,density field)in particular in a so-called Biflow regime where granular motion occurs above as well as below the pipe which is favourable to transfer by convection.A typical behavior at the interface with the pipe consists of a zone I with high velocities of particles at the top of the pipe,a second zone with quasistatic particles or low velocity particles at the front and at the bottom of the pipe and a last zone ll of depletion of particles at the back of the *** Froude number has a limited effect on the features of this structure on the first layer in the range of Froude numbers considered whereas the relative height is a more determinant parameter to control the relative magnitude of velocities in zone I and zone Il as well as the extent of the depletion *** first hydrodynamical characterisation can shed light on the dynamical regimes with improved transfer between the particles and the pipe boundary.

Effects of projectile parameters on the momentum transfer and projectile melting during hypervelocity impact
