Cerebrospinal fluid phosphorylated tau,visinin-like protein-1,and chitinase-3-like protein 1 in mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer’s disease

Background:Visinin-like protein-1(VILIP-1)and chitinase-3-like protein 1(CHI3L1 or YKL-40)in cerebrospinal fluid(CSF)are newly discovered markers indicating neuronal damage and microglial activation,respectively.Phosphorylated tau(p-tau)reflects the neuropathology of Alzheimer’s disease(AD)and is useful as diagnostic markers for AD.However,it is unknown whether these biomarkers have similar or complementary information in AD.Methods:We stratified 121 participants from the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative(ADNI)database into cognitively normal(CN),stable mild cognitive impairment(sMCI),progressive MCI(pMCI),and dementia due to AD.Analysis of covariance(ANOVA)and chi-square analyses,Spearman correlation,and logistic regression models were performed to test the demographic,associations between biomarkers,and diagnostic accuracies,respectively.Linear mixed-effects models were used to evaluate the effects of CSF amyloid-β(Aβ)on above biomarkers within diagnostic groups,the combination of diagnostic group and Aβstatus as predictor,and CSF biomarkers as predictors of AD features,including cognition measured by Mini–Mental State Examination(MMSE)and brain structure and white matter hyperintensity(WMH)measured by magnetic resonance imaging(MRI).Results:P-tau,VILIP-1,and YKL-40 were all predictors of AD diagnosis,but combinations of biomarkers did not improve the diagnostic accuracy(AUC 0.924 for p-tau,VILIP-1,and YKL-40)compared to p-tau(AUC 0.922).P-tau and VILIP-1 were highly correlated(r=0.639,p<0.001)and strongly associated with Aβpathology across clinical stages of AD,while YKL-40 was correlated with Aβpathology in CN and AD groups.VILIP-1 was associated with acceleration of cognitive decline,hippocampal atrophy,and expansion of ventricles in longitudinal analyses.YKL-40 was associated with hippocampal atrophy at baseline and follow-up,while p-tau was only associated with worsening WMH at baseline.Conclusions:CSF levels of p-tau,VILIP-1,and YKL-40 may have utility for discriminating between cognitively norm

Synthesis of Meta Symmetric 1T'-WTe2 Using an Edge-Induced Mechanism

Lattice symmetry is vital to the properties of two-dimensional(2D)materials,yet their fixed symmetry cannot meet the increasing requirements in highly eficient and programmable electrical transport.If the structural diversity of 2D materals,as demon-strated by 1T'-WTez,is improved without any phase transition or structural reconstruction,excellent metallic 1T'-WTez would be possibly used for inte-grated devices.Here,we realized meta symmetry of 1T'-WTez by using an edge-induced mechanism,which is recognized as the combination of the intrin-sic C2v symmetry and sixfold axes.On account of the dynamically controlled growth,the meta symmetric 1T'-WTez with^94.9%purity is obtained for the first time.Meta symmetry will also keep the intrinsic electrical properties of 1T'-WTez over the node.Such meta symmetry could not only enrich the structural diversity of 1T'-WTez,but also be extended to other low-symmetry 2D materials,which would be promising for customized circuits and devices.

The　Capability　of　Atmospheric　Profile　Retrieval　from　Satellite　High　Resolution　Infrared　Sounder　Radiances

A non-linear Newtonian iteration retrieval method has been successfully applied to TIROS-N Operational Vertical Sounder(TOVS) data process and simulated Atmospheric infrared Sounder(AIRS) data inversion.Usually,the Newtonian iteration procedure starts with a first guess or initial state of atmospheric temperature and water vapor Profiles,in this paper,a climate mean profile and a regression retrieval from radiances were used as the first guess in AIRS data inversion,the Root Mean Square Error(RMSE) of both t6mperature alld water vapor mixing ratio retrievals shows that high vertical resolution and accurate atmospheric t6mperature and water vapor profiles are achieved using either a poor(a climate mean profile) or good(a regression retrieval) first guess.This illustrates the capability of high resolution iR sounder radiances in atmospheric temperature and moistllre profiles retrieval,which is important when there is no prior information or sample data set of atmospheric temperature and moistllre available.

