Protopsyllidiidae Carpenter,1931 is an extinct hemipteran family belonging to the suborder Sternorrhyncha.The family includes over 30 genera and 50 species(Grimaldi and Engel,2005),described from various ages(ranging from the Late Permian to the Upper Cretaceous) and different localities.Over the last century,the classification of this family has been highly controversial amongst experts.Mostly studied as wing impressions in rock,little is known on body morphology.The family is mainly defined by vein R separating first from the common stem R+M+CuA instead of vein CuA.This feature,which is shared only with Psylloidae,suggests a close relationship between them,thus placing the family Protopsyllidiidae in a basal position within the order and potentially as a stem group to the suborder Sternorrhynca(Hennig,1981;Kukalova-Peck,1991;Klimaszewski,1995;Grimaldi 2003).Postopsyllidium Grimaldi,2003 is the only genus comprised of entirely preserved adult specimens,which are described from both Burmese and New Jersey ambers.In this study,we checked about 20 specimens of Postopsyllidium likely belonging to different taxa.All the material is from the Burmese amber and housed in the Nanjing institute of Geology and Palaeontology,Chinese Academy of Sciences.While surveying this material,new major characters were recognized and documented:the presence of a second anal A2 in the forewing;R forked into R1 and R2 forming as such a very tiny remnant pterostigma,morphology of the male terminalia.Both these traits were lacking in the original description,and overlooked by Grimaldi(2003) who disposed only a single unoptimally preserved specimen from each described species from Burmese and New Jersey ambers.These new traits allow us to revise and update the generic diagnosis and the descriptions of the species.Moreover,two new species were identified and described from the Burmese amber,essentially based on the shape of the compound eyes in addition to some morphological differences in the male terminalia i.e.:shape of the parameres,shap

土地利用动态变化是全球变化和可持续发展研究的基础,对区域水循环、大气循环、环境质量、气候变化及陆地生态系统生产力等具有重要影响,也是造成生物多样性衰减的最主要原因。目前,建立于复杂性科学基础上的的智能体模型(ABM)成为土地利用动态模拟的重要方法。智能体模型能模拟个体或群体的行为及决策模式,从而能将政府、城市规划、房地产开发商、住户等社会群体及个人对土地利用产生的影响进行模拟,同时能对不同社会经济政策对土地动态影响进行模拟。智能体模型在元胞自动机基础上,加入了人为因素的智能体概念,从而能更好地模拟土地动态。在分析总结了智能体模型的相关概念和组织结构,并分析了其在土地利用动态、城市动态模拟及生态过程模拟等方面的应用与元胞自动机的关系,比较了常用的智能体模型的主要软件,最后概括了智能体模型优点、发展趋势及存在的主要问题。

An Assessment of Youth Involvement in Agricultural Activities in Eastern Cape Province, South Africa

