Metal-organic framework(MOF)-derived catalysts for Fischer-Tropsch synthesis: recent progress and future perspectives

Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis(FTS) is an important catalytic chemical reaction that converts a mixture of CO and H2(syngas) derived from biomass, coal or natural gas into ultra-clean fuels or value-added chemicals. However, most traditional catalysts used in the Fischer-Tropsch process are faced with the problems of high deactivation rate triggered by sintering, phase changes and oxidation which hamper their catalytic performance. Metal-organic frameworks(MOFs)-derived materials have been a promising alternative in addressing the catalyst deactivation problems in FTS because of the encapsulation of their metal nanoparticles in carbon matrix and absence of large particle size, among other reasons. Therefore, this review emphasizes the most recent research headway in the investigation of MOFs as precursors to achieve high-performance FTS catalysts. Precisely, the design of iron and cobalt-based FTS catalysts from parent MOFs via MOF-mediated synthesis, the catalytic activity of the MOF-derived materials and the promoter effects under FTS operation were outlined and discussed. We have also evaluated the influence of MOF structures on the FTS performance and compared them with traditional/commercially available catalysts to show the importance of this approach. Finally, the challenges and opportunities to further expedite the extensive research efforts and promote their applications in material design and FT technology were mentioned.

Fabrication strategies of porous precious-metal-free bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting:recent advances

Electrocatalytic water splitting using power generated from renewable energy to produce hydrogen has been considered as one of the more attractive approach to alleviate the problems of energy crisis and environmental *** of the biggest challenges for the large-scale application of water electrolysis is the searching of the low cost electrocatalysts with high and stable activity toward both hydrogen evolution reaction(HEr)and oxygen evolution reaction(OEr).The well-developed porous features of materials synthesized from the earth abundant elements endow them with the enhanced mass transfer and improved electronic interconnection during electrochemical reactions,resulting in the excellent electrocatalytic performance for both OEr and ***,this review focuses on the recent development of innovation strategies for the fabrication of porous non-noble-metal materials including heteroatom-doped carbon-based and transition metal(mainly Co,Ni,and Fe)-based materials as efficient electrocatalysts for overall water ***,a detailed discussion of the structure–activity correlation gives an insight on the origin of the high electrocatalytic performance of porous materials obtained from different strategies,and provides guidance for future design and preparation of highly efficient electocatalysts based on non-precious carbon or metal materials for overall water splitting.

PVP-assisted preparation of nitrogen doped mesoporous carbon materials for supercapacitors

The rich porous structure,high surface area and surface doping make nitrogen doping mesoporous carbon materials(N-MPC)attractive in various areas,including adsorption separation,electrochemical energy storage,catalysis and other ***,polyvinylpyrrolidone(PVP)is introduced into the polymerization process of assembly of phenol/formaldehyde(PF)resin by means of hydrogen bonds and electrostatic interaction,which not only leads to the formation of uniform mesopores,but also leads to the increase of specific surface area and nitrogen *** amount of PVP and annealing temperature has no obvious effect on morphology,but subsequently has effect on the specific surface area and pore *** appropriate PVP dosage and annealing temperature are adopted,the obtained N-MPC shows abundant mesoporous,high surface area and suitable nitrogen *** electrode materials in supercapacitor,the N-MPC shows good performance with high capacitance good stability and rate performance,presenting its excellent promising in energy storage.