Chinese deserts and sand fields in Last Glacial Maximum and Holocene Optimum

The Last Glacial Maximum (LGM, c. 26-16 ka) and the Holocene Optimum (HO, c. 9-5 ka) were characterized by cold-dry and warm-wet climates respectively in the recently geological Earth. How Chinese deserts and sand fields responded to these distinctive climatic changes is still not clear, however. To reconstruct environments of the deserts and sand fields during the LGM and HO is helpful to understand the forcing mechanisms of environment change in this arid region, and to test paleoclimatic modeling results. Through our long-term field and laboratory investigations, 400 optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) ages and more than 100 depositional records in the Chinese deserts and sand fields were obtained; on the basis of these data, we reconstruct spatial distributions of the deserts and sand fields during the LGM and HO. Our results show that the sand fields of Mu Us, Hunshandake, Horqin and Hulun Buir in northern and northeastern China had expanded 25%, 37%, 38% and 270%, respectively, during the LGM; the sand fields of Gonghe in the northeastern Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau had expanded 20%, and the deserts of Badain Jaran, Tengger in central northern China had expanded 39% and 29% separately during the LGM; the deserts of Taklimakan, Gurbantünggüt and Kumtag in northwestern China had expanded 10%-20% respectively, compared to their modern areas. On the other hand, all of the sand fields were nearly completely covered by vegetation during the HO; the deserts in northwestern and central northern China were reduced by around 5%-20% in area during this time. Lakes in this arid region were probably expanded during the HO but this conclusion needs more investigation. Compared with the geological distributions of deserts and sand fields, human activity has clearly changed (expanded) the area of active sand dunes at the present time. Our observations show that environmental conditions of Chinese deserts and sand fields are controlled by regional climate together with human activity.

This paper traces evidence from neurobehavioural researchshowing how language functions occur in the brain and supportthe efficacy of drama as a methodology in all language learning.According to Pribram’s holographic view of the brain, move-ment is integral to the transference of vocabulary from the poste-rior convexity to the frontal cortex where words are transformedinto meaning via pragmatic processing mechanisms and then pro-duced as language in the midbrain motor structure which is alsothe center of emotion. Drama is movement with emotion. Words which become amplified with meaning during the dramat-ic process traverse neuronal pathways from the lexicographic,posterior brain to the right forebrain and converge in vocal ex-pression in the centrencephalic mechanism. Without such move-ment, meaning and output do not occur. Words impregnatedwith meaning in the emotional movement of the dramatic processparallel drama-language movements within the brain so thatlearning becomes deeply embedded, retained and easily recalled.Tested drama methods which reinforce or imprint such intra-brain language functions are briefly reviewed as is selected drama-language research supporting the drama-brain-language concep-tual framework of holistic language learning theory. It is arguedthat learning a second language as well as a first languagethrough drama, the language art form which imbues the narra-tive and language structures of any culture, constitutes qualityeducation.

Thermal and photoperiodic requirements of the seedling stage of three tropical forest species

Air temperature and photoperiod play an important role in the seedling development for tropical forest species.Both variables are sensitive to climate,and so evaluating thermal and photoperiodic effects on seedling development is fundamental,especially for climate change studies.Methods to quantify thermal time and the energy required for plants to reach a development stage include air temperature and cardinal temperatures.The photoperiod will also affect physiological reactions of a plant and thus its development.Here we evaluated the six thermal time methods widely used to compute thermal requirement,and identified the influence of the photoperiod from the 2015 and2016 growing seasons and 12 sowing dates in Itajubá,Minas Gerais state,Brazil,on seedling development of three native tropical forest species Psidium guajava L.(Myrtaceae),Citharexylum myrianthum Cham.(Verbenaceae),and Bixa orellana L.(Bixaceae).The method used to quantify thermal time influenced the analytical results of seedling development;the one that considered three cardinal temperatures and compared them with the mean air temperature(Method5)performed better in computing thermal requirements.The influence of photoperiod on seedling development was inconclusive for the three species,but all three developed better in mild temperatures(between 13.3℃and 26.9℃)with a photoperiod shorter than 13 h.
