Effect of electro-acupuncture on substance P, its receptor and corticotropin-releasing hormone in rats with irritable bowel syndrome

AIM： To investigate the effect and mechanism of electro-acupuncture lEA） at ST25 and ST37 on irritable bowel syndrome （IBS） of rats. METHODS： A total of 21 male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into normal group, model group and EA group. A rat model of IBS was established by constraining the limbs and distending the colorectum of rats. Rats in EA group received bilateral EA at ST25 and ST37 with a sparse and intense waveform at a frequency of 2/50 Hz for 15 min, once a day for 7 d as a course. Rats in normal and model groups were stimulated by distending colorectum （CR）. An abdominal withdrawal reflex （AWR） scoring system was used to evaluate improvements in visceral hypersensitivity. Toluidine blue-improved method, immunohistochemistry and radioimmunoassay were used to observe mucosal mast cells （MC）, changes of substance P （SP） and substance P receptor （SPR） in colon and change of corticotropin-releasing hormone （CRH） in hypothalamus. RESULTS： The threshold of visceral sense was significantly lower in model group than in normal group,and significantly higher in EA group than in model group. The number of mucosal MC was greater in model group than in normal group and significantly smaller in EA group than in model group. The CRH level in hypothalamus of rats was significantly higher in model group than in normal group, which was remarkably decreased after electro-acupuncture treatment. The SP and SPR expression in colon of rats in model group was decreased after electro-acupuncture treatment. CONCLUSION： EA at ST25 and ST37 can decrease the number of mucosal MC and down-regulate the expression of CRH in hypothalamus, and the expression of SP and SPR in colon of rats with IBS.

Hypothesis, Modern Researches and Clinical Applications of Cutaneous Regions in Traditional Chinese Medicine

As one of the most important concepts in traditional Chinese medicine, cutaneous regions have a close relationship with skin in modern medicine. According to the doctrine of traditional Chinese medicine, the cutaneous regions are the corresponding projections of twelve meridians in the superficial layer of the body and play an important role in body surface-viscera correlation. The symptoms of visceral disorders will reflect on cutaneous regions and one of the major patterns of manifestation is referred visceral pain accompanied by tenderness and hyperalgesia on the body surface. On the contrary, cutaneous regions participate in the treatment of visceral disorders. As major clinical applications of the cutaneous regions hypothesis, superficial acupuncture, subcutaneous needling, massage(tuina), moxibustion, and wrist-ankle acupuncture have achieved favorable therapeutic outcomes in clinical practice. Modern researches have gained insights into the biological background of cutaneous regions, however, further studies are needed to clarify the mechanisms.

acupuncture for migraine without aura:a systematic review and metaanalysis

Background： Migraine without aura （MWoA）, the most common type of migraine, has great impacts on quality of life for migraineurs. acupuncture is used in the treatment and prevention of migraine for its analgesic effects. Objective： The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to systematically assess the therapeutic and preventive effect of acupuncture treatment and its safety for MWoA,Search strategy： Nine electronic databases （PubMed, MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, Lilacs, Embase, China National Knowledge Infrastructure （CNKI）, Chongqing VIP （CQV1P）, Wanfang Data and Chinese Clinical Trial Registry （ChiCTR）） were systematically searched from their beginning through June 2017 using MeSH terms such as ＂acupuncture, acupuncture therapy, electro-acupuncture, ear acupuncture, acupuncture points, acupuncture analgesia,＂ and ＂migraine disorders, cluster headache.＂ Manual searching included other conference abstracts and reference lists. Inclusion criteria： Randomized controlled trials （RCTs） with a clinical diagnosis of MWoA, which were treated with acupuncture versus oral medication or sham acupuncture treatment. Data extraction and analysis： Two evaluators screened and collected literature independently; they extracted information on participants, study design, interventions, follow-up, withdrawal and adverse events and assessed risk of bias and quality of the acupuncture intervention. The primary outcomes were frequency of migraine （FM） and number of migraine days （NM）. Secondary outcomes included the visual analogue scale （VAS） score, effective rate （ER） and adverse events. Pooled estimates were calculated as mean difference （MD） with 95% confidence interval （CI） for continuous data and relative risk （RR） with 95% CI for dichotomous data. Results： Overall, 14 RCTs including 1155 participants were identified. The analysis found that acupunc- ture had a significant advantage over medication in reducing FM （MD）=-1.50; 95% CI： -2.32 to -0.68; P〈 0.001） and VAS scor

