China released a list of the top 10 archaeological findings of 2023 on March 22,2024,with the Qujialing relics site in central China's Hubei province listed as one of *** Qujialing relics site dates back between 5,900 and 4,200 years and is a major Neolithic relics *** in the transition belt between the southern foothills of Dahong Mountain and the Jianghan Plain,with Qujialing at its core,the site occupies an area of approximately 2.84 million square meters,integrating over 10 spots,including Yinjialing,Zhongjialing and Zhongziba.

DEAR EDITOR,The Laosicheng site in Yongshun County,Hunan province,China,plays an important role in elucidating the animal population composition of the region prior to the middle Qing Dynasty(approximately 300 years ago).This site has yielded a substantial number of animal bones,11960 of which have been identified to the species level,serving as direct evidence of ancient animal populations(Hunan Provincial institute of Cultural relics and archaeology,2018).

Characteristics of the short rachillae of rice from archaeological sites dating to 7000 years ago

The abscission layer formed on a pedicel situated at the basal part of a short rachilla is an important characteristic for discriminating between wild, japonica, and indica rice. The short rachillae of paddy rice grains excavated from the Kuahuqiao, Luojiajiao, and Tianluoshan sites, located in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River and dating to 7000 years old, were observed. The results showed that the short rachillae could be divided into two types: a wild type and japonica type. These results indicated that the rice had been domesticated, but was a primitive cultivated rice that retained some of the characteristics of wild rice. The results also suggested that the rice was changing to resemble japonica type rice. Based on the ratios of wild and japonica types, it was inferred that rice domestication began 10000 years ago.

The Zhongba site has been demonstrated to be a location of salt production based on multi-disciplinary research including salt archaeology,environmental archaeology,zooarchaeology,paleobotany,and other natural science *** continuity of salt production from the Han Dynasty to the present day as understood primarily from ancient texts can now be traced back to even earlier times. Based on the characteristics of cultural layer deposits,features,and artifacts,Zhongba can be clearly distinguished from known settlements,and from bronze,iron,pottery and porcelain *** to various natural science examinations,the major impurities in local salt brine are also found in floor features,brine troughs,and rounded bottom pots at the site even though NaCl itself was not *** traces were left over from the salt production process rather than being naturally *** and its constituent features and artifacts share many common characters with other salt production sites around the ***,the Zhongba site can be confidently identified as a salt production site where activity continued for several thousand *** formation of the site cannot be separated from salt production,and it is also highly related to its natural environment.

Particle induced X-ray Emission(PIXE) was used to analyze the proto-porcelain excavated from Tingziqiao kiln site of Warring States(475–221 BC) in Deqing County of Zhejiang province, China. It was found that the porcelain body and glaze differ from each other in recipes. The porcelain clay of high silicon and low aluminum might be used to make the body of proto-porcelain. Lime and plant or wood ashes might be added into the glaze of the proto-porcelain. Cluster analysis was done to reveal the compositional relationship between the proto-porcelain samples.

This study,based on environmental archaeological studies focused on Qin'an County and Li County in gansu province,China,shows that during 8-7.3 ka BP few cultivated crop seeds were *** 6.4 ka BP,during the Banpo period,many crop seeds appeared,indicating the development of *** agriculture in this area appeared and flourished a little later than in the Central Plain of *** change is an important factor that influenced the development of agriculture in this *** rapid expansion of agriculture during late Yangshao and Changshan benefited from the humid and warm climate in the mid-Holocene,especially the emergence of *** 4 ka BP,climate became drier,and agriculture began to *** Siwa Culture is characterized by pastoral economy,until the Eastern Zhou period,agriculture began to recover,when wheat and barley appeared in Li County,indicating diversification of agriculture of this time.

The southward expansion of East Asian farmers profoundly influenced the social evolution of Southeast Asia by introducing cereal ***,the timing and routes of cereal expansion in key regions are unclear due to limited empirical *** we report macrofossil,microfossil,multiple isotopic(C/N/Sr/O)and paleoproteomic data directly from radiocarbon-dated human samples,which were unearthed from a site in Xingyi in central Yunnan and which date between 7000 and 3300 a *** isotopes reveal the earliest arrival of millet ca.4900 a BP,and greater reliance on plant and animal agriculture was indicated between 3800 and 3300 a *** dietary differences between hunter-gatherer and agricultural groups are also evident in the metabolic and immune system proteins analysed from their skeletal *** results of paleoproteomic analysis indicate that humans had divergent biological adaptations,with and without *** combined application of isotopes,archaeobotanical data and proteomics provides a new approach to documenting dietary and health changes across major subsistence transitions.