Cooperative effect between copper species and oxygen vacancy in Ce_(0.7−x)Zr_(x)Cu_(0.3)O_(2) catalysts for carbon monoxide oxidation

The effects of Zr doping on the existence of Cu and the catalytic performance of Ce_(0.7−x)Zr_(x)Cu_(0.3)O_(2)for CO oxidation were *** characterization results showed that all samples have a cubic structure,and a small amount of Zr doping facilitates Cu^(2+) ions entering the CeO2 lattice,but excessive Zr doping leads to the formation of surface CuO crystals ***,the number of oxygen vacancies caused by the Cu^(2+) entering the lattice(e.g.,Cu^(2+)-□-Ce^(4+);□:oxygen vacancy),and the amount of reducible copper species caused by CuO crystals,varies with the Zr *** CO oxidation tests indicated that the oxygen vacancy and the reducible copper species were the adsorption and activation sites of O_(2)and CO,respectively,and the cooperative effects between them accounted for the high CO oxidation ***,the samples x=0.1 and 0.3,which possessed the most oxygen vacancy or reducible copper species,showed the best activity for CO oxidation,with full CO conversion obtained at 110℃.The catalyst is also stable and has good resistance to water during the reaction.

Targeting efficient biomass gasification

The sustainability of biomass use as a primary energy source depends on the efficiency of its conversion *** key contributing factors are well understood,owing to extensive experimental and theoretical modeling efforts in *** this manuscript,we present a systematic study of the thermochemical conversion route that allows us to target desirable outcomes when converting biomass to other fuels and *** process synthesis techniques that include material,energy and work balances,we identify the best targets to consider for highly efficient processes given specific *** analysis shows that by supplying the right amount of oxygen,a 100%carbon conversion efficiency can be achieved for certain applications that require gas as *** the objective is to obtain a cleaner fuel from biomass,converting it to char is most efficient in terms of carbon and energy *** to our analysis,an energy neutral biomass gasification process is theoretically possible over a wide range of H_(2) and CO production *** demonstrate its feasibility by simulating the process on Aspen Plus®.The simulation reveals that with heat integration,we can achieve the energy neutral target at a hydrogen production rate of 0.9 mol/mol *** further show that even at zero energy requirement,biomass gasification processes can have excess chemical potential,which can be recovered as useful work or conserved by producing more *** low temperature heat in the form of steam at 102℃ gives an 8% gain in chemical potential conservation and increases the hydrogen production rate by 60%.The insights revealed in this work allow for better decision making in early stages of process design,and consequently,more efficient biomass gasification processes.

Evolving perspectives on biofuels in the United States

Biofuels represent an important source of renewable energy and may play a crucial role in developing sustainable energy strategies for many countries and the world as a whole. The pros and cons of biofuels, however, have been debated both scientifically and politically. They remain a topic of controversy. In this paper, the evolvement of the perspectives and policies on biofuels in the United States in the past several decades was reviewed. four different periods, that is, the period prior to 1978 （marked by the passage of the energy Act in 1978）; 1978-1989 （ending with the passage of the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990）; 1990-2004 （ending with the passage of the energy act of 2005）; and 2005 to the present, which were characterized by defining events of major policy importance were identified. Each time period was assessed using the Ostrom institutional analysis and development （IAD） framework to show the impact of the evolving interests and influences of global players on policy choices related to biofuels in the United States. The US has a long history of supporting corn-based ethanol and more recently advanced biofuels. Changes in perspectives on biofuels from largely unrelated groups led to changes in policy and market dynamics. Until the late 1990s, most perspectives and policies tended to be aligned and significantly supportive of corn-based ethanol in the United States. In the early 2000s, it became clear that the complications associated with first generation biofuels and corn-based ethanol in particular, were too numerous and too severe to overlook. The need for better options has spurred interest in new technologies and more environmentally benign feedstocks, but, there is little prospect forbiofuels playing a significant role in the near term without greater alignment among key players.