Youth, who make up the majority of South Africa’s population and will be the future responsible citizens, confront numerous obstacles, including a lack of access to land, finance, markets, practical training, and incentives. The low interest of youngsters in agriculture is attributed to the poor status of agricultural output in Africa’s rural areas due to a lack of government support. The study was conducted to assess the involvement of youths in agricultural activities in Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. The convenient sampling technique was used, and qualitative data were collected from 104 participants using a pre-tested structured questionnaire. The questionnaire covered demographic characteristics, land ownership status, contact with extension personnel, and involvement in farming activities, funding, and constraints. Descriptive statistics and chi-square test were used for data analysis. The results showed that there were more males (59.6%) participants than females (40.4%) and the majority (74%) were between 20 - 35 years of age, 52.9% had senior secondary school level of education and came from a household size ranging from 6 - 19. Approximately 88.5% of participants had an agricultural background with an annual income of less than R20,000.00. More than half (51.9 %) of the study population, had farming experience less than 5 years, while 52.9% owned less than 2 hectares of land, and 78.8% were self-employed. Findings revealed that age (χ2 = 5.519, P χ2 = 43.981, P < 0.001) had a significant association with extension contact and farming enterprises respectively. Furthermore, lack of land ownership, high input costs, access to credit, visibility of extension personnel, lack of market access, low returns, high cost of mechanization, and lack of farming knowledge were the most ranked constraints hindering youth involvement in agricultural activities. Background:The American Diabetes Association and World Health Organization have recently adopted the HbA1c measurement as one method of diagnostic criteria for diabetes.The change in diagnostic criteria has important implications for diabetes treatment and prevention.We therefore investigate diabetes using HbA1c and glucose criteria together,and assess the prevalent trend in a developing southern Chinese population with 85 million residents. Methods:A stratified multistage random sampling method was applied and a representative sample of 3590 residents 18 years of age or above was obtained in 2010.Each participant received a full medical check-up,including measurement of fasting plasma glucose,2-how post-load plasma glucose,and HbA1c Information on history of diagnosis and treatment of diabetes was collected.the prevalence of diabetes obtained from the present survey was compared with the data from the survey in 2002. Results:The prevalence of diabetes based on both glucose and HbA1c measurements was 21.7%(95%CI:17.4%-26.1%) in 2010,which suggests that more than 1 in 5 adult residents were suffering from diabetes in this developing population.Only 12.9%(95%CI:8.3%-17.6%) of diabetic residents were aware of their condition.The prevalence of pre-diabetes was 66.3% (95%CI:62,7%-69.8%).The prevalence of diabetes and pre-diabetes which met att the three diagnostic thresholds(fast plasma glucose,1 hour post-load plasma glucose,ami HbA1c) was 3.1%and S.2%,respectively.Diabetes and pre-diabetes as determined by HbA1c measurement had higher vascular risk than those determined by glucose levels.The prevalence of diabetes increased from 2.9%(95%Cl:2.0%-3.7%) in 2002 to 13.8%(95%CI:10.2%-17.3%) in 2010 based on the same glucose criteria. Conclusions:Our results show that the diabetes epidemic is accelerating in China.The awareness of diabetes is extremely low.The glucose test and HbA1c measurement should be used together to increase detection of diabetes and pre-diabetes.

Tropical and sub-tropical streams harbor great biodiversity and are responsible for crucial ecosystem services.Intending to contribute to the understanding of how anthropogenic stressors and pressures alter functional or taxonomic diversity in biotic assemblages or processes in these systems,Water Biology and Security published eight papers.The research originated from Cameroon(Central Africa),southeastern Brazil,eastern Amazonia,and eastern China,representing eight river basins:Huai,Sui and Yishusi from east Asia;São Francisco,Doce,Jequitinhonha,and Amazon from South America;and Congo from Africa.The last two are the most biodiverse on the planet.The studied biomes included tropical rainforest and savanna,neotropical savanna and rainforest,neotropical savanna mountains,and subtropical monsoon forest.The response variables included fish assemblages(3 papers),entire macroinvertebrate assemblages or sub-groups(4 papers),and stream physical habitat structure(1 paper).

Despite long-standing interest,the mechanisms driving aquatic macroinvertebrate drift in tropical streams remain poorly understood.Therefore,the objective of this study was to evaluate which environmental metrics drive macroinvertebrate drift in neotropical sky island streams.We evaluated whether altitude,the abundance of food resources,and variations in water quality influenced macroinvertebrate drift density,diversity,richness,and functional feeding groups.An hypothesis was developed to test whether increased altitude,lower food availability(particulate organic matter),and discharge would increase the density,taxonomic richness,and diversity of drifting invertebrates.Nine headwater stream sites were sampled in the rainy and dry seasons in the Espinhaço Meridional Mountain Range(EMMR)of southeast Brazil.Samples were collected using drift nets deployed from 5:00 p.***.to 8:00 p.m.The abundance of food resources was assessed through estimates of coarse(CPOM)and fine(FPOM)particulate organic matter,and primary producers.CPOM availability was an important explanatory variable for Gathering-Collectors and Scrapers,Altitude was important for Shredders and Predators,and Filtering-Collectors were linked to water discharge,suggesting that functional group drift masses were linked to different ecosystem components.Water temperature,conductivity,dissolved oxygen,current velocity,FPOM biomass and microbasin elevation range exerted little influence on macroinvertebrate drift.Regarding taxa composition,this study also found that Baetidae and Leptohyphidae(Ephemeroptera)and Chironomidae and Simuliidae(Diptera)were the most abundant groups drifting.

