Relationship between excessive erythrocytosis and acute mountain sickness: A field study

Background: Alterations in hematology, especially erythroid changes, may be involved in acute mountain sickness(AMS) at high altitude. This study aimed to identify the relationship between excessive erythrocytosis and AMS following different durations of high-altitude ***: A total of 692 healthy young Chinese men were recruited for the study in June and July of 2012 and were divided into the following five groups: I) the 24-h group(24 hours after arrival at Lhasa, 3,700 m, n=261); II) the 7-d group(exposed at Lhasa, 3,700 m for seven days, n=99); III) the re-exposure group(re-exposed at Yang Bajing, 4,400 m for seven days after >1 year of acclimation at 3,700 m, n=94); IV) the acclimated group(>1 year of acclimation at 3,700 m, Lhasa, n=42); and V) the sea-level control(control group, Chengdu, n=196). Case report forms were used to record the subjects’ demographic information and AMS-related symptoms. All of the subjects underwent routine blood ***: The red blood cell(RBC) count fell slightly but was not significant upon acute exposure to high altitude, whereas the hemoglobin concentration([Hb]) increased significantly. After high-altitude re-exposure, both of the [Hb] and RBC count showed significant increases. The incidence of AMS was 65.1%, 26.3% and 51.1%, respectively in the 24-h, 7-d and re-exposure groups. The [Hb](P=0.024) and hematocrit(P=0.017) were greater in the AMS+ individuals than in the AMS– individuals in 7-d group. A correlation analysis revealed that the [Hb] and hematocrit were closely related with AMS score in 7-d and re-exposure groups, while the RBC showed a correlation with AMS score only in the re-exposure group. The AMS incidence was lowest when the [Hb] was between 140 and 160 g/L in the 24-h and 7-d ***: AMS is associated with both [Hb] and excessive erythrocytosis. Additionally, our findings indicate the existence of an optimal [Hb] for preventing AMS.

Adhesion of cavernous hemangioma in the orbit revealed by CT and MRI:analysis of 97 cases

AIM: To assess features of cavernous hemangioma (CH) in the orbit revealed by CT and MRI and summarize prediction of preoperative CT and MRI for the adhesion degree of CH in the orbit. METHODS: A total of 97 patients with pathologically confirmed CH in the orbit were examined with axial and coronal CT scan, and axial, coronal, sagittal, and enhanced fat suppression MRI scan. CT and MRI findings and intraoperative adhesion degrees were retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS: There were 47 patients with slight adhesion, for whom CT and MRI showed round masses with well defined margins in the extraocular muscles; 14 patients with mild adhesion, for whom CT and MRI revealed irregular masses with unclear boundary between CH and the optic nerve in coronal images, and emissary veins in the posterior region of masses in contrast-enhanced images; 36 patients with severe adhesion, for whom CT and MRI exhibited an irregular or ovoid mass filling the orbital apex, or showed distorted and even spiky margins in the posterior region of masses in contrast enhanced images at the presence of a transparent triangle between the mass and the orbital apex. CONCLUSION: Preoperative CT and MRI aid in accurate diagnosis, selection of the surgical approach, and assessment of the adhesion degree and surgical risks for CH.

Refractivity estimation from radar sea clutter

This paper addresses the problem of estimating lower atmospheric refractivity under the nonstandard propagation conditions frequently encountered in low altitude maritime radar applications. The vertical structure of the refractive environment is modeled by using a five-parameter model, and the horizontal structure is modeled as range-independent. The electromagnetic propagation in the troposphere is simulated by using a split-step fast Fourier transform based on parabolic approximation to the wave equation. A global search marked as a modified genetic algorithm （MGA） for the 5 environmental parameters is performed by using a genetic algorithm （GA） integrated with a simulated annealing technique. The retrieved results from simulated runs demonstrate the ability of this method to make atmospheric refractivity estimations. A comparison with the classical GA and the Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo （Bayesian- MCMC） technique shows that the MGA can not only shorten the inverse time but also improve the inverse precision. For real data cases, the inversion values do not match the reference data very well. The inverted profile, however, can be used to synoptically describe the real refractive structure.

Energy-Efficient User Association in Heterogeneous Networks with M2M/H2H Coexistence under QoS Guarantees

In this paper, we propose an energy efficient user association scheme for uplink heterogeneous networks with machine-to-machine(M2M) and human-to-human(H2H) coexistence. A group based random access protocol is designed for massive number of machine-typecommunications(MTC) user equipments'(UEs) transmissions. A user association problem for UEs' energy efficiency maximization is formulated considering the HTC UEs' quality of service(QoS) guarantees and load balance among multiple BSs, simultaneously. A distributed iterative algorithm is developed to solve the optimization problem. In addition, the convergence of the proposed algorithm is proved. Simulation results show that our proposed scheme outperforms other schemes in terms of energy efficiency and QoS guarantees.

