Soil degradation through salinization and pollution by toxic compounds such as petroleum hydrocarbons(PHCs) in the coastal wetlands has become a significant threat to ecosystem health, biodiversity, and food security. However, traditional remediation technologies can generate secondary pollutants, incur high operating costs, and consume significant quantities of energy. Bioremediation, using plants, biochar, and microbes, is an innovative and cost-effective option to remediate contaminated soils. Biochar, as a plant/microbe growth enhancer, is a promising green approach for the sustainable phytoremediation of PHCs in salinized soils. This review therefore summarizes the effect of plant-and microbe-assisted biochar amendment technology for the remediation of PHCs and salinization. Plant-microbe interactions mediated rhizodegradation despite increasing hydrocarbon sorption. Overall, microbial respiration is more active in biochar amendments, due to faster biodegradation of PHCs and improved soil properties. The use of biochar, plants, and microbes is recommended,as it offers a practical and sustainable option, both ecologically and economically, for the remediation of PHCs and excess salinity. Further development of new green technologies is to be encouraged.

Plant Diversity Performance After Natural Restoration in Reclaimed Deyeuxia angustifolia Wetland

Deyeuxia angustifolia wetlands were widely distributed in the Sanjiang Plain in Northeast China. Due to strong demand for food production, large-area wetlands were reclaimed to farmlands, which threatened regional ecological security greatly. Since the 21 th century, returning farmlands to wetlands was widely adopted for natural restoration in the Sangjiang Plain. As the first reflection of wetland restoration, vegetation succession of restored D. angustifolia wetlands should be fully assessed. In this study, vegetation investigation was carried out in three restored D. angustifolia wetlands with 5, 8 and 12 yr restoration, respectively. Meanwhile, a natural D. angustifolia wetland was selected as reference wetland. Results showed that community composition changed greatly and there was visible community succession. Community dominant species changed from composite to gramineae as restoration time increasing.At first, weeds community appeared in the restored wetlands, especially the xerophytes developed to the pioneer species rapidly. And then, mesophytes and wetland species became the dominant species in the restored wetlands. Finally, wetland species, especially D. angustifolia, occupied the dominant position of restored community. Shannon-wiener index(H) and Simpson index(D) both decreased to close to natural D. angustifolia wetlands. Compared with natural D. angustifolia wetland, species composition and diversity in restored wetlands were more complex and higher. As restoration time increasing, there were not significant differences between community characteristics of restored wetlands and natural wetland. All these suggested that vegetation in reclaimed D. angustifolia wetland could be restored naturally, but its restored period is 10 yr at least. From another angle, it is important to protect current natural wetlands.

coastal lagoons provide many important services to human society,but their year-round use for aquaculture introduces large amounts of sewage.The contamination of antibiotic resistance genes(ARGs)is therefore of great concern.In this study,50 ARGs subtypes,two integrase genes(intl1,intl2),and 16S rRNA genes were detected by high-throughput quantitative PCR,and standard curves of all target genes were prepared for quantification.The occurrence and distribution of ARGs in a typical coastal lagoon(XinCun lagoon,China)were comprehensively explored.We detected 44 and 38 subtypes of ARGs in the water and sediment,respectively,and discuss the various factors influencing the fate of ARGs in the coastal lagoon.Macrolides-lincosamides-streptogramins B was the primary ARG type,and macB was the predominant subtype.Antibiotic efflux and antibiotic inactivation were the main ARG resistance mechanisms.The XinCun lagoon was divided into eight functional zones.The ARGs showed a distinct spatial distribution owing to the influence of microbial biomass and anthropogenic activity in different functional zones.Fishing rafts,abandoned fish ponds,the town sewage zone,and mangrove wetlands provided a large quantity of ARGs to the XinCun lagoon.Nutrients and heavy metals also significantly correlated with the fate of the ARGs,especially NO_(2)^(−)-N and Cu,which cannot be ignored.It is noteworthy that lagoon-barrier systems coupled with persistent pollutant inputs result in coastal lagoons acting as a“buffer pool”for ARGs,which can then accumulate and threaten the offshore environment.