Herbs-partitioned moxibustion alleviates aberrant intestinal epithelial cell apoptosis by upregulating A20 expression in a mouse model of Crohn's disease

BACKGROUND A20 inhibits intestinal epithelial cell apoptosis in Crohn's disease, and herbspartitioned moxibustion(HPM) has been demonstrated to be an effective treatment for Crohn's disease. However, the mechanism by which HPM reduces intestinal epithelial cell apoptosis in Crohn's disease has not been thoroughly elucidated to *** To elucidate whether HPM exerts its effects by upregulating A20 to affect intestinal epithelial cell apoptosis in a Crohn's disease mouse *** In this study, mice with A20 deletion in intestinal epithelial cells(A20 IEC-KO) were utilized to establish a Crohn's disease mouse model with 2,4,6-trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid(TNBS) administration, as well as wild-type mice. Mice were randomly divided into normal control(NC), model control(MC), mesalazine(MESA), and HPM groups. The morphology of the colonic mucosa was observed by hematoxylin-eosin staining, and serum endotoxin and apoptosis of epithelial cells were evaluated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and terminal dUTP nick-end labeling assay accordingly. The protein expression levels of A20 and tumor necrosis factor receptor 1(TNFR1)-related signaling molecules were evaluated by Western blot, and co-expression of A20 and TNFR1-associated death domain(TRADD) and co-expression of A20 and receptor-interacting protein 1(RIP1) were observed by double immunofluorescence *** The intestinal epithelial barrier was noted to have an improvement in the HPM group of wild-type(WT) mice compared with that in A20 IEC-KO mice. Moxibustion improves experimental colitis in rats with Crohn's disease by regulating bile acid enterohepatic circulation and intestinal farnesoid X receptor

Extracellular signal-regulated kinase, substance P and neurokinin-1 are involved in the analgesic mechanism of herb-partitioned moxibustion

Herb-partitioned moxibustion can effectively mitigate visceral pain, a major symptom in inflammatory bowel disease, but the analgesic lnechanism is still unclear. Moreover, extracellular signal-regulated kinase, substance P, and neurokinin-1 are involved in formation of central hyperalgesia. Thus, we postulated that the analgesic effect of herb-partitioned moxibustion may be associated with these factors. Accordingly, in this study, we established an inflammatory bowel disease visceral pain model in rat by enema with a mixed solution of 5% trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid and 50% ethanol. Bilateral Tianshu （ST25） and Qihai （CV6） points were selected for herb-partitioned moxi- bustion. Our results showed that herb-partitioned moxibustion improved visceral pain and down-regulated extracellular signal-regulated kinase, substance P, and neurokinin-1 protein and mRNA expression in dorsal root ganglia. These results indicate that down-regulation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase, substance E and neurokinin-1 protein and mRNA may be a central mechanism for the analgesic effect of herb-partitioned moxibustion.

71 cases of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis were treated by moxibustion and their immune functionand thyroid function were *** was found that moxibustion was able to reduce thethyroid amibodies in the peripheral blood of the patients with hypothyroidism and to recovertheir thyroid *** was also found that moxibustion could lower the thyroid antibodysecretory levels and ADCC(antibody-dependent cell mediated cytotoxicity)activities ofthe lymphocytes,in addition,the action of moxibustion in reducing the secretion of thyroidantibodies was related to its action of regulating the proportions of T lymphocyte *** results indicate that the treatment of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis by moxihustion is probably accomplished through its effect in regulating the relationship among the T lymphocytesubsets.