Diagnostic Analysis of the Quasi-Balanced Flow of a Mesoscale Vortex During the 12 June 2008 Guangxi Rainstorm

By using the high-resolution observation data and MM5 model simulation data,the analysis on the 12 June 2008 Guangxi flash-flood rainstorm shows that the associated major mesoscale weather system of this event is a quasi-stationary mesoscale vortex,which resulted from the interaction between the midlatitude synoptic-scale waves in the westerly belt and the low-latitude warm-moist flow under the terrain *** genesis,development,and movement of the mesoscale vortex have significant impacts on the intensity and persistence of the severe precipitation from the Guangxi flash-flood *** vortex is characterized by the coexistence of strong vorticity and divergence with the same order of *** organized,deep,and moist convection was observed for a long period of time,and was produced by the interaction between the mesoscale vortex and the gravity *** latter was generated by the terrain effect and the ageostrophic effect of high winds in the low-level *** to the quasi-balanced dynamical theory,quasi-balanced flow must have existed in the mesoscale motions with both divergent and rotational ***,based on the diagnosis of the quasi-balanced flow,the PV-ω inversion method is employed to analyze the organized moist *** results show that 50%-70% of the vertical circulation in the rainstorm areas was quasi-balanced,so the quasi-balanced flow could well reflect features of the strong vertical motions associated with the coexistence of vorticity and divergence during this event.

HORIZONTAL AND VERTICAL DISTRIBUTIONS OF CLOUD COVER OVER EASTERN CHINA AND THE EAST CHINA SEA

Based on data from satellite and surface observations,the horizontal and vertical distributions of clouds over eastern China and the East China Sea are *** maximum centers of cloud cover are clearly visible in the horizontal distribution of total cloud *** of these maxima occur over *** the clouds mainly originate from the climbing airflows in the southern and eastern slopes of the Tibetan plateau,they can be classified as dynamic *** third center of cloud cover is over the *** the clouds mainly form from the evaporation of the warm Kuroshio Current,they can be categorized as thermodynamic *** the movement of the cloud centers reflect the seasonal variation of the Asian summer monsoon,cloud fractions of six cloud types that are distinct from the total cloud cover show individual horizontal patterns and seasonal *** their vertical distribution,cloud cover over the land and sea exhibits different patterns in winter but similar patterns in *** cold seasons,limited by divergent westerlies in the middle troposphere,mid-level clouds prevail over the leeside of the Tibetan *** the same time,suppressed by strong downdraft of the western Pacific subtropical high,low clouds dominate over the *** warm seasons both continental and marine clouds can penetrate upward into the upper troposphere because they are subject to similar unstable stratification conditions.

The safety and efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines in the elderly,a high-risk group for severe COVID-19 infection,have not been fully *** clarify these issues,this prospective study followed up 157 elderly and 73 young participants for 16 months and compared the safety,immunogenicity,and efficacy of two doses of the inactivated vaccine BBIBP-CorV followed by a booster dose of the recombinant protein vaccine *** results showed that this vaccination protocol was safe and tolerable in the *** administering two doses of the BBIBP-CorV,the positivity rates and titers of neutralizing and anti-RBD antibodies in the elderly were significantly lower than those in the young *** the ZF2001 booster dose,the antibody-positive rates in the elderly were comparable to those in the young;however,the antibody titers remained ***,age,and underlying diseases were independently associated with vaccine immunogenicity in elderly *** pseudovirus neutralization assay showed that,compared with those after receiving two doses of BBIBP-CorV priming,some participants obtained immunological protection against BA.5 and BF.7 after receiving the ZF2001 *** infection symptoms last longer in the infected elderly and pre-infection antibody titers were negatively associated with the severity of post-infection *** antibody levels in the elderly increased significantly after breakthrough infection but were still lower than those in the *** data suggest that multiple booster vaccinations at short intervals to maintain high antibody levels may be an effective strategy for protecting the elderly against COVID-19.

This paper diagnoses and analyses the developmental mechanism of a process of extratropical transition of a tropical cyclone which occurred over West Pacific Ocean based on a diagnosis method of potential vorticity inversion of *** study diagnoses quantitatively the role and effect of dynamic influence of westerly cold troughs,middle-latitude baroclinic frontal zones,cyclone cycles and unbalanced wind fields during the different stages of the extratropical transition of a tropical cyclone,and also discusses the interaction between them and the developmental *** results show that there are different developmental mechanisms during each stage of the extratropical transition and the processes are also unbalanced.

THE COUPLED MODE BETWEEN THE KUROSHIO REGION MARINE HEATING ANOMALY AND THE NORTH PACIFIC ATMOSPHERIC CIRCULATION IN WINTERTIME

Using monthly reanalysis data of the National Center for Environmental Research/National Center for Atmospheric Research(NCEP/NCAR) and Objectively Analyzed Air-Sea Heat Flux(OAFlux) gathered during the winter,singular vector decomposition(SVD) analysis was conducted to reveal the coupled mode between the Kuroshio marine heating anomaly and the geopotential height at 500 hPa(Z500) over the North *** first SVD mode showed that when the northern Kuroshio marine heating anomaly was positive,the Z500 in the central and western sections of the North Pacific was anomalously *** composing the meteorological field anomalies in the positive(or negative) years,it has been revealed that while the Aleutian Low deepens(or shallows),the northwesterly wind overlying the Kuroshio strengthens(or weakens) and induces the near-surface air to be cool(or warm).Furthermore,this increases(or decreases) the upward heat flux anomaly and cools(or warms) the sea surface temperature(SST) *** the vicinity of Kuroshio and its downstream region,the vertical structure of the air temperature along the latitude is baroclinic;however,the geopotential height is equivalently barotropic,which presents a cool trough(or warm ridge) spatial *** divergent wind and vertical velocities are introduced to show the anomalous zonal circulation *** are characterized by the rising(or descending) air in the central North Pacific,which flows westward and eastward toward the upper troposphere,descends(or rises) in the Kuroshio and in the western section of North America,and then strengthens(or weakens) the mid-latitude zonal cell(MZC).