Intensive care units’ acquired muscle weakness is present in approximately 50% of the patients. Although active muscle training can attenuate weakness, a large proportion of critical patients cannot participate in any active mobilization. Neuromuscular electrical stimulation may be an alternative strategy to reverse muscle weakness. The objective of the study was to review the scientific publications on the use of neuromuscular electrical stimulation and its parameters and the main results in patients hospitalized in intensive care units. This is an integrative review surveying studies in online databases. The studies were selected from the following descriptors: neuromuscular electrical stimulation AND parameters AND intensive care units AND muscle weakness. The inclusion criteria included articles that addressed the topic of neuromuscular electrical stimulation and the parameters used in patients admitted to intensive care units, aged 18 years or older. Exclusion criteria were studies involving animals, case reports, letters to the editor and book chapters. The search comprised articles in the Portuguese, English and Spanish languages from January 2013 to March 2019. Of the 185 articles identified, nine met the eligibility criteria. The studies were evaluated assessing the level of evidence, and the relevant information was presented in the table and discussed. The parameters of the neuromuscular electrical stimulation employed in the studies showed positive results for the maintenance of strength and muscle mass. There was evidence of benefits in the local and systemic microcirculation, potentially mobilizing endothelial stem cells, to prevent atrophy, to reduce mechanical ventilation time and stay in intensive care unit;and when incorporated into the usual physiotherapy care, proved to be more effective than usual care. Its use is safe and viable in critically ill patients.

Parotid gland adenocarcinoma is commonly a tumor of low malignancy and low incidence worldwide. The reported case shows the rapid progression of this tumor in an elderly patient and infrequent effects, such as a presentation of facial edema not commonly described in the medical literature. Patient was admitted to hospital in November 2019 with secretion and partial hearing loss in the right ear and infiltrative and stone lesion with initial skin ulceration in the right cervical region. After 42 days, he returned and was admitted to the intensive care unit with significant swelling of the face, hardened and hyperemic neck, difficulty in speech and inability to open the eye. He presented changes in the mobility of the speech and hearing organs, reduced laryngeal mobility, vocal changes, speech with altered articulation and severe oropharyngeal dysphagia with risk of bronchoaspiration. The patient was diagnosed in September 2019 with a parotid tumor (salivary gland adenocarcinoma T4). The medical team requested computed tomography, computed tomography angiography of the chest and cervical vessels and computed tomography of the neck, in addition to evaluation by the head and neck surgery service and general surgery. After analyzing the results, the medical team suggested a hypothesis of tumor invasion that could result in obstruction of local lymphatic drainage, something unusual in the evolution of this type of tumor. In addition, it was not possible to adhere to radiotherapy treatment due to the extent of the lesion and there was also no confirmation of metastases. The reported case shows us that parotid gland adenocarcinoma, when diagnosed in an advanced stage, can limit the approach to treatment. It was chosen in agreement with the family to proceed with palliative care without invasive measures. Palliative care may be the best option for cases like this, bringing some comfort to the patient and his family.

Atrial fibrillation is a cardiac arrhythmia of high prevalence in the population, especially in the elderly. Its main electrical characteristics are the interval between two successive irregular R waves, absence of P waves and presence of f waves between QRS complexes. The most common symptoms of atrial fibrillation are irregular palpitations associated with dyspnea, dizziness, feeling tired, fatigue and general malaise, but not all patients have any symptoms. The present report presents the history of an elderly patient who arrived at the hospital’s emergency department with irregular heart rhythm and palpitations. The patient’s symptoms, associated with the electrocardiogram results, indicated paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. Electrical cardioversion was performed, and after, cardiac ablation via the femoral vein at the hospital’s cardiology service. There were no complications during the procedure. As a routine imaging exam after ablation, control esophagogastroduodenoscopy was requested to verify that there was no formation of atrio-esophageal fistula developed by the invasive ablation procedure and electrocardiogram, which showed normal sinus rhythm. The patient remained in the cardiac intensive care unit for observation for 24 hours. After the electrical cardioversion and catheter ablation procedures, the patient improved his clinical picture of atrial fibrillation and was discharged after 24 hours of hospitalization. He received treatment to perform at home, to reduce acid reflux into the esophagus and to prevent thrombosis. He did not present pulmonary thromboembolism after hospital discharge. It is believed, therefore, that this form of treatment and management of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation is effective for the solution of the proposed problem and can also serve as a reference for other professionals within the cardiology service.