The production and application of organophosphate esters(OPEs)have dramatically increased in recent years due to their use as a replacement for brominated flame retardants.In this study,13 OPEs(∑_(13)OPEs)were analyzed in indoor air samples from kitchens and living rooms in 14 residential homes in Beijing,China.The concentrations of ∑_(13)OPEs in kitchen air samples(mean:13 ng/m^(3))were significantly(p<0.05)higher than in living room air samples(5.0 ng/m^(3)).In addition,paired window surface organic film samples were collected and analyzed to investigate film-air partitioning,exhibiting a mean concentration of ∑_(13)OPEs of 4100 ng/m^(2).The congener profiles showed that tris(2-chloroisopropyl)phosphate(TCPP)was the predominant compound in both window film samples(48%)and the corresponding indoor air sample(56%).The estimated daily intakes(EDI)of OPEs via indoor air inhalation were 2.8 and 1.4 ng/kg/day for infants and adults,respectively,both of which are below the reference dose values(RfDs).Overall,these findings indicate that OPEs in the indoor air environment of residential homes in Beijing are not likely to pose a health risk to the general population.

Limnologists have greatly advanced the understanding of indicators of phosphorus(P)-eutrophy in surface waters. Biotic variables such as macro-invertebrates, fish, zooplankton, benthic algae, and diatoms are extensively used for bio-assessment of eutrophy. New concepts highlight the importance of bed-sediment based “response” variables predicting functional shifts during eutrophication. A cross analysis of studies reveals that alkaline phosphatase(ALP), which serves as a proxy of P-deficiency, and also as an indicator of benthic anoxia/hypoxia-driven feedbacks, can be an easy to measure, cost-effective and reliable tool to assess changes in nutrient stoichiometry, trophic status, and ecological functioning at the sediment-water interface. Here, the issues discussed in this paper are highly relevant to explore new domains of research and “response” based ecosystem models for potential eutrophication management decisions. Because ALP is used in molecular cloning and fingerprinting studies, it is suggested that approaches based on the “omics” technologies need to be used to explore more intricate connections to empirically address ALP-P-eutrophy linkages to track eutrophication in freshwater ecosystems.

Manganese(Mn)is one of the essential microelements in all organisms.However,high level of Mn is deleterious to plants.In this study,the effects of exogenous manganese application on mineral element,polyamine(PA)and antioxidant accumulation,as well as polyamine metabolic and antioxidant enzyme activities,were investigated in Malus robusta Rehd.,a widely grown apple rootstock.High level of Mn treatments decreased endogenous Mg,Na,K and Ca contents,but increased Zn content,in a Mn-concentration-dependent manner.Polyamine metabolic assays revealed that,except the content of perchloric acid insoluble bound(PIS-bound)spermine,which increased significantly,the contents of putrescine(Put),spermidine(Spd)and spermine(Spm)all decreased progressively,accompanied with the decreased activities of arginine decarboxylase(ADC,EC 4.***.1.19)and ornithine decarboxylase(ODC,EC 4.***.1.17),and the increased activities of diamine oxidase(DAO,EC 1.***.3.6)and polyamine oxidase(PAO,EC 1.***.3.3).Further antioxidant capacity analyses demonstrated that contents of anthocyanin,non-protein thiols(NPT)and soluble sugar,and the activities of guaiacol peroxidase(POD,EC 1.***.1.7),catalase(CAT,EC 1.***.1.6)and superoxide dismutase(SOD,EC 1.***.1.1),also increased upon different concentrations of Mn treatments.Our results suggest that endogenous ion homeostasis is affected by high level of Mn application,and polyamine and antioxidant metabolism is involved in the responses of M.robusta Rehd.plants to high level of Mn stress.

The finfish and shellfish resources were assessed quantitatively and qualitatively in regard to their abundance in creek waters at three sites within a period of two years, from January 1999 to December 2000, in the western mangrove areas of Kachchh. The catch rate varied from 0.69 to 6.99 kg h-1. It was low during monsoon (July to October), which could be due to the freshwater-flow-induced salinity reduction in all the sites. Among 38 species recorded, 5 were shellfish and 33 were finfish. The spawning period of fishes was found to be during summer and early monsoon period (May to August). Surface water temperatures varied from 17 ℃ to 37 ℃. Salinity values varied from 34 to 44 and the pH ranged between 7 and 8.9. Variation in dissolved oxygen content was from 3.42 to 5.85 mL L-1. The high fishery densities in these semi arid mangrove creek areas were recorded during monsoon and early winter season.