revenue Sharing in Dairy Industry Supply Chain-A Case Study of Hohhot,China

Dairy industry has become an increasingly important enterprise in China as people＇s dietary preferences and composition have changed dramatically with rapid economic development in the past several decades.A number of problems,however,exist in China＇s relatively young dairy industry,including the imbalanced allocation of profits throughout the dairy supply *** of the root causes of the melamine infant powered milk scandal in 2008 was the unfair profit allocation mechanism in dairy supply *** revenue sharing contract approach has proven to be effective in generating market shares and total *** this study,we apply the three-stage revenue sharing contract model of Giannoccaro and Pontrandolfo（2004） in an analysis of dairy supply chain to explore its problems in profit allocation and possible solutions to *** analysis was conducted by a case study of Hohhot,often called as ＂milk capital of China＂.Our results show that the current profit distribution in the dairy supply chain is not balanced：the supermarket＇s profitfarmer＇s profitmanufacturer＇s *** the revenue sharing contract setting,the dairy industry＇s total profit increased by 12.49%.By exploring different parameters in the revenue sharing contract model,we have found that a win-win situation can be created among all the members of the supply *** dairy supply chain,the ratio of the revenue reserved for the supermarket itself is equal or greater than 47% and the ratio of the revenue reserved for the manufacturer itself is between 46.4 and 50.2%.The values of the parameters that generate a sustainable or win-win situation are related to the bargaining position in the dairy supply *** revenue sharing contract has proven to be effective and desirable by all the dairy chain partners in dairy supply *** results of this study provide relevant information for improving the dairy supply chain structure and the revenue sharing contract model can be applied to other industries,s

The Pioneering Works of Professor Duzheng YE on Atmospheric Dispersion,Tibetan Plateau Meteorology,and Air–Sea Interaction

This paper provides an overview of the impacts of the original works of Professor Duzheng YE on a selected set of observational and model studies with which the present author has been associated over the past several decades. The main themes of these works include atmospheric energy dispersion, air–land interactions over the Tibetan Plateau, and El Ni n？orelated air–sea coupling over East *** dispersive behavior of observed atmospheric fluctuations accompanying cold surge events in East Asia is demonstrated. Cold air outbreaks over Korea and southern China are coincident with the successive downstream development of troughs and ridges, with the group velocity of such wave packets being notably faster than the phase propagation speed of individual troughs and ridges. In a more general context, dispersive features are also discernible from lagged teleconnection charts and cross-spectra of observed and model-simulated geopotential height variations on 10–30-day time *** the output from a high-resolution general circulation model, the relative contributions of condensational, sensible, and radiative heating to the atmospheric energy budget over the Tibetan Plateau are documented. The rapid changes of the upper tropospheric Tibetan anticyclone and East Asian mei-yu（＂plum rain＂） precipitation band associated with the development of the Asian monsoon system are *** principal anomalies in sea level pressure, surface wind, precipitation and sea surface temperature over southeastern China and the Philippine Sea region during El Nio events are presented. The contributions of remote El Nio-related forcing and local air–sea interaction to the occurrence of these anomalies are assessed.

Advances in photocatalytic disinfection of bacteria:development of photocatalysts and mechanisms

Photocatalysis has attracted worldwide attention due to its potential in solar energy *** a ＂green＂ advanced oxidation technology, it has been extensively used for water disinfection and wastewater treatment. This article provides a review of the recent progress in solar energy-induced photocatalytic disinfection of bacteria, focusing on the development of highly efficient photocatalysts and their underlying mechanisms in bacterial inactivation. The photocatalysts are classified into Ti O2-based and non-Ti O2-based systems, as Ti O2 is the most investigated photocatalyst. The synthesis methods, modification strategies, bacterial disinfection activities and mechanisms of different types of photocatalysts are reviewed in *** is given to the modified Ti O2, including noble metal deposition, non-metal doping,dye sensitization and composite Ti O2, along with typical non-Ti O2-based photocatalysts for bacterial disinfection, including metal oxides, sulfides, bismuth metallates, graphene-based photocatalysts, carbon nitride-based photocatalysts and natural photocatalysts. A simple and versatile methodology by using a partition system combined with scavenging study is introduced to study the photocatalytic disinfection mechanisms in different photocatalytic systems. This review summarizes the current state of the work on photocatalytic disinfection of bacteria, and is expected to offer useful insights for the future development in the field.