Evaluation of thermostable endoglucanase in Paenibacillus lautus strain BHU3 for yield enhancement

In the present study,Paenibacillus lautus strain BHU3 isolated from landfill soil was evaluated for the presence of potential endoglucanases which are the first candidate of cellulase enzyme system to act on cellulose.In-silico analysis revealed high potential thermostable endoglucanases which can efficiently interact with cellulose.The most potent and thermostable endoglucanase(locus tag id.CPZ30_18280)belonged to glycosyl family-5 and had interaction energy of−12.981 kcal/mol for the best docked cluster containing three out of ten docking conformations,and Tm value of 73.3℃.MD simulation of 100 ns proved highly stable binding interactions of CPZ30_18280 endoglucanase with cellulose with root mean square deviation(RMSD)values ranging from 0.15 to 0.30 nm.Consistent interactions with characteristic active site residues(tyrosine,tryptophan and aspartate)of glycosyl family-5 endoglucanases were found.Further,to enhance the production of endoglucanases,the fermentation conditions were optimized employing approaches like one factor at a time(OFAT)and response surface methodology(RSM).Maximum activity of endoglucanase was determined at 60℃.The optimized condi-tions for enhanced production of endoglucanase(10.15 U/mL)were pH 6.63,yeast extract conc.3.44 g/L,wheat bran 3.59%,and inoculum size 2.65%.Hence,P.lautus strain BHU3 has enormous potential to synthesize highly efficient thermostable endoglucanases under optimized regime using agro-wastes.Thus,it could find immense industrial applications including large scale cellulose conversion to bioethanol.

Comparative transcriptomic insights into the mechanisms of electron transfer in Geobacter co-cultures with activated carbon and magnetite

Both activated carbon and magnetite have been reported to promote the syntrophic growth of Geobacter metallireducens and Geobacter sulfurreducens co-cultures, the first model to show direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET); however, differential transcriptomics of the promotion on co-cultures with these two conductive materials are unknown. Here, the comparative transcriptomic analysis of G. metallireducens and G. sulfurreducens co-cultures with granular activated carbon (GAC) and magnetite was reported. More than 2.6-fold reduced transcript abundances were determined for the uptake hydrogenase genes of G. sulfurreducens as well as other hydrogenases in those co-cultures to which conductive materials had been added. This is consistent with electron transfer in G. metallireducens-G. sulfurreducens co-cultures as evinced by direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET). Transcript abundance for the structural component of electrically conductive pili (e-pili), PilA, was 2.2-fold higher in G. metallireducens, and, in contrast, was 14.9-fold lower in G. sulfurreducens in co-cultures with GAC than in Geobacters co-cultures without GAC. However, it was 9.3-fold higher in G. sulfurreducens in co-cultures with magnetite than in Geobacters co-cultures. Mutation results showed that GAC can be substituted for the e-pili of both strains but magnetite can only compensate for that of G. sulfurreducens, indicating that the e-pili is a more important electron acceptor for the electron donor strain of G. metallireducens than for G. sulfurreducens. Transcript abundance for G. metallireducens c-type cytochrome gene GMET_RS14535, a homologue to c-type cytochrome gene omcE of G. sulfurreducens was 9.8-fold lower in co-cultures with GAC addition, while that for OmcS of G. sulfurreducens was 25.1-fold higher in co-cultures with magnetite, than in that without magnetite. As autonomous underwater vehicles(AUVs)merely adopt the inductive obstacle avoidance mechanism to avoid collisions with underwater obstacles,path planners for underwater robots should consider the poor search efficiency and inadequate collision-avoidance ability.To overcome these problems,a specific two-player path planner based on an improved algorithm is designed.First,by combing the artificial attractive field(AAF)of artificial potential field(APF)approach with the random rapidly exploring tree(RRT)algorithm,an improved AAF-RRT algorithm with a changing attractive force proportional to the Euler distance between the point to be extended and the goal point is proposed.Second,a twolayer path planner is designed with path smoothing,which combines global planning and local planning.Finally,as verified by the simulations,the improved AAF-RRT algorithm has the strongest searching ability and the ability to cross the narrow passage among the studied three algorithms,which are the basic RRT algorithm,the common AAF-RRT algorithm,and the improved AAF-RRT algorithm.Moreover,the two-layer path planner can plan a global and optimal path for AUVs if a sudden obstacle is added to the simulation environment.
